A deep dive on "making" with Kelly's daughter Claire and Pete Docter, the creative genius behind Pixar classics. Pete shares how he discovered animation, his journey to Pixar, and the evolution of films like "Up" and "Monsters Inc." Despite his success, he remains refreshingly humble about the creative process. His golden advice for young creators: just make stuff and push beyond your comfort zone. Pete reflects on the film "Inside Out": "I was there for every major decision, but where did this come from?". A reminder that creativity remains wonderfully mysterious, even for the masters. Check out Kelly and Claire's new children's book Marianne the Maker - you can pre-order HERE. This weekend a Disney Imagineering presentation was given at the South by Southwest SXSW Conference in Austin Texas. Thinking that it was a Future of World-Building at Disney presentation given by Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro, I was surprised to see that there were several Imagineers that made up the presentation. Even more interesting was the fact that Josh was accompanied by Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, who then brought three key studio leaders, Jon Favreau with Star Wars, Pete Docter with Pixar, and Kevin Fiege of Marvel. Together both Entertainment and Experiences partnered together to talk about major attractions coming to Disney. We bring some important insights from not only this and from other Imagineering activities going on, but we also counter it with some negativity that has been coming from former Imagineers that "The Emperors at 1401 Flower Street are butt naked and don't know it." We'll consider those opinions to better understand what is working and what is not. Join us as we showcase new Imagineering developments and the Imagineers who criticize them. ________________________________________________________ More Disney Insights can be found below! Just a few moments of tuning into nature can make you feel more inspired, connected, and less lonely. Let us guide you through a five-minute noticing nature practice — you don't even have to leave your neighborhood.Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/aj34s585How to Do This Practice: Find somewhere where you can focus on the natural environment, like your backyard. Take a few slow, deep breaths. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Notice your belly and chest rise and fall as you breathe. Note the physical sensations of your breath. If you closed your eyes, open them. Let your breath fall into its natural rhythm. Look around you and let your eyes wander slowly through your surroundings: the plants, animals, and bugs.  Let yourself be curious about anything that catches your eye and moves you. Rest your awareness there. Pause to appreciate it, and let it hold your attention for a few moments. Turn your awareness to your emotions. How are you feeling? When something you see evokes an emotion, take a mental photo of it. What about it captivated you? What did it make you feel?  Write that down in just a few words or sentences, or make a mental note of it. Let your gaze wander again whenever you're ready, repeating these steps.  Today's Happiness Break host:Dacher Keltner is the host of the Greater Good Science Center's award-winning podcast, The Science of Happiness and is a co-instructor of the GGSC's popular online course of the same name. “All of our emotions are there for a good reason. They're positive. They want to help. And a little anxiety is good. … All of society is saying, ‘Get rid of emotion. It's awful. It's evil.' It's not true.” In this episode, Mark welcomes Pete Docter, executive producer of Inside Out 2, and the Oscar-winning director of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out. Pete joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1990 at twenty-one years old as its third animator, and is now Pixar's chief creative officer. Mark and Pete discuss the ins and outs of Inside Out 2, including its themes about emotion, psychology, adolescence, and the discovery and acceptance of who we are. Pete reflects on the power of music to convey unconscious meaning, alongside the subtle and sophisticated animation techniques used by Pixar today. We learn about the new emotion characters (including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui), as well as those that almost made the cut. And Pete comments on the spiritual and moral dimensions that Inside Out 2 is able to explore. About