After my daughter Sally was born, I stopped sleeping. During the day, I had a hard time looking at my baby because I didn't feel like I could take care of myself, let alone her. Up to this point, I had managed my natural melancholy okay on my own, but after a terrifying panic attack, I reached out for professional help. I attribute my quick decision to get help to my older sister, Sarah, who has fought mental illness since she was a young teenager. This time of year can be especially difficult for many emotionally. That's why I'm dedicating three episodes to the focus on mental health in motherhood. On Monday, you heard Sarah and I discuss depression in motherhood. Today's episode is focused on how to get professional help. Next week, you'll hear from Sarah's husband, Logan, about how to support a loved one who's struggling with mental illness. In this second episode of the series, we discuss: - A practical tip to help you stay honest with your doctor & therapist - A few helpful thoughts if you're scared to try medication. - Two kinds of therapy you might not have thought about before. This time of year, I struggle more with depression. The winter months can be a really hard time - and I know it's just not me! That's why I truly feel like it's important this time of year to talk about mental illness in motherhood. To give this topic the full focus it deserves, I'm dedicating the next three episodes to focusing on mental health in motherhood. This week, you'll hear previous episodes I aired with my beloved older sister, Sarah, where we discuss depression in motherhood and how to get help with mental illness. After that, I will air a new episode with Sarah's husband, Logan, about ways to care for a loved one struggling with mental illness. In this first episode of the series, we discuss: One way depression manifests itself that you might not recognize (hint: knowing this might help you not feel so guilty when it hits). A simple tip to help on those days when depression makes it too hard to even eat. A helpful rule of thumb to use when deciding which self-care strategy you need most. Serial entrepreneur Sarah McKenna knows a thing or two about running successful data and technology companies. She has founded a couple of global data and technology companies. Apart from being the CEO of Sequentum, Sarah is also a Venture Partner at NextGen Venture Partners. On this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, Sarah talks about the strategic lessons she has learned over her many years of experience launching hyper-growth products and building highly efficient product teams.Sarah discusses with us:Her approach to hiring the first set of employeesSink or swim: why do startups fail vs the running themes of startups that do wellTasks that take up most of her time as a CEOFocusing on the ‘why' instead of the ‘how'When and how she hired her first HR employeeWhy startups should not risk their employees' well beingHer views on tech salaries going astronomicalThe work culture of Sequentum:Sarah talks about her journey to being the CEO of Sequentum. She started all the operations from scratch. Sarah further explains how she was able to bring some team right away. She began with three key employees in New York and India. She credits her team for being the best startup employees- incredibly sharp, hardworking, and adaptable. They have done a lot of recruiting on their own. Sarah feels that a startup needs to work very intimately and intensely. Hence a startup environment allows knowing people well and developing a community that complements each other's skills. The key trends among people in terms of a startup:In a startup, Sarah feels that people follow a ‘sink or swim' theory. Startups bring a lot of challenges with themselves. No one can explain how things can work there. Hence, people that succeed in startups are the ones that thrive in a fast-paced environment. They are highly creative. Hence, either people can find something that fits with their aptitude and interests, or it does not.“How much of what you do is why as opposed to how?”In Sarah's opinion, a startup is a continuous improvement of a particular product. It keeps getting better and better. Hence, there is not much difference between the ‘why' and ‘how'. They are intricately intertwined.Advice to the leaders in terms of employee well-being:Sarah talks about the period where her employees in India were willing to resume the office. Productivity concerns were raised. However, Sarah opposed it by saying that those issues can be resolved. However, the solution cannot be calling people in the offices in the middle of a pandemic.Hiring tech professionals in India:Sarah gives her general manager credit for greatly managing things. The company hires freshers mostly. Sarah feels that even though a fresher is not as productive as an experienced individual, it is beneficial anyway. As they are hiring and training freshers, they are incubating tech leads. Sarah appreciates how the team of India focuses on culture and celebrates it.Follow Sarah on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Abhash KumarGet highlights of this episode from our blog.BONUS: Building highly efficient teams is not possible without effective team building activities. Friday, 12 March 2021, 1 – 2pm With many Irish people mourning the closure of their local pub, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day by asking what place the Irish pub holds in our history and culture. How did people use pubs in the past, and what was the popular attitude towards them? Famous the world over, is the Irish pub indeed an imagined space embedded in the concept of “Irish hospitality”? In this panel discussion chaired by Dr Ciaran O'Neill, Deputy Director of the Trinity Long Room Hub, speakers will look at Irish pubs through the ages and the perception of public houses a century ago; the place of the pub in the history of folk music and revolution; what the pub means in Irish theatre, and what it tells us about ‘Irishness' and performance of culture. Prior to the panel discussion, four musicians from the Traditional Music Society of Trinity College Dublin (Claire Stafford, Sarah McKenna, Simon O'Connor, and Oisín Cullen) will