Today our hosts are joined by Phill Drobnick, head coach of the Olympic curling team, for some hot takes about the sport that inspired Sarah’s new campaign newsletter The Sweep. Listeners who are unfamiliar with this sport, which gets even passing national coverage only during Winter Olympics years, might be wondering about curling’s origins. “It started in Scotland, like every goofy sport that involves beer,” explains Drobnick on today’s episode. The sport then took off in Canada and then around the world. When people watch curling during the Olympics, they become armchair referees who don’t realize how much strategy is at play behind the scenes. How similar is curling to golf and hockey? Do sweepers make or break the game? Is there a culture of collegiality or trash talk in the professional curling universe? Coach Drobnick has got answers. Tune in to today’s show to hear Sarah and David also discuss the partisan skew in absentee voting, the increasing likelihood of another Bush v. Gore-style debacle over mail-in voting, and the RNC’s nonexistent platform moving into this week’s convention. Show Notes: -Sarah’s campaign piece about curling and The Sweep. -“The Grand Old Meltdown” by Tim Alberta in Politico.

People who watch and comment on politics do so very differently than campaign operatives do. Campaigns use voter scores and voter modeling—which is essentially “Moneyball” for politics—to gauge which voters are worth spending money on. As Sarah explains: “It’s a quadrant: on the y axis you have who you’re going to vote for, and on the x axis, you have your likelihood to vote. So you may be the most Trump-y Trump person ever.” But here’s the kicker: “If I go and look back and you haven’t voted since Jimmy Carter, your propensity to vote is so low, that how much money we’re going to spend on reaching you as a voter is going to actually be pretty low.” Be sure to listen to this episode so our podcast hosts can get more into the weeds about how those voter scores are being used behind the scenes in future episodes. The country is still mourning the death of Breonna Taylor, an African American woman who was shot and killed by police officers in her Kentucky home during a no-knock raid in March. For years, no-knock warrants have withstood the test of time, given their alleged capacity to protect police and preserve evidence. But as David says, “there’s evidence that no-knock warrants are constitutionally deficient,” and “as a practical matter, castle doctrine and no-knock warrants are incompatible.” Sarah, on the other hand, doesn’t believe the castle doctrine should apply to police. Are no knock raids worth preserving? Why are they so broadly granted to police officers? Sarah and David have answers. Catch up on the latest episode for an update on the Michael Flynn case, subpoenas for Trump’s financial records, and the Hatch Act. Our esteemed podcast host Sarah Isgur launched her new Dispatch newsletter called “The Sweep” today, in which she broke down the effectiveness of the new presidential campaigns ads. Conclusion? Biden’s new ads are strategically boring to offset his opponent’s predictable unpredictability, whereas Trump’s play up the anarchy of the radical left. As Sarah reminds us, persuasion ads don’t work. This leaves candidates with two options: 1) Run up their existing base in enthusiasm and support, or 2) Get their opponent’s base not to vote. Justice Roberts trended on Twitter Friday night after joining the four liberal justices in denying a Nevada church’s application for injunctive relief over coronavirus restrictions. Religious liberty lovers sounded the alarm for First Amendment violations. But our podcast hosts are less concerned about this case’s long-term effect on religious liberty case law, given the state’s interest in restricting mass gatherings will soon be subverted to transcendent religious liberty concerns once the pandemic subsides. As David says, “The real enemy is not Justice Roberts, the real enemy is the coronavirus.” Speaking of Supreme Court drama, Josh Hawley told the Washington Post on Sunday that he won’t support any SCOTUS nominee who does not explicitly acknowledge that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided: on the record, and before they are nominated. Was this ridiculous fanfare to fuel his base? Our hosts have some thoughts. Sarah and David wrap up the podcast with some revisionist history on