Anthony Cavallo's year long absence from the western districts riding ranks continues to arouse the curiosity of his many friends and TAB followers. A veteran of almost forty years in the saddle, Cavallo sustained multiple injuries in what appeared to be a simple fall at Wellington. Two fractured vertebrae in the upper back required a spinal fusion and the insertion of a metal plate. That plate is to be removed at the end of June, after which the veteran will determine the course of his future. Enquiries have been numerous about a likely return to the saddle for one of country racing's most respected jockeys. “Choco” joins the podcast with his own version of events. He expresses his gratitude for the many messages of encouragement he's received. Anthony says he'd love to keep riding but intends to accept the judge's decision. He looks back on the Wellington fall and says he had absolutely no warning. The jockey summarises an endless list of injuries. He reflects on many race falls but says none of his injuries have been below the waist. Cavallo looks back on one other nasty spill on the very same racetrack. He looks back on the way in which his apprenticeship was arranged by his father and an uncle. He pays tribute to his master Ray Guy. Anthony speaks freely about the nickname he was given by a co-worker soon after he joined the guy stable. He still gets that nickname from the majority of racing people. Like most jockeys he has vivid recollections of his first winning ride 39 years ago. He looks back on his one and only ride on multiple Gr 1 winner Potrero, the horse he rates the best he's ridden in a race. Tony hasn't forgotten a stakes win at Randwick on a 140/1 pop called Reign of Honour. He got to ride the same filly in a Gr 1 two weeks later. He looks back on the day at Warwick Farm when he won a Gr 3 race under the most unusual of circumstances. Cavallo looks back on a feature country win which came out of the blue when Glen Boss had to forfeit the ride. The veteran spent almost 8 years out of Australia during his long riding career. He reflects on stints in Singapore/Malaysia, Macau and Abu Dabi. He goes back to 2016 when he was still riding a power of trackwork at Randwick, but spending Saturdays at country meetings. Finally it made good sense to base himself in the central west. The jockey talks about his first country retreat at Cudgegong Waters near Mudgee. He loved the lifestyle. He continued his usual practice of riding regular trackwork. He formed a successful partnership with dubbo horseman Kody Nestor. Tony says he also got to Orange trackwork once a week for trainers like Alison Smith, Peter Cornish and Cindy Monaghan. He also rode work for Bob Howe on an abandoned picnic racecourse. He talks of his recent move into Mudgee township where he lives with partner Amanda. Anthony rarely rides in the city these days but has been able to win four editions of the TAB Highway. He looks back on those four wins. With his all important medical assessment due in a month, he's already contemplating the possibility of having to quit the saddle. He says he'd love to have some contact with horses going forward. It's a laid back chat with the little fellow of Italian descent who was besotted with thoroughbreds from the moment he walked into Ray Guy's Rosehill stables.

