What if the horizon of the workers' movement has truly ended? On this thought-provoking episode, we welcome Ross Wolfe to dissect the enduring legacy and contemporary relevance of Loren Goldner a monumental figure in left communism. We delve into Goldner's solitary stance amid post-structuralism, his fierce critiques of post-colonialism, and his eye-opening reviews, such as his take on Max Elbaum's "Revolutions in the Air." Walsh offers a rare glimpse into Goldner's mentorship of writers and theorists, his influence on the New York ultra-left scene, and his rigorous examination of movements like Occupy and Maoism. Our discussion continues by contrasting the intellectual debates between Troploin and Theorie Communise with Goldner's unwavering belief in the working class as a pivotal historical force. We touch on Goldner's opposition to third-worldism and post-colonial thought, his rich academic background, and his critical stance against post-structuralism and Maoism. Walsh further critiques contemporary intellectual currents, making connections between Goldner's ideas and ongoing global workers' struggles. We also delve into Christopher Lasch's critiques of American culture, discussing his departure from Marxism, his analysis of cultural malaise and narcissism, and his interactions with feminists. Walsh draws intriguing links between Lasch's thoughts and contemporary thinkers like Anselm Jappe, who critique modern capitalist society. The episode wraps up with a broad look at the dissatisfaction with the mainstream left and the bleak state of contemporary leftist movements. We highlight the significant differences between resistance movements like BDS and the anti-apartheid efforts, underlining the harsh realities faced by Palestinians today. Furthermore, we explore the unexpected political realignments of former radicals and the implications of anti-Americanism within the left, especially concerning the Ukraine-Russia war. Stay tuned for an insightful update from our guest on their upcoming research and writings on Marxism and the family, promising a series of thought-provoking essays in the year ahead. But outside the walls of Lasch, the Big Ten is changing around them. Two major names joined Ohio State and Michigan recently, and today, on the BWI Live Show, we're talking about those additions. Chip Kelly left UCLA late into the offseason to be the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, while NFL defensive coordinator Wink Martindale left the pros to join Michigan. How will those changes late in the cycle affect Penn State? We're discussing that, plus former Penn State players Ji'ayire "Tig Brown" and Donovan Smith's play in the Super Bowl. But as always, you can find the replay here embedded in the article. Penn State offensive tackle succession discussion Former Penn State left tackle Donovan Smith won his second Super Bowl on Sunday with the Kansas City Chiefs. He's had a long career as a starting left tackle in the NFL, but not every Nittany Lions fan celebrates him like they do other successful players from the program. We discuss the lineage of left tackles under head coach James Franklin and how his time in Happy Valley colors the way fans feel about him. That conversation then spins to include Rasheed Walker, who had a similar story arc at Penn State before leaving for the NFL. Both players were ultra-talented but never fully realized their potential before leaving for the pros. Now, Walker is the presumed starting left tackle for the Green Bay Packers. Does Penn State have the depth and talent to push its top players at the position to be their best selves? We discuss that history and how Olu Fashanu, Drew Shelton, Nolan Rucci and Anthony Donkoh fit into the picture. Ohio State and Michigan disruption - Does it change anything? Penn State's place in the Big Ten rankings may be in upheaval this coming year. Where will the team fall in the rankings with the influx of former Pac-12 schools? But it's not just Franklin and the Nittany Lions that experienced attrition this offseason. Ohio State just named a new offensive coordinator, in former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. Michigan has lost talent on and off the field after Jim Harbaugh took some of the staff to the LA Chargers. So, does any of that change Penn State's chances of finishing at the top of the conference? We discuss that and the team's chances of making the 12-team playoff if they finish fourth. BWI Mailbag As always, the last segment on our show is for you. Check out the message board each week for the Mailbag submission thread, or join live and ask your question in the chat. Men varför?

