It feels like just a few years ago that we had one type of mousse foundation, in a limited shade range, that we smeared all over our faces but not past our chin or down our neck... Now we are inundated with different types of foundations from powered to serum and all the styles in between to suit all skin types, with ever-growing shade ranges. This episode Kelly breaks down all the different foundation styles and helps us choose which might be best for us, with a few recommendations in there as well. With deep rooted beauty beginnings, Lan Belinky was destined to lead a global skincare brand. Born and raised until her young teens in Japan, the infamous center of skin care innovation, Lan was fascinated by the infinite beauty trends and tactics she was continually exposed to. Mesmerized by her Grandmother's meticulous 6-step beauty ritual and her Aunt's unique product application practices; the allure of the beauty world naturally beckoned. In the Spring of 1996, Lan's family moved to the United States so her Father and boscia Founder, Gen Inomata, could realize his dream of bringing Japanese influenced skincare stateside. Lan spoke solely Japanese at the time and worked diligently to learn English as a second language and acclimate into the American culture that was so brand new to her – but always, always held close her Japanese roots. Fast-forward a few years later, Gen's dream was realized and boscia was born. Lan attended The University of the Incarnate Word and graduated with a degree in Business Marketing, while spending every available moment helping to cultivate boscia. After graduating, Lan joined boscia full-time and helped lead many of the brand's major milestones including the first foray into prestige retail. Lan passionately believed in the power of boscia's fusion of botanical (BŌ) science (SHA), and that powerful skincare results could in fact be obtained from good-for-you ingredients. Lan attributes much of her contributions to boscia's growth directly to her biculturality. boscia's first collections (Tsubaki, Sake and Charcoal) were all inspired by her Japanese heritage as was BB Cream, which was the first of its kind to hit the US prestige retail market and garnered staggering success. In the Summer of 2010, Lan unearthed the Luminizing Black Charcoal Mask which catapulted to skincare fame and created the instantly gratifying peel-off mask craze. The Luminizing Black Charcoal Mask continues to reign as a boscia fan-favorite. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/message

If you aren’t a Mum yourself, share this episode with someone who is. The Best K-Beauty Hacks for Busy Mums When it comes to the perfect skincare routine for busy mums, the key is to maximise the products you do in the time you have available. Forget the 10 Step K-Beauty Routine! Swap it for these simple hacks: Sheet Masks: The Cheat to Smooth Skin Sheet masking can achieve in 10 minutes the kind of results other people pay a skin clinic for – and you don’t even need to leave the house to do it. Want to level up? The ultimate cheat way to smooth skin is multi-masking: multi-tasking while masking! Simply cleanse your face and pop on your K-Beauty face mask. While your skin is busy soaking up the nutritious essence, you can check things off your list. After 10 minutes your skin will be plumper, brighter, softer and smoother #mumwin! BB Creams: The Best Way to Fake a Good Complexion If you haven’t had a good night’s sleep since the kids were born, fake it with Korea’s best foundation invention: the BB Cream. Simply pat the formula into your skin. Within a few puffs, it will be transformed into a hydrated, even-looking complexion with fewer dark patches. Cracked Heel Creams: The Easiest Way to Soft Feet Just because you don’t have time to visit a day spa doesn’t mean your feet need to look like it. Try a foot repairing cream to get rid of any dead skin, hard spots and calluses that have built up on your feet. QUICK ROUTINE If you’re after a quick and easy beauty routine that targets all the key skin concerns quickly, try this: Step 1 Cleanse Prioritise taking off the day’s makeup and sunscreen. A quick cleanse with a Balm Cleanser followed by a second foam cleanse is all it takes to remove the day’s build-up. Step 2 Tone Next, splash a hydrating toner on your face to lightly prep your skin to properly absorb all your skincare. Step 3 Moisturiser When you’re a Mum, you don’t have time for additional steps in your routine, which is why Jelly Ko Bubble Tea Steam Cream is perfect. It combines the benefits of a serum, oil and cream into a single, hydrating drink for your face. As a bonus, it takes care of dull skin and pigmentation, which often goes hand-in-hand with mum life. Step 4 Sleeping Mask Sleeping masks are a total cheat step for busy mums, as they go to work while you go to sleep. You don’t need one every night - just a few nights a week is enough to reap the benefits. Massage your sleeping mask into your face just before you go to bed and you’ll wake up to beautifully soft skin. Try Jelly Ko Cherry Blossom Sleeping Mask. Rather than going crazy with the contouring, I’m going to give