Sophia Walker is the organiser and host of the BBC Poetry Slam Championship and is a former winner herself. She has a published collection of poems ('Opposite the Tour Bus'), has enjoyed success with her award-winning stage show 'Around the World in 8 Mistakes' and is one of the creators of The Spoken Word Theatre Foundation. Currently based in Seattle, Sophia has some strong but congruent views on the gifts and challenges that come with being a Spoken Word artist and this was a rich and stimulating conversation.
PHENOMENAL WOMEN SPEAK OUT While comedy still struggles with gender equality, the spoken word scene is well used to its biggest, most exciting exports being female. Following in the footsteps of Kate Tempest and Hollie McNish, we bring you some of the most exciting new talents in spoken word. Jemima Foxtrot, Iona Lee, Sabrina Mahfouz and Sophia Walker perform their work relating to (and not relating to) themes of womanhood. Chaired by Becky Fincham. Part of our Babble On - Spoken Word series of events.
In GBA 348 we get better acquainted with Charlie. We talk about how it's hard to talk about mental health and suicide attempts, depression, suicidal ideation, accessing mental health services, the downsides of talking about mental health, disability, writing, navigating school, bullying, getting help, and so much more. It’s a serious conversation but also a thoughtful one and it doesn’t just stay in the dark places. Content Note: Bullying, suicidal thoughts/ideation, depression, mental health issues, trauma Also at the end of today’s episode, after the conversation is over, I make an announcement about the future of Getting Better Acquainted which will be going on a hiatus after episode 350. This is GBA 200 pt 5 with guest host Charley Harrison. The #GBA200 season will celebrate 200 episodes of Getting Better Acquainted with a week of daily episodes where the script is switched and the people I know interview me. It's taking place from the 16th-20th of March. The guest hosts are Helen Zaltzman, Chella Quint, Sophia Walker and James McKay, Jen Adamthwaite and Charley Harrison. During this week we'll learn what Getting Better Acquainted might be like if it was made by someone else, and whether I'm a consistent character or not; we'll explore and celebrate how combinations of people and places create wildly different conversations. I'll also be re-sharing and discussing the first 200 episodes of GBA on the show's twitter feed, using the hashtag #GBA200. This is the fourth episode of Stand Up Tragedy Replayed, in which we remix past performances from our live shows so you can hear all of our tragic comedy, music, stories, poetry and much more. All performances were originally recorded at our shows at The Leicester Square Theatre, The Hackney Attic and The Dogstar in Brixton throughout 2012 and 2013. www.standuptragedy.co.uk This episode features some of our Old Friends - the performers who have done tragedy on the Stand Up Tragedy stage many times. Coincidentally they're all spoken word artists too. First we hear Superbard performing an early version of The Flood at The Dogstar in Brixton. Then Richard Tyrone Jones tells us his tragic tale of heart failure at The Leicester Square Theatre, which was the beginnings of his show Richard Tyrone Jones Has A Big Heart which was made into a BBC Radio 4 series. Then finally we finish with Edinburgh Fringe favourite Sophia Walker. www.superbard.co.uk www.facebook.com/richardtyronejones www.facebook.com/SophiaWalker We'll have more live performers for the podcast from our Tragic Christmas show on the 12th December at The Dogstar in Brixton. Tickets are available online now. All proceeds from Tragic Christmas are going to Arts Emergency, a charity who help people from less privileged backgrounds break into the arts. www.arts-emergency.org The Stand Up Tragedy podcast is produced by Bryony Hawkins with audio recording by Stephen Harvey. Our music is created for us by Sam Wilkinson (radiowhan@ymail.com) and George Brufton. It is hosted by Dave Pickering.