Are we reliving the 60s crisis of liberalism? Unfurl the complexities of this era and contrast it with today's political climate in our latest episode of VarmVlog. We glance back at the rise of the administrative state, and how it sparked political controversy, then cast an eye on the right wing response and its profound impact on the current crisis of liberalism. The 90s saw a fragmented left, a mishmash of personal interests and identarian politics - but what held them together without a collective narrative? We wade through the dynamics of the left movement and the challenges it faced, from the culture of narcissism to the fall of the Soviet Union. As we delve into this, we also discuss the attempts to control the Democratic Party and the emergence of Atari Democrats, offering a fresh perspective on the evolution of leftist politics. Fast forward to the present, the Republican Party is not what it once was. We explore how the party's evolution, the changing immigration policies of the 80s, and the fragmentation of Baby Boomer culture have shaped today's crisis of liberalism. As we conclude our journey through time, we shine a light on the contemporary debates within the left and the impacts of the revival of the People's Party. How do we deliberate before and beyond language, how do we create relations without words, how are our bodies determined by the spaces we are in? The 25th edition of The Art of Assembly takes place in the context of Michael Kliën's “Parliament”, a social choreography in which citizen-performers work in silence to hold council amidst the elemental phenomena and fundamental concerns of collectively lived experience. Political philosopher and literature theorist Michael Hardt together with Antonio Negri coined the term Multitude, describing a „multiplicity of singularities acting together“: a network that is neither homogeneous nor self-identical. Visual artist Pedro Lasch, director of the Social Practice Lab at Duke University, works with choreographies of festive gatherings, multiplatform social communication, and other artworks created through interaction. Literature scholar Corina Stan shows that relations are not only constructed by proximity but also by interpersonal distances that have shaped ethical thinking throughout modernity.

Penn State practice observations Penn State switched to a regular season order for the roster, separating the team into the D-Squad (developmental squad) and the regular roster. The team still has open competitions at several positions, including receiver and quarterback, for which Franklin declined to name starters on Wednesday evening. What observations did BWI glean at practice from the offense and defense? Join the show to find out. Between the Lines Whenever Franklin speaks, we listen and report what he says to say. But sometimes, what he says needs interpretation. This week on Between the Lines, Fitz and Bauer will discuss Franklin's comments on the starting quarterback competition, Dante Cepha's progress since joining the team, and the special team's battle for punter and kicker. Cephas was a major addition to the team in February of 2023 but has had a seemingly slow start to camp. What did Franklin say, and what did he mean when asked if Cephas is where he's like the receiver to be at this point? Franklin also addressed the special teams and quarterback competitions at camp during his comments on Wednesday. What did our experts glean from his comments and do they believe Franklin when it comes to the quarterback spot? BWI Mailbag Finally, the show turns the reigns over to you in the final segment. Check out the show at 10 am EST on YouTube and subscribe to Blue White Illustrated's YouTube Channel so you don't miss any breakdowns of training camp and the 2023 season. Penn State camp strikes the right mood Despite the weather, the environment for fans at Saturday night's practice was perfect. What did Penn State do to put on a good show for fans? Greg Pickel discusses what he liked about the setup and how he thinks fans should consider attending next year if the team decides to do another event like this. However, the weather was a significant factor on Saturday night, with driving rain that lasted most of the time the players were on the field. The show discusses how that impacted the event. It was also the first time that Pickel or anyone on the show had seen a full Penn State practice before. Pickel describes what the day was like and how structured head coach James Franklin's event was. He also makes a comment about what practice, outside of the scrimmage, is like for fans that didn't attend. Scrimmage takeaways Next, the BWI Live show recaps the players and units that stood out during the competition portion of practice. Penn State put on a show for fans, working with the first-team defense against the first-team offense. The defense dominated a large portion of the scrimmage, and Pickel breaks down which players stood out to him, including new transfer running back Trey Potts. But the defensive line was the night's story, with several players up front shutting down the Penn State offensive attack during the situational work. With veterans getting a rest after the first few drives, young defenders like King Mack, Tony Rojas, and others stepped up and made plenty of plays. Find out which other units and players were under the spotlight during the scrimmage. Penn State will open the doors of Lasch again this evening for players and coaches to speak with the media. Joseph Burgo is a psychoanalyst and author and a co-director of Genspect, an organization representing thousands of parents of children caught up in the ongoing transgender social contagion. The organizatioin now seeks to supplant the World Professional