I am very particular. I'm a big believer that a Tidy House makes for a Tidy Mind. I like things to have their place. I like routine and I hate clutter. Both of my televisions are mounted on the walls with their cables hidden away. I use organisers to secret my stereo cords, and a cluttered benchtop makes me feel so unsettled that I insist on having nothing on it. Nothing. Our microwave is hidden away in a cupboard. Our toaster is hidden in a drawer. And when it comes to electric gadgets, that's as far as I'm prepared to go. An air fryer? You've gotta be kidding me. Despite my wife's protestations, I still refuse to buy an electric kettle. Therefore, for most all of adult life I've made coffee the same way. An Italian stovetop, a little Bialetti number. You put the water in the bottom, coffee in the funnel, put it on the element and wait for the espresso to brew. It spits out the top of the shaft after about 5 minutes and 12 seconds of steady heat. It makes you wait, just a little. But it's worth it: a rich, black espresso, creme on the top. I love the smell, I love the taste, and I love the ritual. I figure my Bialetti brew lands in that perfect middle-ground between freeze-dried instant coffee and the in-home espresso makers which have steadily become ubiquitous in our kitchens. It's coffee for someone who cares about coffee, but doesn't require a gleaming chrome spaceship taking up 4sq metres on the kitchen bench. But am I missing out? Truthfully, I'm starting to second guess myself. Last year, a family member very generously offered to shout us a fancy espresso maker as a wedding gift. I gently demurred at the time. It's not that I think they're totally gimmicky. They're not popcorn-makers or at-home candyfloss machines. But it's funny, my parents got a machine a couple of years ago with a grinder and steamer and pitcher for the milk and Dad thrashes it every morning. My sister has an even fancier new number and brews velvety rich flat whites in those fancy see-through mugs. She says she hasn't bought a coffee since. And I can see how the economics add up. If you replace two cafe-bought coffees a week with a $500 dollar machine, add in the milk and coffee costs, you'd have paid it off by the next Rugby World Cup. To the best of my knowledge, only one other person in my life has consistently made coffee the same way as me. But as my brother sheepishly admitted to me last night, he's just ditched his Italian stovetop for a big, fancy espresso maker he bought in a Briscoes sale. “It's great bro!” he said. “You just push a button.” You just push a button. You see, I think that's it. Sure, maybe it's the cables on the benchtop that puts me off. The sound. The cost of a big fancy coffee machine. Or maybe in a world that's always changing and where nothing is guaranteed, starting every day in exactly the same way with exactly the same ritual and exactly the same brew... maybe starting the day by waiting on a simple process and a humble pot... maybe that's what makes the coffee taste so damn good. Anika and Liz are briefly trapped on a world where months pass in the space of seconds, which gives us a lot of time to talk about how great Carol Freeman is. Yes, we're talking about Star Trek: Lower Decks' "Fully Dilated" and "Upper Decks". We liked one of these episodes! Mostly! "Fully Dilated" was a personal attack aimed at us Why is Tendi so out of character this season?  The Boimler and Rutherford subplot felt like a throwback to TNG_S8, but what works as a 140-character tweet is less successful spread over 22 minutes of animated comedy If you're going to put T'Lyn in the T'Pol role and then make boob jokes, they should be … funny "Do you know how mid an episode has to be for Data to be our favourite part?" We liked "Upper Decks" a lot!  But doctors withholding pain medication is not funny Freeman continues to be the best captain

This week on The SAF Podcast, Jonathan Yeo, CEO, FlyORO joins Oscar to discuss the operational and supply chain logistic challenges that SAF presents. One of SAF's many benefits is its drop in nature, and ability to work within existing infrastructure. However, currently it still needs to be blended with kerosene. This is not as simple as someone mixing the two together with a large whisk. As Jonathan explains, the precision required to blend SAF and Kerosene to meet certification standards is significant and the requirement to blend according to market demand requires flexibility not currently found in airport infrastructure. Jonathan explains that their Alphalite modular system designed to optimise blend efficiencies, making SAF more accessible for both business and commercial aviation. Almost akin to a Nespresso coffee machine (other brands are available), blending the perfect amount of water and coffee. We also look at how a modular solution can deal with the inevitable ramp up in SAF production to service the expected growth in demand. We then dive into FlyORO's finances and discuss the pre-Series A funding they received earlier this year and plans for further rounds in early 2025. Jonathan also highlights why they are targeting strategic investors and the benefits they bring. The episode ends with their expansion plans in Australia and the US and why they are two markets that are particularly attractive and the role of Book and Claim in helping scale SAF whilst there is a continued paucity of physical molecules. If you enjoyed this episode, check out our most recent episode with Tom Berg, SkyNRG where we discuss their recent SAF Market Outlook report: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2202964/15275823Host and Producer: Oscar Henderson, SAF Investor