a Merrick Garland Supreme Court tenure and some parental advice on how to teach your kids risk tolerance and moral courage. Show Notes: -Sarah’s pilot newsletter, The Sweep: “T-Minus 99 Days and Counting …” and Thursday’s French Press, “Dump Trump, but Don’t Burn Down the GOP.” -Friday’s Supreme Court dissents on Nevada church case. -“Sen. Hawley lays down new antiabortion marker for Supreme Court nominees,” Josh Hawley’s recent speech on the failures of the conservative legal movement, and Adrian Vermeule’s case for common-good constitutionalism in the Atlantic. -Supreme Court opinions: NIFLA v. Becerra, Bostock v. Clayton County, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission , Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey Berru, June Medical Services, United States v. It’s February and it’s winter and it’s grey and dark and we’re all just looking for some books that are quick, dirty and delicious. Or, at least, Sarah & Jen are. If you are, too, this is the week for you!We love having you with us! — subscribe on your favorite podcasting platform and like/review the podcast if you’re so inclined!Next week, we’re reading the Queen of Dirty Talk! Sarah and Jen both love Tessa Bailey — so we’ll be talking about our two favorites of her books, Asking for Trouble (Sarah’s) and Protecting What’s His (Jen’s). Find them at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo.Show Notes- Sarah had boozy brunch with the RITA Writer’s Room—Nisha Sharma, LaQuette, Adriana Herrera, Andie Christopher, Alexis Daria, and Joanna Shupe (Sierra Simone & Tracey Livesay weren't there). You should maybe check out this awesome video of them in all their slow motion glory.- Jen didn’t know what ASMR is either.- Valentine’s Day is Go Week for Sarah. Jen wrote about Galentine’s Day for Kirkus. But one thing we can all agree on: Anna Karenina isn’t a fucking romance. Getting hit by a train does not qualify!- The 2 for 1 rule: in a male/female romance, she comes twice for every time he comes.- If you’re in Chicago, you can see Fated Mates Live at Spring Fling, and at KissCon, it’ll be a podcast ménage special with us, the Wicked Wallflowers, and Heaving Bosoms podcast.- What will Craven Day 2021 bring? Stay tuned.- Sarah’s friend Rachel Hawkins told Sarah to read A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane, which is a pen name for Meljean Brook, author of The Iron Duke. Is there danger banging? Yes. Is there vengeance banging? Also yes.- Jen read and loved White Out by Adriana Anders, which is a romantic suspense novel that takes place in Antarctica. It’s cold, but they still manage to danger bang.- Speaking of Danger Banging, Jen’s favorite is in the first of the Kinky Bank Robbers series by Annika Martin. It's honestly more like heat-stroke banging.- Jen and Sarah don’t think a quick and dirty read has to be InstaLust, but it does have to get right to the inciting incident.- Sarah recommends London Hale (a pen name for authors Ellis Lee and Brighton Walsh) as a reliable quick and dirty read. Start with The DILF (if you're ok with taboo) or Talk Dirty To Me (if you'd prefer something a bit further left on the Simone Scale).- Adopt don’t shop when it comes to real pet stores.- Breastfeed if you can and if you want to, but if you can’t that’s fine, too. Even if you live in Fucking Berkeley. Or the Berkeley of Brooklyn.- Some other of our favorite quick and dirty reads that are mostly in space: Grace Goodwin’s Interstellar Brides and Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians. But if you’re reading the Ice Planet Barbarians, please listen to our friend Dani’s Ice Planet Pod. It’s great.- More space romances: Laurann Donner’s New Species series, or Cavas, the one that appeared recently on the USA Today Bestseller list (not the New York Times, Jen misspoke) is one from the Vorge Series. Cynthia Sax has a whole cyborg series. Jen also really liked The Grabbed series by Lolita Lopez.- What we're trying to say is that these books are the romance equivalent of The Fast and the Furious series--which is the pinnacle of Jen's favorite movie genre, "Handsome men blow things up." - Finally, check out Brill Harper’s alphamallow series. But Jen’s favorite was Altogether, which is very, very hot. Yum. This Mr. Plow is not quite as hot; unless your name is Marge, of course.- Buy buttons and stickers from Kelly and t-shirts and totes from Jordandene.