Pete Docter Pete Docter is the Oscar-winning director of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Inside Out, and chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios. He most recently directed Disney and Pixar's Oscar-winning feature film Soul with producer Dana Murray and co-director Kemp Powers, which is now streaming on Disney+. Starting at Pixar in 1990 as the studio's third animator, Docter collaborated on and helped develop the story and characters for Toy Story, Pixar's first full-length animated feature film, for which he also was supervising animator. He served as a storyboard artist on A Bug's Life and wrote initial story treatments for both Toy Story 2 and WALL•E. Aside from directing his three films, Docter also executive produced Monsters University and the Academy Award–winning Brave. Docter's interest in animation began at the age of eight, when he created his first flipbook. He studied character animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California, where he produced a variety of short films, one of which won a Student Academy Award. Those films have since been shown in animation festivals worldwide and are featured on the Pixar Short Films Collection, volume 2. Upon joining Pixar, he animated and directed several commercials, and has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature–winners Up and Inside Out and nominee Monsters, Inc., and Best Original Screenplay for Up, Inside Out and WALL•E. In 2010, Up also was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Show Notes Continuity and discontinuity in Inside Out 2 Pete Docter comments on the main character/setting of Inside Out series: Riley and what's going on inside her head. Some psychologists think there are 27 emotions Puberty and adolescence New emotions: Bringing Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui (Boredom) into the picture Anxiety as the new protagonist Changing body and outgrowing an old sweater Riley's pimple: “That was something that Kelsey Mann, the director, was big on from the beginning. He would say, we were so used to seeing characters represented in this perfect, idealized way. And yet, when we look at the mirror, we realize, ‘Hey, I don't measure up to that.' That was kind of the message of the film from the beginning—is learning to accept yourself. You know, the flaws and all, because that's so much of our civilization is measuring ourselves against others. And especially that period in time growing up, you're suddenly socially aware, and where you fit in or don't.” From family to friends as the dominant group “All of our emotions are there for a good reason. They're positive. They want to help. And a little anxiety is good. Lisa L'Amour, who was a consultant on the film, her big thing is like, all of society is saying, ‘Get rid of emotion. It's awful. It's evil.' It's not true.” Researching the psychology of emotion for the film, and experimenting with various emotions as characters Anxiety as subtly controlling Schadenfreude almost made Inside Out and Inside Out 2 as a gag. Anxiety is not directly related to puberty. “Who are we? What are the things that make us who we are? Is it just our experiences, our beliefs, our actions that we take? And all of those start to get folded into the film.” “For me, the creative process is all about the nitty gritty details.” “So really that's just what I'm trying to do is for us in that room, as we're making it: Are we engaged? Are we emotional?” The complexity of guilt and shame Learning that sincerity—the truth of the character—is the key Special Effects work in Inside Out 2 The subtle and sophisticated storytelling device of Riley's eyes. How digital animation works today—more like a puppet than a drawing. Music as an unconscious communicator Dr. Paul Ekman: Emotions are largely under the hood. Soul (2020) and the philosophy of dualism as a Greek concept Embodied souls—a colliding, intertwined, inseparable reality Understanding the instrumentality of the brain The amazing amount of goodness that Pixar has injected into the world Pete Docter on working with Amy Poehler, Tony Hale, and Maya Hawke “Our emotions are really on our team.” Fear as a dominant emotion for the era we live in Joy vs Sadness or Joy vs Fear How Pete Docter's faith informs his approach to Inside Out “One other little bit of research we did that I was shocked by is that there's apparently a part of your brain that lights up especially when you watch animation.”