In this week's Kettle the topic is one that's been much in the news this week - the much-underrated insider threat issue. While there are thousands of security shops willing to sell elaborate firewalls, zero-trust barriers, and AI security systems that claims to be able to spot a wrong'un easily. But time and again the most effective thieves are already inside the building and using their corporate-issued credentials.Such was the case this week in the NSA of all places, where a rogue systems engineer, who resigned in anger, tried to sell purloined documents to a Russian agent in exchange for cryptocurrency. Brandon Vigliarolo covered the case and explains what motivated the plot and the surprisingly easy way he was discovered.News of another insider who did get away with it, it seems, came on Tuesday, as an ex-staffer at Dutch chip-making biz ASML appears to have taken a new job with Huawei, and is accused of taking secrets with him. Tobias Mann has the inside information of the case and, as Biden's sanctions bite harder, we may see more of these sorts of shenanigans. Then there's the ultimate insider - yourself. On Wednesday Jessica Hardcastle reported on an ACLU Freedom of Information lawsuit showing that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement hired security snoops to trawl through social media content to look for anti-American sentiments. She explains the complex web behind this and it's something we all had a lot to say on. You can see the full discussion below. So join us for 15 minutes of news, insight, and more than a little snark in the latest Kettle, hosted by Iain Thomson and spun to gold by producer Nicole Hemsoth Prickett. He and his wife studied engineering and computer science in Canada, then worked in standard tech-industry cubicle jobs in various locations throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. Then they retired from real work way back in 2005 in order to start a family. This was achieved not through luck or amazing skill, but simply by living a lifestyle about 50% less expensive than most of their peers and investing the surplus in very boring conservative Vanguard index funds and a rental house or two. Dave's challenge: Let's learn Slovene

It seems that Dave really likes the new COFFEE MACHINE - KAVNI APARAT. And he learned some handy new words as well. NAVODILO means INSTRUCTIONS, GARANCIJA is a WARRANTY, SKRIVATI is TO HIDE, KAVNA ZRNA are COFFEE BEANS and KAVNA USEDLINA is COFFEE GROUNDS. VKLOPITI is TO PLUG IN, IZKLOPITI is TO PLUG OUT, PRIŽGATI is TO TURN ON, UGASNITI is TO TURN OUT, and STIKALO is A SWITCH. We know that the coffee is great but maybe Dave should take it easy from now on or he'll start SHAKING – TRESTI SE again. Or maybe he could just try DECAF COFFEE - BREZKOFEINSKA KAVA the next time. Bellissimo!

Sahand Dilmaghani founded Terra Kaffe, an innovative at-home espresso-brewing machine that seeks to upend the environmentally disastrous use of 'pods.' Inspired by European coffee culture and the Bauhaus design movement the TK-01 machine is a beautiful piece of design simplicity and Sahand and I dive deep into the topic of sustainability, the perhaps misunderstood 'Made in China' brand, rituals associated with coffee, pinning down a target audience while offering a table stakes item like a coffee machine, and how to set off to build a lifestyle brand. An absolutely delightful conversation; so pour yourself a cup, and enjoy Sahand's insights into building a brand from scratch.

Rockingham nurses denied $50 coffee machine gift

6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett has lifted the lid on the hypocrisy of the political donation regulations of state parliament after WA Premier Mark McGowan defended attending a lavish business dinner that featured $1000 bottles of wine. Gifts to ministers worth more than $300 can only be kept if they pay the difference above the $300, but there is no cap on the hospitality like they receive or accept. "For example, if the Premier drank a whole bottle of Penfolds Grange last Friday worth a $1000, there's no need to pay any difference between the $300 and $1000," Bartlett said on Friday. "That tends to stick in the throat of some of our listeners." One of them is emergency clinical nurse and registered midwife Lorraine Durbin, who felt compelled to email the program after coverage this week of the Penfolds Grange dinner at property developer Nigel Satterley's house. She told Bartlett how a $50 coffee machine gifted to the staff room for emergency department nurses at Rockingham Hospital was removed because they were told gifts were not allowed to be accepted. "Shame on you Mr McGowan for slurping very expensive red wine with your property tycoon friend, whilst your nurses cannot have good coffee," she said.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode - which I advise to consume at night, in a quite place - I speak about private machine learning and blockchain, while I sip a cup of coffee in my home office. There are several reasons why I believe we should start thinking about private machine learning... It doesn't really matter what approach becomes successful and gets adopted, as long as it makes private machine learning possible. If people own their data, they should also own the by-product of such data. Decentralized machine learning makes this scenario possible.
