We're talking YA sports books with Defector Media editor/co-owner Dan McQuade, who gave us two classics of the genre to read. Hoop Crazy was written in 1950 by Clair Bee, who was also a college basketball coach of some renown. The book features a Gallant type who has to defend his school's top-ranked team from the dangers of both racism and the three-point shot. Dan's second selection was Iron Duke, a 1938 novel by New Yorker writer John Tunis, who never considered himself a children's author, despite the fact that nearly all his 24 books were marketed to children. Napoleon makes his second bid for power, and comes unstuck, as Wellington and Blücher prove too much for him at Waterloo. It's a victory the Brits like to celebrate as a great triumph for the country, up on a par with Trafalgar ten years earlier. The truth, though, is that even within Wellington's army, there were more Germans than Brits. And, when you add in Blücher's Prussians, Napoleon's defeat owed far more to German soldiery than to British. Though Wellington's generalship, alongside Blücher's, was a crucial factor. The Iron Duke stood firm. Just as the old man Blücher kept his word and came to his aid, personally leading his troops, despite his advanced age and his injuries. Between them, they finished Napoleon's rule. Illustration: A British infantry square withstanding cavalry attack. Elizabeth Thompson, The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras. After the death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, many were wondering how his large fortune would be divided up.The Duke, who passed away at 99, had amassed quite a large fortune throughout his lifetime, much like his wife and monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.Prince Philip left an estimated $58.5 million when he died last month, and it was reported on Friday that "three key men in his life" were left money from his will, according to a royal insider. While the majority of his estate is likely to have been left to the Queen, a source close to Buckingham Palace claimed the Duke also recognised his closest aides."Unlike some other royals, Prince Philip will be generous to the three men who looked after him," the insider told Fabulous."These include his private secretary Brigadier Archie Miller Bakewell, his page William Henderson and valet Stephen Niedojadlo."All three men were hugely supportive of the Duke in his final years with Mr Bakewell frequently standing in for Philip when he couldn't make an engagement. Before the Iron Duke became the Queen's husband, Philip was born into royalty as the Prince of Greece and Denmark. His parents, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, were in line for the Greek throne, before they were exiled when Philip was 18 months old.His parents, Philip, and his four eldest sisters Princesses Cecilie, Margarita, Sophie and Theodora fled to France. It was in France where Philip was educated (in Paris, and later in Germany and the United Kingdom too), before he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939 when he was 18-years-old.Prince Charles leads the royals at Philip's funeral. (Photo / AP)Come March 1939 and Philip was a British citizen, adopting the last name Mountbatten which came from his mother's family. He had abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles. This was the significant year that Philip began exchanging letters with Queen Elizabeth II, whom he later married in 1947.By the eve of their wedding, Lieutenant Mountbatten was formally named Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron of Greenwich, also given the title of His Royal Highness. While he inherited these royal titles, Prince Philip gained a large amount of money and assets.Prince Philip left an estimated $58.5 million when he died last month. (Photo / Getty Images)Prince Philip was given a salary, a royal allowance from the Sovereign Grant which was an official expense account which was paid for by British taxpayers. This was around $686,000 per year.Prince Philip retired from his official royal duties in 2017, but it is unclear whether or not he continued to receive this allowance. The Duke maintained access funds which were earned by a private portfolio of properties and land, as well as assets set up by the Duchy of Lancaster in 1399.Prince Philip and The Queen are said to share a portfolio that includes stocks and land which was inherited by the Queen's family, including their Balmoral Castle in Scotland and Sandringham Estate in England. The insider claimed that Philip's grandchildren, including Prince Harry who has launched a number of scathing attacks on the royal family in recent months, will have been "sorted out quite a while ago" when it came to money. They said: "Philip was not the sort of character to punish a grandson [Harry] for misbehaving. He was a very fair, even-handed and lovely man. Never held a grudge."They added: "Philip had plenty of time to sort out all the legal stuff so it wouldn't attract inheritance tax. He was no more of a fan of leaving his cash to the Treasury than anyone else."The source added that the Duke's children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew – have been told they can "take what they want" from his collection of 13,000 books in his library at Buckingham Palace.