Association of Transgender Health as an authoritative source of guidance for how to deal with gender dysphoric youth. Burgo gave a talk at the Genspect: the Bigger Picture conference in April, held concurrently and in the same city as the annual gathering of the European branch of WPATH, titled Autogynephilia, and the Sexualization of Shame which I published at this Substack last month. We had a conversation presented here in podcast form, soon to be posted at the Year Zero YouTube channel, which I encourage everyone to follow, as I'll be posting videos there more regularly. As always, full transcripts of audio interviews are available to paid subscribers. Year Zero is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Some excerpts: Wesley YangLet's talk about the standard definition of what autogynephilia is. How did we come to know that this was a condition at all and what is it?Joseph BurgoIt's very simple, it's men's sexual arousal at the idea or image of themselves as a woman. They are what we used to think as fetishistic cross-dressers — men who dress up in women's clothes and get off on it sexually. We know this from Ray Blanchard, who came up with the two types of transsexuals, the homosexual transsexual and the autogynephilic transsexual. Mike Bailey wrote about it, and Anne Lawrence did an exhaustive study on autogynephilia. What I find really frustrating is that these histories are really accounts of a fetish. I think of what Anne Lawrence wrote as the account of a fetish. It's all about the fetish — the history of the fetish, when it appeared, how it affects their sex life and their relationships, with no sense that it means something. I mentioned in my paper that Anne Lawrence had collected all this data, and then deleted the lengthy family histories of these guys, as if it were peripheral to her study. I find it enormously frustrating. But I do think that's the way the mental health profession is these days. The idea that symptoms have meaning, that they might have an unconscious significance that can be sorted out; that it's a way of resolving internal conflict, or it represents some defensive compromise. People don't think that way anymore, I do feel kind of like a dinosaur these days.Wesley YangIn liberal enclaves like this, especially in ones that are surrounded by red hinterlands, they just accept the next new thing immediately. They don't question them. “Yeah, being born in the wrong body? That makes perfect sense to us.”Were you already in tension and crisis with peers and with the school administration as a result?Joseph BurgoWe didn't have much to do with the school administration. I was set back, and I didn't really know how to cope with this. I approached the people that I thought would help. I think I speak for parents all over America who are having exactly this experience: the mental health professionals will tell you that you need to affirm your child's identity, and you're a bigot. We consulted with the endocrinologist just to get an idea of what the reality was of these drugs. I said to her, just in passing, that it's kind of frustrating that I can't find anybody who's willing to look at the mental health aspects of this, what else might be going on. She looked at me with utter contempt, and said, “You're not going to find that.” Like, “What an outlandish idea that there's a meaning to these symptoms.” It was really humiliating and awful.Wesley YangIncredible. You're a credentialed medical professional within this field, a colleague, and you have standing within that community. The consensus had coalesced to the point where your reflexive belief that, “of course, no one is born in the wrong body,” had already made you a pariah.Joseph BurgoTotally. This has a chilling effect on the profession. A number of people at the conference talked about this, and I know lots of people who won't go anywhere near gender because it's just too fraught. Or they've jumped on the affirmative bandwagon and have built practices affirming children, which is unconscionable to me, but they do it.Wesley YangThere are many states that have bans, I guess North Carolina doesn't, on what they call conversion therapy. Meaning if you help a child be comfortable in their own body, you are converting them from this fleeting psychological sense that they might be a member of the opposite sex, which we're going to reify and entrench as if it's their true identity and any deviation from it is a crime.Joseph BurgoWhich is an absolutely insane position. It's actually the opposite of what's true. One of the things I'm very upset about is that a lot of these gender nonconforming kids who would grow up to be gay or lesbian are being converted to trans. That's the real conversion therapy. I used to sit on the board of directors and was an officer and friends with everybody at my LGBT center where I live. When I dove into this space, I gave them an article I'd written and I said, “Do you want me to step down?” These are my friends and they said, “Yes, please go away.” They'd all jumped on board with the trans thing. It's the LGBT Center but now everything is trans. This was my big question: what if they're gay and not trans. And I'm treated like, “Go away.”Wesley YangYou're still able to practice. They didn't cancel and destroy you, or they didn't try to, or they didn't succeed at it.Joseph BurgoThe fortunate thing is that I'm at a point in my career where I have enough money. I'm in private practice. They can't really cancel me. What are they going do to me?Joseph BurgoAnd it justifies any kind of violence on your behalf, coming from you. The book I want to write next is really an update of Lasch. He diagnosed America famously as suffering from a narcissistic disorder. I think what we've