you all the tips and tricks to make your skin the star of the show. These are my picks for the top K-Beauty products to have on hand for your Valentines Day PRE-DATE PREP Subi Perfect Pimple Patches Nip pimple emergencies in the bud - Perfect Pimple Patches go to work really quickly so if you pop them on the night before your date your spot will be significantly reduced come go-time. They’re thin enough to wear during the day as well so don’t stress if you need to wear them to the date itself - I actually find they work better for pimples than makeup concealer because they flatten the spot and make it stand out less. Concealers tends to clump around the edges and draw attention to the spot. Tosowoong Pure Propolis Mask If you have time before your date, spend 15 minutes doing a face mask - your skin will thank you for it and your makeup will glide on like magic. For the glass skin glow, I love Tosowoong’s Pure Propolis Mask. It has been a consistent seller on STYLE STORY’s for years! Soaked in propolis extract, it brightens skin tone and helps to diminish the look of wrinkles with niacinamide and adenosine. Tosowoong uses a thicker type of sheet mask that has a luxurious feeling, and it features a wider design to fit more face shapes! Each mask weighs 23g, which is equivalent to a small bottle of serum/essence. Propolis extract is full of minerals, vitamins and mineral extracts to lift and protect skin while imparting deep moisture. NIGHT-OF PREP Laneige Glowy Makeup Serum Don’t have a naturally dewy complexion? Fake it til you make it! This gorgeous serum moisturises and boosts your skin’s radiance, prepping it for the perfect makeup application. It works beautifully underneath both foundation and BB Cream and strengthens the adherence and consistency of makeup as if you were applying a hydrating, radiant base and primer. Skin is left smooth and glowing. Plus, it’s pink and pretty - need I say more! Skin79 Super Plus BB Cream Hot Pink AKA Perfect Skin in a Bottle! Once you’ve aced your base you need a no-fuss, lightweight BB Cream to perfect your look. This non-cakey, super forgiving formula lets you fake your glow. Known for its ability to cover flaws, brighten skin and prevent oiliness, Skin79 is a cult-favourite BB Cream that was responsible for launching the BB Cream craze globally! Innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Powder Looking for something to keep shine at bay throughout your date? Keep Innisfree’s No Sebum Mineral Powder handy! This cute, easy-to-carry compact contains a sebum-controlling powder that’s infused with Jeju minerals and mint extracts. Set your makeup with it or touch up in the powder room on-the-go with ease. It’s one of K-Beauty’s favourite ingredients. And with its ability to repair skin damage, actively hydrate and fight wrinkles and it is little wonder. Today, on the Korean Beauty show we’re going to be taking a look at the truth about snail mucin Topics Discussed WHY SNAIL MUCIN IS SO GOOD FOR SKIN Snail mucin naturally contains a whole heap of skin-friendly goodies, including proteins, elastin, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid and copper peptides. Some of the benefits include: Firming and tightening the skin Giving plumper, softer and more youthful-looking skin Reducing visible scarring (from acne and pimples) Reducing hyperpigmentation Hydrating dry, dull, rough and taut skin However, perhaps surprisingly (given how famous Koreans have made it!) the use of snails in cosmetics and medicine is not new or unique to K-Beauty products. The ancient Greeks knew of snail mucin’s potential to heal skin, and also used it internally. Despite its many benefits to the skin, people rightly often wonder how snail mucin is collected, and in particular, whether it is harmful to the snails. HOW SNAIL MUCIN IS HARVESTED? Traditional methods of harvesting snail mucin were cruel – the snails were essentially dunked in pots of water with salt, vinegar or other chemicals to force them to excrete mucin. Thankfully, the methods for harvesting snail mucin have changed considerably. These days, there are a variety of “cruelty-free” methods of snail production and slime extraction. In fact, research shows that the quality of the mucin itself depends on breeders keeping good environmental conditions for their snails. As a result, breeders themselves regulate what the snails eat, how they are kept and how the slime is extracted. This also helps in certifying snail mucin products as cruelty-free. In Italy, for example, snail mucin is extracted by immersing the snails in a special steam bath that acts like a spa for snails. The snails are not harmed in this process. In other farms, the snails are simply placed in an environment where they can move over a bumpy surface, because this causes them to make slime like they do naturally. The mucin is then harvested this way. WHAT KIND OF SNAILS ARE USED? The land snail (achatina fulica) is one commonly used breed of snail. This is the one you’ll find in COSRX’s popular snail products. WHO COLLECTS THE MUCIN? Snail mucin is collected by the snail breeders who raise the snails. IS SNAIL MUCIN CRUELTY