Beim Klabautermann!

ANGEL OR DEVIL? This week, Bryan is joined by special guest co-host Jen (writer at Baseball Prospectus) to discuss one of the most interesting episodes of Star Trek we've ever seen. The legacy of Spock has featured the culture clash of his human side vs. his Vulcan side, and in this episode of Strange New Worlds that dynamic faces a direct challenge from one of the most compelling characters ever created for the franchise. Spock's Human-Vulcan dynamic gets challenged by nonbinary Dr. Aspen who sees the whole thing as a false dilemma. Meanwhile, after the Enterprsie gets boarded by pirates and the crew imprisoned, Captain Pike decides to shed his Boy Scout label and be a true bad boy... by offering to cook for the pirate crew in hopes of inciting a mutiny. As the saying goes, the fastest way to the heart of a mutinous knave is through their stomach, right? Jen mentions their involvement with the Youth Leadership Intstitute and if you're interested in checking it out and seeing how it's helping young people address inequities in their communities, then check out yli.org. Yeaaargh! Pirates sighted in this episode of Strange New Worlds as the Enterprise is lured outside Federation territory in a ruse to capture the ship! A potential ally turns out to be an enemy though to they do engage Spock in a fascinating conversation about false binaries he may hold about his own identity. Human, Vulcan, both, neither? Yvette, Matthew, and guest Aiyana-Mei Tom, talk about the awesomeness that is Captain Angel, that steamy bridge kiss, and how the discourse of trans rights and trans identity helps us all better understand who we are.
Happy Pride to all our listeners! At the start of this episode, we reflect a bit on the importance of Pride, given some of our own recent experiences. Mike has also fully recovered from COVID, while Johnson has introduced his mom to more 21st Century tech. Our episode discussion this week is on "The Serene Squall," which features an amazing Jesse James Keitel as Dr. Aspen/Captain Angel. We test a different format this week by doing an episode recap, which in the spirit of Strange New Worlds may be a one-off episode format than something we decide to stick with.
Big, Idol and Stars talk about this weeks excellent villain turn and how many Sha-Ka-Ree's it takes to get to the centre of Spock.

When a grown-up slickback pulls a fast one on Spock, lying about a love triangle is his only way out of the trap. But while Pike is cooking up mutiny on The Serene Squall, Captain Angel's escape leaves everyone wondering what's next. Do Vulcans trim their pubes the way they trim their bangs? “The Serene Squall” A humanitarian mission takes an unexpected turn when a visiting counselor, formerly of Starfleet, turns out to be not who she claims. With ulterior motives tied to Vulcan, this Dr. Aspen is more interested in capturing Spock than the Federation flagship. Meanwhile, Pike, Number One, and most of the senior staff plot a mutiny aboard the pirate ship where they're being held by an Orion. Along the way, all sorts of Vulcan affairs are revealed, including the whereabouts of one long-lost brother. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss “The Serene Squall,” the seventh episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' inaugural season. We explore Spock's struggle with identity, the rich world building of Vulcan affairs that will transform how viewers read “Amok Time” and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and the trajectory of the Spock–Chapel relationship. We may also do pirate imitations. Hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing Production C Bryan Jones (Editor and Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer)

Space pirates are no match for Pike's hair on this week's Transporter Room 3. We review “Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach” and “The Serene Squall,” with lots of spoilers. We also talk a bit of news (the 25th anniversary of DS9's “Call to Arms” Season 5 finale!) and beam down a famous Red Shirt from Riker's imperfect future. So put down your Starfleet-approved industrial hair gel and listen now to TR3!
