What if bivocational ministry isn't a compromise—but a key to the church's future? Kris Bentley joins Loren Richmond Jr. to explore the evolving landscape of bivocational ministry in today's church. Drawing on insights from her book Bivocational Ministry: Field Notes for Congregations and Ministers, Kris shares stories from over a decade of research and interviews with pastors and churches engaged in bivocational models. They unpack misconceptions around part-time and bivocational leadership, the surprising benefits of realigned congregational relationships, and how small churches can thrive with the resources they already have. Kris also offers thoughtful guidance for pastors navigating dual roles, denominations rethinking support structures, and seminaries designing education for a changing ministry future. In this episode, you'll learn: Why bivocational ministry is more than a financial necessity—and may be the future of pastoral leadership How redefining expectations can empower lay leaders and revitalize small congregations The difference between part-time, bivocational, and multivocational ministry models Practical tools for pastors and churches navigating role clarity and boundary-setting How seminaries and denominations can better support pastors in flexible ministry pathways Rev. Dr. Kristen Bentley is an ordained minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She has served in congregational ministry in the central Kentucky area for more than twenty years, sometimes in the role of a bivocational pastor. Prior to attending seminary, she worked in higher education administration, serving at both Midway College (now Midway University) and the University of Kentucky. Since 2014 Kris has been working at Lexington Theological Seminary (LTS), beginning when LTS was awarded a grant by Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of its Economic Challenges Facing Future Ministers (ECFFM). She was hired to direct the grant project and as part of that work, Kris initiated research at LTS regarding bivocational ministry. The research concerning bivocational ministry has been supported at LTS through grants from Lilly Endowment Inc., including both Lilly's ECFFM Initiative and later the Thriving in Ministry Initiative. Currently, Kris also is serving as an interim minister of a Disciples of Christ congregation in Kentucky. Kris is an alum of Lexington Theological Seminary, holding a D. Min. (2020) and M.Div. degree (1997) from LTS, as well as a M.S. in Education (1981) from Indiana University, and a B.A. (1979) from the University of Kentucky. Kris and her husband, Perry, live in the Lexington area. They have four adult children and three grandchildren. Trimble is the Resident Bishop of the Indiana Area of the United Methodist Church.Bishop Trimble has the personal mission to encourage all people with the love of Jesus Christ to rise to their highest potential. It is his commitment to his personal mission that led Bishop Trimble to create the “To Be Encouraged” Podcast along with co-host Rev.Dr. Brad Miller. Bishop Trimble says, “I am compelled by Jesus to share with you an encouraging word or two about Jesus, theology, the Bible, the pandemic, the environment, racism, voting rights, human sexuality, and the state of the United Methodist Church.” To Be Encouraged with Bishop Julius C. Trimble is to be published weekly and is available at www.tobeencouraged.com and all the podcast directories.https://archive.inumc.org/bishop/In episode 057 of To Be Encouraged with Bishop Julius C. Lund shares the importance of mental health ministry as an opportunity to show the love of Jesus to the community and provide resources available, such as a free study guide from Blessed Youth on the Chalice Press website. Bishop Trimble discusses mental health ministry in the church he once served and shares the benefits of having a mental health-friendly church. Lund emphasizes the need for lay people in starting a mental health ministry in their faith community and eliminating any barriers to participation.Additionally, they discuss the Surgeon General's advisory related to the spike in suicides in youth and highlight the importance of strengthening spiritual connections to God and one another to prevent deaths of despair. Finally, they explore the stigma and shame often preventing people from talking about mental health and seeking help for mental illness and discuss the importance of shifting attitudes towards mental health so that it is viewed as part of overall health, much like dental hygiene.Episode 057 with Dr. Sarah Griffith Lund is Part one of a two Part Episode featuring a discussion about Dr. Lund's book "Blessed Youth." This week Dr. Reyes talks to Rev. Sandhya Jha about their multiracial, interfaith upbringing, which is deeply rooted in both a love of Jesus and the fight against injustice. Their work in politics, the church, and non-profits is where they find community, inextricably tied up with the sacred. Sandhya Jha (they/them) is an anti-oppression consultant who particularly loves helping organizations get diversity, equity, and inclusion teams off the ground. Sandhya is the founder and former executive director of the Oakland Peace Center, a collective of 40 organizations working to create equity, access, and dignity as the means of creating peace in Oakland and the Bay Area. An ordained pastor with a master's in public policy, Sandhya is comfortable in the pulpit, on the picket line, or hanging out with friends and friends-to-be over a good cup of tea and a good story. Disciple Up #300 God In Drag – Drag Is Holy? By Louie Marsh, 3-29-2023 Link to article below: https://hotair.com/david-strom/2023/03/21/oh-my-god-n538175 Oh. My. God. DAVID STROM 12:31 PM on March 21, 2023 I am not a theologian, nor do I play one on TV. I didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn Express. Still, as a convert to Catholicism, I was catechized as an adult, and have a passing familiarity with Christian theology. I also, I hope, am not a complete idiot, and it takes a complete idiot to take the new theology being pushed by the Left seriously. Two different videos I ran across inspired me to write this piece. The first was a video of a progressive preacher explaining why drag performances are holy. Not just acceptable. Not even a wonderful expression of the diversity of human experience. Holy. ‘Drag is holy'? Get help buddy. pic.twitter.com/l8tmlOfAsE —