The official history of Australia may have forgotten colourful rogues like Tom Ley, but Mudgee painter Michael Bourke has painted a biographical suite of scenes that tell his life story in almost cartoonish images. He talks to Caroline Baum about how Tom Ley became known as Lemonade Ley and how he rose from abject poverty to become a Minister in the NSW government, before travelling to London and being accused of murder. It sounds like fiction, but it’s all true.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.au Superintendent of Mudgee Golf Club, Jason Seis, is a 5th generation farmer from the local Mudgee/Gulgong region of NSW. Knowing what farming life was all about and being a golfer as a kid, Jason took an opportunity for some work experience at Mudgee Golf Club during his later school years. It was at this time that he found a liking to greenkeeping and what it was all about. Fast forward to finishing school and Jason decided that he didn't want to work on the family farm but instead work as a greenkeeper. Without an apprenticeship available at the time, Jason was committed to his decision and put himself through the 1st year of greenkeeping at TAFE until he finally landed his apprenticeship at Mudgee Golf Club. After completing his apprenticeship Jason was soon on a path to an Assistant Superintendents role away from the local Mudgee area for a few years before the family farm would soon come calling. Moving back home and working on the family farm for nearly 10 years, an opportunity arose with a vacant position of Superintendent at Mudgee Golf Club and this time it was the passion of greenkeeping that came calling. Come for a journey with Jason and I as he gives us an insight into rural country life and greenkeeping in the Central West of NSW where it's hot and dusty, and 18 hole golf courses are separated by hours instead of minutes. The Regional New South Wales market overall is solid, without excelling at the levels seen in other regional areas like Queensland and Western Australia, but with individual out-performers. There is hesitancy in the Regional NSW market overall. It has a high number of locations where buyer activity is lukewarm and price performance below the levels seen elsewhere in the nation. It's noteworthy, however, that Regional NSW has seen better performance in its unit markets than its house markets, which is part of a national trend. Overall sales levels have improved, continuing a pattern of recovery over the past year, but remain well below the peak levels of 2021. Regional NSW saw a major decline in its market in 2022 and early 2023, with signs of gradual revival seen since mid-2023. Amid this overall patchy performance, there are some standout growth markets, based on individual Local Government Areas including those in the Wollongong, Newcastle and Albury regions. The Wollongong region continues to be a state-leading star. The City of Wollongong LGA has an above-average number of rising locations and the nearby Shoalhaven LGA continues to thrive: quarterly sales over the past 18 months have been rising steadily, showing one of the best patterns of growth in the nation. The Shellharbour area is also part of this region's growth. Newcastle remains an outstanding market and neighbouring LGAs including Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley municipalities all have busy markets. The Mid Coast LGA has delivered steady increases in market activity over the past year, quarter by quarter. Both Forster and Tuncurry have rising markets and Taree is highly consistent. While those markets are heading into over-drive, some of the high-profile regions of NSW have not yet got out of second gear. The Central Coast still has a degree of uncertainty; Byron Bay is showing signs of recovery, after a high peak in 2021 and a deep post-boom trough in 2022 and 2023, but remains well peak the 2021 boom levels; and both Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie have had patchy results over the past year, with indications of recovery in the latest quarter. The Tweed LGA is showing signs of joining the boom experienced north of the border in the Gold Coast region, without yet being fully on board. Elsewhere in Regional NSW, Dubbo, Wellington, Orange, Gunnedah, Inverell and Tenterfield are classified as rising markets; Goulburn and Mudgee are rated as recovery markets; and Armidale, Glen Innes and Parkes stand out for consistent sales activity.

GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Amber Pedersen's family's multigenerational lifestyle property is located in Yarrabin near Mudgee, NSW. Amber became aware of Ark Energy (Korea Zinc)'s Burrendong Wind Farm proposal, which includes several 250m high turbines towering up to 670m above the level of their house. The proposal also involves conservation-zoned land and koala habitat—Burrendong is an Aboriginal word for koala. Initially, Amber and her neighbors started Burrendong SOS (Save Our Surroundings) through local letterbox drops, which now comprises over 70 landowners, residents, and farmers, representing over 200 family members. Amber discovered that their property is within the 20,000 sq km Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone, forcing families, farmers, and animals to live within a "modern-day power station" without their knowledge or consent. She joined forces with and became co-secretary of Central West REZist Inc. With several active wind energy proposals and a hydro dam battery proposal on drought-prone land surrounding their property—mostly proposed by foreign-owned multinationals—Amber has taken further action. She helps unite community groups across Australia as an active member of the National Rational Energy Network, holding protests in Tamworth, Sydney, Canberra, and recently at the Dee Why Energy & Environment Forum. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Hon Mark Banasiak MLC, a former teacher, was elected to NSW Parliament in 2019, representing the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. Mark is also the Chair of the Federation of Hunting Clubs, which is one of the peak bodies representing the Shooters and hunting clubs in New South Wales.
