Randee and her mom are very close. They have a wonderful relationship and Randee says "she's my best cheerleader."  A lot of that has to do with the honesty and open communication that they had from the very beginning-"adoption was normal, not a stigma, not a tragedy."  Also, Randee learned at a young age that just because you are blood related doesn't guarantee you a loving relationship.Lois was definitely a role model to Randee. But Randee also feels that she learned from things that Lois did and didn't t do and then would form her own opinions. Randee had the luxury of knowing that her mom "always had my back.".Unfortunately, growing up in the 70's, Randee's parents divorced and her mom went to work. She was able to get contract work, writing and editing government contracts. It was a stressful time for Lois, but she made the best of it. For example, her office didn't have a window, so she decided to put a picture of a window up on the wall. That made it feel so much better."The Only Songs We're Singing," was released April 2025 and "Leave No Trace" will be released August 2025.In “The Only Song Worth Singing”, the power of friendship is one of the major themes blended with myth and the power of music. Imagine Irish folklore combined with mysticism – makes for a magical read. She's also written Amazon Bestseller, Tune in Tomorrow and co-wrote the popular, The Law & Order: SVU Unofficial Companion and co-edited, Across the Universe: Tales of Alternative Beatles.Randee Dawn's Bio:Randee Dawn is a Brooklyn-based author and journalist focusing on speculative fiction across the categories (science-fiction, fantasy and horror) at night, while writing entertainment and lifestyle stories during the day for publications including Today.com, NBCNews.com, Variety, The Los Angeles Times and Emmy Magazine. You may have seen my name in other publications over the years, including Soap Opera Digest and The Boston Phoenix, E! I'm currently  represented by Bridget Smith at JABberwocky Literary Agency, and I frequently appear at conventions and workshops on panels and to give readings. My first novel, Tune In Tomorrow, was published by Solaris/Rebellion in 2022. In this episode Truth talks with Nate Homan,  author of “Diamonds and Blood : An Infamous West African Warlord's Bay State Jailbreak.”  Nate is a south Shore-born punk rock amateur boxer who graduated from Emerson College and has written for the Boston Phoenix, Metro Boston/NYC/ Philly, Front Page Detectives, DigBoston, and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. The two discuss the plight of Charles Taylor – and his rise from college campus radical to mass-murdering megalomaniac.   This began the night he slipped out of the Plymouth House of Correction in Plymouth, MA and made his way across the Atlantic Ocean to his homeland of Liberia, and he led a brutal coup d'etat in 1989. In 1991, Charles Taylor bankrolled a ruthless rebel army in Sierra Leone known for the abundance of child soldiers who hacked the arms off of enemies and innocent civilians alike. By conquering the mountains along the Liberian border, Charles Taylor hijacked the international diamond trade for nearly 15 years. After a bogus election in 1997, Charles Taylor became the 21st Commander in Chief of theRepublic of Liberia.  Perched on a throne of blood, Charles Taylor stacked fortunes in Swiss bank accounts. He broke bread with world leaders, Fortune 500 executives, mercenaries, mass murderers, gem trading jihadis, and big time American televangelists. At the end of his reign, Charles Taylor was convicted of international war crimes in 2012.   For more info: IG: @natehomanboston WEB: https://binj.news/2024/01/07/an-infamous-west-african-warlords-bay-state-jailbreak-2/   As always, please hit the subscribe button if you like and support what we do! This is about abuse, missing, and murdered children. Listen with care.In preparation for Friday's new episode with Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, a replay of Andy Puglisi's case first released in June 2023, in two parts. There are many updates to this story, despite the  decades-long mystery. In part one, we explore the haunting case of 10-year-old Andy Puglisi, the boy who vanished from his neighborhood, spotlighting the societal attitudes towards missing children during that time. The discussion delves into the failed police response, media portrayal, and subsequent changes in child protection laws.On Sunday, August 22, 1976, (we learn this is the actual date he was last seen), Andy Puglisi disappeared from a public pool in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, Andy's childhood friend and documentary filmmaker, spent years piecing together the events of that fateful day. Her decades-long investigation, highlighted in her documentary "Have You Seen Andy" and new podcast "Open Investigation," brings fresh perspectives to his case and others like