Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes were joined by former MLB pitcher Bronson Arroyo to reminisce about playing for manager Terry Francona.
Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes opened their show by previewing the Cubs-Reds series this weekend and by reacting to the White Sox's latest roster moves. After that, former MLB pitcher Bronson Arroyo joined the show to reminisce about playing for manager Terry Francona.
Episode 51: Drew sits down with former MLB pitcher, Bronson Arroyo. Bronson won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2004, was a National League All-Star in 2006 and retired from baseball in 2017. This is a great conversation about baseball, music, and mindset.
Thursday's show featured a look at athletes who have also had careers in music and we also had an opportunity to play some of their recordings. The athletes we focused on were former Red Sox slugger, the late Tony Conigiaro along with former Red Sox righthander Bronson Arroyo, the "Original TB 12", Terry Bradshaw, former Cincinnati Bengals tackle Mike Reid and former Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams.

October 19, 2004 --The Yankees hold a 3-2 lead over the Red Sox in the ALCS with Game 6 to be played at Yankee Stadium. The starting pitchers were Curt Schilling of the Red Sox and Jon Lieber of the Yankees. Schilling pitched with a torn tendon sheath in his right ankle, which was sutured in place in an unprecedented procedure by Red Sox team doctors. The game was scoreless till the fourth inning when Sox second baseman Mark Bellhorn hit a shot into the leftfield stands. The ball struck a fan in the chest and dropped back onto the field, where Left field umpire Jim Joyce signaled that the ball was still in play. After a discussion with Sox Manager Terry Francona, the umpires huddled and overruled the call giving Bellhorn a three run homer and the Sox a 4-0 lead. Despite his injury, Shilling provided seven strong innings giving up only 1 run on a Bernie Williams homer before leaving the game completely exhausted and his sock soaked in blood. Bronson Arroyo would take over for Schilling in the eighth and give up a quick run on a Miguel Cairo double and a Derek Jeter single. With Alex Rodriguez up what followed was truly bizarre. ARod grounded a pitch back to Arroyo who scooped up the ball and ran down the first baseline to tag Rodriguez out, who slapped at Arroyo's arm and glove, knocking the ball loose. As the ball rolled down the baseline, ARod advanced to second and Jeter scored. The umpires huddled again and called Rodriguez out on interference and ordered Jeter back to first. Yankee Stadium erupted as fans rained debris onto the field prompting Francona to remove his players from the field for safety. The NYPD, in full riot gear, restored order and remained on the field for a full inning. Sox closer Keith Foulke would keep the Yanks off the board in the 9th and secure the game for Boston. The Red Sox, the 26th team in Major League Baseball playoff history to face a 3--0 series deficit, became the first to force a Game Seven.