Hey Friends, This week's episode with Sandhya Jha is an important topic around race, culture and oppression. As Black History Month comes to a close, we're sharing this conversation about realizing when you have privilege and what to do next. You'll hear in our conversation how Sandhya struggled, and continues to face challenges, with being biracial. She talks about how this awareness transformed her perspective and the work she does for marginalized communities. Sandhya is an anti-oppression consultant who loves to sing and is obsessed with tea (drinking, not spilling). Their fifth book on ancestors and racial justice was published by Chalice Press in September 2022. And if you're a fan of the cartoon Avatar The Last Airbender, you might really like their new podcast, Bending Towards Justice: Avatar the Last Airbender for the Global Majority. Listen in as we talk about Sandhya's background and upbringing and how privilege shows up in her life Having her race become invisibilized by her group of friends The eye-opening moment that shifted her perspective about her privilege Questioning where you belong as someone who is biracial The controversy around finding freedom in not “belonging” to one particular race or culture Learning that getting to stand up for people of colour is a choice Story from the bible about Esther, and the power she held. “Being put in this position, for such a time as this” Episode Sponsored by Arbonne 30 Days To Healthy Living Do you love the show? Today we wish Holy Shenanigans a happy 2nd birthday... and talk about the intersection between faith, traumatic experiences, and trauma recovery with Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez.About today's guest:Jennifer Ohman-Rodriguez is in the first call process toward ordination in Word and Sacrament ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her first book, A Time to Mourn and a Time to Dance: A Love Story of Grief, Trauma, Healing, and Faith, is published by Chalice Press. Ohman-Rodriguez is a frequent workshop presenter in trauma-informed spiritual care and also curates the Trauma Recovery Page at Compassionate Christianity. She holds master's degrees in early child development and divinity. This weeks' poem: It's only just the dawnOctober's chill is falling, fog is rolling, and crickets sigh. A train is on track with mourning's blight and wheel clack in the mid-of-night.There's always something moving, even a drowsy lark. There's always changes coming, even in the deepest dark.True mercy can't be kept apart from the shadows of life and love. Mercy stretches her arms to embrace the whole sad world and breach the great divide. There's always someone walking, in the sweaty heat of life. There's always someone moving, shifting between dark and bright. Wandering souls aren't lost, when they remember their cause. They hold tight to hope in the darkest night or the cold of an early frost. There's always someone trying to tell you what you've done. There's always someone saying, you've lost and it can't be won. There's a train that travels in mercy and it fills the world with grace. On this train all are welcome – it's no matter of beauty, wealth or place. There is One who says you're accepted. There is One who extends all the grace. This is One who banishes the darkness and ushers in the morning light to shine on every face.Don't heed those words of worry. Don't let them hold you down. Wait for morning's dawning that streams beams of light all around.Look to the east and keep on walking – you're walking in the sun. There's always something moving, even a drowsy lark. There's always mercy coming, even in the deepest dark. The journey's not yet over – it's only, just the dawn.Copyright Tara Eastman 2016Support the show

Part 2 with Eric Smith. Immigration is as old as the story of America. Who belongs and who can come is an ongoing debate. (While we must also acknowledge that this episode was recorded on the land of the Arapahoe, Cheyenne, and Ute tribes.) Everyone knows the old saying that when you mix politics and religion, things get messy. But we also all know that more often than not, politics and religion have gotten mixed together, and that sometimes they are indistinguishable. Listen in on our conversation with guest speaker, Dr. Eric Smith, who talks with us about the Bible’s relationship to one debate that is as fierce today as it was 2000 or 3000 year ago: the debate over who should be allowed to be a part of a society. How can the Bible help us think through our own questions about the power of the state and our obligations to our neighbors? Listen in as we brew some relevant theology and dedicate time to helping us plumb the biblical tradition for ways to think about these contentious political—and religious—questions. ///*Rev. Sharon Risher to discuss her book For Such a Time as This. For anyone grappling with how to