The command to love and the expectation that we love as Christ has loved us is at the very centre of our Christian faith. It could be said to define who we are as well as  how we should act.St Thérèse of Lisieux is a teacher of love in her "little way" that she taught to the whole Church. May she pray for us that we may be faithful to the way of love. If you would like to contact me to provide feedback, suggestions or to ask questions you can do this via email:frpchandler@armidale.catholic.org.auAlso if you would like to support me in this work, please send me an email and I will provide details for how you can make a donation. St. Thérèse of Lisieux (1873–1897) was a French Carmelite nun and a Doctor of the Church. She is known for her autobiography, Story of a Soul, which is still a popular spiritual read today. She is one of the most popular saints of the 20th century and still very popular today. St. Thérèse was never known for exhibiting the physical phenomena or ecstasies many other mystics throughout history have shown, and actually considered herself an anti-mystic. However, her deep understanding of scripture and her connection to God shows she definitely had a mystical connection to the divine. St. Thérèse is the official patroness of the missions, and she never left the confines of her convent. What wisdom from the Church! Her prayer and sacrifice allowed her to reach more souls than even the busiest and most traveled missionary.Mother Teresa (who appropriately took the name of St. Thérèse when she became a religious sister) taught us to “Do ordinary things with extraordinary love.” This is the heart of a Eucharistic Missionary. If you enjoyed this conversation, please spend a minute and leave us a review and/or copy the link of this episode and share it with a friend! If you would like to watch today's conversation, please check out https://youtu.be/xE_uou1Erp0If you would like to check out SOLT Family Mission Experience, please check out: https://www.soltfme.org/You can also check out our new Lenten Devotional here (just in time for Lent!): https://store.eucharisticrevival.org/products/revival-a-lenten-devotional-for-eucharistic-renewalYou can find resources for the ongoing National Eucharistic Revival by visiting: www.eucharisticrevival.orgAnd, finally, a must-read for any Catholic is St. Thérèse's "Story of a Soul" which you can find here: https://www.icspublications.org/products/story-of-a-soul-the-autobiography-of-st-therese-of-lisieux?srsltid=AfmBOorEZjDARm102tr-qfx0du8bWZjiIeXqmDoG8jAgSmMHYY7hN05kAn NEC Podcasts original.

Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897), popularly known as "the Little Flower" and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. She was a cloistered Carmelite Discalced nun who entered the Carmel of Lisieux at fifteen. She attained a high degree of holiness by carrying out her daily duties with perfect fidelity, having a childlike confidence in God's providence and merciful love. The Little Flower had a great love of the Church and a zeal for the conversion of souls. She prayed especially for priests and was always ready to be at the service of others. She died of consumption on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, and was canonized in 1925. She has never ceased to fulfill her promise: "I will pass my heaven in doing good on earth." Her interior life is revealed in her autobiography, Story of a Soul. In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church. In his Apostolic Exhortation On Christian Joy (Gaudete in Domino), Paul VI spoke of St. Thérèse in 1975. "In more recent times, St. Thérèse of Lisieux shows us the courageous way of abandonment into the hands of God to whom she entrusts her littleness. And yet it is not that she has no experience of the feeling of God's absence, a feeling which our century is harshly experiencing. This is the moment of perfect joy for the poor, weak little thing. What happiness for it to remain there nevertheless, and to gaze at the invisible light that hides from its faith." We've mentioned some saints before here on the Mourning Glory Podcast including St. Faustina, St, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and recently touched on St. Dymphna. Some saints are more well-known than others like St. Teresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Sienna and St. John Bosco, just to name a few. However, one saint in particular, St. Therese of Lisieux seems to generate a mixed reaction. Yet, she suffered greatly throughout her life and is an inspiration for remaining faithful through grief and sorrow.About St. ThérèseSt. Thérèse of Lisieux was born January 2, 1873, Alençon, France and died September 30, 1897. She was canonized on May 17, 1925 and her feast day is celebrated on October 1. Therese was a Carmelite nun whose service to her Roman Catholic order, although outwardly unremarkable, was later recognized for its exemplary spiritual accomplishments. She was named a doctor of the church by Pope John Paul II in 1997. She is a patron saint of missionaries, florists, pilots, and priests. She is also invoked on behalf of the sick and is commonly referred to as the “little flower”.So what Is it about her that generates mixed reactions? Is it the fact that some think of her as a little girl dancing around with flowers in the French countryside, singing songs? What is it about her “little ways” that people DO respond to and what makes her so influential and adored by many?Guest BioRosaline (Roz) Cruz-Rine, MA, MFT has been a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist for over 19 years. She has treated Children, Adolescents, Adults, Families, and Groups in all areas pertaining to Mental Health. Having recently closed her private practice of 17 years, she now works for St. Michael's Catholic Church in Stockton, CA. as the Director of Adult Faith Formation which began as a volunteer position over 10 years ago. She continues clinical work with referred clients and has begun a faith-based grief support group in her parish. Her work continues to include Trauma, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, and other areas which can result in Grief and/or Loss. She is the mother of seven adult children, and a grandmother of four grandsons, Roz, and her husband, Kevin, live in Stockton, Ca with their youngest son, John, their three spirited dogs, and one very demanding cat. Tapestry of LoveColossians 2:2-4 “ I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God's great mystery. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else. And we've been shown the mystery! I'm telling you this because I don't want anyone leading you off on some wild-goose chase, after other so-called mysteries, or “the Secret.”I chose this verse for today because it is sort of a continuation of yesterday's verse. Yesterday, we talked about the secret surprise and how that secret was Jesus living within us. Today, we are talking about Jesus again. I also chose this verse because I loved the language used in it. I was going back and forth between this translation, which is the message translation, and the passion translation like I used yesterday. I think, overall, this translation explains this in a way that is easier to understand. The first sentence is the one I loved the most. Here is what is said in the passion translation, “I am contending for you that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love's fabric.” Isn't that a beautiful image? Our hearts are wrapped up in the comfort of heaven. That is wonderful. The message translation says, "I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God.” I loved this one, too, as picturing a tapestry of love is great imagery. It was also similar to the passion translation, which said, “woven together into love's fabric.” So, besides nice language and fancy imagery, what does this all mean? It begins by saying that we are in touch with everything there is to know about God. So, no big deal, right? I don't think he means that we need to actually know everything there is to know about God, as that is impossible. None of us could possibly know everything there is to know about God.The next line clarifies this a bit. It says, “Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God's great mystery.” Do you know who God is? Have you spent time in the scriptures, have you paid attention at church when they are reading the sacred Word of God? When you know who God is, you can be confident and at rest with the knowledge you have. You are confident because you know the truth. You can be confident because your eyes are focused on Jesus Christ. God has revealed this mystery to you and you are confident in this knowledge. This verse confirms that God's great mystery is Jesus. Just like we heard yesterday. The next line says, “All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else.” This is an important one for us to hear and remember. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in Jesus and nowhere else. This is important because we tend to look everywhere else. How many times have we looked to the world for wisdom and knowledge? How many times have we read books that have nothing to do with Jesus in search of wisdom and knowledge?I have found in my own life that I go to the Lord if I need prayers for something. If I need a miracle to happen, a mountain to be moved, someone I love to be healed, or things to go smoothly, I turn to the Lord and pray for His help. However, when I need wisdom and knowledge, I turn to books, and my go-to is not usually scripture. I will search online for books that have to do with the topic I'm struggling with. I ask friends or family what they think I should do. I didn't know that I could go to the Lord when I needed knowledge or wisdom. That may seem silly to you, and yet I don't think I am the only one that didn't know this.It wasn't until I went to the Encounter School of Ministry that I realized that if you needed wisdom and knowledge, you could go and sit with the Lord, and He would give it to you. What really cemented this in my mind was when I started to examine some of my favorite Saints. Saint Catherine of Sienna is a doctor of the church, and yet she did not have any formal education. She was one of the most brilliant theological minds of her day, and through her personal influence, thousands of people returned to the church. She did not spend time studying theology. She didn't spend time online researching all she could about the Lord and about Jesus. She went right to the source. She spent time with Jesus himself in her prayer time. She spent a long time in her room, just her and the Lord. St Thérèse of Lisieux was unable to attend a university or engage in systematic study. She died young; nevertheless, from this day forward, she will be honored as a doctor of the Church, an outstanding recognition that raises her in the esteem of the entire Christian community far beyond any academic title. She loved Jesus; she spent time in prayer with Him. She went to the Lord to gain all the wisdom and knowledge she needed. She relied on Jesus for everything, and He, in turn, gave her everything. She died at age 24. Can you imagine contributing so much to the world in your short 24 years here on earth that you become a doctor of the church? I barely knew who I was at 24, never mind being so sure of who God was at that time. These are just two examples of so many examples. If you look at a lot of the Saints, they weren't necessarily the most educated people, and yet they had so much knowledge. The verse above ends with, “I'm telling you this because I don't want anyone leading you off on some wild-goose chase, after other so-called mysteries, or “the Secret.” The Lord is where we can get our wisdom and knowledge. The world may try to convince us otherwise. They have plenty of things they are trying pass off to us as knowledge and wisdom. I think what this verse is telling us is that we can know if someone is leading us off on a wild goose chase if they are trying to tell us something that goes against Jesus and what He is telling us. If all knowledge and wisdom can be found in Him, then if something we learn contradicts what He is saying or what He stood for, then we know it is not the truth. If you need more wisdom and knowledge in your life, and let's be honest, who doesn't, then the answer is to spend more time sitting with the Lord and ask Him to give you the answers you are looking for. I have started a journal where I just ask the Lord, what would you like to tell me about… and then I usually pick a topic to put in. For instance, I have asked Him to give me more knowledge about His love and forgiveness. I have also asked about what He wanted to tell me about the sacramental graces in a marriage. I ask the Lord what He wants to tell me, and then I just write down whatever comes to my mind. I have really enjoyed it. I invite you to give it a try. If you have unanswered questions or you wish to have more knowledge in a certain area, sit with the Lord and ask Him to help you understand it better or fill you with more knowledge in that area. I am sure you will be surprised by what you hear when you sit and listen.