Jen wrote about Galentine’s Day for Kirkus. But one thing we can all agree on: Anna Karenina isn’t a fucking romance. Getting hit by a train does not qualify!- The 2 for 1 rule: in a male/female romance, she comes twice for every time he comes.- If you’re in Chicago, you can see Fated Mates Live at Spring Fling, and at KissCon, it’ll be a podcast ménage special with us, the Wicked Wallflowers, and Heaving Bosoms podcast.- What will Craven Day 2021 bring? Stay tuned.- Sarah’s friend Rachel Hawkins told Sarah to read A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane, which is a pen name for Meljean Brook, author of The Iron Duke. Is there danger banging? Yes. Is there vengeance banging? Also yes.- Jen read and loved White Out by Adriana Anders, which is a romantic suspense novel that takes place in Antarctica. It’s cold, but they still manage to danger bang.- Speaking of Danger Banging, Jen’s favorite is in the first of the Kinky Bank Robbers series by Annika Martin. It's honestly more like heat-stroke banging.- Jen and Sarah don’t think a quick and dirty read has to be InstaLust, but it does have to get right to the inciting incident.- Sarah recommends London Hale (a pen name for authors Ellis Lee and Brighton Walsh) as a reliable quick and dirty read. Start with The DILF (if you're ok with taboo) or Talk Dirty To Me (if you'd prefer something a bit further left on the Simone Scale).- Adopt don’t shop when it comes to real pet stores.- Breastfeed if you can and if you want to, but if you can’t that’s fine, too. Even if you live in Fucking Berkeley. Or the Berkeley of Brooklyn.- Some other of our favorite quick and dirty reads that are mostly in space: Grace Goodwin’s Interstellar Brides and Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians. But if you’re reading the Ice Planet Barbarians, please listen to our friend Dani’s Ice Planet Pod. It’s great.- More space romances: Laurann Donner’s New Species series, or Cavas, the one that appeared recently on the USA Today Bestseller list (not the New York Times, Jen misspoke) is one from the Vorge Series. Cynthia Sax has a whole cyborg series. Jen also really liked The Grabbed series by Lolita Lopez.- What we're trying to say is that these books are the romance equivalent of The Fast and the Furious series--which is the pinnacle of Jen's favorite movie genre, "Handsome men blow things up." - Finally, check out Brill Harper’s alphamallow series. But Jen’s favorite was Altogether, which is very, very hot. Yum. This Mr. Plow is not quite as hot; unless your name is Marge, of course.- Buy buttons and stickers from Kelly and t-shirts and totes from Jordandene.

Calypso, the Mother music of the Caribbean, has a recording history of over a century predating recorded jazz music, but the music business evolution and global spread of the music has declined since the late 1950s, aside from a few outliers and outside the diaspora spaces. "Nobody should do the f****ing Tour Bus. It's godawful." Welcome to a special "live" edition of Beats, Beards & Brews in which long-time friend of the pod and Irish Tour Bus inventor, David, joins us on the mic for a raucous episode recorded on St. Patrick's Day. What is the Irish Tour Bus? Three shots of Irish whiskey: Jameson, Bushmill's and Tullamore Dew. Followed by a pint of Guinness. There are only a couple rules involved with the Bus. You should drink the Guinness last. And you must drink it all quickly, in one go. Evan, Dan, Eric and David all drink down the Irish Tour Bus to kick off the episode and things naturally head downhill from there. Dan and Eric review Black Rebel Beard Co.'s new five-scent line-up of oils, which consists of The Iron Duke, The Dauntless, The Hurricane, The Thunderbolt and The Go Devil at recording time. After a brief side conversation on being homeless in Hawaii and how to properly live the #HoboDreamLife, the whole crew goes into a deep dive of Judas Priest's history ... and then the Tour Bus hits. Dan and Eric get into a heated shouting match over Judas Priest's 18th studio album, Firepower, while Evan and David manage to keep their composure post-Irish Tour Bus, for the most part. After narrowly avoiding a drunken brawl, the ferocious foursome go on to review the Irish Tour Bus experience in all its glory.

But did Napoleon really have such little respect for the man who would be his nemesis, or when he dismissed the Iron Duke so lightly was he just trying to raise morale? There are some curious parallels between the two rivals, they were both born in the same year, 1769, both read the works of Caesar and chose Hannibal as their personal hero, both enjoyed the pleasures of two of the same mistresses, and they even ate the food of the same personal chef.
