Reds Outfielder Scott Schebler answers Tim's 5 Big Questions
This week, I had the opportunity to interview Scott Schebler, Cincinnati Reds Outfielder. We talked about his journey into becoming a Professional Athlete and what it took to get to the point where he is now. Scott also spoke on how his relationship with his dad helped him become the athlete and person he is now. From being a multi-sport athlete in high school and ultimately pursuing baseball in college at D.M.A.C.C. to being drafted in the 26th round by the Dodgers. After spending 3 years in the minor leagues, Scott had a breakout year in 2013 which landed him a spot on a stacked 40 man roster with the dodgers. (Utley, Ethier, Kemp, Kershaw) He was traded in 2015 to the Cincinnati Reds. We talked about the trade and how it has been a great move for his career. He gave an honest grade of his performance so far in 2018. I hope he gets healthy and continues to stay hot at the plate in 2018 and in the future. Thanks to Scott for taking time out of his busy schedule to sit down and talk about his journey.

Finally, a discussion of whether Scott Schebler should be the everyday center fielder. Plus, there's a lot of other nonsense, the same stuff you have come to expect from Redleg Nation Radio. Hitting four home runs in one game certainly gets attention. But regardless, longtime Reds reporter John Fay says the Reds are better off with Scooter Gennett instead of Brandon Phillips. And the controversy over which of the two players wears No. 4 is ridiculous. Fay said wrote on Tuesday that the Reds never could have acquired Gennett if they had Phillips. Gennett can play multiple positions and come off the bench. Phillips would not have wanted to be a utility player. “For this year, Gennett's a more valuable player,” Fay said on The Fifth Mascot podcast. Outfielders Billy Hamilton and Scott Schebler were injured, and the Reds were able to plug Gennett in. “Last night was a ridiculous accomplishment,” Fay said. “Gennett has really brought something to the Reds that they sorely needed.” That all came on the heels of controversy over the weekend when Phillips – now with the Braves – returned to town and said it was a slap in the face that Gennett wears his number. “I thought what Phillips said was out of line,” Fay said. Gennett didn't choose the number 4. Meanwhile, the Reds had also given away Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto's numbers. Fay also said he didn't think the Reds should retire number 4. Fay said Phillips had a great career with the Reds, but the team has such history it should reserve retiring numbers for players who make the Baseball Hall of Fame, Fay said. “It's no slight against him, but I don't think he deserves to have his number retired,” Fay said.

The Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman talked Reds baseball with host Andy Furman on The Andy Furman Podcast. Brennaman and Furman talked about the Brandon Phillips trade, Jose Peraza, Dilson Herrera and more. Furman wondered how the Reds can say they are rebuilding while at the same time signing 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo. "There's a big time mutual admiration society that exists between Arroyo and this team," Brennaman said. "Bronson can be the kind of guy that can help a young pitching staff whether he's in the bullpen or the rotation." Furman asked Brennaman about Scott Schebler having the right field starting spot. Brennaman at first said the job was Schebler's, but then he brought up top outfield prospect Jesse Winker. "We've been talking about Jesse Winker since Abner Doubleday invented the game," Brennaman joked. "If there are questions in the outfield, you would have to apply them to both of the corner spots because Winker is waiting in the wings." So how many wins will the Reds have? You'll have to listen to the podcast to find out what the Hall of Famer predicts.
