North Shore Nine Postgame Show Powered by Primanti Brother's. The Pirates dropped another lifeless one in Philly as Zack Wheeler diced up the lineup for 7 shutout innings. Bryan Reynolds broke up the shutout with a 9th-inning homer, but it was far too little, far too late. Oneil Cruz and Andrew McCutchen combined to go 0-for-7 with 6 strikeouts, and Carmen Mlodzinski once again failed to pitch deep into a game. The offense has now scored fewer than five runs in 22 straight games, and fans are running out of ways to describe just how bad it's gotten. Tyler and Ryan break it all down—Cruz's concerning at-bats, Horwitz's return (and quick hook), the endless carousel at first base, and why it's time to shut down the Mlodzinski starting experiment for good. Pirates legend Jim Leyland joined the show. Jim said it is always a sad day when a manager gets let go and feels for Derek Shelton being the man out of a job. That being said, he's thrilled for Don Kelly, one of his pupils, getting a big opportunity. Jim's advice to Kelly was to be himself and let the players do their jobs too. Jim hopes that Don can ease some tension in the clubhouse and said you always have to earn it at this level. Jim said you have to do everything you can for the players and if they don't perform, it's time to take them to task. Jim wants to see the Pirates get a little bit creative offensively to cause a spark. The guys asked Jim about consistency in the lineup and how it can impact the usual players. Jim talked about Don's playing experience and how playing every single position will help him with the team. Jim said you can plan for a lot of things in a game, but you can't script it. Jim doesn't believe in the analytics department much and said a lot of his success came more from instinct, watching the game, and working with is assistant coaches. Jim expressed the importance of not overloading the players with too much information and just letting them play the game. Other advice from Jim to Don was to hire an experienced bench coach. The Jim Leyland chat got us talking about cigs. We also heard the words of Andrew McCutchen following the firing of Derek Shelton. The conversation starts with a rundown of the last six years of the Ben Cherington and Derek Shelton era, with some surprise that a season with moderately expectations — internally, at least — has gone the way it has. Is it time for a managerial change or in the front office? Then Noah describes what he saw on his trip to St. Louis and how bad the vibes have gotten in the Pirates clubhouse. What went wrong during the sweep? Is Paul Skenes pitching well enough? What can Pirates bats like Andrew McCutchen, Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds do so the team stops squandering quality starts from pitchers like Skenes and Mitch Keller. Colin and Noah finish by looking ahead at this weekend's three-game set against the Braves and pondering what a successful series looks like.

Assuming they take names like Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, Walter Nolen, Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart early, where should they look next? Is it cornerback and options including Shavon Revel Jr., Azareye'h Thomas or Trey Amos? What about running backs like TreVeyon Henderson, Dylan Sampson or Bhayshul Tuten? Or even receiver and players including Jayden Higgins, Jack Bech or Tre Harris? Paul tackles those questions, then previews an important series for the Pirates against the Los Angeles Angels, in which Oneil Cruz, Andrew McCutchen and the offense hope to get on track.

Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles previews the team's three-game series on the road against the Los Angeles Angels this week. With the team in a slide, will Derek Shelton seek to find more consistency with the lineups he puts out, eschewing the strategy of off days we've seen for players like Oneil Cruz and Andrew McCutchen already this season? What can we expect from the Pirates' probable starters in this series — Bailey Falter, Andrew Heaney and Carmen Mlodzinski? Is this Mlodzinski's last chance to prove he can be a viable option as a starting pitcher? With the Angels likely to start former Pirate Tyler Anderson and former Pirates farmhand Jose Soriano this series, what does it say about the current state of the organization in Pittsburgh? Noah gives his scouting report of the Angels, who so far this season have showed power at the plate thanks to names like Mike Trout, Logan O'Hoppe, Kyren Paris and Taylor Ward but have struggled out of the bullpen. Noah answers those questions and more.

How much hope should fans have in underlying statistic that suggest an offensive turnaround should be coming at some point? Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. What should we make of reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Steelers are looking to trade back in the first round of the NFL draft? Would that be the right move for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin to try to recoup some draft capital? And could they still land speculated targets including Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, Walter Nolen, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart of Omarion Hampton in the latter portions of the first round? Later, Paul gives his thoughts on the latest in the wait for Aaron Rodgers to sign with the team. Will he be under contract by the draft? And if not, how long after it should the Steelers wait before moving on with Mason Rduolph? Paul tackles those football topics, then weighs in on the Pirates' rough weekend, during which they were swept by the Cleveland Guardians. How much heat does manager Derek Shelton deserve for questionable lineup choices with Oneil Cruz, Andrew McCutchen and others? And can they turn their struggles around on the West Coast this week?

The Nats were dealt a curve ball Thursday morning when they learned shortly before the matinee that Davey Martinez was immediately suspended for one game as a result of Jorge Lopez throwing inside on Andrew McCutchen on Wednesday night (Lopez appealed his three game suspension). Mark (Live from Pittsburgh) & Al discuss how curious of a decision MLB made in opting to suspend Davey. All of this began with Paul DeJong getting hit in the face on Tuesday night, which resulted in him landing on the IL with a fractured nose. (14:00) The offense was quite anemic in 1-0 loss on Thursday afternoon. Nathaniel Lowe was the only member of the lineup to have multiple hits. Washington only scored four total runs in the final three game of this series in Pittsburgh. (17:30) Trevor Williams' best outing of the season was wasted as he only allowed one run in his five innings of work. The bullpen for only the 3rd time this season was not charged with a run. Lucas Sims had an encouraging appearance as he tossed a scoreless bottom of the 6th. (23:40) The final leg of the road trip moves to Colorado for a three game series. The weather forecast calls for potentially three inches of snow in Denver on Friday, so a doubleheader this weekend is possible. (26:00) Terry Byrom, Voice of the Harrisburg Senators, provides an update on the Nats AA affiliate.
