Jake and Phil are joined live at Fairfield University by the great critic and essayist George Scialabba to discuss Last Men and Women At a time of war, impending ecological disaster, and partisan rage, our commitments to the modern, liberal order are being questioned like never before. Do we understand ourselves best as individuals or as members of a community? Must we renew our absolute commitment to political freedoms, or accept greater state control to deal with the dangers and allures of new technologies? Should the future be post-liberal, neo-liberal, or some other, perhaps more frightening and electrifying possibility? For the past forty-four years the critic George Scialabba has been engaging in arguments with both the critics and proponents of modernity, staking out a commitment to liberty and mass democracy even in light of powerful challenges. On December 4th at 4:30pm George Scialabba will join Phil Klay and Jacob Siegel for a live recording of Manifesto! A Podcast. The three will discuss the price we pay for modern liberalism, and George's commitment to it nonetheless (the essay “Last Men and Women,” originally for Commonweal Magazine and included in his latest book, Only A Voice, published by Verso Books, outlines the basics of his argument) https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/last-men-and-women George Scialabba is the quintessential critic's critic, an outrageously learned and subtle thinker whose stylish, witty and elegantly argued reviews have served as guides to the modern age for generations of writers and intellectuals. Christopher Hitchens, Norman Rush, James Wood, and Vivian Gornick have all declared themselves devotees—while Richard Rorty declared his essays “models of moral inquiry.” An award-winning essayist and critic, his writing has appeared in the Nation, Dissent, bookforum, Riritan, n+1, and the Boston Review among many others. He is a Contributing Editor at the Baffler and the author of six essay collections and a memoir, How to Be Depressed.

Christopher Lasch's Critique of Progress (w/ Chris Lehmann)

Christopher Lasch, the late historian and social critic, can be difficult to pin down. Despite writing with startling clarity and verve, Lasch  frustrates his readers' longing for clean partisan taxonomies and explicit programmatic statements. Taken up in recent years by Steve Bannon and  post-liberal populists, he was, in life, a man of the left who never ceased interrogating his own side's pathologies and historical blindspots — often using Marxism, psychoanalysis, and a rich, idiosyncratic historiography of the American scene to do so. As George Scialabba once put it, “Virtually every political and cultural tendency in recent American history has smarted under Lasch's criticism."  And even his most devoted readers have been left asking — “plaintively or exasperatedly,” writes Scialabba — what exactly does Christopher Lasch want? For our guest, editor and writer Chris Lehmann, Lasch was more than an admired intellectual iconoclast and gadfly; he was a treasured teacher and mentor — who was nonetheless difficult to get to know well. In our conversation, Lehmann finds fault with tendentious readings of Lasch's work by his most ardent fans and virulent enemies alike. To unearth the powerful critique running through Lasch's oeuvre, we spend most of this episode discussing his late-career opus The True and Only Heaven. Along the way, Lasch's insights frustrate and illuminate in equal measure, inspiring new variations on classic KYE themes: the relationship between particularity and solidarity, tradition and hierarchy, egalitarianism and expertise, and religion and political virtue. Come along for the ride!  Further Reading: Chris Lehmann, "Pilgrim's Progress," BookForum, Summer 2010.Chris Lehmann, "The Betrayal of Democracy," The Baffler, March, 13, 2017.George Scialabba, "A Whole World of Heroes: Christopher Lasch on Democracy," Dissent, 1995. Patrick Deneen, "Christopher Lasch and the Limits of Hope," First Things, Dec 2004.Matthew Sitman, "Whither the Religious Left?" “You what!?” The Police Chief roared. The Jelly beans he kept in a tin on his desk rattled as he pounded his desk. “Well sir…” the rookie replied squirming in his seat across from him. “I helped her cross the street. She was old and—” The rookie was cut off by a mighty bellow from the Chief, “WE. DON'T. DO THAT HERE.” “Sir I don't…” began the rookie, “you mean here as in...here? Like the police station?” “Exactly!” roared the Chief. “With all due respect sir we’re civil servants were supposed to be help—” “Don't give me that shit Corporal!” barked the Chief, who shook his head and then let out a long sigh before continuing, “look, you may be new here kid but I want you to know that your actions have consequences and your behavior today reflects poorly on all of us. I hope you think about that while Ramirez & Scialabba are out tonight on OT, looking to collect this uh..this Ethel or whatever her name is for questioning over today's uh...events.” “Questioning for today's events? But she did nothing wrong! She just cant move fast —she’s old!” “Just as I thought..” The Chief said gravely, “you’re too close to this, i’m taking you off the case.” “Case, what case” asked the rookie, “It was just an old woman having trouble crossing the street!” “God damn it…” snarled the Chief “That’s it! i'm putting you on unpaid leave, everything on the table now! Badge and gun especially” The rookie gaped in disbelief, “A-are you serious It’s my first day?” The Chief glowered at him, “Chop-Chop, I ain't got all day rookie!” Sighing the rookie relieved himself of all the standard issue police equipment: Flashlight, taser, flamethrower, club, gun, badge, predator wrist gauntlet from the movie: Predator, traffic whistle, handcuffs, flashlight with a spike on the end, zip ties, first aid kit and novelty truck nuts. When he had finished, the rookie could barely see the chief over the mountain of stuff that dominated the desk between them. Virtually naked now in the eyes of law enforcement the rookie turned toward the door to leave. He worked the knob and had almost stepped through before he heard the Chiefs voice behind him, “I said...everything.” The rookie closed his eyes and swore soundlessly. Then he slowly made his way back over to the Chiefs desk and slammed his half finished milkshake onto the desk. George Scialabba is a prolific critic and essayist known for his incisive, wide-ranging commentary on literature, philosophy, religion, and politics. He is also, like millions of others, a lifelong sufferer from clinical depression. In How To Be Depressed (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020), Scialabba presents an edited selection of his mental health records spanning decades of treatment, framed by an introduction and an interview with renowned podcaster Christopher Lydon. The book also includes a wry and ruminative collection of "tips for the depressed," organized into something like a glossary of terms—among which are the names of numerous medications he has tried or researched over the years. Together, these texts form an unusual, searching, and poignant hybrid of essay and memoir, inviting readers into the hospital and the therapy office as Scialabba and his caregivers try to make sense of this baffling disease. In Scialabba's view, clinical depression amounts to an "utter waste." Unlike heart surgery or a broken leg, there is no relaxing convalescence and nothing to be learned (except, perhaps, who your friends are). It leaves you weakened and bewildered, unsure why you got sick or how you got well, praying that it never happens again but certain that it will. Scialabba documents his own struggles and draws from them insights that may prove useful to fellow-sufferers and general readers alike. In the place of dispensable banalities—"Hold on," "You will feel better," and so on—he offers an account of how it's been for him, in the hope that doing so might prove helpful to others. George Scialabba grew up in East Boston, in the shadow of Logan Airport. He distinguished himself as an altar boy at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish and a third-baseman for the Mount Carmel Mohawks. He graduated Harvard College in 1969 and spent a year in graduate school at Columbia (European intellectual history), dropping out in 1970, never to return. Through most of the 1970s he meandered around the counterculture, knowing that something was happening there but never knowing what it was.In 1980 he debuted as a freelance book critic, becoming a regular contributor to the Village Voice, Boston Phoenix, Boston Globe, Boston Review, The Nation, Dissent, L.A. Weekly, Bookforum, and Commonweal before breaking into the big leagues (i.e., The Baffler) in 2012.He has published four essay collections: What Are Intellectuals Good For?