forgive the unforgivable, rebuild lives in the shadow of death, and hold on to sanity in the midst of hate, Rev. Risher’s story in For Such a Time as This will help you find your faith, and ultimately encourage and heal. Rev. Sharon Washington Risher was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. She earned a Masters of Divinity at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and served as Staff Chaplain and Trauma Specialist at Parkland Hospital and as Associate Pastor for Congregational Care at Rice Chapel AME Church in Dallas, TX. Risher has been an advocate for revising gun laws, and is a spokesperson for the grassroots advocacy groups Everytown Survivor Network and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She has appeared on CNN, BBC Radio, Good Morning America, and CBS and has been interviewed or written for Time, Marie Claire, Essence, Texas Monthly, Vogue, and VOX. Her advocacy work brought her to the White House, where she witnessed President Barack Obama sign executive orders pertaining to new gun laws. A sought-after speaker, Rev. Risher has shared her story of loss, forgiveness, racism and gun law reform with audiences across the United States. Pull up a chair and have a seat at the table with us! Leaders That Work In Their God-Given Strengths Are High Impact Click Here for the resources from our interview with Chad “I really believe God intended work to be a part of a thriving life. A life in which we flourish and experience well-being. It's so important that we work. It's just meaningful. But like anything else we can overdo it, we can do it in some misguided ways and what God intended as a good becomes a harmful aspect of life.” - Chad Hall Chad Hall felt called to the ministry at the young age of 19 years old. He started off as an associate pastor, became a pastor, and later became a staff member in the Baptist denomination. It was here that he stumbled upon the career of Christian coaching and drawing out other people’s expertise. On this episode, Chad will discuss strategies on how to be an effective coach. God is not only working in the church, but He is working in the business community and other non-profits. Being a ministry leader often does and should extend behind the church doors into our professional lives. Our outreach is through our “water cooler” conversations, our attitudes in team meetings, and the way we care for our co-workers. What you will learn: The difference between coaching, training and consulting That one of the most important leadership skills is the ability to say “no” The core issues that challenge the ability to say “no” How to balance your own confidence without edging God out The importance of being a humble leader How to look at your life like a story. What chapter are you in? “Sometimes we think that work can only be important if I can share Christ and get someone saved. And that's great. I mean, certainly love to see that, workplace evangelism. But I think we also need to be equipped with a vision for how our work really connects to what God's doing in the world.” - Chad Hall Resources: Coach Approach Ministries Western Seminary Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby Every Good Endeavor by Timothy Keller Bio: Chad Hall has been coaching leaders in ministry and business since 2002 and currently serves on faculty and as Director of Coaching at Western Seminary in Portland, OR. He has applied coaching first as a denominational leader with the Baptist State Convention of NC and later as an internal coach with software leader SAS Institute. He has also served as a pastor and church planter. His publications include Coaching for Christian Leaders: A Practical Guide (2007, Chalice Press) and Faith Coaching: A Conversational Approach to Helping Others Move Forward in Faith (Coach Approach Ministries, 2009). He has also written frequently for Leadership Journal. He lives with his wife Holly and three children in Hickory, NC.

March 2014 in San Diego TransFORM provided Homebrewed with three firsts: The debut of a new gameshow "En Fuego!" Joerg Rieger says nice things about capitalism Tripp lost a preach-off (to Peter Matthews pictured right) We had a blast catching up with old friends and meeting tons of new folks. Rebekah Berndnt and Micky Jones were great contestants for En Fuego! and Joerg Rieger was a good sport for Bo's pro-capitalist chiding. You will hear plugs for George Fox Seminary and Chalice Press - both sponsors at the time. Check out Joerg Rieger's books here and make sure to come to our upcoming live events at AAR in November, at Christianity 21 in Phoenix (January), and at Progressive Youth Ministry in Chicago (March). Brian Bantum teaches theology at Seattle Pacific University out in the mighty Northwest. This spring when he and Callid were both at the Christian Leadership Forum of FTE they sat down to talk about Brian's book Redeeming Mulatto: A Theology of Race and Christian Hybridity. Because they are in a hotel lobby there a bit of background noise, but it is such a terrific interview that you'll want to listen all the way through anyway If you want to followup on this conversation another great resource is this video of Brian giving a talk called "The Church Cannot be About Multiculturalism" at Quest Church's annual day conference on Faith & Race. Bantum is on twitter as well. Special thanks to our sponsors at Phillips Theological Seminary and Chalice Press: their sponsorship helps us keep getting these out to you for free. You may want to check out Bo's old post on Calling God She and She Who Is Not as well as Elizabeth Johnson's Barrel-Aged podcast about the Quest for the Living God.