For this episode, we're going back to Pearl Jam's first ever appearance at Fenway Park back in 2016. It's appropriate timing because they'll be playing two shows there to close out the tour in September. While it has all of the baseball references and former Red Sox player appearances, the overarching focal point of this episode will focus on the personal experience that Randy had during this show. Have you ever had a concert blunder that you wish you could take back? Did you ever miss a chunk of the set due to arriving late or other negligence? That's what we're going to talk about here as this show was the one and only time that Randy was not in his seat for the opening song. He'll take you through the whole story and hopefully absolve his demons by the end of the show. ***Please note that our audio for this episode is not up to snuff due to connectivity issues during the recording. It's listenable, but expect some glitches throughout*** Playing in one of MLB's legendary cathedrals, Ed would mention on multiple occasions at this show that playing Fenway was a dream come true. It was a night dedicated to celebrating the big moment, and there were plenty of special guests and special performances to back that up. We get our fair share of rarities at this show, including one of the ultra rare deep cuts in their catalog, Strangest Tribe. Back to back with Into The Wild song Society may consist of the rarest opening to an encore of all-time. We also get two massive covers that hadn't been seen at Pearl Jam shows going back a decade. Bob Dylan protest song, Masters Of War was a massive highlight that hadn't been played in 200 shows prior to this, and I've Got A Feeling brought you back to the early 90s and was played for the first time since 2004. Add in that former Red Sox pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, joined in to play Black and former first baseman Kevin Youkilis brought out a uke, it was jam packed with unforgettable moments. Our Gear Guru segments on this episode will have Javier talking about a delay effect coming from Mike on Masters Of War, and a little bit of Ed talk on guitar during Porch. The Pitching Command Show with guest Bronson Arroyo, Reds hall of fame pitcher and musician. With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. It's no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today. Bronson was drafted by the Pirates in the 3rd round in 1995 and made it the MLB in 2000 with the Pirates. He then pitched 16 years in the MLB playing with the Red Sox, Reds, and Diamondbacks. For the Red Sox AAA, He pitched the fourth nine-inning perfect game in the 121-year history of the International League in 2003 when he struck out nine, and went to a three-ball count only 3 times. He was a part of the 2004 World Series champions Red Sox, and was elected to the Reds hall of fame in 2023. A great discussion about training and measuring pitching control, command, sequencing and what it takes to pitch at higher levels of baseball. The 2004 World Champion discusses his band and the release of their new album.
So great to have Blöthar the Berserker back on Talkin' Rock. If you're in the southeast Michigan area you'll be able to meet and get a photo with him at Astronomicon on March 3rd and 4th. He tells me what's happening with the band, a lot of which he said he can't talk about yet. He did tell me that they guys are working on a very big project. Kind of an album/movie project that sounds interesting. We talk about horror movies and the streaming service Shudder. He tells me about working with Lzzy Hale on their song "The Cutter". "She's such a great singer and great musician." He went on "We consider her a sister to GWAR". I asked him about the future of GWAR. Is there an end date? Will other guys fill in? "GWAR is in it for the long haul" He talks about their new "products". "There's no end to how we'll prostitute ourselves." You can check out their site for more details on that. LOL Up next, it's former MLB pitcher, Bronson Arroyo. He has a new album out called Some Might Say. It's a very 90s based album, as he explained to me that he's just a prisoner to what he was influenced on. He put out an album of covers about 15 years ago, which he had Stephan King voice a part of it. We talked about that, as well as him asking Eddie Vedder for some tips. We did talk a litttle baseball, and rockers who are huge fans. I've never met him before, but rest assured, I'll see him next time he's in town. -Meltdown- https://gwar.net/ https://www.astronomicon.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=HC_Search_Display&gclid=CjwKCAiAl9efBhAkEiwA4ToripXhPBe_m-sQoJ5f5CVb04-MFPFPLflGPcz_duXbYl23fK4N971H-xoC_QcQAvD_BwE https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/track-x-track/

We talk about why Red Sox fans are so divided amongst themselves which is not something that usually happens with this fanbase, and how the Mookie trade was the beginning of "The Fog." Jared poses a hypothetical about if you'd rather have sustained success with less championships, or major up and down years with more championships. Despite everything that has happened this offseason, the dark cloud that was hanging over the 2022 Red Sox season is gone, and we look at ways to be optimistic about 2023. Jared played guitar with Bronson Arroyo this week and tells a story of meeting Julián Tavárez at his concert. We also break down the news of Youk returning to the NESN booth and discuss other names we'd like to see featured on the broadcast throughout the year. Enjoy! In light of the events from Monday Night Football this week, the guys start out on a somber tone as they discuss how the NFL lied to our faces after Damar Hamlin collapsed, as well as how ESPN handled the coverage of the incident. Mike questions if Paycor Stadium is cursed, with this being the third horrific incident to happen in the Jungle, allowing the guys the chance to transition back to the usual hijinks. The crew laughs at Thibodeaux doing snow angels after injuring Nick Foles, and Scott laughs even harder at the Raiders. The fellas shift to college football, and Mike wonders why the refs decided to screw Michigan while everyone can't get over OSU's shank. Cesar gloats about his Tulane pick all year, and the fellas rip Maryland's Mike Locksley for going with the oversized hat when getting the Mayo Bath. The guys shift to baseball, and rip the HOF voter to shreds for submitting a third straight blank ballot. Then Scott and Mike gush over Bronson Arroyo being on the ballot for the first time. Finally, the show wraps with the guys trying to figure out how the Carlos Correa thing is going to play out. Yes, the 2022 Cincinnati Reds were STUPID. How is it possible that we had so much fun this season? Chad and Nate were joined once again by The Podfather, Bill Lack, to discuss the World Series, the Reds Hall of Fame election (go Bronson Arroyo!), which players should be elected next, and which 2022 Reds we still remember.
