Last time we admitted defeat in our attempts try to summarise a fifty-plus album discography. This time our play P6 turns up with an actual diagram (which you can see right here) and we spend an hour and a half trying to work out whether that's a genuinely useful map or just a very elegant way of saying "it's complicated."We get into what actually meant when they called one period of their music “solar music” and the other “moon music”, both to themselves and to people writing about them afterwards. We begin with Scatology and then go into a long stretch on Coil as a queer band specifically: not queer-adjacent, not later reclaimed as queer, but a band who were writing directly out of the AIDS crisis while the gay mainstream press was too frightened to touch them. We talk about the rejected Hellraiser score, Clive Barker's actual bowels, and how a soundtrack too creepy for a horror franchise ended up as one of the most bootlegged, most fought-over corners of their catalogue.We get into Trent Reznor giving them free run of a New Orleans studio for their aborted album Backwards, the slow drift into drone and ritual with Time Machines, and the posthumous artefact economy that's grown up around the band.There's a lot of Coil in this episode that isn't really music in any conventional sense; arguably a lot of it is more like documentation. Cette semaine, RFI s'intéresse aux passionnés de l'espace en France. Aujourd'hui, portrait de Vincent Plousey, un radioamateur dont la passion est de capter les signaux radio émis depuis l'espace par des satellites. Un loisir accessible, puisqu'il ne nécessite pas de matériel particulièrement sophistiqué. Sur sa carte d'identité, il est bel et bien Vincent Plousey. Dans son monde à lui, on l'appelle plutôt « F0GXR » pour « Foxtrot, Zéro, Golf, X-Ray, Roméo ». Une série de mots qui correspond à son immatriculation de radioamateur en alphabet radiophonique international. On la retrouve cousue sur sa casquette. Vincent Plousey vagabonde via les ondes radio depuis l'âge de dix ans. Tout a commencé sur un poste de radio, celui de son père, qui avait la propriété de capter les ondes courtes transportant le signal de radios étrangères. « En tournant les boutons, je suis tombé sur Radio Moscou, Voice of America, Radio Vatican, RFI… Immédiatement, cela a été un choc car, depuis ma banlieue parisienne, j'avais accès au monde entier ! » De ce « coup de foudre » naît une passion : le radioamateurisme. En 2024, la France comptait 15 000 radioamateurs et 400 radio-clubs actifs, selon l'Agence nationale des fréquences, qui délivre les certifications après le passage d'un examen obligatoire pour se lancer sur les ondes. Vincent Plousey a obtenu la sienne en 2012. Écouter l'espace depuis chez soi Depuis, il a élargi son horizon : terminée l'écoute des radios du monde entier. Désormais, il explore tous les signaux qui arrivent de l'espace et plus précisément des satellites. Ce jour d'avril 2026, devant son garage, muni d'une antenne et d'un récepteur, il parvient à capter un échange entre l'astronaute française Sophie Adenot et des élèves sur Terre au moment où la Station spatiale internationale (ISS) passe au-dessus de la France. On entend parfaitement la spationaute répondre à une question sur son train de vie et celui de ses collègues à bord du laboratoire spatial. « Au début, il y a toujours un moment de frisson du fait du délai de connexion, commente Vincent Plousey. Le vrai moment de bonheur, c'est quand on l'entend parfaitement. » Le radioamateur insiste sur la simplicité avec laquelle un tel contact est réalisé : « Avec un simple récepteur et une antenne télescopique, on peut capter la station en deux minutes, et ça, c'est génial ! » Pour Vincent Plousey, la plus-value du radioamateurisme réside justement dans sa capacité à être accessible à tout un chacun. De fait, la pratique ne demande pas d'avoir chez soi un matériel digne de celui de la NASA, y compris pour capter des satellites plus lointains que l'ISS. Car après la Station spatiale internationale, en orbite à 400 kilomètres de la Terre, le quinquagénaire entreprend une connexion avec un satellite maritime géostationnaire situé à 36 000 kilomètres de notre planète. Et preuve que l'expérience est possible même avec du matériel rudimentaire, le passionné va utiliser… une boîte de conserve en guise de parabole. « Elles ont la bonne taille et le bon diamètre pour recevoir des fréquences d'un gigahertz émises par ce type de satellite », explique Vincent Plousey. « Créer ses propres antennes, c'est aussi ce qui intéresse les radioamateurs », ajoute-t-il. Avec du fil de cuivre, le radioamateur accroche une conserve métallique au trépied d'une lunette astronomique tournée en direction du satellite géostationnaire. Plusieurs câbles lui permettent de relier le tout à un logiciel installé sur son ordinateur. La démonstration peut commencer. Après quelques minutes de réglages et quelques modifications de l'installation, les premiers signaux apparaissent sur l'analyseur de spectre. Vincent Plousey pointe son doigt vers l'écran : « Vous pouvez voir des lignes verticales typiques des transmissions de données par satellite », explique le passionné. Sensibiliser la jeunesse Capter des satellites toujours plus lointains, se mesurer à d'autres radioamateurs : c'est ce qui motive Vincent Plousey, même plusieurs années après ses débuts dans le milieu. Mais il le reconnaît, à l'heure du tout numérique, et alors que la pratique demeure majoritairement masculine et vieillissante, il est difficile d'intéresser les plus jeunes aux ondes radio. Il a pourtant des arguments à faire valoir. « Les jeunes se disent concernés par les problématiques liées à l'écologie. Nous sommes modernes sur ce point : je recycle en donnant une seconde vie à mes boîtes de conserve. Cela devrait leur plaire ! » Vincent Plousey essaie autant que possible de transmettre sa passion aux jeunes pousses en partant de sa propre histoire. « C'est un devoir de dire à ces jeunes des villes ou des campagnes que, même s'ils n'ont pas fait de grandes études, comme c'est mon cas, ils peuvent tout de même réaliser de belles expérimentations techniques et technologiques avec un certificat de radioamateur. » Un passe-temps qui pourrait occuper Vincent Plousey encore plusieurs années. Son prochain défi : capter la première station privée, nommée Haven-1, dont la mise en orbite est prévue début 2027. You can see how important it is to be clear when you make arrangements. If you're talking about times and places and making plans, confusion could lead to missed appointments, missed flights, or missed opportunities. Some skills are useful in all phone conversations, like asking if someone is busy when you call them. Other skills are especially useful for making arrangements, like interrupting someone to confirm information and asking about preferences. You might also have to reassure people and show flexibility when making arrangements. In today's dialog, we'll join a telephone conversation between Marco and Adriana.
