PG writer Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason gave us a recap of the first period in the Penguins-Leafs game which started at 4 pm. The Pens trail 2-1 after 1. Are we already seeing a presence from the new ownership group? Is it likely the Penguins' best goalie is in the minors? The guys also wanted to get Jason's thoughts on the Pirates signing Ryan O'Hearn. Jason was adamant that the team is ‘not done' making offseason moves. Jason doesn't feel strongly that Andrew McCutchen will be back after some of these off-season acquisitions. Jason said Paul Skenes has to be feeling pretty good about what has happened so far and thinks a player like O'Hearn also takes some leadership lifting off Skenes' shoulders. Jason thinks Jared Triolo will stick around the Pirates lineup because of what he can provide on defense.

Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley recap Day 1 of the MLB winter meetings in Orlando, Fla. This show is presented by FanDuel. Which rumors related to the team are real? And which are fake? Particularly with regard to reports tying them to free agent power hitter Kyle Schwarber? Could GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly make a big move involving their pitching depth, which includes names like Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, Braxton Ashcraft, Mike Burrows and Bubba Chandler? What's the future with the organization for big names past, present and future including Andrew McCutchen, Konnor Griffin and Oneil Cruz? And what did the front office have to say about the trade involving Johan Oviedo and Jhostynxon Garcia? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Tonight on NS9LIVE, we're joined by Pirates beat writer Alex Stumpf to unpack the sudden wave of controversy surrounding Andrew McCutchen's future in Pittsburgh. Stumpf recently shared on Reddit that frustrations on both sides could make a 2026 reunion unlikely — only for Cutch himself to jump in on X and reply, “wow that's news to me.” We'll break down what this all means, whether fans should actually be worried, and how the Pirates might navigate this crossroads with a franchise icon. Plus, we're diving into the trade machine: ESPN's proposed Mitch Keller–for–Bryce Eldridge deal. Is it real? Is it fair? And would the Pirates ever consider moving their Opening Day ace for a top-20 prospect? Insight, reaction, and a little therapy — all happening live. This week, Chris Faga and Chris Stanley crack open the seedy underbelly of the internet (and maybe the world). From North Korean kidnappers and Chinese honey pot scams to the bizarre rise of “gooner culture” and furry conventions, the boys ask: is everything online just a psyop now? Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Jason Mackey and Colin Beazley continue their series of podcasts looking back on the 2025 season and forward at moves GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly could make to improve. Did Henry Davis become good enough defensively to overcome his offensive shortcomings? Should Joey Bart have a role on this team as a struggling defender? And where do Endy Rodriguez and Rafael Flores fit into the future at the position? The guys ponder those questions as well as the DH spot, where Andrew McCutchen's future looms large. Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Colin Beazley and Jason Mackey return for their first podcast of the MLB offseason talking arbitration decisions looming for GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly. How much are names like Oneil Cruz, Dennis Santana, Joey Bart, Johan Oviedo and Colin Holderman worth to this team? Could any of them, or others like Jack Suwinski, Justin Lawrence, Yohan Ramirez or Dauri Moreta be non-tender candidates? And how does the potential re-signing -- or lack thereof -- of Andrew McCutchen factor into the conversation? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Jameson Taillon is pitching against...Quinn Priester in the Cubs-Brewers game. Travis Williams said the Pirates have the best young pitching staffs in baseball. Should Andrew McCutchen be back as the Pirates DH? Joe and Bob both think the Pirates need to upgrade. Joe wants the Pirates to add key bats regardless of position. Jeff Patton of Baseball Card Castle, Starkey's Card of the Week.
Hour 1 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey:
Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys wanted Matt's reaction to the pitching matchup tonight in Milwaukee, which features 2 former Pirates – Jameson Taillon and Quinn Priester. Matt said you can compare those guys to other former Buccos that have found greener pastures elsewhere on the mound. The guys asked Matt about different philosophies in small markets that help those franchises make the playoffs. Matt doesn't see why the Pirates would part with Andrew McCutchen even though he's not the same player he once was.
10 years (and a day) since the Pirates were last in a playoff game – the 2015 Wild Card loss to the Cubs. Those teams from the three year stretch between 2013 and 2015 are remembered fondly – as they should be by some fans of a younger age. Should we subscribe more to the Paul Skenes mindset though? He wants to bring more than just a Wild Card win and a Divisional Series loss in 5 games to this city. The guys mentioned the double standard we have with the Steelers, who lose in the Wild Card round almost annually. There is no blaming of the fans because we should remember those teams well, but not THIS well, due to the ineptitude of the front office since then. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Mike talked about the Joe Flacco trade, sending the QB from Cleveland to Cincinnati and in line to start this weekend. Mike was surprised the Bengals didn't call the Giants about either of their veteran backups when things were going south with Jake Browning. Can Flacco succeed in Cincy with the talent they have at receiver? Mike said the Browns getting something back for Flacco was the reason they made the move. The Ravens also made a trade yesterday, moving one of their few healthy defenders to the Chargers. Mike is a bit surprised that Baltimore is still the favorite in the AFC North. Mike speculated that Lamar Jackson could miss more time than we originally thought.