his.It doesn't stop with Andy's story. We delve into the broader narrative of missing and murdered children in the 1970s, an era marked by systemic child abuse within the Catholic Church. This period saw high-profile cases like Etan Patz and, later, Adam Walsh, which led to the creation of crucial resources like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). We learn about Springfield boy, Danny Croteau, and the powerful forces that shielded his alleged killer, Father Richard R. Lavigne, a notorious child abuser who would later be convicted of molesting boys across Western Massachusetts, and the investigative work of journalists such as Kristen Lombardi, of the Boston Phoenix, whose work played a critical role in unmasking these crime against children.Crime of the Truest Kind - Episode 43 - What Happened To Andy Puglisi, Part OneSend a message to the showSupport the showFollow Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky | TikTok | Threads | YouTube For show notes & source information at CrimeoftheTruestKind.comGive the dogs a bone tip jar: buymeacoffee.com/truestkindBecome a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkindThis podcast has minimal profanity but from time to time you get one or some curse words. He's a prolific writer and creator, having been a part of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Kitchen Sink, the list goes on. Suffice to say, from Sherlock Holmes to Star Wars, if you've read good comics, you're read Mike Baron! Mike shares his Rush journey with us, dropping some deep cuts and sharing stories about: Writing horror and hanging out at the castle with Kevin J. Anderson (Neil Peart's writning partner on Clockwork Angels) Being the music editor of the Boston Phoenix in the 70's, listening to bands, and talking to musicians Having an intimate dinner with Freddie Mercury and Queen The value of “greatest of all times” lists, and where Rush falls on his list How a trash pulp-paperback led to a career in comicbook writing for some of the biggest names in the business How Marvel and DC have abandoned entertainment How to build a comic novel with dynamic narratives, just like Neil did Mike's fandom of Rush…it don't go so deep. But his favorite cuts are deep tracks, and if he had more time, he'd know more Rush. Today, the Spotlight shines On Brad Mindich, an entrepreneur who works directly with artists, athletes, and others in music, culture, and sports to expand their legacies and create powerful connections with their fans.Brad currently does this work as the founder and CEO of Inveniem/Definitive Authentic, which helps its clients organize, catalog, present, and oftentimes monetize their archives directly to their audiences.Brad has worked with Metallica, Def Leppard, Stephen Stills, basketball star Devin Booker, Monty Python co-founder Eric Idle, and many others. Our conversation took some fascinating turns, exploring the concept of “pre-nostalgia”, the longing for a future that was imagined in the past. We discussed the powerful impact of nostalgia on individuals and communities and how it can evoke positive or negative emotions. We also talked about the cultural influences and connections between various subcultures, particularly Rastafarianism, with its historical and social roots in and connection to Hinduism and Indian immigrants. At its most basic, Brad's work is about preserving cultural heritage, something his family has contributed to. Brad's father owned the Boston rock station WFNX and was the longtime publisher of The Boston Phoenix, the fabled underground newspaper with roots stretching back to 1965.–Dig DeeperVisit Definitive Authentic at definitiveauthentic.com and Inveniem at inveniem.comFollow Definitive Authentic on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (X)The Inveniem Company: Dedicated to Preserving and Expanding the Cultural Legacies of Bands, Artists, and OthersWhat Happened to the Boston Phoenix?WFNX | The Music Museum of New EnglandBehind The Metallica Black BoxDig into this episode's complete show notes at spotlightonpodcast.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? In this episode we're joined by the esteemed Joe "Mr. C" McEwen, who Zooms in from L.A. to reminisce about his storied career as a writer, DJ and A&R man. We begin in our guest's native Philadelphia, where his teenage mind was blown by a James Brown show in 1966, and follow him up to his adopted Boston. He recalls his early reviews for The Boston Phoenix and revisits his 1975 homage to Sam Cooke for The Real Paper. His 1977 encounter with a 19-year-old Michael Jackson prompts discussion of a comparatively low point in the future superstar's career. From the same year, Joe's profile of Joe Tex leads into clips from the late Cliff White's glorious audio interview with the country-soul legend who'd just scored a hit with the discofied 'Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)'. We