Pool CEO Shiv Malik - a technologist, award-nominated broadcaster, author of two books, former Guardian investigative journalist, and co-founder of the Intergenerational Foundation think tank joins me on Tech Talks Daily. UK-based Pool, currently valued at $39m, is building a data marketplace and associated payment rails for new data-sharing entities called data unions. These new data-sharing organisations seek to leverage shifts in privacy, the end of consumer data following Chrome's deletion of third-party cookies, and new EU rules for data portability which are due to come into effect next year. The most powerful companies on Earth are those who monopolise vast swaths of humanity's information. Pool's purpose is to redistribute the control and value of that knowledge and thereby completely reconstitute power relationships in the political economy of the 21st century. I learn how Pool is doing this by taking an old-fashioned organisational structure - the trust - and evolving it with Web3 technology to make it fit for the digital era. This straightforward model allows Data Unions to align incentives around data creation. It's why the model is backed not just by EU regulators through the upcoming Data Governance Act.

My guest today is Shiv Malik, CEO, and Co-Founder of the Pool Foundation. The Pool Foundation is the company behind Pool Data, a platform and associated services to support Data Unions to develop, scale, and monetize. They have studied existing Data Union frameworks in the Web3 space, seeking to simplify the complex technology required to scale. The pool is not only generating products and a technology offering for Data Unions but also the fabric by which the entities are connected to aggregate data and data buyers. To do this, the ecosystem must become more mature by enabling new Data Union companies and integrating existing businesses into the Data Union model of governance and payment. They aim to accelerate this process by creating the materials, education, and mentorship necessary to establish Data Unions, grow their user bases, and sell their data through our real-time marketplace. Shiv Malik is a technologist, award-nominated broadcaster, author of two books, former Guardian investigative journalist, and co-founder of the Intergenerational Foundation think tank. He joined the Web3 space in mid-2017 as an adviser to the Golem project and subsequently as Head of Growth for Streamr and co-creator of their Data Unions framework. In 2021 he co-founded Pool and currently leads the organization on its mission to bring Data Unions to the world and ensure that people have control of their data and a genuine stake in the digital economy. We discuss various topics in our conversation, including the importance of Data, Data-opolies, Data Unions, Data Emancipation, and much more. We begin our discussion by discussing Shiv's background before joining the Web3 space. Shiv shares how he was an investigative journalist and war correspondent. Shiv explains how his experiences helped prepare him for founding a startup. We transition our conversation to discuss why Data emancipation is essential. We discuss how the current surveillance capitalist model works and how tech companies can profit from our data. We define the term data-opolies and how Web3 offers an alternative system to the status quo. Shiv explains why he is so passionate about Data and Data Emancipation. We transition our conversation to discuss Pool and Data Unions. Shiv explains how Pool is building the infrastructure for Data Unions. We discuss in detail what data unions are and why they are essential in the quest to disrupt these Data-opolies. We transition to discuss advertising. Shiv explains how Data is used in advertising and how things need to change because of public sentiments toward data collection and government and corporate regulation. We discuss how Data Unions can help power the next revolution in marketing and advertising. Our final topic centered around the Intergenerational Foundation think tank. We discuss how we can reimagine the future and the importance of optimizing for time preference. Please enjoy my conversation with Shiv Malik. -- This podcast is powered by Blockworks. Shiv Malik is the CEO of Pool, a data platform and marketplace that wants to increase data privacy and enable individuals to monetize their own data. Why you should listen Pool's purpose is to redistribute power, value, and control in the data economy. Pool's platform supports organizations that enable ordinary people to monetize and share their data. These are called Data Unions. And because those people are positively engaged in sharing their information, data products on Pool's platform are richer, more relevant, and easier to license. It's data working for everyone. UK-based Pool, currently valued at $39m, is building a data marketplace and associated payment rails for new data-sharing entities called data unions. These new data-sharing organizations are themselves seeking to leverage shifts in privacy, the end of consumer data following Chrome's deletion of third-party cookies, and new EU rules for data portability which are due to come into effect next year. For at least two decades now police forces have been using crime data tech to analyse crime patterns and therefore reduce crime rates, but they have not been able to predict who may have carried out a crime. Now the Sheriff’s office in Pasco County, Florida is using what it calls ‘intelligence led policing’ to do just that. Could AI algorithms really identify offenders? Not according to Kathleen McGrory, Deputy Investigations Editor at the Tampa Bay Times who has been researching this mysterious tech that the local law enforcement agency has been using. Similar schemes have been scrapped in LA and Chicago but continue in Pasco County. We asked for an interview with the Pasco County Police Sheriff and one of the engineers behind the tech – but did not receive a response. The rise of the Honjok lifestyle in South Korea Honjok is the term used by those Koreans who decide to live, eat, drink, and undergo most activities on their own, and are happy when they are alone with themselves. This movement started in the first half of the 2010’s and has been growing in parallel with South Korea's rate of smartphone ownership and the emergence of on-demand shopping and social media. It would seem that tech adoption is one of the main factors that helped elevate Honjok into a national movement. Reporter Silvia Lazzaris has been delving into the online world of Honjok. Could data unions give you some control and gain from your personal data? Would you like to make money from your Google search history? A new platform to democratize our data by tech start up Streamr will allow individuals to take control of their personal data and even gain financially from it. Until now, most of the data we generate browsing the web and using smart devices is controlled by a few giant corporations. It’s also sold without us receiving any share of its value. The Streamr platform enables developers to create their own data unions (such as Swash, which has a growing user base, and allows people to earn money as they browse) to decentralize control of data away from big tech and back to the individual. These data unions can also significantly improve the quality and security of data sets. Shiv Malik, Head of Growth at Streamr, is on the programme to explain how data unions work.