The Pirates' 2025 season officially closed with a 4–1 loss to the Atlanta Braves, finishing the year at 71–91. In this final NS9 Postgame Show powered by Primanti Bros, Anthony DiNardo and Jim Rosati break down the game and reflect on a long, frustrating season. They highlight Johan Oviedo's outing—five innings, three hits, three walks, three strikeouts, and two earned runs, including a first-inning homer to Ronald Acuña Jr. Despite early command issues, Oviedo settled in and capped a solid late-season stretch with a 3.57 ERA over nine starts. The guys discuss his improved fastball metrics, steady arsenal, and why he's earned a rotation spot heading into 2026. Offensively, the Pirates again struggled. Even with early chances against retiring Braves starter Charlie Morton and a lone run from back-to-back doubles by Bryan Reynolds and Joey Bart, the bats couldn't deliver. Anthony and Jim also reminisce about Morton's career, his impact on Pittsburgh's playoff teams, and his memorable final matchup with Andrew McCutchen. It's a fitting microcosm of the year: solid starting pitching, quiet offense. Watch as the crew recaps the finale and shares hopes for needed offseason changes and a brighter 2026.

Paul Skenes didn't hold back, telling teammates it's time to “look in the mirror” and make the sacrifices needed to win. On this Bucco Brew, we break down Skenes' challenge and what it means for the Pirates' clubhouse. We also debate whether Andrew McCutchen just took his final at-bat at PNC Park—and if the Pirates should bring the franchise legend back next season. Plus, GM Ben Cherington says he's operating as if he'll return in 2026 and highlighted an improved farm system he plans to leverage for trades. Finally, we compare Pittsburgh's managerial choices of Derek Shelton and Don Kelly to the Reds' bold move to hire Terry Francona, and why the two clubs—once projected as equals—are now worlds apart. ☕ Powered by De Fer Coffee & Tea

Mitch Keller had the Nats on lockdown—five scoreless through 5 on just 62 pitches—before he was lifted and the bullpen let it slip, turning a 3–0 lead into a 6–5 loss. Doug and DiNardo break down the decision to pull Keller, the ensuing relief carousel (and why “just get outs” wasn't the plan), and a bizarre base-running gaffe at the plate that erased the tying run. We hit the late push too: Nick Yorke's pinch-hit AB, Joey Bart's RBI knock for Henry Davis, and how a passed ball + non-competitive pitch compounded the damage. Offensively, there were real positives—Jared Triolo (2 hits), Spencer Horowitz (2 hits with a homer), Nick Gonzales (2-for-4), Bryan Reynolds RBI—while Andrew McCutchen's 0-for-4 and apparent back issue are something to monitor. Plus: what this says about Don Kelly's in-game leash, the bullpen's volatility (Sisk/Nicolas, etc.), and the bigger roster-building conversation. On his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: How should the front office manage the Oneil Cruz situation heading into next season, with major questions looming over his ability to become a true MLB star? Is GM Ben Cherington's job secure if this team is able to finish close to the .500 mark under manager Don Kelly? Was moving Bubba Chandler into the starting rotation next to Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller a wise idea? How much should Braxton Ashcraft's workload be managed moving forward? And if the Pirates can only keep one of Andrew McCutchen or Tommy Pham for 2026, which one should they choose?