be playing live music - make sure to tune in from 12:50 pm to catch some live tunes! Speakers: Dr Ciarán Wallace The pub has never been just a place where you bought alcohol. How did people use pubs in the past? Who went to pubs, who didn't? What was the popular attitude towards them? Ciarán will look at pubs in some cartoons published a century ago to see what they can tell us. Trish Murphy, Director of the College Health Service What is the personal impact of the pub environment on people's lives and communities? This talk will examine the personal story of growing up in a pub in a small town in the West of Ireland--both the good and the bad. The story will also highlight the skills that were developed from pub culture, and how this speaker used these when working in detention centres, prisons, and travelling alone in far flung places. Jack Sheehan If the pub is to Irish folk music what the coffee house is to American folk music, what does that say about Ireland? From the White Horse Inn of Greenwich Village, where musicians mixed with politicians, writers and radicals, to the Bogside Inn of Derry, where music accompanied planning for revolution, how can we describe the musical culture of the Irish pub?, Jack Sheehan's talk will be emotional rather than intellectual, a slightly shaggy wander in and out of various times, places and of course, pubs. Moonyoung Hong What are the links between two performative spaces – theatre and the pub – and their significance in Irish history and culture? The talk will examine the political, literary and cultural implications of J. M. Synge's The Playboy of the Western World (1907), Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars (1926) – both of which caused riots at the Abbey Theatre – as well as the works of other contemporary Irish playwrights who use the pub as their plays' setting, to interrogate the (problematic) ideas of “Irishness” and “platiality” (Chaudhuri, 1997).
In this "in the trenches" episode Sarah McKenna shares her battle with bipolar disorder. She discusses how she knew in a high school psychology class that something wasn't right, but was dismissed when she approached the adults in her life. In college she finally realized what was happening and found a therapist and started taking medication. However it wasn't until she was in her 30's that she received the correct diagnosis. Sarah's persistence and trusting her instincts are inspiring as are the people in her life that have supported and loved her through this. Advocating for ourselves and persisting when we feel something isn't right is the big takeaway I get from this episode. Sarah has a creative, thriving life with her husband and children and is a warrior mama. Psychology today how to find a therapist

Blackwater Holylight, as the name suggests, is all about contrasts. It’s a fluid convergence of sound that’s heavy, psychedelic, melodic, terrifying and beautiful all at once. As a heavy band, their songs aren’t anchored to riffs, but rather riffs come and go in waves that surface throughout the band’s meditative, entrancing songs. It’s a hypnotic sound, with orchestral structures that often build tension and intrigue before turning the song on its head — not by simply getting louder or heavier, nor by just layering elements. They expertly subvert the implied heaviness of a part, dissecting it and splaying the songs guts out to seep across the sonic spectrum. Now, having toured together extensively following the band’s wildly-successful breakout self- titled debut in 2018, Blackwater Holylight has honed their sound and identity to a powerfully captivating beast. Their live set is all about the slow build, seeming to combine the melodic tension of early Sonic Youth crossed with the laconic fever-dream blues of the first Black Sabbath album, and wiry experimentation of post-punk and krautrock. The lineup on the most recent album is Allison (Sunny) Faris (bass/vocals), Laura Hopkins (guitar/vocals) and Sarah McKenna (synths), with new guitarist Mikayla Mayhew and drummer Eliese Dorsay fleshing out their sound in exciting ways. “The process of this album was vastly different from our first record,” says Faris. “One, because we recorded it over the course of a few weeks, whereas the first record was over the course of about a year. And two, this album was a true collaboration between the five of us. Each of us had extremely equal parts in writing and producing, we all bounced ideas off each together, and we all had a say in what was going on during every part of the process.” “One of our favorite things about this album is that because it was so collaborative, we didn't compartmentalize ourselves into one vibe.” She continues. “It’s heavy, psychedelic, pop, shoegaze, doom, grunge, melodic and more. The whole process was extremely organic and natural for us, we were just being ourselves.” Veils of Winter opens with fuzzed-drenched, drop-tuned bass and baritone guitar leading a dirge riff on “Seeping Secrets.” Faris’ lilting and funereal vocals drop in, adding to the mournful atmosphere until a short turnaround progression hints at changes to come, as Faris and Hopkins harmonize eerily and the tune suddenly turns into a krautrock charge. “Motorcycle” kicks off deceptively with a heavy grunge riff building up for about 40-seconds before the song abruptly shifts gears into a synth-led post-punk harmony, sounding something like Lush meets Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. “Death Realms” is perhaps the poppiest track, based around soaring shoegaze guitars and interwoven light vocal harmonies. Soft piano notes, occasional woozy whammy bar dives and a driving tom-tom beat solidify its hooks. “Spiders” is a creepy- crawly guitar riff and counterpoint keys, while “Moonlit” explores prog-structures with a shredding guitar solo crescendo. The penultimate track, “Lullaby” is exactly that, a lulling, expansive tune exemplifying Blackwater Holylight’s genre smashing sound as it subtly moves across a vast sonic landscape atop a hypnotic 6/8 beat and repetitive 3-note motif. Throughout the album, their songs shirk traditional verse-chorus-verse structure in favor of fluid, serpentine compositions that move with commanding grace.