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we thank you for being all we need. We thank you for filling us with wisdom and knowledge. Lord, we ask for more. We ask for more wisdom and more knowledge. A Sister of St. Thérèse: Servant of God, Léonie Martin - Bearer of Hope with Fr. Timothy Gallagher - Episode 14 We pick up with Léonie at the dawn of the 1930s, in an era where world events begin to collide cataclysmically.   She is writing to her older sister, Marie, about Pauline's jubilee and recalling challenging medical procedures. We also discuss the profound impact the teachings and writings of St. Francis de Sales and, to a lesser extent, St. Jane de Chantal and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque had on Léonie. Finally, Fr. Gallagher observes how the Salesian spirituality is very much in keeping with the "Little Way" of her sister, St. Therese, they are. Léonie then imparts profound insights to her sisters following a retreat, which still rings true for all of us today. “It is the love of God dwelling in our actions that makes us whole. It is love that keeps us sane.”~ Fr. Marc FoleyIt's the grand finale of our book club! In Episode 48, Kenna, Pat, and Fr. Nathan LaLiberte wrap up their discussion on The Love That Keeps Us Sane by Fr. Marc Foley. From personal anecdotes to spiritual insights, the trio navigates the challenges of showing true charity, letting go of expectations, and embracing the beauty of ordinary moments. It's appropriate that, in approaching a great saint who sought to do "small things with great love," we consider this small book with such great opportunities for transformation. Nathan LaLiberte to delve into the thought-provoking spiritual gem, The Love That Keeps Us Sane: Living the Little Way of St. Thérèse of Lisieux by Fr. Marc Foley, OCD. Drawing from the psychological and spiritual genius of St. Thérèse, they discuss the interplay between sanity and sanctity as a fruit of humility, the value of silence, and the complexities of human relationships. The conversation covers the perils of external validation, the significance of personal agency, and discerning what to share with others. As the trio reflects on the opportunities and struggles of seeking sanity and sanctity in a broken world, the conversation offers illuminating insights that touch on the intersection of faith, mental well-being, and everyday life. In this episode, we come to learn of "the pivotal moment" in the life of Léonie. Even with all of the physical and emotional issues suffered by Léonie, there seemed to be something more, a mystery as it were, that prevented Zélie from having a deep maternal relationship with her struggling daughter. Zélie would say that this inability to win the heart of this difficult daughter was for her "the greatest sorrow of her life." Since the death of Sr. Marie Dosithée (Élise Guérin), Zélie begged her beloved oldest sister to intercede for her in heaven in order to return her poor child's heart to her. At this same time Marie, her oldest daughter, having finished her time at boarding school was now home. Marie, who began to help with the care for her younger sisters, became aware of an alarming situation involving the maid Louise and her concealed abusive treatment of Léonie. She promptly informed her mother. Zélie, with this new knowledge and understanding, took immediate action. They might be able to teach her challenging daughter, but not all is what it appears to be with these two women.  There is also something of a mystery surrounding Zélie and Leonie's relationship.  What is preventing Zélie from breaking through to her daughter?  Then another sad death affects the family, while Zélie begins to experience her own health failing.  What will become of her poor Léonie? Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor begin a new series that reflects on the life of the "forgotten" sister of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Servant of God Léonie Martin.   Fr. Gallagher says, "Léonie's life holds a very important story because she was the forgotten one; she was the one who was in the last place; she was the one who was less gifted than the others. Today we would call her a ‘problem child', and we'll see that she certainly was the source of great anxiety to her parents, especially to her mother, Zélie, who loved her dearly." As a child, Léonie suffered from severe illnesses and physical maladies that would plague her entire life. She also struggled with understanding social clues and interactions, and with behaving appropriately. Conventional educational models of the day failed to meet her particular needs, and she was labeled "developmentally delayed". Yet those who knew her well described her as having a "heart of gold". Who was Léonie and what were her struggles? Why has her cause of canonization begun?  Father Gallagher, along with Kris McGregor,  answers these questions and explains why Léonie is "a bearer of hope” in this landmark series. Healing the heart is about memory and emotion. Whatever and wherever our painful memories and emotions from the past are, they influence our present and future through our inner child. Learning to love the demanding, controlling little you that still screams for attention and protection in your present and future can be challenging, but it is possible, and Jesus teaches it is necessary.  "Unless you become like little children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matt 18:3).