got now is a culture that suffers from borderline personality disorder. My most recent essay, Living In An As If World, looks at the way this kind of detachment from reality, this “as if” existence that we're living where you can just make it up as you go along, is leading to detachment from reality, but also, increasingly, borderline behavior where borderline rage, vicious assaults, attempts to destroy people, which is kind of what borderlines are like, is widespread. It dominates Twitter, for sure. Twitter is like nonstop borderline rage all the time. I do think there's a cultural pathology that's gotten much, much worse. Even though I say the tide has turned, I think, “Can we really pull out? Can we pull back when the society is this ill?” I don't know.Wesley YangWhat is borderline personality disorder and how do you see it manifesting in the culture?Joseph BurgoThe personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder, are characterized by an unstable sense of self that vacillates back and forth between feeling like you're superior and feeling like you're trash. It's unstable emotional states, frequent outbursts of rage, when you are challenged or when you aren't validated. These people are prone to various kinds of addictions. They have a hard time forming realistic and lasting relationships. They tend to blow up their friendships and family relationships. These features sound, to me, a lot like the way trans rights activists behave. They really are the embodiment of a cluster B personality disorder, particularly borderline personality disorder. If you take it just on the way people respond to one another in space, the way people will be enraged about nothing and take other people down. They will feel slighted and go off in an explosive way. I think social media really is characterized by borderline kinds of communication. This is a public episode. What happens when we explore the tension between Marxism and psychoanalysis through the lens of Phillip Reiff  and Christopher Lasch's work and its relation to Henry Miller and John Updike? Join us in this thought-provoking conversation with our guest Daniel Tutt, a renowned scholar of Marxism and psychoanalysis. We'll discuss the Frankfurt School, the cultural revolution of the 60s and 70s, and Lasch's unique perspective from Anglo-American Freudianism as a corrective to forms of Freudian Marxism considered infantile and out of touch with American dynamics.Discover the influence of Lacanian thought, its relation to right-wing Nietzscheanism, and the emergence of Pat Buchanan's book alongside the impact of the Trotsky-Tinya conservative pipeline. We'll analyze the work of notable thinkers such as Max Schattman, Tony Cliff, Paul Godfried,  MacIntyre, Rod Dreyer, and Elizabeth Brunig, and reflect on the lasting influence of McIntyre's work as well as the relevance of Virtue Ethics in today's intellectual landscape. We'll also dive into the roots of the sexual revolution in the 1950s, Ronald Reagan and Obama's reforms on local parenthesis laws, and how they are used as vectors of human capital. We'll examine the culture wars and their mutually constitutive nature, as well as the implications of modern intellectual life and the importance of giving due consideration to all perspectives. Don't miss this engaging and insightful conversation with Daniel Tutt, where we'll challenge your understanding of Marxism, psychoanalysis, and their intersections in our society. Penn State basketball introduced new head basketball coach Mike Rhoades last Thursday, but the fallout of former head coach Micah Shrewsberry isn't over. After public bickering over NIL spilled into the social media landscape, and since then, more formal means of communication, it's clear there is a battle going on inside Penn State.  The Athletic Department, led by new director Pat Kraft and the university are attempting to chart a productive course through the new name image and likeness frontier. But inside, political infighting is causing serious concerns for that future.  That is, according to an alumni-elected board of trustees member, Brandon Short.  Short sat down with Blue White Illustrated's Nate Bauer for an interview about the situation surrounding Shrewsberry's departure and warns of more trouble to come. Listen to the full interview wherever you get your podcasts, or on our YouTube channel. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated so you never miss special content.  "Losing Micah Was a wake-up call" Short didn't mince words speaking with Bauer.  "We lost Micah for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was a lack of support through NIL," Short said. This backs up the reporting that Bauer had conducted prior to Shrewsberry's decision. Short went on to say that the situation is a black eye for national perception. "It's a wake-up call for me. When he chose Notre Dame over Penn State, I felt heartbroken and embarrassed that a school could come and take our coach. We're Penn State. We're not a stepping-stone job. Penn State is a destination job, and I think we need to do everything that we can to make sure that that never happens again." More trouble coming for for Penn State For Short, the issues surround a dissenting minority of Board of Trustees members that he claims are undermining the athletic department.  "I can tell you that our current football coach has been here for nine years, and we have alumni-elected trustees who claim to be leading the NIL efforts who've never met with the head coach in the nine years that he's been here, much less discussed NIL initiatives." It's not just NIL, though this is the latest frontier the fight has come to. Short, who did not reference former Penn State coach Jay Paterno or trustee Anthony Lubrano by name, citing some specific events where this group of trustees tried to hold back progress. "For a lot of people that are upset about losing Micah Shrewsberry, or some of the things they see in athletics, we have three incumbent trustees who all voted against Lasch, all voted against supporting our football program at a time when they needed it." Short discusses pressing matters for the program and is concerned that the infighting will spill over, affecting football and, thus, the program's overall health. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lorentzen and host Daniel Tutt discuss Lasch's socialist politics, why he's so often misunderstood by the contemporary left and how he read literature. We assess the reasons why Lasch remains so popular and we touch on the politics of American novelists, the new Dimes Square scene in Manhattan, for which Christian is a central figure and personality, and we touch on the generational politics that seem to return and return ever since Lasch diagnosed them in the 1970s. Penn State football celebrated more than a year's hard work by securing the bulk of their Class of 2023. Today, the Blue White Illustrated Daily Edition recaps the day and looks forward to what is next for the Nittany Lions. Join Nate Bauer and Sean Fitz as they discuss all of that and what's going on in NIL right now.  Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss the show.  Penn State's most significant drama from signing day was with four-star safety Conrad Hussey. The Florida native took official visits to Miami and Florida State this fall and didn't sign with the Nittany Lions on signing day. However, he didn't sign anywhere else as of the recording. Fitz discusses the situation briefly before moving on.  Both Fitz and Bauer were at the signing day event held at the newly-renovated Lasch building complex on Wednesday. First, they give their impressions of the event before discussing the building itself. It was the first time that either reporter set foot in the newly renovated space, so they gave their impressions.  Bauer discusses the theme of Penn State head coach James Franklin's comments to the players during the morning before Fitz gave his thoughts on that matter.  Next, they discuss what Franklin had to say during his press conference in the afternoon. Fitz takes the opportunity to look ahead at what's next in the class heading into the traditional signing period and the transfer portal. He highlights the players that Penn State is targeting and which positions need to add more players, thanks to misses in the class.  Finally, Bauer discusses the NIL situation both locally and nationally. He finds several aspects of the NIL conversation, or lack of conversation, around Penn State interesting. He feels like he gained new insight into the Nittany Lion's NIL pitch from recruiting assistants and Franklin, which he shares on the show.  Learn more about your ad choices.  Since 2016 Christopher Lasch's books and reputation have both reemerged as relevant in an era when the left has been subsumed under the banner of the democratic party. Specifically, Lasch has been taken up as a figure who can refute the PMC approach to overcoming racism and woke politics, but he has mostly been taken up by the right or by the "post-left." In this interview, Elijah Emery and Douglas Lain discuss what Lasch has to offer socialists and the struggle for socialism.

Christopher Lasch, the late historian and social critic, can be difficult to pin down. Despite writing with startling clarity and verve, Lasch  frustrates his readers' longing for clean partisan taxonomies and explicit programmatic statements. Taken up in recent years by Steve Bannon and  post-liberal populists, he was, in life, a man of the left who never ceased interrogating his own side's pathologies and historical blindspots — often using Marxism, psychoanalysis, and a rich, idiosyncratic historiography of the American scene to do so. As George Scialabba once put it, “Virtually every political and cultural tendency in recent American history has smarted under Lasch's criticism."  And even his most devoted readers have been left asking — “plaintively or exasperatedly,” writes Scialabba — what exactly does Christopher Lasch want? For our guest, editor and writer Chris Lehmann, Lasch was more than an admired intellectual iconoclast and gadfly; he was a treasured teacher and mentor — who was nonetheless difficult to get to know well. In our conversation, Lehmann finds fault with tendentious readings of Lasch's work by his most ardent fans and virulent enemies alike. To unearth the powerful critique running through Lasch's oeuvre, we spend most of this episode discussing his late-career opus The True and Only Heaven. Along the way, Lasch's insights frustrate and illuminate in equal measure, inspiring new variations on classic KYE themes: the relationship between particularity and solidarity, tradition and hierarchy, egalitarianism and expertise, and religion and political virtue. Today Chris introduces the guys to Christopher Lasch and a chapter in his book, The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy. The chapter is, The Soul of Man Under Secularism. In the chapter Lasch riffs on Oscar Wilde's, The Soul of Man Under Socialism. Wilde believed that Socialism would free people from the responsibilities of property and manual labor so that they could pursue the development of “personality”. If that sounds self-indulgent and unrealistic, that's because it is. But that is remarkably similar to the way so many young people and tech gurus think in our time. The pugsters use Lasch and Wilde as a basis for reflection on the loony character of our time. Tune in and join the conversation!