Being the senior vice president of fan services and entertainment at the renowned Boston Red Sox has its perks. But the owner of that title, Sarah McKenna, explains how none of it matters if you lose sight of what your role means. Fan Services: everything is for the fans who are here to be served. Entertainment: fans have to be pleased night after night, good team or bad, rain or shine, happy times (player retirements and military family reunions) or bad times (the 2013 Boston bombings or national unrest). Meet Sarah McKenna, the game face exec who loves her fans as much as they love her team.
On top of everything hard that’s going on in the world right now with COVID-19, the last thing that we need is to listen to our own negative self-talk and harsh judgement all day long as we try to navigate this new normal. With that in mind, I pulled an episode from the archives that I think is THE most important episode I’ve ever aired on 3 in 30. Which is a bold claim, but I really do feel that way. I hope the tools I present in this episode will help you to recognize and shut down that mean inner voice when it speaks to you during these strange weeks of quarantine. We really are doing the best we can. 3 Takeaways to Stop Judging Yourself Reject “filtered thinking” and embrace “big-picture thinking.” Talk to yourself the way you would talk to your best friend, sister, or daughter. Last week in the first episode of this series ("//3in30podcast.com/captivate_podcast/depression-in-motherhood/"") , my sister Sarah McKenna and I talked about strategies you can use in your own self-care in day-to-day life if you are struggling with depression and anxiety. Today we are going to talk about how to get help for mental illness. We hope this episode will be a blessing to women who are struggling and don’t know what to do. Sarah's three takeaways for how to get help for mental illness:1) Don't be afraid to try medications 2) Therapy is your friend! 3) Find a creative outlet (and remember, creative doesn't just mean visual arts! This can be musical, cooking, etc.) Sarah's website: Bombshell Bling ("//www.bombshellbling.com/"") Sarah's Instagram: @bombshellbling ("//www.instagram.com/bombshellbling/"") Thoughts on Thoughts podcast Episode #16: Finding a Therapist and Different Types of Therapy ("//thoughtspod.libsyn.com/episode-016"") Don't forget to listen to part 1 of our conversation: Surviving Depression in Motherhood. (https://3in30podcast.com/captivate-podcast/depression-in-motherhood/) **Please pass this episode along to anyone you know who may be suffering.** I am so grateful for this month's sponsor, here (https://3in30podcast.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=60375eb66eedce783aabb1e53&id=1f424c4ce8&e=ea67463d82) .) My absolute favorite product is the BB Cream, which is like a mix between tinted moisturizer and foundation. It's lightweight but with great coverage, and it has SPF 15! I also love their Lip Lasts which really do stay on all day. This makeup would make great stocking stuffers or gifts for friends this holiday season! Use the code 3IN30 for 10% off! My older sister, Sarah McKenna, has battled depression and bipolar disorder from a young age, and she has helped me and countless others in our own mental health journeys by being open about hers. I have never known anyone as brave and tenacious as Sarah, and I’m honored to have her as a guest on the podcast this week; and listen to what she has to share on surviving depression in motherhood. While the subject of mental illness is heavy and sometimes hard to want to talk about, it is so necessary. I am grateful it is my sister who gets to address this tough topic with me! In this discussion, we aim to build awareness for moms who may wonder if they are struggling with depression, as well as to provide hope for moms who know they are in the midst of it and crave to be understood. Sarah offers three takeaways for basic coping skills and self-care while dealing with depression, and she is sure to acknowledge that while these tools sound simple, they are certainly not easy (especially when you are struggling to simply get through the day!) 3 Takeaways on Surviving Depression in MotherhoodEat: Have easy-to-grab and nourishing foods on hand for when preparing food feels like an impossible task. Sleep: Pay attention to too much/too little sleep and aim for a regular sleep schedule. Move: Keep it simple. A walk or gentle yoga totally counts! Be sure to join us for part two in this series next week, where we will be discussing medication, therapy, and some of the darkest moments of our journeys. Wherever you or a loved one is at in the mental health journey, please know that there is hope!!
