In this episode I take an exhaustive look at the diverse perspectives of depression, that pervasive mood disorder that afflicts far too many people. I explore its gradual onset and chronic, often life-long course, and highlight the overwhelming features of depression, from low mood and poor appetite to poor sleep and loss of interest in pleasurable activities. I also explore the less appreciated dimension of the pain of depression.I illustrate the lived experience of depression with such fascinating patient accounts as that of Sally Brampton titled Shoot the Damned Dog, of Lewis Wolpert titled Malignant Sadness, of Andrew Solomon titled The Noonday Demon, and of William Styron titled Darkness Visible. Significantly, the memoirs stress the difficulty people have in recognising that their low mood has crossed the threshold into depression. The interplay of familial and environmental risk factors of depression is also a major theme of the podcast which emphasised such critical provoking life events as divorce and loss of income. I also discussed the risk of suicide that may complicate depression, a theme that I explored by relying on the book When It is Darkest by psychologist and suicide expert Rory O'Connor.I also discuss the different treatment modalities of depression, from antidepressants and psychotherapy to somatic therapy, the long road to recovery, and the ever-present risk of treatment resistance and relapse. Other themes the podcast covers are the shame and stigma that accompany depression. The historical themes of the podcast highlight the insights of Abu Zayd Al Balkhi in depression and cognitive behaviour therapy, that roles played by Sigmund Freud and Joseph Breuer in establishing psychoanalysis, and that of Nathan Kline in the development of the first antidepressant.

We continue Walking with Thoreau through the wild terrain of uncivilized thought — where genius shatters the temples of knowledge, exposing the unseen forces shaping our reality. Thoreau reminds us that it is the wild, uncultivated mind that truly delights, as free and swift as a mallard in flight. In this episode of The Peripatetics, we explore the invisible connections that bind us — atomic thoughts dancing like pollen on a pond, elusive yet undeniable. From the rediscovery of an ancient poem, lost for a thousand years, to my own realization of the creative life's atomic nature, we delve into the tension between certainty and wildness. We examine how long-suppressed ideas, once freed, can spark revolutions in thought, science, and art. Our journey turns toward the question of the untamed intellect's role in creativity and the quest for truth itself. Through poetry, philosophy, and personal revelation, we ask: What does it mean to make the darkness visible, and how can we reclaim the wildness within us all? Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: The Unseen Forces of Genius: This episode explores the invisible elements that drive creativity and knowledge. Through Thoreau's lens, we encounter the wild, uncultivated thought that shatters conventional understanding, revealing the unseen forces that shape our reality, much like atomic particles that move beneath the surface. The Tension Between Certainty and Wildness: Drawing on the rediscovery of Lucretius' On the Nature of Things, this episode delves into the friction between structured knowledge and untamed intellect. It highlights how suppressed ideas, once unleashed, have the power to revolutionize science, philosophy, and art. Creation as a Manifestation of the Wild: By reflecting on personal revelations about the creative process, the episode likens creation to the atomic nature of existence. Creativity is not about bringing something from nothing, but about connecting wild, seemingly invisible thoughts and making them visible. Making the Darkness Visible: Inspired by Thoreau's words, the episode explores the act of illuminating what is hidden, both within ourselves and the world. This theme weaves through poetry, philosophy, and personal reflection, asking how we can uncover the truths buried in our subconscious and wild nature. The Power of Untamed Thought: Through Thoreau's celebration of wild thinking, the episode questions the role of untamed intellect in the pursuit of truth. It challenges the listener to reclaim their wildness, to look beyond the domesticated structures of knowledge and rediscover the deeper truths that lie beyond civilization's grasp. Wildness as a Catalyst for Creative Thought: The episode presents wild, uncivilized thinking as essential to artistic and intellectual breakthroughs. By embracing the unpredictability and spontaneity of wild thought, we open ourselves to new ways of seeing and understanding the world, much like the way atomic theories reshaped our view of the universe. About The Show Inspired by the ancient tradition of walking philosophers — from Aristotle and his followers to Thoreau and Nietzsche — who walked as a way to engage deeply with their thoughts and ideas, The Peripatetics wanders through th e thoughts of great thinkers in nature, art, literature, and philosophy as they intersect with the simple, transformative act of walking. In season 1, we are discussing Henry David Thoreau's definitive essay on the subject of walking, connecting it with wisdom from a wide swath of philosophic tradtions which share his devotion to achieving clarity and peace through movement. Whether you're a fellow walker, someone looking for a bit of tranquility, or just curious about how a good walk can change your perspective, you're in the right place. May your path be smooth and your pace steady. The Light of a Mason is Darkness Visible illuminates the everlasting quest for enlightenment, a journey paved with humility and self-awareness. In this profound exploration, the human thirst for knowledge meets its boundaries, represented by the shadows that lurk beyond the torchlight's reach.Embarking on this noble path demands an understanding that complete truth may forever elude our grasp, compelling us to embrace the endless cycle of learning. Humility, then, becomes our steadfast guide through the forest of ignorance, urging us to confront the universal conflict of good and evil.Recognizing the existence of malevolence fortifies our moral compass, sharpening our senses to choose righteousness and cultivate compassion. For true enlightenment transcends mere rational thought, seeking divine wisdom to unveil the grand mysteries that evade our mortal ken.In this lifelong metamorphosis, suffering emerges as a catalyst for growth, fostering empathy and meaningful bonds with others treading similar paths. The light, thus, resides not in eradicating darkness but in harmonizing the dualities that define our existence.Enlightenment beckons us to embrace the spectrum of experiences, integrating wisdom from the balance between opposites, ultimately attaining a profound understanding of ourselves and the cosmos we inhabit.Show Notes:Watch as a Video on YoutubeRead original article on SubstackFollow the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on SpotifySubscribe to the Daily Masonic Progress Podcast on Apple PodcastsRead and subscribe to Daily Masonic Progress on SubstackWatch and Subscribe Youtube