Joe Bowditch has been a familiar face on major Australian racetracks for more than 34 years. He's still plying his trade from a Victorian base at 47 years of age, and still riding winners. The evergreen jockey has crammed a lot into more than three decades of race riding in four states. The Joe Bowditch story makes for an interesting podcast. Currently under suspension, he was happy to give me some time on the phone last weekend. He spoke to me from a Bundalong property owned by his great mate Luke Nolen. Joe talks about his recent Flemington win on Brazen Lady and acknowledges the support he receives from the Ellerton/Moodie stable. He talks of a long and successful association he's had with another Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths. Joe descends from a famous Riverina racing family. He shares memories of his father Des and uncles Barry and Wally- all accomplished jockeys. He remembers a wonderful friendship with trainer Ray Guy who was to have signed him up as an apprentice. When Ray died suddenly in 1992, his son Bryan became Joe's master. Joe recalls having been All Our Mob's strapper when he won at Rosehill the day after Ray's passing. The jockey recalls travelling to Mudgee to ride his first winner thirty one years ago. He looks back on his first couple of metropolitan winners. Joe talks about a loan-out to the famous Lindsay Park operation in SA. Colin Hayes had retired but still had a presence. He talks of the quality of horseflesh he got to work with including a Melbourne Cup winner. Joe reflects on his working relationship with both David and Peter Hayes. Peter's death in a light plane crash impacted the entire staff at Lindsay Park. He remembers two star apprentices who came through the system during his time at the famous Angaston operation. The jockey comments on the fact that the bulk of his career winners have been on the Morphettville track. Joe looks back on his first Gr 1 success in 2004. He had to change his tactics when the pace slowed suddenly in the middle stages of the SA Derby. He's ridden better horses than Conservatorium but says the genuine gelding remains his all time favourite. He talks about his narrow defeat on a future multiple Gr 1 winner in the 1996 Fulham Park Plate. Joe's had his share of nasty falls. He talks about a crash at Morphettville in 2000 that left him with a long list of injuries. He looks back on an association with On A Jeune in 2004. He won a Cranbourne Cup on the gelding and went on to ride him in the Melbourne Cup of the same year. Joe looks back on a brief stint at Corowa as stable rider for the legendary Riverina trainer Richard Freyer. He talks of a surprise phone call from his former master Bryan Guy- a call that led him to a six year stay in Queensland. Joe reviews the highs and lows of that Queensland sojourn- some major wins and one serious race fall. The veteran jockey delights in talking about his association with the brilliant mare Viddora, the highlight of his long association with trainer Lloyd Kennewell. Joe summarises Viddora's wins in the Moir Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes. He says she was unlucky not to have added another Moir Stakes to her CV. He talks of exciting trips to Dubai and Hong Kong with the daughter of I Am Invincible. Joe finished among the tailenders on Viddora in the 2018 Everest, but won't forget the experience. He closes by paying tribute to wife Jen and his four children from two marriages- Heidi (21), Callam (19) and the dynamic duo (Jake 5) and Frankie (3). Great to catch up with a long serving and thoroughly dedicated professional jockey.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." It is an affirmation as well as a promise made by many countries via the ratification of a number of Human Rights treaties. Australia is one of the countries that has made the 'promise' to uphold those treaties. However Australia has not fully incorporated these treaties into its own domestic laws through a comprehensive national human rights act, which has been a point of ongoing confusion, contention, debate and advocacy for some time. This has tested many people in leadership positions time and again, shedding light, not always positive, on the many fraught decisions and uncertain paths that need to be explored if the fundamental principles of Human Rights are to have any meaning or value in our society. To unpack what all this means, and to explain the purpose and future of Human Rights in Australia, Paul & KG had the privilege and absolute pleasure of sitting down with Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher who, at the time of recording this conversation, is the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission. We think