The Gauntlet: Harder Questions, Higher Scores What are five things you will learn in this episode? What's the story behind The Gauntlet, and what problem inspired it? How does The Gauntlet solve the challenge of managing prep material and what's actually in the library? How does the new tutor dashboard streamline day-to-day student management? What is The Gauntlet's pricing model, and how does it alleviate changes in student utilization. For tutors who are already invested in different resources, what makes The Gauntlet worth trying? ABOUT THE GAUNTLET From the very first student he tutored, John McDowell has been on a single mission: get his students the highest scores possible. That obsession exposed a problem he couldn't ignore—free and official prep materials simply weren't hard enough. A student returning from test day complaining that the test was "much harder than the practice tests" isn't just a letdown; it's a bad rap for a tutor. So he built the answer himself: The Gauntlet Today, The Gauntlet offers the most rigorous SAT prep in existence, anchored by The Gauntlet book series on Amazon: a Math Challenge, a Verbal Challenge, and now a Vocabulary Challenge built from the most frequently repeated SAT words. Built on a proprietary pedagogy that has delivered an average gain of over 70 points from a baseline SAT Reading and Writing score of 660, the platform delivers the 300 hardest SAT verbal and math questions available anywhere, full-length and section-only mock tests, Mr. John's famous high-frequency vocab and must-know math flashcards, and 3,000+ categorized drill questions—every one written and vetted by six published content experts, not AI, with new content added each week. Now Mr. John's Test Prep is opening The Gauntlet to private tutors and agencies with its next leap forward: a tutor dashboard that serves as a true command center. Tutors can assign content from the full library—or their own custom drills, quizzes, and practice tests—to individual students or entire cohorts, track performance in real time with at-a-glance metrics like days to test, score deltas, target gaps, and each student's weakest area, and schedule homework effortlessly with an industry-first drag-and-drop calendar view. Students get automatic inbox reminders on due dates, and with a built-in command palette and persistent messaging, everything tutors need lives in one place. And the best part is the pricing: industry-first prorated billing per student. Most test dates don't fall at the end of the month, so why pay for a student's access for days they'll never use? It can save tutors thousands compared to other platforms—and tutors can even let students pay for their own access, with account connection still a breeze. Built by an SAT specialist with a transparent record of one-on-one success and an MA in Applied Linguistics, The Gauntlet is for students chasing top percentiles—and the tutors who get them there. Recent research identifies AI tutoring as a transformative force in modern education, capable of accelerating concept mastery and providing highly personalized instruction at scale. These systems benefit both higher education and special education by offering real-time feedback, reducing teacher administrative burdens, and creating non-judgmental environments for student inquiry. However, significant challenges persist, including algorithmic bias that results in unequal feedback across different demographic groups and critical risks regarding student data privacy. Furthermore, experts warn that over-reliance on these tools may impair student self-regulation and decrease vital human interaction. The sources ultimately conclude that a hybrid model—integrating AI efficiency with human mentorship—represents the most effective and ethical approach for future learning.
In this episode, I reframe “good enough” as a strategic choice rather than a compromise. Perfectionism often delays progress and keeps ideas from being tested.By starting with a simpler version, you can validate what works before investing more time and energy. It is not about lowering standards, but about making smarter decisions that move your business forward.____________________
A bot can sound warm, responsive, and confident, and still teach the wrong thing. That's the tension we dig into as we explore AI tutors, AI coaches, and practice bots through the lens that matters most to instructional designers: practice design that improves real performance, not just chat transcripts.Jackie walks through why AI can absolutely help us scale practice, create interactions faster, and give learners more chances to rehearse, reflect, and try again. But Jackie also draws a hard line: a conversation is not automatically learning, and “AI tutor” does not automatically mean “good feedback.” We break down what never changes in learning design, including clear goals, realistic scenarios, feedback tied to a standard, and a safe path back to real-world application. Then we get practical with four predictable risk areas (inaccurate feedback, generic responses, overtrust, and sensitive use cases like HR, legal, medical, mental health, or private data). From there, I share where AI is usually a best fit, plus five design requirements you can use to build better guardrails, including human escalation. You'll also get a simple decision framework I call the Help Fit test: Helpful, Evidence-based, Low risk, Protected, along with a concrete customer service role play example to show what “good architecture” looks like.If you want to use AI in training responsibly, this is your roadmap. Subscribe, share the episode with a fellow designer, and leave a review if the framework helps you design smarter practice.

