Father Anthony with Tony, and Cristina gather to discuss the goings on, and people in the Parish. They comment on the summerlike weather we are experiencing. Father comments on having told couples getting married this fall that the couples had made good choice in choosing to marry in cooler months and here we are in a heatwave in October with temps in the 80's!  After prayer Father chats about his time at the school this morning, passing out rosaries to the students, seeing the celebration of Hispanic Heritage and sharing encounters with family members.  Father shares life details and the words of St. Therese-the Little Flower, her feast day was celebrated on October 1st. Given that October is the month of the rosary, Father speaks to this and encourages us to pray the rosary daily. REMINDERS: Father Anthony will celebrate the Blessing of the Animals at 10am tomorrow, Saturday October 4th and the Blue Mass at 10am on Sunday October the 19th in honor of our First Responders, all are welcome. Friends of the Rosary,Today is the feast of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (1873-1897), popularly known as "the Little Flower."St. Thérèse, a cloistered, discalced Carmelite nun, is the patroness of all foreign missions and the patroness of France. She died of consumption on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, and was canonized in 1925. In 1997, Pope St. John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church. Her interior life is revealed through her autobiography, "Story of a Soul.""The Little Flower" attained a high degree of holiness by carrying out her ordinary daily duties with perfect fidelity, having a childlike confidence in God's providence and merciful love. She was always ready to serve others at all times, prayed especially for the priests, and had a great love of the Church and a zeal for the conversion of souls. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God's Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend.  Open your Heart to our key Scripture.  2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint?  Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, 33 Days to Merciful Love Henri Nouwen, quote Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Let's stay connected. Don't miss an episode. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor of the Church Lectionary: 456The Saint of the day is Saint Thrse of LisieuxSaint Thérèse of Lisieux's Story “I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul.” These are the words of Thérèse of Lisieux, a Carmelite nun called the “Little Flower,” who lived a cloistered life of obscurity in the convent of Lisieux, France. And her preference for hidden sacrifice did indeed convert souls. Few saints of God are more popular than this young nun. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, is read and loved throughout the world. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24. Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse possessed that holy insight that redeems the time, however dull that time may be. She saw in quiet suffering a redemptive suffering, suffering that was indeed her apostolate. Thérèse said she came to the Carmel convent “to save souls and pray for priests.” And shortly before she died, she wrote: “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.” Thérèse was canonized in 1925. On October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be so recognized in light of her holiness and the influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church. Her parents, Louis and Zélie, were beatified in 2008 and canonized in 2015. Reflection Thérèse has much to teach our age of the image, the appearance, the “self.” We have become a dangerously self-conscious people, painfully aware of the need to be fulfilled, yet knowing we are not. Thérèse, like so many saints, sought to serve others, to do something outside herself, to forget herself in quiet acts of love. She is one of the great examples of the gospel paradox that we gain our life by losing it, and that the seed that falls to the ground must die in order to live. Preoccupation with self separates modern men and women from God, from their fellow human beings, and ultimately from themselves. We must re-learn to forget ourselves, to contemplate a God who draws us out of ourselves, and to serve others as the ultimate expression of selfhood. These are the insights of Saint Thérèse, and they are more valid today than ever. Saint Thérèse is the Patron Saint of: FloristsMissionariesPilotsPriests Learn more about Saint Thérèse!