you will find this conversation as entertaining, informative and inspirational as KG & Paul did. And of course, it was well-served by a most unconventional, yet delicious, wine from Gilbert Family Wines, in Mudgee, NSW. The wine is a 2022, Pétillant-Naturel Rosé. A gently frizzante wine that is both refreshing and holds its weight with generous mouthfuls of fine fruit, including strawberry and watermelon. A lovely drop provided by our friends at Annandale Cellars. Check them out for this and other outstanding wines.Sláinte friends! Some useful resources from this episode:1. Last time we had Kim Currie on Dirty Linen, she spoke about her history in hospitality and the way she developed her vision for connected dining at The Zin House on Tinja Farm, near Mudgee in country New South Wales. This time, we returned to Wiradjuri country to eat the food of First Nations chef Jack Brown. We also sat down again with Kim to speak about this particular moment in hospitality, especially as it applies to a regional family business that includes a winery, cellar door and restaurant. We also speak - passionately, angrily - about being an older woman in an industry still riven by cliquey boys' clubs. Alpha Blokes' first Double Champ and Yarn of the Year Winner, Matt "Uncle Jacko" Jackson joins us for an absolute ripper of a yarn. Making the trip from Gulgong, Jacko takes us through starting to work towards going full time with his timber business, JAM timber Co. before informing us of why he's scared of planes: by watching a crop-duster crash into a Ferris wheel. Being from the Mudgee area, the boys dabble in a bit of wine chat, including Jacko's stint as a bartender at one of the local wineries. Uncle bought the boys some brand new Akubras, so they run through the legend that made them and the process of keeping them fully Australian made. To wind down the yarn, Jacko takes us through his two near death experiences, the heartwarming story of the birth of his Daughter and how he copped the illustrious Hello Sport Baggy Green before wrapping up with the guest questions. Was great to finally get this mad unit on for a chat after hearing him pepper our ears with yarns of the highest quality for so long. Bugger! Wests Tigers reverted to the team that scooped up consecutive wooden spoons in Saturday night's trial against the Dragons. Despite a mostly much more positive showing the week before in New Zealand, Wests Tigers took to the field in Mudgee with a lack of intensity and got shown up by a side many predict to finish low on the ladder this year. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Joel Helmes is joined by Steve Stretton and Garry Watson for a look at what went wrong. Thank you to our Wests Tigers Podcast Forum members for their many 'One Word' summations of that performance against St.George-Illawarra. We share those contributions on the pod. There's a discussion around the impressive debut of 18-year-old rookie, Lachlan Galvin, and we ask the question - has he done enough to grab an NRL debut in round two? We take a look at the centre and winger issues that seem to be affecting several aspects of how the side plays. Ask, has Alex Seyfarth beaten out Fonua Pole for the lock position? And who do we need to pick in the back row to get some more thrust? Also under the microscope is the revelation by interim CEO Shane Richardson that the claimed Wests Tigers membership numbers are significantly lower in reality. And Yioti's Quiz is back with some curly questions designed to test Steve and Garry's memory and knowledge of our Wests Tigers! Not a win, unfortunately, and now another break before we are back in action on the field, none the less we thank you for your ongoing support of the Wests Tigers Podcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Wests Tigers are back in action this Saturday with the second of our two pre-season games. After accounting for the Warriors over in New Zealand last Sunday, Wests Tigers and St.George Illawarra take their Pre-Season Challenge game to the beautiful NSW country town Mudgee. On this mid-week edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, Eddie Otto is joined by Garry Watson and Steve Stretton. The guys wrap up that Warriors game, with Steve and Eddie bringing us their thoughts on the performance. Then the attention shifts to one of our favourite podcast features, a round of Buy, Sell, or Hold. There's also a preview of the Dragons match, including a look at the naming of new recruit Justin Olam in our side. Eddie, Steve, and Garry discuss what we want to see in this game and which players need to stand out to be a chance of selection in Round Two. Playing in Round Two (against the Raiders) means we will have to sit and