Sarah Shahi is beautiful.  But despite having graced the covers of countless magazines, it would be wrong to call that her defining quality.  To sit down with her is to discover that she has humor, strength and grit that exceeds the average person.  Perhaps her steel was forged in the fires of growing up one of the few Iranian immigrants in Texas, or maybe it was from surviving an abusive father who, addicted to drugs, held a gun to her head at the tender age of 6.  Either way, this former Pageant Champion turned Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader had enough life force, and the help of an incredibly fierce mother and multiple women's shelters, to find a way out of Texas and onto our television and film screens since 2001.  From regular roles on Showtime's The L Word, NBC's Life, USA'S Fairly Legal and CBS' Person of Interest, to her brief but memorable performance opposite James Gandolfini in an Award-Winning episode of The Sopranos, she continues to turn heads.  Her portrayal of Rachel Benham on last summer's gritty Boston crime drama, City on a Hill, further solidifies her reputation as an actor with chops.  Here, she talks to me about everything from growing up as an outsider and using her pain for her art to how she manages to parent and stay connected to her kids despite an incredibly busy schedule that sometimes has her across the country from her loved ones for long stretches of time.   SHOW NOTES: Sarah's two burning desires as a kid:  being on stage or being a doctor, (3:20). Growing up Persian in Texas, (5:13). How doing pageants starting at age 10 proved to be a great training ground for an adult life as an actor, (6:37).  Playing a lot of sports as a kid and being a Tom Boy despite the fact that she was doing pageants, (8:43). How sports and doing pageants prepared Sarah for her eventual career, (10:07). Sarah's parents' volatile relationship and how they fled from Iran in the middle of the night, (11:24).  Sarah's father's darkness and perpetual addiction, (12:17). When Sarah's father held a gun to her head, wanting to kill her, himself and Sarah's Mom, (12:56).  Sarah's Mom as a Superwoman and Sarah's biggest inspiration, (14:36).  After Sarah's Dad left for a year, how her relationship with him morphed over the years, including a big break and him re-appearing in her 20's to demand money, (15:21).  Hating her father but then feeling like her dark side that she uses in her work is owed to him, (17:25).  "My mother and I, we spent about a year, on and off in the women's shelters until the time that I was about 5 or 6", (19:07).  Mom's thick accent caused people to try to take advantage of her, but if they did the claws came out, (21:45).  The trials and tribulations of growing up in Texas with the name Aahoo Jahansouz Shahi and how she landed on Sarah Shahi as her new name, (22:53).  Studying opera for 6 years, (24:14).  "My Mom always told me that if I wanted more I had to give to myself, she couldn't do it for me", (25:07).  Being the captain of her HS volleyball team despite being "fun size", (25:42).  Hated cheerleaders because they were popular and she wasn't but somehow, only 2 years after graduating HS, she graced the cover of the 99/2000 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Swimsuit Calendar, (26:49).  A crazy scheme to get to Hollywood that involved trying out for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders first, (29:20).  How Robert Altman changed the trajectory of Sarah's career and life, (30:29).  "I quit everything: I quit the cheerleaders.  I quit school. I had a cherry red pickup truck and, yeah, I packed up my car and my Mom and I drove to California.  And then I never looked back", (32:29).  No Plan B, (33:23).  Hysterial first audition story, (34:11).  Kevin Hart, (36:58).   When asked if Old School moved the needle for her career, explains that she always feels like she's at the beginning and the hustle never ends, (38:06).  One episode of The Sopranos that had a greater effect on Sarah's career than years of other TV, (40:24).  The nature of being an actor and knowing that most of our work will go unnoticed by the majority, (42:05).  Looking at an audition as an opportunity to exercise her unique take on the material and do it differently than anyone else, (44:25). Acting is like Jazz:  it takes place between the lines, (45:13).  Doing City on a Hill was a big departure for Sarah, away from Network TV, (47:00).  Taking risks in our work still does not guarantee us rewards in our hoped-for timeframe, (49:31).  A longtime marriage in the entertainment world, (50:30).  Go with your heart, (51:22).  Parenting - trying to be an actor and a soccer Mom, (52:09).  Shonda Rhimes' book, The Year of Yes, (56:04).  Being there for your kids even when you're not in the same city, due to work, (56:56).  Coming from a mother who worked, (58:01).  Advice to younger self:  what age?  What advice?, (59:20).  "We've only got this lifetime", (59:43).   LINKS: Purchase 10,000 "No"s Apparel Here to Support the Show IMDB:  Sarah Shahi Instagram: @sarahshahi Twitter:  @sarahshahi Facebook:  Sarah Shahi IMDB:  Robert Altman Matt's Amazon Influencer Page (shop thru this site for items mentioned in interviews to support 10KNos at no extra cost to you.)   RELATED PAST EPISODES OF 10,000 “No”s: Ep 84: Poo~Pourri/Supernatural CEO Suzy Batiz Ep 4: Extreme Poverty to the Red Carpet, Toni Torres Ep 59: Fight Depression with Creation, Founder/CEO Melissa Bernstein, Part I    If you like what you hear, please Subscribe, leave an iTunes review and spread the word. I have never known anyone as brave and tenacious as Sarah, and I’m honored to have her as a guest on the podcast this week; and listen to what she has to share on surviving depression in motherhood. While the subject of mental illness is heavy and sometimes hard to want to talk about, it is so necessary. I am grateful it is my sister who gets to address this tough topic with me! In this discussion, we aim to build awareness for moms who may wonder if they are struggling with depression, as well as to provide hope for moms who know they are in the midst of it and crave to be understood. Sarah offers three takeaways for basic coping skills and self-care while dealing with depression, and she is sure to acknowledge that while these tools sound simple, they are certainly not easy (especially when you are struggling to simply get through the day!) 3 Takeaways on Surviving Depression in MotherhoodEat: Have easy-to-grab and nourishing foods on hand for when preparing food feels like an impossible task.
