We all saw it unfold in real time, some of us from our phones, others witnessing the devastation firsthand. Our beautiful, complicated, and geographically vast Los Angeles has been brought to its knees. Our heart goes out to everyone who finds themselves struggling and unmoored through all the types of loss, whether it be family, a home or a neighborhood. As the days have passed, one aspect of this tragedy has kept us going — the extraordinary kindness and generosity of the citizens of Los Angeles. This week, we speak with those affected by the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, and those who have selflessly stepped up to help. Wendy Escobedo of World Central Kitchen explains how the organization mobilizes — with a little help from chefs and restaurateurs like Roy Choi, Kim Prince, and Greg Dulan — to feed evacuees and first responders. Christine Moore, owner of Little Flower in Pasadena, fought flames in her neighborhood and is now feeding the community while navigating her own displacement. Dina Samson offers perspective on how the fires are impacting LA's already struggling hospitality industry. Teddy and Andy Leonard, owners of The Reel Inn in Malibu, look back on their restaurant, which succumbed to fire after 36 years of selling seafood on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Episode 97: "I found the secret of suffering in peace. . . . The one who says peace is not saying joy, or at least, felt joy. . . . To suffer in peace is enough to will all that Jesus wills. . . . To be the spouse of Jesus we must resemble Jesus, and Jesus is all bloody, he is crowned with thorns! . . ." - St. Thérèse of Lisieux (Letter 87) --- How dark did the darkness get for our little, meek, and humble St. Thérèse during her life here on earth? How can a saint rightfully referred to as "The Little Flower" relate to me in the darkness of my sufferings and trials? Tune in to this month's episode as author and host Julia Monnin unpacks briefly the tenacity of little Thérèse who, in her own trials of faith, had to learn "the secret of suffering in peace." --- "Don't believe that when I'm in heaven I'll let ripe plums fall into your mouths. This isn't what I had, nor what I desired. You will perhaps have great trials, but I'll send you lights which will make you appreciate and love them. You will be obliged to say like me: 'Lord, You fill us with joy with all the things You do for us.'" – St. Thérèse of Lisieux --- Learn more about the 5th Annual "The World Is Noisy - God Whispers"® Retreat at journeysrevealed.com/retreat --- theworldisnoisy.com | journeysrevealed.com

Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God's Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint?  Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, 33 Days to Merciful Love Henri Nouwen, quote Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Let's stay connected. Don't miss an episode. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor of the Church Lectionary: 456The Saint of the day is Saint Thrse of LisieuxSaint Thérèse of Lisieux's Story “I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.” These are the words of Thérèse of Lisieux, a Carmelite nun called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24. Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering a redemptive suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for priests.” And shortly before she died, she wrote: “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.” Thérèse was canonized in 1925. On October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized in light of her holiness and the influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church. Her parents, Louis and Zélie, were beatified in 2008 and canonized in 2015. Reflection Thérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the appearance, the “self.” We have become a dangerously self-conscious people, painfully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to serve others, to do something outside herself, to forget herself in quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that falls to the ground must die in order to live. Preoccupation with self separates modern men and women from God, from their fellow human beings, and ultimately from themselves. We must re-learn to forget ourselves, to contemplate a God who draws us out of ourselves, and to serve others as the ultimate expression of selfhood. These are the insights of Saint Thérèse, and they are more valid today than ever. Saint Thérèse is the Patron Saint of: FloristsMissionariesPilotsPriests Learn more about Saint Thérèse! Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897), popularly known as "the Little Flower" and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. She was a cloistered Carmelite Discalced nun who entered the Carmel of Lisieux at fifteen. She attained a high degree of holiness by carrying out her daily duties with perfect fidelity, having a childlike confidence in God's providence and merciful love. The Little Flower had a great love of the Church and a zeal for the conversion of souls. She prayed especially for priests and was always ready to be at the service of others. She died of consumption on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, and was canonized in 1925. She has never ceased to fulfill her promise: "I will pass my heaven in doing good on earth." Her interior life is revealed in her autobiography, Story of a Soul. In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church. In his Apostolic Exhortation On Christian Joy (Gaudete in Domino), Paul VI spoke of St. Thérèse in 1975. "In more recent times, St. Thérèse of Lisieux shows us the courageous way of abandonment into the hands of God to whom she entrusts her littleness. And yet it is not that she has no experience of the feeling of God's absence, a feeling which our century is harshly experiencing. This is the moment of perfect joy for the poor, weak little thing. What happiness for it to remain there nevertheless, and to gaze at the invisible light that hides from its faith." Today, we're delving into the inspiring life and teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux, exploring how her wisdom speaks to us as Catholic midlife women. St. Therese, also known as the Little Flower, offers profound insights that resonate deeply with the challenges and joys of our stage in life. Her "Little Way" teaches us to find holiness in simplicity and to approach our daily tasks with great love. I want to share with you five powerful lessons we can apply to our lives from the teachings and writings of St. Therese of Lisieux. Lesson One: The Little Way St. Therese's "Little Way" isn't just a spiritual concept; it's a practical path to holiness. She likened it to an elevator to holiness, finding that true spiritual elevation comes from embracing humility and small acts of love, rather than seeking worldly acclaim or success. St. Therese reminds us that less is often more and that simplicity and humility are crucial in our journey of faith. Lesson Two: Trust and Surrender St. Therese's life was marked by profound trust in God's plan, even amidst personal trials and suffering. She encourages us to surrender our worries and control, embracing God's loving providence. This trust doesn't mean being passive; it means actively choosing to believe that God is working for our good, even when circumstances seem difficult or uncertain. Lesson Three: Balancing Family, Career, and Faith Finding balance is a struggle many midlife women face. St. Therese reminds us that our daily duties, performed with love and devotion, are acts of worship. By integrating prayer and reflection into our routines, such as offering a quick prayer of gratitude while driving to work or setting aside a few moments for reflection before bed, we can find spiritual harmony amidst life's demands. Lesson Four: Overcoming Self-Doubt St. Therese's profound humility and confidence in God's unconditional love teach us that our worth isn't defined by achievements or societal standards. Rather, it comes from being cherished daughters of God, valued for who we are in His eyes. She encourages us to overcome self-doubt by recognizing our spiritual worth and embracing the truth that we are enough just as we are. Lesson Five: Creating a Legacy of Love Finally, St. Therese inspires us to create a legacy of love by passing on our faith to future generations. Whether through small acts of kindness or sharing stories of saints, we can instill values that endure beyond our lifetime. By modeling a faith-filled life and nurturing a love for God in our families, we ensure that our beliefs and values will continue to flourish in the hearts of those we touch. I encourage you to reflect on how St. Therese's teachings can enrich your life. Her "Little Way" invites us to find holiness in simplicity, trust in God's providence, balance our responsibilities with prayer, overcome self-doubt, and leave a legacy of faith and love. Rosie's writing is so profound and heartfelt. Her journal entries contain the same wisdom and insight that we often read from great saints in our church. Rosie fought the good fight until the very end of her time on earth. She lived her life in such a way that even now she continues to inspire and encourage others on their faith journey. Her witness and love of God even in the midst of pain and suffering offers hope and peace for anyone facing a difficult situation. If you need hope and to know that God works even in the midst of the storm...Rosie's story will inspire you to trust that Jesus is in control and to rely on him for his strength!