watch every other team run around in Round One of the 2024 NRL season, including the Las Vegas doubleheader. Eddie asks if this might be a mental hurdle for our side. There's a look at the naming of Api Korisau as the club's skipper for 2024. And there's some coverage of the comments made in a podcast interview with the former Wests Tigers CEO, Justin Pascoe. It's our first official mid-week edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast, we hope you enjoy it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hugh Bowman wasn't where I expected him to be when we finally pinned him down for this interview. When I spoke to him a few days earlier he was still in Hong Kong undergoing physiotherapy for the legacy of injuries sustained in a race fall on November 11th. A short time later he made a snap decision to visit his parents in Mudgee. He wasn't long off the connecting flight to the central western town when he very kindly joined us on the podcast. This interview goes close to one and a quarter hours. We could have doubled that duration. When you talk to Hugh Bowman, it's a case of what you include and what you leave out. The champion jockey talks of his flight from Hong Kong. Hugh says he's making better than expected progress after a fall that could have had more serious consequences. He expresses gratitude for the support of wife Christine and daughters Bambi and Paige in the wake of the accident. He talks of a smooth transition into the Hong Kong education system. Hugh shares vivid recollections of the Sha Tin fall. He explains that the announcement of Joao Moreira's departure from Hong Kong motivated his decision to take up a short term contract. Hugh says he's following in the footsteps of Darren Beadman who intended to finish his career in Hong Kong. He talks of the strong racing influence in the Bowman family. The much travelled jockey remembers his secondary education at the famous Scots College in Sydney. Hugh reiterates the story of his days as an amateur rider and the thrill of his first win. He looks back on his first serious apprenticeship to Bathurst trainer Leanne Aspros. Hugh remembers with sadness the trackwork accident that terminated the career of champion bush jockey Bill Aspros. He and Bill were galloping horses side by side when the mishap occurred. He remembers his first win as a professional jockey at Gulgong and his first for Leanne Aspros. The top horseman looks back on his initial association with a really topline horse. Hugh fondly remembers his first ever Gr 1 win in 2004. By this time he'd lost his heart to a charming Irish colleen who'd returned home after a stint in Sydney. He says he was on the next plane to Ireland. He looks bacon a chance meeting with English trainer Mick Channon and a subsequent English riding contract. We fast forward to Hugh's association with the classy filly Samantha Miss who gave him his first Victorian Gr 1 success. He talks of his Sydney premiership wins- four in total. He says it should have been five. Hugh reminisces about winning rides on So You Think, Reliable Man, Racing To Win, Preferment and Shoot Out. He talks about some of the major races in which he's had multiple success. The champion jockey says his Golden Slipper win on Farnan is among his greatest thrills even though the race was run at a deserted Rosehill Gardens. Hugh speaks of his Asian riding highlights with special mention of the John Moore trained Werther. He goes on to talk of a win in the Japan Cup of 2017 which clinched his induction as the Longines Best Jockey Of The Year. He has some positive thoughts on the true meaning of the honour. We deliberately left Winx until last. Hugh has answered the predictable questions many times over. We talked more about his long association with the freakish mare and the degree of pressure involved. During the course of his reflections he touches on his admiration for a special group of outstanding overseas riders. Seventy five minutes passed very quickly. We left things out which will have to wait for another day. I'm grateful to Hugh for making himself available after a long voyage from Hong Kong to Mudgee, and less than three weeks after a nasty race fall. Many thanks Hugh.

I've made the effort to seek a good balance between contractors that are killing it, and those that are relaxing and enjoying the lifestyle and benefits of being their own boss. Between the hustle and bustle of Inner Melbourne, Sydney and Brissy, and the remote regions of Griffith, Kalgoorlie, Mudgee and Huon Valley. From the tropics to the Dessert to the Antarctic, Australia covers it all. Well today we have reach a new extreme. Welcome Mark to the dungeon for almost 3 hours of gruelling questions and amazing answers.