Last week on The Science of Happiness, we discussed the scientifically proven health benefits of the ancient Chinese practice of qigong with Harvard psychologist Peter Wayne. This week, we practice a standing meditation, with qigong master Sherry Zhang. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/3t5wdexeHow to Do This Practice: Take a moment to stand upright with your feet together and take a few deep breaths. Have your eyes looking forward. Soften your knee. Gently shift your weight onto your left leg and step your right foot aside. Face your palms inward, with your fingers relaxed and pointing down.  With your chin slightly in, relax both shoulders, and tuck in your tailbone. Ground your feet and relax your knees, armpits, and fingers. Take a deep breath and exhale.  Spend a few moments focused on your natural breathing and relaxed body. Now, bring your right foot back, so both feet are together. Lengthen your spine.  Take a moment to observe how your body feels, until your breathing slows.  Next, bring your hands together and rub them together vigorously, creating heat in between your palms. Now "wash" your face with your hands. "Wash" the side of your ears, to the back of your ears, the back of your neck. Now relax both hands at the front of your chest. Repeat this practice for one to five minutes. Today's Happiness Break host:Sherry Zhang is the founder of Tai Chi Solutions and a Master Teacher of Qigong. This week on Be Afraid, we take a hard look at the origin of our fears and consider whether films in the horror genre might actually help us face those fears rather than be held captive by them. Everybody's story is unique, but the one thing we all hold in common is that all of our fears–whatever they may be–start somewhere. They have an origin… which means that our ability to understand how horror films not only tap into our deepest fears but also give us an opportunity to wrestle with what terrorizes us depends upon our willingness to identify and explore the moments in our lives when we first learned to fear.  Joining us this week: Scott Derrickson is a filmmaker whose projects include, among others, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Dr. Strange, and The Black Phone.  Pete Docter is a filmmaker, animator, and voice actor. He is the chief creative officer of Pixar Animation Studios. Josh Larsen, host of Filmspotting and author of Fear Not!  Elijah Davdison, co-director of Brehm Film and author of Come & See: A Christian Guide to the Greatest Films of All Time  Dr. Craig Detweiler, filmmaker, Dean, College of Arts and Media, Grand Canyon University. Ed Catmull is an enigma. There's a good chance you wouldn't recognize him if he were standing right next to you. Yet, he's the creative genius and co-founder of Pixar - a totally unique organization that has completely changed the way many of us think about movies, culture, and even what it means to be a human being. Catmull usually avoids the spotlight. In reality, he would rather work - behind the scenes - to build a fertile culture in which others can grow and succeed. In which others can reach their full creative potential. And, in which others can satisfy basic - if not contradictory human needs - like expressing individual ideas while simultaneously collaborating with others to build it into something much more profound. Who could ever forget these iconic Pixar characters?: Tom Hanks in Toy Story Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks in Finding Nemo Samuel L. Jackson in The Incredibles Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a Bug's Life Should we take the time to listen to Catmull's advice? Well, many others have over the past few decades, including visionaries like Steve Jobs and George Lucas; creative geniuses like Brad Bird and Pete Docter; business icons like Bob Iger; and even top thought leaders (and former guests on our podcast), Professors Amy Edmondson, Linda Hill, and Roger Martin. One of the most fascinating developments of our time is that human qualities we have understood in terms of virtue — experiences we've called spiritual — are now being taken seriously by science as intelligence — as elements of human wholeness. Dacher Keltner and his Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley have been pivotal in this emergence. From the earliest years of his career, he investigated how emotions are coded in the muscles of our faces, and how they serve as “moral sensory systems." He was called on as Emojis evolved; he consulted on Pete Docter's groundbreaking movie Inside Out. All of this, as Dacher sees it now, led him deeper and deeper into investigating the primary experience of awe in human life — moments when we have a sense of wonder, an experience of mystery, that transcends our understanding. These, it turns out, are as common in human life globally as they are measurably health-giving and immunity-boosting. They bring us together with others, again and again. They bring our nervous system and heartbeat and breath into sync — and even into sync with other bodies around us.Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and founding director of the Greater Good Science Center. He hosts the podcast The Science of Happiness. His latest book is Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.______________If you enjoy this conversation, please share it with a friend, colleague, family ... or book club! Pixar's Up: Show, Don't Tell Your B2B Marketing Message

Remarkable Marketing