discuss Tex's place in the southern soul pantheon before moving on to the marvellous Lost Soul compilations "Mr. C" assembled in 1982. We hear about Joe's A&R years at Columbia and then Sire/Reprise, taking in reminiscences of British bands Ride, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine. He also revisits his working friendships with Sire founder Seymour Stein and with previous RBP podcast guests Geoff Travis, Alan McGee and Rob Dickins. We hear about his role in the '90s "alt.country" phenomenon via the signing of Uncle Tupelo and his subsequent association with spinoff bands Wilco and Son Volt. We conclude with the Sire signing of Muscle Shoals legend Dan Penn for 1994's Do Right Man album. Mark talks us out with quotes from newly-added library pieces about sometime Ikette P.P. Arnold (1967), the Stones' Keith Richard(s) (1969), doomed dub poet Mikey Smith (1983) and the deeply druggy Alice in Chains (1993)... after which Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on pieces about laptop pop (2001) and Kendrick Lamar (2012). Many thanks to special guest Joe McEwen. Pieces discussed: Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson, Joe Tex: The Soul Of An Underdog, Joe Tex audio, Lost Soul, Vols. 1-3, Uncle Tupelo live, Uncle Tupelo: Are you ready for the alt. country?, Wilco: Last Twang in Town, Dan Penn: Once More With Feeling, P.P. Arnold, Keith Richard(s), Mikey Smith: Poet and His Roots, Alice in Chains: Misery loves company, Laptop punk and the powerbook pop and Kendrick Lamar: Inside the Year's Best Album.

“Sometimes the truth is just too much, and sometimes it's not enough.” That's a line from Sarah Tomlinson's new novel, The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers, the story of a young ghostwriter scratching at the truth that threatens the legend of the fictional rock band of the title.  A veteran journalist, essayist, music critic, ghostwriter, and memoirist, Sarah's work has appeared in The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Review of Books, Marie Claire, Los Angeles Times, Publishers Weekly, and Huffington Post. Her new novel puts an exclamation point on the maxim that says writers should write what they know: Sarah has covered the recording industry and the music scene for years, writing for Spin.com, Billboard.com and penning a local music column for the Boston Phoenix. She's even written band bios for record labels like Virgin, Red Ink/Columbia, and MySpace Records, and contributed to the electronic press kits for artists on Warner Bros. Records.   As a ghostwriter, she has helped to write more than a dozen books, including three New York Times best-sellers and the forthcoming Dancing on the Edge, co-authored with the iconoclastic actor, dancer, choreographer Russ Tamblyn.   Join us for a candid conversation on what it means to pick up a pen on behalf of someone else, and then to set that pen down to tell the tale of a ghostwriter looking to make sense of the senselessness and sensibility of a rock ‘n roll life gone sideways.  Learn more about Sarah Tomlinson: Website The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers Dancing on the Edge Good Girl: A Memoir Facebook Instagram Twitter Please support the sponsors who support our show: Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog  Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order  Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Darryl "God" Whiting ran a 100+ member drug gang out of the Orchard Park public housing project in the early 90's. The operation is said to have overseen a 24hr a day crack distribution business, that wrought havoc in Roxbury. He was celebrated as a local hero, while simultaneously decimating the entire neighborhood. Darryl also had legitimate businesses and a thriving "Social Club" in Grove Hall, however it was merely a front for selling drugs. "God's" reign lasted about 4-5 years, making at times $100,000 a day. The organization was ultimately penetrated by a maverick undercover Boston Housing police officer Jeff Coy. Coy and other cops brought the "New York Boys" down and the prison sentences were legendary. Darry Whiting received a life sentence for leading this sprawling criminal organization. The housing development was largely ruined by Whiting's organization. In August 1988, Tiffany Moore was shot three times in what police would call a rival gang turf war on Humboldt Ave in Roxbury. The streets were not safe, Tiffany's own mother sent her away to keep her from the violence that was taking over their neighborhood, only for it to take her back in the cruelest way possible. The city was outraged and put pressure on the Boston Police to solve her murder and do something about the violence. Her death was covered nationwide and would symbolize the disorder that ruled the streets, the kind of chaos that elicited fear among those who were outside looking in. Police