I made the trip to Mudgee to interview Dave Herman who has set up a local mowing business. Mudgee is about 3 hours from Lake Macquarie or Newcastle and it is a truly rural part of Australia. Rugged mountains and harsh farmland along with local families that are generational in the community. I always try to engage with the person I am interviewing so you get to know them a little as a person as well as learning about their business. Today was surreal in the sense that I met Dave and his family. His wife Elise and their two children. There is something special about meeting people instead of the quick introduction you get over the phone before an interview, or via texting back and forth while arranging an interview. A piece of my heart is now with Dave and his family. You will hear Dave sharing details that are personal and you might be tempted to judge or think he should do things differently. Try and hear the story. Appreciate the very personal nature of a face to face interview and learn. There is so much to learn from the harsh Aussie farming communities, especially when making a business succeed and build trust with the locals. You don't ever want to mess that up because word of mouth lasts for generations.
Henry talks with Rhys Gard, a writer and a chef. Between careers, he studied English and Film at the University of New South Wales. He has worked as a journalist, marketer, wine writer and restaurateur. He lives in Mudgee. Four Dogs Missing is his first novel. This conversation was originally broadcast on 97.7FM Casey Radio in July 2023. Produced by Rob Kelly.

In this show, we cover Aglianico - the best red grape you may have never heard of. Widely considered one of Italy's top three red grapes with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, many consider the wines of Aglianico some of the world's top bottles too. That said, because Aglianico is a grape of the more obscure regions in southern Italy (Campania and Basilicata, mainly), the wine hasn't gotten its due. It is much less expensive than top Barolos and Barbarescos or Chiantis and Brunellos – although it is slowly catching up. It is a grape well-suited to warm Mediterranean climates, and for the changing climates of once cooler growing areas like regions of California and Australia. Aglianico is historic, yet modern and there has never been a better time to get acquainted with the wines of this beautiful grape. Photo: Aglianico Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Here are the show notes: We cover the history of the grape and discuss possible origins. Aglianico is considered to be one of Italy's oldest grapes and it was always thought to be an import from the Greeks who colonized Campania and other parts of southern Italy. Today, Attilio Scienza, the foremost Italian grape scientist, has changed that theory. He believes the grape is native to southern Italy and the name is related to the Spanish word for plains “llano” (ll=gli, both sounds like y sound in canyon). The grape may have been domesticated from grapes growing on the plains We discuss how the grape was nearly extinct after phylloxera, and how Antonio Mastroberardino - preserved and propagated Aglianico to make one of the best red wines in Italian history – the 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva. The D'Angelo family revived Aglianico around Monte Vulture in Basilicata around the same time. The success of these two families on the world stage, encouraged others to start making wines from Aglianico, and today there are many great examples of wines from the grape Photo: 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva, widely considered one of Italy's best wines Aglianico Viticulture: Aglianico produces medium to small, compact bunches. The individual berries are small, round, and dark blue-black with quite thick skins. The grape requires a long, warm growing season with a warm fall to fully develop flavors and calm tannins and acidity. It is early budding and late ripening. Overly cool or overly hot conditions don't do good things for the grape. Aglianico is one of the latest harvests in Italy, with Vulture often starting harvest in mid to late November According to Ian d'Agata, the top English-speaking writer on Italian wine, Aglianico has three biotypes (variations of the same grape, but not different enough to be clones): Taurasi, with small berries, less vigorous, and sensitivity to spring weather that may reduce the harvest Taburno (also called Aglianico Amaro -- but not because it's amaro /bitter, rather because it's higher in acidity) is less fertile with big bunches. It is earlier ripening, with higher alcohol and higher acidity del Vulture is most intensely flavored biotype, with strong fruit aromas and flavors, and it seems to have fewer viticultural issues The grape also has clones, the most popular of which are used to create bolder, darker wines Terroir Aglianico prefers volcanic soils. The Campania DOCGs are on extinct