On episode 171, we welcome James Hibbard to discuss the philosophy of cycling and using it for self-creation; the business of cycling and why the sport no longer produces individual riders; whether American capitalism can be escaped by specific individuals; Nietzsche and the existential, human ideal; America's obsession with winning and winners, and whether anyone is really happy; James' cycling career and his realization that being an athlete was no longer sustainable; coping with existential depression, and how Styron's Darkness Visible perfectly described his experience; the perils of idealism and how it precludes us from forming genuine relationships; mindfulness and how to focus on the present; the moral of The Great Gatsby; and the inherent limitations of philosophical inquiry. James Hibbard's writing has appeared in journals including Ploughshares, Aporia, Otherwise, Noetic, and Aethlon. In this episode, which originally aired in radio format on March 3rd, 2022, I explore some of the ideas presented in William Styron's 1990 book, Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness. I also talk about Virginia Woolf's experiences with depression, as presented in Hermione Lee's biography of her, and about Francis Weller's perspective on the illness, as presented in his book The Wild Edge of Sorrow.
In this episode of On the Same Page, Seamus and Blake are joined by friend of the show Troy to discuss William Styron's “Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness”, an abridged version of which is currently in print as a Penguin Vintage Mini under the title “Depression”. Growing from a lecture delivered to the Department of Psychiatry of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and later an article which first appeared in the December 1989 edition of Vanity Fair, “Darkness Visible” sees Styron describe his sober descent into a treacherous depression and his eventual ascent through artistic heights and hospitalisation to recovery. This little book that packs a big punch speaks to the idiosyncrasy of the illness that has come to be called ‘depression', and the many pitfalls in the road of perseverance. Seamus, Blake and Troy came together to reflect on the book and their own experiences of that hellish place where, as Milton put it, there is “No light, but rather darkness visible”. Some of the books discussed in this episode include: "Depression" by William Styron "The Rolling Stone Interview" by Susan Sontag "Picasso" by Timothy Hilton “The Complete Fairy Tales” by Hans Christian Anderson Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesamepagepod_ Email: seamusandblake@gmail.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/on.the.same.page.podcast/ ---------- #bookpodcast #podcast #depression #love #alcoholism #suicide #therollingstones #picasso #williamstyron #albertcamus #brahms #susansontag #hanschristiananderson #fairytales #literature #books #novels #podbean #spotifypodcasts #applepodcasts #audible #books #novels #audibleau #lit #onthesamepage

A searing and brave memoir that offers a new understanding of suicide as a distinct mental illness. As the sun lowered in the sky one Friday afternoon in April 2006, acclaimed author Donald Antrim found himself on the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building, afraid for his life. In this moving memoir, Antrim vividly recounts what led him to the roof and what happened after he came back down: two hospitalizations, weeks of fruitless clinical trials, the terror of submitting to ECT—and the saving call from David Foster Wallace that convinced him to try it—as well as years of fitful recovery and setback. One Friday in April reframes suicide—whether in thought or action—as an illness in its own right, a unique consequence of trauma and personal isolation, rather than the choice of a depressed person. A necessary companion to William Styron's classic Darkness Visible, this profound, insightful work sheds light on the tragedy and mystery of suicide, offering solace that may save lives.