targeted a low level drug dealer named Shawn Drumgold, painting him as a savage gang member. This episode is about a murdered child, drugs, gang violence, witness intimidation, police and prosecutorial misconduct, wrongful convictions, and a still-unsolved crime. There is no justice in putting innocent people in prison. The New England Innocence Project: newenglandinnocence.orgOctober 2 is International Wrongful Conviction DayLearn about the Exoneree Network: newenglandinnocence.org/exoneree-networkJusticeforSeanEllis.comTrial 4 is the Netflix documentary about Sean Ellis's wrongful convictionWatch the trailerTwo core sources (more will be listed in show note at crimeofthetruestkind.com)Doubt Cast Over Tiffany Moore Verdict by Dick Lehr, Boston Globe, May 2003Thanks to Dick and The Globe's great reporting or Shawn Drumgold might have died in prison.Coming Home by Chris Wright, Boston Phoenix, Dec 2003CrimeoftheTruestKind.comFollow @crimeofthetruestkindOperation True Crime & Wine, our live crime eventThurs, Nov 9 at Off Cabot, Beverly, MassGet tickets now!Promo from PNW Haunts & Homicides: Join Caitlyn and Cassie as they chat about true crime, the paranormal, and all kinds of spooky sh*t in the Pacific Northwest. Dan and Ellen talk with Catherine Tumber, who was a former colleague of Dan's at The Boston Phoenix, a longtime friend, and a source for his 2013 book, "The Wired City." These days she's an independent scholar and journalist who's affiliated with the Penn Institute for Urban Research. She's also a fellow at the MassINC Gateway Cities Innovation Institute and a contributing editor for The Baffler.  She is the author of "Small, Gritty, and Green: The Promise of America's Smaller Industrial Cities in a Low-Carbon World." She holds a PhD and a master's degree from the University of Rochester. She also has a bachelor's in social thought and political economy from UMass-Amherst.  In our Quick Takes, Ellen is back on the Midwestern beat with good news about a startup weekly paper called the Denison Free Press in Iowa. It's scrappy as hell. Or heck, as they might say in Iowa. Dan has a rave for a new effort to inject $500 million into local news over the next five years. But that rave comes with a caveat. The initiative, known as Press Forward, brings together 22 different foundations in an effort to provide a significant amount of funding for community journalism. But there may be less to that effort than meets the eye.

The Making of SURFER ROSA by Pixies - featuring Joey Santiago, David Lovering and Steve Albini

For the 35th anniversary of Pixies' landmark debut album, SURFER ROSA, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Charles Thompson and Joey Santiago bonded as suitemates at the University of Massachusettes Amherst, they decided to form a band. By putting an ad in the Boston Phoenix for “a female vocalist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary,” they connected with Kim Deal, who was the only one to answer their ad. Deal's husband, John Murphy, introduced them to drummer David Lovering and the Pixies lineup was solidified. As they began playing around Boston, producer Gary Smith offered to record a demo for them at Fort Apache Studios. After Ivo Watts-Russell of the label 4AD heard the tapes, he signed them to a contract and they released some of the demo recordings as an EP called Come On Pilgrim. They turned their attention to recording a full-length album and Watts-Russell suggested a young engineer named Steve Albini. Albini traveled to Boston to meet the band and they began recording the next day at a studio called Q Division. In this episode, guitarist Joey Santiago describes the early connection he shared with Charles Thompson and how SURFER ROSA solidified the band's sound and was an honest depiction of who they were. David Lovering talks about his approach to simplifying his drumming and why SURFER ROSA remains his personal favorite Pixies album. Engineer, Steve Albini reflects on how this record marked the first time he worked with a band he didn't know and how he set out to prove his value by making unique suggestions and how that impacted the finished product. From Charles and Kim's contrasting vocal styles to their trademark loud quiet loud dynamics to the benefits of metal picks and recording in a tiled bathroom to the uniquely dark subject matter of the lyrics to the recorded sounds of the session underway, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

