170 The Power of Authenticity: Indie Podcasters Take Notes from The Greatest Showman Movie

Podtastic Audio

In this episode of Podtastic Audio, I'm back after a brief break for something a bit personal—I had surgery for skin cancer on my left ear. It's been quite the journey, but I'm happy to say I'm on the mend and feeling grateful for all the support I've received. In true podcaster fashion, even during recovery, I couldn't help but jump back on the mic. I also talk about one of my favorite movies, The Greatest Showman, and how its themes of embracing individuality, overcoming adversity, and dreaming big resonate deeply with us indie podcasters. I break down six powerful lessons from the movie that apply to podcasting, reminding us that being different is what helps us stand out, and authenticity is what keeps listeners coming back. Whether you're facing your own personal challenges or simply looking to take your podcast to the next level, this episode is packed with inspiration and practical tips to keep you motivated. I may be down one ear for now, but my passion for podcasting hasn't skipped a beat. Thanks for joining me! Hello Hello* On this episode, our guest Cody Marian - an amazing visual creative - discusses his experience of creating daily art for over 1,230 days and the impact it has had on his life. He talks about the initial motivation behind the challenge and how it has helped him grow as an artist. Cody also shares his approach to balancing multiple projects and working with different clients. He emphasizes the importance of finding clients who appreciate his work and are willing to trust his creative choices. Cody's unique style is influenced by everyday objects and non-designer designs, and he aims to create work that is visually appealing and intriguing. He speaks on his experience in navigating the design and art space, and his upcoming magazine project. They also talk about their interest in disc golf and their plans for future collaborations.Liner Notes:Creating daily art for an extended period of time can lead to personal and artistic growth.Finding clients who appreciate and trust your creative choices is crucial for a fulfilling working relationship.Being open to inspiration from everyday objects and non-designer designs can result in a unique and visually appealing style.Balancing multiple projects requires effective time management and prioritization.Sometimes it is necessary to compromise and adapt to clients' preferences, but it is important to maintain artistic integrity. Sometimes clients buy designs but never use them, and there's nothing you can do about it.Navigating the design and art space can be challenging, especially for those who don't fit into traditional categories.Creating a magazine that is fun, cool, and inclusive without being edgy or alienating is a goal for Cody's upcoming project.Disc golf is a low-barrier, approachable version of golf that Cody enjoys and wants to get better at.Collaborating with like-minded people and having creative control over projects can be incredibly fulfillingFOLLOW OUR GUEST:One Link is Suggested depending on their platforms.LISTEN TO THESHOW*iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/theprocrastinationradioshow/id1571340501Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/41Tg2U9ozbeKciUhuwLGfk?si=9e7b6c6a2231417eJOIN OUR COMMUNITY OF CREATIVES:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/procrastinationradio/X/Twitter: https://x.com/proradioworldTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@procrastinationradioWHO ARE WE?ProcrastinationRadio* is a network with the purpose of cultivating creative conversation and expanding artistic discovery in every-way possible.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Catching Up03:08 Finding Clients Who Appreciate and Trust Your Creative Choices05:50 Embracing Everyday Objects and Non-Designer Designs in Art07:35 Balancing Multiple Projects: Time Management and Prioritization10:18 Compromising and Maintaining Artistic Integrity in Client Work21:27 The Frustration of Clients Buying Designs but Not Using Them24:01 Creating a Fun and Inclusive Magazine31:02 Collaborating with Like-Minded People

Hello and Happy Labor Day Today I  want to discuss how important community is as we have been so amazed by the neighbors within a few miles of our home.  Everyone helps everyone and it has been such a blessing in so many ways.  The weird thing is that we only moved  5 miles, but we have been surrounded with the most helpful people we call friends as they have helped us navigate so many things with adding 23 pigs and helping us get ready for our 4 dexters coming in about a month to helping us casterate piglets for the first time.  We have had a huge learning curve on our farm as we have had chickens and goats for a long time, but this will be the first time with pigs and cows.  So far it has been a fun experience with the pigs and we are really looking forward to the cows!!!!!     There are so many things to learn and it has been so fascinating what we are learning along the way!  For us, we have worked on pens and fencing probably the last four weeks because as we needed more pens, we needed to make more space as the piglets get weened, another one will be having piglets anytime, so we had to move the boar out of that pen and then the boar cant be alone, so we put our American Guinea/Idaho Pasture Pigs in with him as they have most of our garden for next year rooted up.  It is a great time for the pigs to be in the woods right now because there are so many acorns falling from the oak trees and they are in heaven with all the vegetation.  It has been a process, but we are sure enjoying it!   With our cows coming next month, we had hay to cut and a neighbor borrowed us their machinery and we were able to buy a semi load of round bales from them as well as we will need a bunch for the winter because we never know how long that will be here!     When we got our pigs, another neighbor had borrowed us their trailer to haul them and that was so helpful as well.  We have such incredible neighbors and we are able to pay back with heavy equipment work and my husband will be able to fix their equipment in the winter. All this to say, reach out to those around you because it is so important to build community where you are at.  We are all in this together.  Reach out to others and see what you can help with and learn as much as you can from those that have gone before you.     It is so nice that we can learn from you tube, but there is so much more power in surrounding yourself with those right in your own community.   I'm so excited to share that I will be having our first Monthly Women's Homesteading gathering next month, so if you are in central Minnesota, we would love to have you join us.  DM me for the details or send me an email at monica@claimingsimplicity.com https://fb.me/e/1dkvlPWsw Have an awesome week friend!  Talk to ya next week! Starting out as a 12v salesperson at Best Buy, Chris Ott spent his entire time with the company trying to get back into the tech/installer bay. After a year of excuses, Chris followed a friend to work at Circuit City where he could pursue his true passion. As a big box store, there were a lot of rules and structure, which Chris really appreciated. Over the course of 13 years, he worked up the ranks to become an install manager before the company came to an end. When the company went bankrupt, Chris decided he wanted to get away from the big box stores. Over the next few years, Chris experienced everything from higher-end boutiques to small mom-and-pop shops. Ultimately it was his part in an iPod-mini install video that went viral, that helped Chris really make a name for himself in the industry. He went on to work for some great shops, as well as some toxic ones. Through it all he learned the value of work-life balance and surrounding yourself with like-minded people.  What You'll Learn: How a viral video affected Chris's standing in the industry. What activity helped to pull Chris out of his depression. Why you should be picky about who you work with. And much more! Starting out as a 12v salesperson at Best Buy, Chris Ott spent his entire time with the company trying to get back into the tech/installer bay. After a year of excuses, Chris followed a friend to work at Circuit City where he could pursue his true passion. As a big box store there were a lot of rules and structure, which Chris really appreciated. Over the course of 13 years he worked up the ranks to become an install manager before the company came to an end. When the company went bankrupt, Chris decided he wanted to get away from the big box stores. Over the next few years, Chris experienced everything from higher end boutique to small mom and pop shops. Ultimately it was his part in an ipod-mini install video that went viral, that helped Chris really make a name for himself in the industry. He went on to work for some great shops, as well as some toxic ones. Through it all he learned the value of work-life balance and surrounding yourself with like minded people.