Naomi Osaka's decision to withdraw from the French Open rather than face a post match press conference became worldwide news. Osaka says her depression and anxiety make it impossible for her to speak in public. Most observers sympathize with Osaka's reserve, and castigate the tour directors for making her quit. But tennis legend Billy Jean King and most of Osaka's fellow players feel that successful players should appear publicly in order to raise the visibility and profitability of women's tennis. For herself, Osaka made $55 million last year— $50 million of it due to product endorsements. But her fellow pros often make nothing like that amount, and they resent Osaka's pulling away from public appearances, which would benefit all of them. What could resolve Osaka's predicament? Apparently treatment hasn't done so. Would practicing public speaking, Stanton and Zach wonder, be helpful? Stanton then reviews the history of confessionals by prominent people who have outed their substance and mental problems — including television comedian Sid Caesar, depression memoir (Darkness Visible) author William Styron, and CBS Sunday morning program host Jane Pauley. None provides good evidence that disease self-labeling and treatment lead to ultimate improvement. The American Temperance tradition is steeped in public confessions, which carried over to AA, and have now permeated the US. Yet depression, anxiety and bipolar diagnosis have been increasing dramatically in recent decades. Stanton and Zach discuss this never-ending cycle of self-defeating behavior, then what lies ahead for Osaka and the tennis program she abandoned. Finally, Stanton and Zach wonder about an article in a leading magazine saying that drinking is worse than ever in the US. But the author loves wine and wants to continue drinking it! Stanton and Zach wonder whether American attitudes towards alcohol have improved at all since Prohibition. ***** SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel ***** To get more of our content and help us grow: https://www.youtube.com/c/LifeProcessProgram?sub_confirmation=1 ***** FOLLOW us on Social ***** - Facebook: https://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - Twitter : https://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm - Instagram: https://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program ***** CONTACT US ****** - Website: https://lifeprocessprogram.com - Text us: +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support

This is Roald Tweet on Rock Island. For several years in the 1980s, there was a night janitor at a local college library who was as interesting as any of the books. As with many school janitors, sweeping was only a cover job; his real purpose for working in a library was to corner patrons who came there eager for knowledge and set them straight before they reached the shelves of books and became contaminated.

Nainita Desai is a British composer and sound designer who has scored countless bespoke scores for film and TV including: BBC, HBO, ITV and C4. She has studied the sitar, piano, guitar, tabla and violin. She has worked with artists such as Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor. Some of her recent scoring projects include the WWII thriller, ENEMY WITHIN, the psychological horror film DARKNESS VISIBLE and THE LIFE AFTER. Another recent project is for the 2018 film UNTAMED ROMANIA, the most successful non-fiction film in Romania. It premiered at the Transylvania Film Festival 2018.UNTAMED ROMANIA is a film that reveals the beauty of the European country as it is, raw, magical but fragile at the same time. The film focuses on the beautiful unspoiled lands tucked within the country but moreover on the numerous forms of wildlife that live there and how their lives are dictated by the seasons. It is a never ending battle for survival and Untamed Romania tells their stories. The film will made its international debut on 18th of March in Washington, at an ecological film festival and on 12th of April in London, at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) gala. In this episode, Nainita Desai talks about the unique challenges and opportunities afforded to her through UNTAMED ROMANIA - writing her first score for a large scale orchestra. Desai discusses in detail how she reveals the characters of the animals through her musical themes and, in contrast, how the music she wrote for the various landscapes depicted was directly influenced by those landscapes themselves. Finally, she reveals which piece was the most difficult and how Untamed Romania was different from all of the other documentary scores she has written before.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:59 - Main Theme06:00 - Fire Salamander08:21 - Bear Mischief09:20 - Catch the Mayfly10:36 - Wild Boar and Wolves13:43 - A Chrysalis Awakens15:47 - Golden Eagle18:06 - Autumn ApproachesSOUNDTRACKA soundtrack release is imminent, but an official release date has yet to be announced.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERYou can find out more about and hear more music by Nainita Desai at their official site http://nainitadesai.com/ or follow her on Twitter @nainitadesaiABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.comSUBSCRIBEiTunesSpotifyStitcher RadioRadioPublicGoogle Play PodcastsRSS Feed

Psychology professor Stephen Hinshaw, author of Another Kind of Madness, a memoir of mental illness in his own family, discusses the books closest to his heart. Some deal directly with mental illness, like Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle and William Styron's account of his own depression, Darkness Visible. Some deal with wrenching moral dilemmas, like Beloved and Sophie's Choice. And he draws it all together with E. O. Wilson's Consilience, which seeks to unify all knowledge.