What happened to Andy Puglisi? Part one. This is a true crime, local history, and storytelling podcast. I write about crimes, yes, I set the scene, connect story themes, I talk about things that happened here, in Massachusetts and New England. This episode is about murdered and missing children, one in particular, about child sexual abuse, the attitudes among the public at large in regard to this topic, and the part that the Catholic Church has played in the serial abuse of children. If this is something that will hurt you, impede your own healing, or offend you, it may not be something you wish to listen to. This often goes unsaid, but this podcast is not for children.   Andy Puglisi vanished on August 21, 1976* from his neighborhood in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was two weeks away from his eleventh birthday. His case remains one of the greatest mysteries in the state's history.  Andy disappeared long before the many advances were made to assist in locating missing children in the hours immediately following an abduction. *Reposted new audio with edited date to reflect the day Andy was last seen. The search for Andy began on August 22, 1976. Dan and Ellen talk with John Garrett, who, along with his wife, Jennifer, started the monthly Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 in Texas. They had three full-time employees and covered two towns in Texas, Round Rock and Pflugerville. Community Impact expanded into Arizona and Tennessee, and by 2018, Forbes reported, the Garretts had 220 employees and annual revenue of $27 million. They have an online presence, of course, but they also believe in print: their newspapers are distributed by mail every month. They even opened their own printing plant to handle their newspaper and other jobs. They have a sign out front that says: "Print Ain't Dead." But as we prepared for this podcast, John told us they've just made some tough decisions. They sold their Phoenix operations and closed their small Nashville outlet. They've decided to focus on Texas, where their business is doing well, and they have fresh plans for the future there.  Dan and Ellen devote the entire Quick Takes segment of the podcast to the Muzzle Awards, a Fourth of July roundup of outrages against freedom of speech and of the press in the six New England states. The awards were conceived of by Dan's friend and occasional collaborator Harvey Silverglate, the noted Boston civil liberties lawyer. For many years, they were published by the late, lamented Boston Phoenix. They've been hosted by GBH News since 2013, and this year marks the 25th anniversary.

It is a real thrill to interview our first finalist from our inaugural playwriting competitions - Arthur Boatin. Arthur's play NOW DEPARTED placed third in our inaugural 10-minute playwriting competition. A character-driven piece, NOW DEPARTED is the story of a chance meeting by small-town natives Rhonda and Clayton. They learn who have in common and compare notes on parenting, drinking, and losing a partner. Our judges described the play as a "subtle and effective slice of life mini-drama. Realistic dialogue and a well-constructed story — not easy within such a short form!" Arthur Boatin is a Michigan native who since 1985 has lived in Maine, where much of his writing is set. His employment history includes proofreading, newspaper reporting, foreign student advising, and teaching high school and college English. He worked as a guide in the American pavilion at the Brussels Worlds Fair. In 1959-60 he was a soldier in the U.S. Army. Arthur's one-act plays have been produced (2015) and stage read (2017, 2021) in Portland, Maine. His first full-length play, THE DAUGHTER OF THE RULER OF THE SEAS AND TIDES, received a Zoom reading by Maine Playwrights Festival in March 2021. His work is included in the Smith and Kraus publications THE BEST MEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES 2020 and THE BEST WOMEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES 2020. Arthur has published short fiction in literary magazines, including Worcester Review, Whetstone, Anastamos, and Western Humanities Review. I first became aware of Ted Drozdowski when I was working at the Boston Phoenix, reading his reviews and features as I helped to transfer them from the print edition to the Web. It wasn't until later, when I put together a benefit show and Ted stepped in as a player and an organizer, that I really got to see how powerful a guitar player and songwriter he was and is. Then I got to see how he put the two together, doing a show on the history of the blues at a local museum, and using his guitar to illustrate different periods and styles. For years, Ted has led recorded and gigged with his project, Scissormen. But with this new album, Coyote Motel, he has expanded his musical landscape. There are more players, deeper textures, more ambitious songwriting. The psychedelic sounds from previous work are at the forefront here, which you might have heard on last week's featured track, “Still Among the Living.” He's also still a prolific music journalist, now an editor with Premier Guitar. If you're a guitarist and gearhead, you've likely read his stuff in the magazine's excellent “Rig Rundown” series. You will hear about all of that and more in this conversation, as well as Ted's heartfelt explanation of what moving to