SummaryIn this episode, I explore the psychology and strategy behind pricing for tutors and education business owners. We discuss why market research is not always the answer, how confidence and self-worth can influence pricing decisions, and how to create a pricing strategy that supports the business and lifestyle you want.TakeawaysPricing is influenced by psychology as much as strategy.Market research is less useful for unique offers.Your prices should support your business goals and lifestyle.Fear of losing clients can hold you back from raising rates.Pricing often reflects confidence, not just value.Tiered pricing and grandfathering can make price increases easier.Price increases are a normal part of business growth.Build your pricing around your business, not your competitors.____________________

The Process of Becoming a Counsellor - How to Write a Personal Statement for a Counselling Course In Episode 377 of the Counselling Tutor Podcast, your hosts Rory Lees-Oakes and Ken Kelly take us through this week's three topics: Firstly, in ‘Ethical, Sustainable Practice', they explore AI apps and depersonalisation in counselling - looking at how AI tools may risk weakening the therapeutic relationship and the importance of maintaining human connection in therapy. Then in ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Jane Godward and Tara Fox about their new book, The Process of Becoming a Counsellor: Navigating the Transformation - discussing the realities of counselling training, personal development, and choosing the right course. And finally, in ‘Student Services', Rory and Ken discuss how to write a personal statement for a counselling course - including what tutors are really looking for and how to present yourself authentically. AI Apps and Depersonalisation in Counselling [starts at 03:40 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken explore AI apps and depersonalisation in counselling, examining how AI tools may affect the therapeutic relationship and why therapists need to critically reflect on the use of AI in practice. Key points discussed include: The therapeutic relationship is built on empathy, shared humanity, and human connection - something AI cannot truly replicate. AI tools may provide generic or “stock” responses that risk reducing the individuality and nuance of client work. Therapists need to consider whether AI tools undermine trust, rapport, or the client's sense of autonomy. AI-generated summaries and interventions may miss important relational cues such as body language, silence, emotional tone, and previous session context. Critical thinking is essential when using AI in counselling practice - therapists must ensure clinical judgment remains central. The key ethical question is whether a tool supports the therapeutic relationship or risks replacing aspects of human support. The Process of Becoming a Counsellor [starts at 27:00 mins] In this week's ‘Practice Matters', Rory speaks with Jane Godward and Tara Fox about their new book, The Process of Becoming a Counsellor: Navigating the Transformation. Key points from this conversation include: Many students begin counselling training without fully understanding the personal transformation involved in becoming a counsellor. Counselling training is more than academic study - it involves deep personal development and self-reflection. Choosing the right modality and training provider is essential, as not every course will suit every student. The book explores the “shift” from learning counselling skills to becoming a competent practitioner able to work safely with vulnerable clients. The authors discuss the importance of diversity, identity, and the “social graces” model in helping students explore their own experiences and assumptions. Students are encouraged to trust the process of training, recognising that growth and change happen gradually throughout the journey. How to Write a Personal Statement for a Counselling Course [starts at 49:54 mins] In this section, Rory and Ken discuss how to write an effective personal statement for counselling training or counselling-related work. Key points include: A strong personal statement should be authentic, reflective, and written in your own voice rather than sounding overly formal. Tutors are looking for sincerity, self-awareness, and evidence that you understand the personal and academic demands of counselling training. Clearly explaining why counselling matters to you and what motivates you to train is an important part of the statement. Relevant experience does not have to come from counselling itself - life experience, teamwork, volunteering, and helping roles can all be valuable. It is important to show openness to learning, personal growth, and self-reflection. Applicants should tailor their personal statement to the specific course or role they are applying for and consider whether it is the right fit for them. Recycling is good, kids. Sometimes that even applies to song titles, as we look at pairs of tunes that share a title. Totally random example: "The Promise" is a fantastic song by both The Numbers and When In Rome. OK, we can't get anything past you. That wasn't random, because our Third Lads this week just so happen to be Terry & Larry Tutor from the aforementioned Numbers. L.A.