North Shore Nine Postgame Show Powered by Primanti Brothers The Pittsburgh Pirates stayed hot with a 3–0 shutout win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park! Tyler and Neil break it all down on the North Shore Nine Postgame Show powered by Primanti Bros. We dive into Braxton Ashcraft's outing, why his stuff is so electric, and how he's pushing his way into next year's rotation conversation. The guys also highlight strong work from Mike Burrows, Evan Sisk, Isaac Mattson, and closer Santana in locking down the shutout. At the plate, Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen both went deep, showing the impact of power bats in the lineup. The crew also debates Joey Bart vs. Henry Davis behind the plate, praises Oscar Marin's work with young pitchers, and looks ahead to the next matchup featuring Paul Skenes vs. Blake Snell.
PG columnist Jason Mackey joined the show. Jason admitted he is wavering on his Ben Cherington claim that he would be gone at season's end, but he does believe the Pirates will still move on from their GM. Should the Pirates re-sign Andrew McCutchen? There is a good argument to bring back Tommy Pham, who has ended up being a pretty good offseason signing. Jason still has hopes Bob Nutting will look at the whole body of work and not just how the team played in the final month. Jason shared that Cherington is under contract through ‘at least' next season. Jason thinks Cherington stays if the Pirates finish this final month strong.
The Pirates hammered the Red Sox, 10–3, at Fenway—Pittsburgh's second straight win in Boston to clinch the series. The 10 runs tied the most the Red Sox have allowed at Fenway this season. Pittsburgh trailed, took the lead, gave it back, then rallied again, scoring in multiple innings. Team totals: 12 hits, 7 walks, 9 strikeouts; every Pirate recorded a hit, and five players had an RBI. On the mound, Johan Oviedo worked 5.0 innings (3 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 2 ER). The bullpen held it down afterward. We noted managing workloads down the stretch—as we saw Mike Burrows pitch 2 in relief today, while Braxton Ashcraft remains in the rotation and Bubba Chandler could be an option. At the plate, Oneil Cruz homered for the 19th time this seaosn.. Multi-hit nights included Andrew McCutchen (10 hits in his last 8 games) and Nick Gonzales, and Spencer Horwitz. Jared Triolo reached four times via hit, walk, HBP, and error. Series finale is tomorrow, with a chance to sweep. NS9 Postgame Show is Powered by Primanti Bros. The Pirates rallied late in Boston to beat the Red Sox 4–2, spoiling rookie Payton Tolle's debut. Neil and DiNardo break down the marquee matchup of Paul Skenes vs. Tolle: Skenes didn't have his very best but stayed icy—6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 6 K on 95 pitches—working through some shaky defense (rough night for IKF, and a drop in CF) and a Roman Anthony homer. Andrew McCutchen carried the offense (3-for-3, BB, two doubles) with the go-ahead two-run double, while Nick Gonzales chipped in two hits. They also dive into Henry Davis' night (tough at-bats but stellar behind the plate, nabbed a runner), and a lights-out bullpen trio: Dauri Moreta's nine-pitch seventh, Isaac Mattson continuing his breakout (now down to a 1.95 ERA), and Dennis “Mr. Efficient” Santana striking out two to close (ERA down around 2.33). Andrew McCutchen isn't holding back. In his recent sit-down at Wrigley with Jose Negron of DKPS, Cutch admitted he doesn't want to “waste a roster spot” and made it clear that the Pirates have to pay to win if they want to take advantage of their pitching window. We dive into what that means for his future in Pittsburgh, how his Milwaukee stint shaped his outlook, and whether 2026 will be his 18th big-league season. Then we shift to Tommy Pham's comments from last night, where he stressed the need for a team-wide offensive philosophy and even pointed to Jared Triolo as someone starting to buy in. Is this really an organizational approach, or just veteran leadership trying to push change from inside the clubhouse? Finally, we zoom out: Are the Pirates actually “close,” like Pham believes, or does Cutch have it right that ownership must finally spend to avoid wasting an elite pitching staff led by Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller? ⚾️ Subscribe for more Pirates talk and North Shore Nine content! Host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey to react to the Pirates' disastrous series sweep at the hands of the Brewers in Milwaukee. Why is this team still struggling so much, even after GM Ben Cherington decided to keep productive veterans like Tommy Pham and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on expiring contracts? How did manager Don Kelly's club fall so far behind its small-market peer, led by GM Matt Arnold? Can Bob Nutting or anyone else really complain about MLB economics when the Brewers are thriving like they are? And how much longer can Cherington hold onto his job?