Presented on 17 June 2016 by Allan Duffy. In the last 50 years astronomers have come to realise that there exists an invisible type of mass in the Universe, outweighing all of the atoms in every star, planet and person five times over. It's responsible for holding the galaxy together, for making the galaxies form where they do in the cosmos and is our best guide to physics beyond the Higgs boson, aka the 'god' particle. Yet astronomers are no nearer to understanding its nature. Using a combination of baby universes created on Australia's most powerful telescopes, next generation telescopes like the Australian SKA Pathfinder, and a wine glass, Alan will explore what we know about the invisible and how Australia may uncover the most sought after particle in physics with the world's first dark matter detector in the Southern Hemisphere, SABRE.
Irish photographer Seamus Murphy was born in England in 1959, grew up in Dublin, made his escape to the USA after college, where he lived in New York and San Francisco and now lives in London. He has over 30 years experience working as a documentary photographer all over the world and is the author of four books, including A Darkness Visible the result of 14 years shooting in Afghanistan. As mentioned earlier, he is the recipient of seven World Press Photo awards for his work in Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Peru and Ireland and received The World Understanding Award from Pictures of the Year in 2005 in the USA. The film he made on his Afghan work - also entitled A Darkness Visible - won the Liberty in Media Prize in 2011 and was nominated for an Emmy. He has worked with musician PJ Harvey on film and photography projects including their most recent collaboration The Hollow of the Hand. His latest book The Republic, a personal portrait of Ireland, was published in March 2016. And it was with The Republic that we started off.
For this interview episode, Derek talks with Arvind Ethan David about his current work on the IDW miniseries, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: A Spoon Too Short. He writes that title, working with Ilias Kyriazis on art, and he was the editor of last year's earlier Dirk Gently series. Arvind talks with Derek extensively about his fascination with this unorthodox detective, his association with the late Douglas Adams, and the curious road he traveled to get into comics. A Spoon Too Short isn't an outright adaptation of any of Adams's novels, although its title springs from an alternative title the writer had been considering for a book he was working on at the time of his death. And fans of Douglas Adams will recognize in the comic plenty of allusions to novelist's body of work. Arvind also shares some inside information -- at least, what he's able to disclose -- about the new Dirk Gently BBC series that will begin this fall, where he will work with Max Landis to bring the Adams character to television for the second time. The guys also discuss the upcoming Darkness Visible, an original comics series that Arvind is writing with Mike Carey and that will be coming out from IDW later this year. This is a busy time for the solicitor/producer/editor/writer, but in this interview Arvind takes the time to share his experiences and whet listeners' appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things.
Shortly after arriving in Belgium, I learned of ‘Laura’ – a 24-year-old woman who had sought the right to be euthanised after years of unrelieved mental suffering. Immediately, I heard alarm bells. My gut reaction? A 24-year-old who’s not terminally ill? Surely there’s a point at which a society says ‘no: you have too much life ahead of you for us to help you die’. If you’d asked me to tell you the point where it began to feel uncomfortable, this was it. After years of deep isolation, Marjorie Vangansbeke went to ULteam in pursuit of euthanasia. Instead, she came away with a diagnosis that helped her re-embrace her life — Photo: Emily Sexton The days that followed, where I talked with some of Belgium’s leading psychiatrists and physicians, were amongst the most intense I’ve ever experienced. Emotionally, I couldn’t shake the thought that this didn’t seem right. But intellectually, I wondered: is there more here than I know? To be honest, I toyed with not including this story in the podcast: it is so fraught with ambiguity and nuance that I feared it could easily be misunderstood. But two things persuaded me to continue with it. Firstly, that it was the people treating this young woman who had alerted me to her case. They wanted me to look at it – to try and understand. And secondly? A meeting I had, two hours out of Brussels, with a man whose sadness was so intense it was almost visible. The story he told me would change my understanding of the world. It led me to a question I had never considered before: what if the offer of euthanasia could actually save lives? Pierre Pol Vincke and his daughter Edith who, after 18 years of severe mental illness and many denied attempts to seek relief through euthanasia, took her own life while in a psychiatric ward — Photos: supplied 'She realised that she was already dead, and whenever she asked for help for euthanasia, the answer of the doctors was to condemn her to stay alive.' Maybe it’s technology, or just the nature of our society today, but we seem to have long lost the art of writing letters. Letters were a way we once touched based with our friends; a way of exchanging ideas and feelings, of sharing the complexity and eccentricity of daily life. It should be no surprise then, that one of our greatest literary lights of the twentieth century, William Styron, author of Lie Down in Darkness, Confession of Nat Turner, Sophie's Choice, and his seminal work on depression, Darkness Visible, should have written a collection of letters that will stand with any of the literary greats. Years after his death, in 2006, Rose Styron, his bride of 53 years has organized and edited the the thousands of letters that would become the Selected Letters of William Styron. My conversation with Rose Styron:
Learning to face what we already know...
Darkness Visible; Sophie's Choice Styron on depression and the vileness of the world. He tells what it's like to kill off his favorite characters and survive.