FREE? Yes, it is possible for snail mucin to be cruelty-free. As the actual snail itself is not harmed or killed in the process of collecting the mucin, it is possible for Korean Beauty companies to obtain cruelty-free certification for their snail products. The snail mucin used in Benton’s Snail Bee High Content Essence, Steam Cream and Mask is all certified cruelty-free by PETA. Similarly, COSRX’s Advanced Snail Cream and Essence are also cruelty-free. It is NOT possible for snail mucin products to be vegan, because snail is the by-product of an animal. CAN THE QUALITY OF MUCIN DIFFER BETWEEN PRODUCTS? Yes. The quality of the snail mucin can differ. However, the thing that makes the biggest difference is the concentration of snail mucin in the actual product. The higher the concentration, the better the resulting effects on the skin. Some products, like COSRX’s Snail 96 Mucin Essence contain as much as 96% snail mucin. This means that the benefits of the mucin on the skin are maximized. Other products, like iUNIK’s Black Snail Restore Serum and APLB Healing Moisture Snail Cream combine snail mucin with other complimentary ingredient to improve the efficacy of the formula, which maximises the benefits for your skin. HOW DO I USE IT IN MY BEAUTY ROUTINE? You’ll find it in a wide range of Korean Beauty products, from essences to moisturisers, face masks and even BB Cream. Tips To see maximum results, try using it for at least 2-4 weeks. This is the same as any new skincare product; Snail mucin is suitable to use both day and night. It’s light enough to apply under makeup during the day. BUT IT’S A MUCIN! Don’t be put off by the fact that it is mucus. Despite its name, snail mucin is not gooey. It is most often light in texture, with a minimal to neutral fragrance. Due to its viscosity, it makes a great binding agent. Last week in the first episode of this series ("//3in30podcast.com/captivate_podcast/depression-in-motherhood/"") , my sister Sarah McKenna and I talked about strategies you can use in your own self-care in day-to-day life if you are struggling with depression and anxiety. Today we are going to talk about how to get help for mental illness. We hope this episode will be a blessing to women who are struggling and don’t know what to do. Sarah's three takeaways for how to get help for mental illness:1) Don't be afraid to try medications 2) Therapy is your friend! 3) Find a creative outlet (and remember, creative doesn't just mean visual arts! This can be musical, cooking, etc.) Sarah's website: Bombshell Bling ("//www.bombshellbling.com/"") Sarah's Instagram: @bombshellbling ("//www.instagram.com/bombshellbling/"") Thoughts on Thoughts podcast Episode #16: Finding a Therapist and Different Types of Therapy ("//thoughtspod.libsyn.com/episode-016"") Don't forget to listen to part 1 of our conversation: Surviving Depression in Motherhood. (https://3in30podcast.com/captivate-podcast/depression-in-motherhood/) **Please pass this episode along to anyone you know who may be suffering.** I am so grateful for this month's sponsor, here (https://3in30podcast.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=60375eb66eedce783aabb1e53&id=1f424c4ce8&e=ea67463d82) .) My absolute favorite product is the BB Cream, which is like a mix between tinted moisturizer and foundation. It's lightweight but with great coverage, and it has SPF 15! I also love their Lip Lasts which really do stay on all day. This makeup would make great stocking stuffers or gifts for friends this holiday season! Use the code 3IN30 for 10% off! My older sister, Sarah McKenna, has battled depression and bipolar disorder from a young age, and she has helped me and countless others in our own mental health journeys by being open about hers. I have never known anyone as brave and tenacious as Sarah, and I’m honored to have her as a guest on the podcast this week; and listen to what she has to share on surviving depression in motherhood. While the subject of mental illness is heavy and sometimes hard to want to talk about, it is so necessary. I am grateful it is my sister who gets to address this tough topic with me! In this discussion, we aim to build awareness for moms who may wonder if they are struggling with depression, as well as to provide hope for moms who know they are in the midst of it and crave to be understood. Sarah offers three takeaways for basic coping skills and self-care while dealing with depression, and she is sure to acknowledge that while these tools sound simple, they are certainly not easy (especially when you are struggling to simply get through the day!) 3 Takeaways on Surviving Depression in MotherhoodEat: Have easy-to-grab and nourishing foods on hand for when preparing food feels like an impossible task. Sleep: Pay attention to too much/too little sleep and aim for a regular sleep schedule. Move: Keep it simple. A walk or gentle yoga totally counts! Be sure to join us for part two in this series next week, where we will be discussing medication, therapy, and some of the darkest moments of our journeys. Wherever you or a loved one is at in the mental health journey, please know that there is hope!!