-by-way-of-Texas band The Numbers cut some absolutely crucial singles between 1963 and 1967, as well as a couple of highly sought after albums. They were truly ahead of their time, crossing paths with The Who (whom they sued to , The Easybeats, Billy Gibbons, and the Grateful Dead. They were originally shoo-ins to be cast as The Monkees. Although they didn't get their due in their time, their influence on legions of power pop bands that followed is immeasurable. That is, of course, if you were to believe the extraordinarily detailed, myth-building liner notes and discography on the back of The Numbers' album Anthology '64-'67 , released on Bomp! subsidiary label Voxx Records in 1983. Truth is, the band, led by twin brothers Terry & Larry were barely old enough to remember the '60s. Yet, proudly wearing their influences on their paisley sleeves, they created one of the best, most collectible releases of the era (that part's true). Anthology is prime 1983 mod/power pop - brilliantly crafted, melodically rich, and harmonically deep pop music. Although the Tutors would only release one Numbers album in the '80s, they would morph into the "electrified Americana" of The Bordersnakes. Fast forward to 2025 (prompted by a rediscovery by YouTuber Matthew Street), The Numbers released their first new album under that moniker in more than 42 years, Mad Day Out (Bomp! Records). It finds the band with all of their strengths firmly intact, a chiming, harmony-filled blend of joyous folk rock and power pop. The guys say that this is the most fun they've ever had on a podcast...and who are we to argue with that? Plus, for those of who are into O3L games, we've got TWO for you this episode: "O3L by the Numbers", a Price Is Right-style trivia game; and "Twintuition", in which our twin guests reveal how much they know about each other. The Snowbirds, as Canada has known them, are coming to an end. The federal government is calling this a modernization plan for the Snowbirds, but it also marks the end of an era as the iconic CT-114 Tutors prepare for their final seasons in the sky. This week's episode dives into a wave of new research shaping how AI is actually being used in education. We explore what works (and what doesn't) when it comes to AI-generated feedback, including why blended, "hybrid" feedback may be the most effective approach - and why more feedback doesn't always lead to better outcomes. The conversation then turns to one of the most important emerging issues: bias in AI systems. From subtle differences in tone to stereotyping based on student characteristics, the research highlights why educators need to be cautious about the data they provide AI tools. "If you use AI to write feedback, it does not treat every student the same way equally." We also talk about the growing evidence around AI tutors - where they outperform humans, where they fall short, and what actually drives meaningful learning gains. Along the way, we tackle major questions around detection, student use, teacher workload, and whether AI can ever replace human connection. The big takeaway? AI is powerful. And how we design, guide, and use it in education matters more than ever. Research Papers discussed this week AI for Feedback Directive, metacognitive, or a blend of both? Episode Description: On this bonus sponsored episode by the Grable Foundation, we explore how learning is evolving in Pittsburgh and what it could look like in the years ahead. In this episode, I talk about why tutors often feel stuck after a period of business growth. It is rarely about a lack of demand or effort. More often, it is because the tutoring business has outgrown the way it was originally structured.I share why pushing harder with more marketing, more hours, or more activity does not usually solve the problem. Instead, progress often comes from pausing, thinking strategically, and redesigning how your business supports your time, income, and long term goals.Enjoy :-)Sumantha____________________