Nashville has done for him, as a musician and a human being. You can find out more about Coyote Motel and all of his work at teddrozdowski.com, on Twitter at @scissormen, and on Facebook under Scissormen. The featured track this week is an excerpt from Sarah Moss's new book, Ghost Wall. It's a short read, and a short audio – just under four hours – but this is a thick and thorny story. The set-up is that a family of three has joined an anthropology professor and a handful of students on a field trip in the North of England to live as the inhabitants would have in the Iron Age. Teenaged Silvie and her mother are just passengers here for father's obsession with a time when England was, in his estimation, pure. He insists that Silvie and her mother adhere to the rules of the age, even if the land and local conditions have changed to make that impossible. Silvie's father uses Iron Age mores as a cudgel and a means of control, a way to shame Silvie and her mother into obedience. Her father is never proud of her unless she is acting as an avatar for his limited view of the world. But out amongst these college students, especially the free-spirited Molly, Silvie is finding her own philosophy, her own sexuality, her own self. The studies become metaphors for the dangers of nationalism, racism, gender inequality, and romanticizing the morals of a bygone era. The locals used to sacrifice what they love most to the bog, and build walls topped with skulls and bodies to scare off the enemy – their “most powerful magic,” as it's referred to in the book. We pick up the story here as Silvie is returning from foraging to find her father and the professor talking around the fire. You can find the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Powell's, or your local bookstore, and the audio on Audible.

Years ago, I reviewed Mark Geary's album Ghosts for the sadly departed Boston Phoenix. I would pop that CD in my player on occasion, but fell out of touch with his music for a while. Then a couple of months before this interview, I got an instant message from Geary on Facebook that he'd be playing a few miles away. It was around two in the morning, but I got my tickets a few minutes later, and saw a fantastic show at a little place called The Carriage House in Newburyport, Massachusetts. It was wonderful to catch up with Geary and hear his new music. At the beginning of the conversation, we talk a bit about his recent gigs in Portugal, a place Geary had not played previously. That piqued my curiosity, since Geary is such a talented lyricist and a great storyteller live. I wondered how that would translate in a place where there might be a language barrier. That's where we start, talking about playing for international audiences. The circumstances of the Carriage House show led to a conversation about Facebook and Instagram as tools for getting the word out about shows and new music. In the middle of his career, the parameters of promoting yourself as a one-man-traveling-band changed, and while it's still very hands on, it can feel kind of insincere. We talked about not letting social media get in the way of actually creating art, a difficult proposition when you need to fill a room to keep gigging to even have a place to play your songs for people. We got into details about his new album The Fool in the latter half of the podcast, how people don't always catch the humor in his lyrics, and about watching Colin Quinn during his time in New York. For horror fans, there is a bit at the end about the movie A Quiet Place, which Geary had said he was looking forward to seeing when I saw him live. Very slight spoilers in that conversation, if you're sensitive to that type of thing. If you don't know Geary, I hope hearing him prods you to check out his music, and if you do know him, this wide-ranging conversation should be a treat.

Occasionally I dip back into the archives of comedians, musicians, and authors I've interviewed for the Boston Globe, the Boston Phoenix, or various other publications over the years and give you a few short bits of the recordings. This episode, it's Lily Tomlin, whom I interviewed for the Globe in 2008 and 2013. Tomlin is a delightful person and a delightful performer. If you've never seen her live, make a point of it. If you can't feel good about being a human being after you've seen her, I don't know what to do for you. She's very open and game to talk about anything. My only real job as an interviewer here is to get the ball rolling and get out of the way. The first clip is from the 2013 interview. I asked Tomlin about performing live, and got a short history of her fascination with characters and how that developed from the shows she would put on as a kid to entertain her family and friends. The second bit is very short, from the 2008 interview, just a detail I enjoy. You can see Tomlin on Netflix now opposite Jane Fonda in Grace and Frankie.
