Send us a text#Pirates rookie 27 YO Matt Gorski hit a home run in his first #MLB at-bat this week! But maybe #Dbacks Eugenio Suarez outdid him by clubbing 4 home runs in a game versus the #Braves, that Arizona ended up losing! Are the #Giants & #Tigers built for the long haul? Is #Yankees Paul Goldschmidt really back in HOF form? We cover the big and little stories of the past week. Like the phantom triple play turned by the Nationals in their crazy win Friday vs. #Mets. AND, then there's checked swings. In the Arizona Fall League last year Mets Drew Gilbert was the first player to call for a check swing review using the technology that was tested. The criteria is that the swing cannot go past 45 degrees beyond the edge of home plate. It worked just fine and we hope that along with ABS, ACS (automatic check swing?) will become part of daily life in the majors. Getting the call right is what all fans want most! Hitting for homers in a game is so rare, it's only been done 18 times in MLB history! Let's reminisce on a truly awesome and unexpected display of power.
6-6-2023 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by questioning whether or not Kyrie Irving is a winning player and whether he is the appropriate player to build a team around. John then quiets any talk that either the Florida Panthers or Miami Heat are any type of Cinderella story. He then compares star MLB shortstops Francisco Lindor and Trea Turner, concluding that a rooting bias may be the reason one is preferered over the other- then laughing that both Mets and Phillies fans are generally so down on their own players that they may prefer the other. John opens the #SavingSportsHistory segment by recapping the tremendous baseball life of former MLB pitcher, pitching coach, and manager Roger Craig. Other #SSH topics include Bobby Mitchell, World War II, Steffi Graf, Louis Chevrolet, Charley Jones, Bjorn Born, Scooter Gennett, and Cam Neely.

Chad Dotson and Jason Linden kick off this week's podcast by discussing the Reds' 14th losing season in the last 17 years. On this week's Fifth Mascot, Scott Kyser and John Fay talked about the state of the Reds.Even as some starting pitching help starts to arrive, the Reds are continuing to struggle.Fay said the Reds should be patient with Homer Bailey as he eases back into things after missing so much time the last two and a half seasons, but the bigger concern is the Reds' bullpen. After all of the innings the bullpen has thrown early because of the awful starting pitching, the bullpen is struggling now.And Brandon Finnegan's injury really hurts this team.Fay and Kyser praised rookie starting pitcher Luis Castillo's debut, and Fay said the Reds should give young pitcher Tyler Mahle a shot at the starting rotation. The Reds need to figure out the future of the rotation because the starting rotation is in relative disarray, and the top prospects have not done well.Fay also talked to Scooter Gennett about his time with the Reds. Gennett said he wants to get better and perform so he can stay in Cincinnati.
John and Heather discuss the awful series against the Reds and the awesome series against the Phillies, Scooter Gennett's inexplicable excellence, Friday's roster moves, Carlos Martinez's ace status, and what to do about Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk.
On the heels of one of the most exciting weeks the Reds have enjoyed in recent years, Chad Dotson and Jason Linden had a lot to discuss on the most recent episode of Redleg Nation Radio. Scooter Gennett's 4-HR heroics were the highlight of the week, but a big sweep of the hated Cardinals propelled the Reds ever closer to first place. Are you not entertained? Hitting four home runs in one game certainly gets attention. But regardless, longtime Reds reporter John Fay says the Reds are better off with Scooter Gennett instead of Brandon Phillips. And the controversy over which of the two players wears No. 4 is ridiculous. Fay said wrote on Tuesday that the Reds never could have acquired Gennett if they had Phillips. Gennett can play multiple positions and come off the bench. Phillips would not have wanted to be a utility player. “For this year, Gennett's a more valuable player,” Fay said on The Fifth Mascot podcast. Outfielders Billy Hamilton and Scott Schebler were injured, and the Reds were able to plug Gennett in. “Last night was a ridiculous accomplishment,” Fay said. “Gennett has really brought something to the Reds that they sorely needed.” That all came on the heels of controversy over the weekend when Phillips – now with the Braves – returned to town and said it was a slap in the face that Gennett wears his number. “I thought what Phillips said was out of line,” Fay said. Gennett didn't choose the number 4. Meanwhile, the Reds had also given away Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto's numbers. Fay also said he didn't think the Reds should retire number 4. Fay said Phillips had a great career with the Reds, but the team has such history it should reserve retiring numbers for players who make the Baseball Hall of Fame, Fay said. “It's no slight against him, but I don't think he deserves to have his number retired,” Fay said.
For the first time, Redleg Nation and Red Reporter got together to discuss the latest news surrounding the Cincinnati Reds. Chad Dotson was joined by Red Reporter's BK to talk about the Reds' surprising roster decisions, including the addition of Scooter Gennett, and Rookie Davis/Amir Garrett making the Opening Day starting rotation. Also: should we be worried that Cody Reed and Robert Stephenson have been banished to the bullpen for now? Many thanks to our friends at Red Reporter. Music for this episode provided by Freekbass.