So many marketers use dialogue as a crutch. They spell out what their product is, how their audience could benefit from it, and wrap things up with a run-of-the-mill CTA.But you don't need dialogue to make a powerful B2B marketing campaign. In fact, you might not need words at all. This week, we're looking at the iconic opening montage from Pixar's “Up.” The “Married Life” scene tells the story of the film's main character, Carl's marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Ellie. We follow them from youth to old age – and Ellie's death. These moments have no dialogue, instead letting the music, color, and shape tell Carl's backstory. The animators didn't tell us about Carl's life – they showed it to us. The result? Perhaps the most iconic scene in Pixar's storied history – and that's no easy feat. And we think your B2B marketing can leverage these same techniques to communicate your message so much more effectively than a voiceover ever could.About Pixar's “Up”“Up” is a 2009 animated movie by Pixar. It was directed by Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson, who also wrote the story along with Tom McCarthy. The original score is by Michael Giacchino.“Up” follows 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen as he rigs up his house with balloons in an attempt to fly to Paradise Falls and fulfill a promise to his late wife. He is joined by Russell, an 8-year-old Junior Wilderness Explorer, who has stowed away by clinging to the porch as the house lifted off its foundation. Together, they navigate the treacherous journey to the falls. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Pixar's “Up”: Let music do the emotional heavy lifting. The “Married Life” montage tells the story of Carl's marriage to Ellie. Though the two tragically discover they can't have children, they find hope in their childhood promise of trekking across the world to Paradise falls. The scene ends with Ellie's funeral – and the promise left unfulfilled. These emotional moments are even more powerful because of composer Michael Giacchino's score. In an interview, Giacchino said that the “Married Life” montage was the most difficult scene to write for. In order to make the scenes most effective, he wrote simple music for the scenes – or even opted not to score some of the most emotional moments. This restraint gave the scenes a gentle, melancholic feel, rather than a melodramatic one.Tell a story with color and shape. Whether they know it or not, viewers use basic visual cues to put together and understand a scene nearly instantaneously. So much of a scene can be told through these basic visual cues like color, and shape. In “Up”, each character is designed around a shape and color that conveys something about their personalities. Carl is blue and a square, Ellie is pink and a circle, and Russell is yellow and egg-shaped. The animators also adjusted the color palettes for scenes based on their emotional content: they used saturated colors in joyful scenes and drab colors in sad scenes. These visual cues may seem basic, but the connotations of specific colors and shapes will create instant context for your ad's viewers.Focus on facial expressions and body language. We don't just communicate with our words. The “Married Life” montage uses body language to show Carl and Ellie's feelings towards each other. When Ellie points at a cloud, we see Carl's blissful expression. We watch Ellie flinch as Carl smashes their savings jar again, telling us everything we need to know about how Ellie feels at that moment. Through intentional camera composition, editing, and directing, you can communicate a story with no words at all.Key Quotes*”By showing, not telling, especially in this example, it forces you to fill in the blanks with words that you understand or emotions that you can connect with.” - Dane Eckerle*”When you show a story without any V.O., we have no idea where we're going. So each thing happens sequentially and it builds on itself. You don't know where it's going. But by the end of it, you totally get it.” - Ian Faison*”If you go on TikTok, they're telling, not showing at all. There's someone speaking to you, there's captions, there's big text on the screen and you're seeing and hearing everything [being] spoon fed to the point where now, moments like this land that much harder, because I'm not used to using my imagination as much. This technique will work better now than it would've 15 years ago because people are so used to being spoon fed stuff. So it's all the more relevant today.” - Dane Eckerle*”It comes down to B2B companies seeing their audience as people first and not just other businesses. You are talking to people who have real needs and different personas and different target audiences.” - Anagha Das*”You're marketing a journey. So as a marketer, take a snapshot of your target customer at the midpoint of their journey, and then show the story of their journey.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[2:12] Tell me more about Pixar's "Up"[5:35] How did Pixar get audience buy-in within the first few minutes?[10:37] How did composer Michael Giacchino craft music to tell a story?[13:07] How did the storyboard artists use color and composition to convey meaning?[14:55] Why is showing-not-telling more powerful today than ever?[16:45] Examples of show-don't-tell in marketing[19:27] How do I market a customer journey?LinksWatch Pixar's UpLearn more about how Michael Giacchino wrote the scoreHow did Pixar design the characters?See how Apple used show-don't-tell in their accessibility campaignAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. With the term "weird studies" gaining currency inside and outside academia, Phil and JF thought it was time to discuss the philosophical method they've been developing on the podcast since 2018. Borrowing a term from Erik Davis, they call it weirding, and here set about trying to understand what it is, and what it means. David Lynch's fondness for crying, the practice of queering in cultural theory, the all-too-real phenomenon of "global weirding,"the spooky agency of artworks, and the tragic death of E.T. at the hands of Damien Hirst are just a few of the subjects touched on in the conversation. "Weirding" also happens to be the working title of the book your hosts are writing for Strange Attractor Press, as well as an eight-week series of lectures and discussions starting October 25th, 2022, on the Nura Learning platform.
