We start the new year off with a BIG movie, especially according to its star, Mr. Dwayne Mr. "The Rock" E. Normous Johnson. It's Black Adam, a superhero probably even fewer of you have heard of than Shazam (nee Captain Marvel), in whose pages B. Adam first appeared. He's not your daddy's superhero, in that he kills a bunch of people, but he probably is your daddy's (or granddaddy's) superhero in the sense that he's from 1945. Anyway, they made a long, boring movie about him, so we talk about it.ALSO: It's time to VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE SEXY XENOMORPH MUSIC VIDEO! Episode Notes: I decided to have a little fun with Black Adam, the movie starring Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan. MOVIE DISCUSSION: Melvin & Dan discuss the latest entry in the troubled, frustrating, and extremely strange DC Universe. This time it features fan-and-mom favorite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson donning a cool black suit and looking maliciously confused. Neat!  Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 35-minutes talking about Walter Hamada stepping down from the DCU, James Gunn replacing him, and the lack of cultural permanence DC has compared to Marvel, or even Horror/Slasher icons. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Daniel briefly details the 15-year journey Dwayne Johnson took to get Black Adam made, featuring himself in the titular role. Melvin & Dan agree: The first half of the film is pretty dang fun, albeit nothing new. Despite a marginally enjoyable experience, Melvin feels like it's "a movie that I'm already tired of seeing", one that has been made for the last decade and a half. Every two years the DCU has shifted and turned and changed its mind; do we really care anymore? Does it matter? Why even bother speculating? Black Adam's trailer, its opening exposition drop, and its plotline all tell a different story about Black Adam's origin, which is obviously cleared up by the film as it unfolds but makes the experience of watching the movie extremely confusing. Apparently, parts of Black Adam were "Rated R" worthy, and the current product in theaters is a trimmed edit to reach a PG-13. Melvin wonders which scenes were different. Apart from Black Adam feeling like most mid-Marvel flicks, it's also a superhero film releasing after Marvel had, like, 5-7 film and TV projects. The Superhero genre is feeling especially tired in 2022. Discussing Darren Mooney's Escapist Review of Black Adam where he felt the film was functionally worse than Morbius for various reasons. Melvin proposes that HBOmax start putting up the R-rated cuts of DC flicks since they can't seem to decide what they want with their DC films. Recommendations: Wendell & Wild (2022) (Movie) Emily the Criminal (2022) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Warum?

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Writers: Adam Sztykiel, Rory Hainnes, Sohrab Noshirvani Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Shahi, Noah Centineo, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui Synopsis: Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods-and imprisoned just as quickly-Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. After so many years (like 15), of Dwayne Johnson teasing a Black Adam movie, the movie has finally come out. And it's fine. The bar was extremely low for this film and despite all it's problems, it clears that bar. So there's that. This film can be explained by looking at its strengths being The Rock and its weaknesses are Dwayne Johnson. Here's what that means. For Black Adam to be any type of success it needed to be loud, violent and talk a big game. That's WWE The Rock. And that's what we got in the promotion of this film and even what the film does on screen. It's not interested in making too much sense but rather rocketing you from scene to scene with the promise of "The baddest man alive" doing his best "Bad Superman" impression. Where this film falters is everything else and that's because of Dwayne Johnson. Not because Johnson himself does anything really wrong but rather this seems to be a recurring theme with most films that case him. See, Johnson is such a big personality and can act well enough that for lazy directors and writers, they can just plop him into a movie and let that carry it enough to a popcorn film status. And that's what happens here in Black Adam. Surprisingly this film actually could have been good or even great had the things around Johnson been treated with some kind of care.  Aldis Hodge is a great casting for Carter Hall but the film doesn't even try to give him a script that really utilizes his talents. Pierce Brosnan's Dr Fate is turned into if you ordered Doctor Strange on Wish (and he shouldn't have been). It just feels like the whole JSA angle was put into this film to be "bad ass" but not to actually make it work for the story. Throw in terrible song choices for scenes and an overuse of slow motion and what we get here is a mid film that is disappointing because it could have been so much more.  Again, the bar was low for Black Adam. It did what it needed to do which was not completely end in disaster. But who knows what the future of DC films is because even if Black Adam wasn't a complete clusterfuck, WB Discovery clearly is.   Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! It's hard to believe Dwayne Johnson hasn't played a superhero before, but he's finally filling this gap in his resume with Black Adam, in which he joins the DC Universe. Brought out of a tomb after thousands of years, the character Black Adam has a mostly dour demeanor which doesn't exactly play to the wisecracking side Johnson has showed in other films. Black Adam also stars Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, and Sarah Shahi.

Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., it is a spin-off from Shazam! (2019) and the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, the film stars Dwayne Johnson (who also served as a producer) as the titular character alongside Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan. Johnson was attached to Shazam! early in development and confirmed to portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014, but the producers later decided to give the character his own film. Sztykiel was hired in October 2017. Collet-Serra joined in June 2019 for a planned release date of December 2021, but this timeline was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional casting took place over the next year, including four members of the Justice Society of America (JSA), and the script was rewritten by Haines and Noshirvani. Filming took place from April to August 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also in Los Angeles. Black Adam had its world premiere in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 21, 2022, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Johnson and Brosnan but criticized the screenplay and villain; the action scenes received a polarized response. A sequel is currently in development. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message