volcanoes or have influence from nearby Vesuvius. The volcanic activity makes these soils rich in nutrients, well-drained, and very complex. The grape loves elevation and it thrives in spots where other grapes can't ripen. Although Aglianico needs dry climates with abundant sun, it must have diurnal temperature swings at night so it can retain its acidity and build flavor slowly Photo: Mastroberardino's Aglianico vineyards Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Styles: Generally, Aglianico has the following characteristics: Very high acidity and tannin. Floral (red roses), red fruit (sour cherries), plum (esp. from Vulture), leather and herbs (esp. from Taburno), smoke, and mineral notes. The wines are always savory. It is capable of long aging. Regardless of where the grape grows, these characteristics seem to be present. Some styles are lighter and more floral with higher acidity, while others are deep, earthy, fuller, and complex with tobacco, licorice, iron ore, and coffee notes. Aglianico needs age. It can be tough in its youth, with harsh tannin and acidity, since the grape has naturally high tartaric acid Other styles: IGT wines – blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or other native grapes Passito: Similar to Amarone from Veneto, these wines are made from partially dehydrated grapes. This style is very rare Sparkling: Made in the IGP classification. These wines often display red cherry, strawberries, and spice flavors and aromas Regions The grape is almost exclusively in southern Italy, mostly in Campania in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Sannio, and Caserta. In Basilicata, wines are mainly made around Potenza and Matera. All these areas are in cool, dry, sunny spots in the mountains The three main areas for high quality Aglianico in Italy are: Taurasi (1993 DOCG), which is near Avellino, is mountainous and therefore at altitude, has volcanic soils and has an ideal climate -- hot, sunny days, and cool nights to slow ripening and build flavor. Up to 15% other red grapes are permitted in the blend to soften Aglianico (often Piedirosso, the native aromatic grape, which is lighter than Aglianico, is used) Flavor profile: Black cherry, raspberry, cigar, coffee, earth, leather. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium bodied. Riserva: has higher alcohol levels is aged longer Producers: Mastroberardino, Feudi di San Gregorio, Ponte, Terre degli Svevi, Re Manfredi, Quintodecimo, Donnachiara, Antionio Caggiano, Salvatore Molettieri, Perillo, Luigi Tecce, Terrdora, Urciolo The wine we were drinking during the show, 2013 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi. Here is a link to the show I did with owner Antonio Capaldo, ep 337 Aglianico del Taburno (2011 DOCG) is near Benevento. These wines are less famed than Taurasi because the region was used for bulk wine until the 1980s. The region consists of 14 towns on the eastern side of the Taburno mountain. Rather than pure volcanic or a volcanic mix, soils are clay -limestone. Taburno has bigger diurnals than Taurasi, and is generally cooler than Taurasi leading to higher acidity. Flavor profile: Pepper, black fruit, figs, leather, and herbs. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium body Producers: Cantina del Taburno, Cantine Tora, La Rivolta Other Campania DOCS include: Cilento, Sannio, Gallucio, Irpinia, Falerno del Massico Aglianico Del Vulture (we did a whole podcast on this) is located in Basilicata, just around the province of Potenza in the north. The wine region borders Campania and Puglia. The wine is required to be 100% Aglianico. Aglianico del Vulture DOC and Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCGs are on volcanic, mineral rich, well-drained soils around the extinct volcano. The elevation of Monte Vulture and the rain shadow it creates make perfect conditions for Aglianico – it gets its long, cool growing season, where it can develop flavors and aromas over time Flavor profile: black plum, coffee, dried herbs, smoke, dark chocolate. These wines have lower acidity than the wines of Campania. They still have high tannin, and high alcohol Producers: Cantine del Notaio, Elena Fucci, Pasternoster, Macarico, Basilisco, Cantina di Venosa, Bisceglia, D'Angelo Aglianico can also be found in: Abruzzo & Molise, where it is blended with Montepulciano Lazio, Calabria, Puglia, where it is sometimes blended with Primitivo New World Regions Australia: Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Langhorne Creek, Mudgee, McLaren Vale, Riverina, Northern Tasmania– cool and warmer regions! The wines are apparently less acidic and tannic, and quite high quality USA: California: Many regions grow the grape but Caparone in Paso Robles was the first in 1992. It shows promise as the climate warms. Other US: Texas, New Mexico Argentina and Mexico are also having some success We end with a discussion of food pairings and encouragement to go out and try this gem!
