Whether cooking basmati, jasmine or red, everyone has a way to make rice. Measure up to the first knuckle? Wash until the water runs clear? Stovetop or rice cooker with bells and whistles? This week, Good Food gets granular with rice — how it's grown, how it's cooked, and how it's eaten. Dr. Amber Spry opens her identity politics class each semester by asking students to share how their family cooked rice. Culinarian historian Michael Twitty shares how red rice came to the American South by way of Western Africa. Rice royalty Robin Koda documents her family's legacy of growing Japanese rice in California. Matt Goulding explores the controversy over paella in Spain. The history of the rice cooker is explained by Anne Ewbank. Finally, Sophia Parsa is making tahdigs with her mother for this week's edition of “In the Weeds.”

"My relationship with money is money comes and money goes. For me, it’s not the point of success. It’s important for me to be financially stable and it’s important for me to be making a lot of money, but it’s not what I consider personal success.” Sophia Parsa is a tech co-founder, Forbes 30 under 30 honoree and a very accomplished entrepreneur. She co-founded the company Toot, which is an on-demand tutoring service after her tutor bailed on her the night before a big exam in college. The night before the test, she found a new tutor, thanks to the help of a professor, but then realized there's probably a better way to connect with tutors on-demand. The idea for Toot was born. Later, Sophia launched a dinner club called Mountain Gate, where entrepreneurs gather for dinner. Through Mountain Gate, entrepreneurs can get advice, they can form business partnerships and just connect with people who are like-minded. Today, Sophia is the director of community at FabFitFun, which is occasionally a sponsor of this show. FabFitFun is a subscription box that delivers a selection of full-size premium products to your front door. We discuss Sophia's transition to working for a company and why it was important for her professional development. We also dive deep into the growing pains of the early days of entrepreneurship, how to score some investment capital and what she plans to do with her money right now. Follow her on Instagram @SophiaParsa and her business @Mountaingate.
Hey everyone, in today’s episode, I share the mic with Sophia Parsa, co-founder of Toot, a marketplace that instantly connects students with tutors and academic assistance via mobile app, founder of Mountaingate, which connects leading entrepreneurs and artists, and is on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List for 2017. Listen as Sophia discusses how the idea for Toot came about because she had urgently needed a tutor one night in college, how a $25 GIF ad on Instagram skyrocketed their success, how investing in key relationships (including 100 student ambassadors) brought her where she is today, and why her next goal is to create access to education for everyone around the world. “START IMMEDIATELY. There’s nothing stopping you. Even if you have a full-time job and you can’t commit to it entirely, ideas take time. Uber didn’t happen overnight, Air B+B didn’t happen overnight. These were all long thought-out processes.” - Sophia Parsa Sophia Parsa started her first company at 21 Years old and relied enormously on her tutors to make it happen and because of a specific last minute tutor issue she had, a new idea was born: Toot App. Sophia is now the proud founder of toot, a mobile app that connects students to tutors in their area to learn anything they want. One would even describe it as a match.com for tutors, which is genius! And in a world where our education system is broken, this idea couldn't have been more timely not to mention needed! Tune in to her story to hear more about how she has accomplished so much in entrepreneurship and she just turned 24!!
