Christopher McLaughlin joins us from Glasgow, Scotland and is one of the people heading up the Cause for Tommy Burns, hoping that Tommy will eventually be declared a saint in the Catholic Church. Christopher is our guest on this episode and shares his experiences and knowledge about the quest for Tommy's sainthood that many are praying for. Tommy was a professional soccer player, which in Scotland and most of the world, is called football. Tommy was a footballer for the famous, and beloved, Celtic team in Glasgow from 1975 to 1989 and later coached and managed the team. Tommy died in May of 2008 at the young age of 51 of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. He left behind his wife and four children. Christopher has a wealth of knowledge about Tommy, his life, and his humble and deep devotion to God and the Catholic faith. Christopher shares some history of Catholicism in Scotland and how it is intertwined with Celtic football. Tommy was very pious and humbly practiced corporal works of mercy throughout his life. According to Christopher, the love for Tommy was very apparent at his funeral, which included 40 priests and an estimated 20,000+ people. Christopher describes the process of opening a Cause for Sainthood according to the Church's Canon Law. The first step involves the bishop of the diocese where Tommy passed away. The final step, which could be a few years to hundreds of years away, culminates in the Pope declaring the person a saint. There are many steps and an enormous amount of prayer, research, and verification prior to a Pope declaring someone a saint. Opening a Cause for Sainthood does not guarantee Canonization, it often does not. Christopher, and his fellow researcher Philip Church, are the “petitioners” in this process (see sainthood link below). They are asking for anyone who knew Tommy or is praying for an intercession from Tommy to contact them at contact@tommyburns.org Information about the process of sainthood in the Catholic Church: Saints | USCCB #catholicsports, #tommyburns, #celticfootball
In this lecture, Bible teacher Dave Bigler (founder of Iron Sheep Ministries) does a basic overview of the history of our New Testament text. This Bible study session is led by Pastor Anthony Uvenio, who emphasizes the importance of prayer and invoking the Holy Spirit before studying the Scriptures. The study guide uses the letter P for steps, but not all steps are necessary every time, especially with Paul's letters. He highlights Paul's significant role in early Christianity, his conversion from persecutor to apostle, and his theological contributions through epistles to Titus and Timothy, known as the Pastoral Epistles. The lesson includes the qualifications for church elders, the concept of saints, and the importance of good works as evidence of true faith. Pastor Anthony contrasts the Roman Catholic process of canonization with Paul's definition of saints as believers set apart by God. #biblestudy #paultheapostle #titus #christianfaith #reformedtheology #goodworks #holyspirit #scripturestudy #faithandworks #spiritualgrowth 00:03:47 - Paul's Letters and Their Significance 00:07:20 - Conversion and Mission of Paul 00:09:36 - Steps for Effective Bible Study 00:10:49 - Paul's Epistles and Church Leadership 00:14:17 - Servant of the Lord Explained 00:18:14 - Paul's Apostleship and Miraculous Signs 00:21:58 - Understanding Apostles and Saints 00:25:51 - Roman Catholic Sainthood Process 00:29:58 - Critique of Canonization and Faith 00:44:31 - Speaker 4's Declaration of Faith Video: https://youtu.be/Iy9JnsIKUh0 www.ReformedRookie.com Podcast: https://anchor.fm/reformedrookie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheReformedRookie Twitter: https://twitter.com/NYapologist Semper Reformanda!

Join Msgr. John Esseff as he reflects on his experiences with Mother Teresa on the eve of her canonization! Several of the stories he has not shared on any of his previous programs. Rather than be "admirers" of Mother Teresa, Msgr. Esseff asks all of us to pray to become "imitators" of this little one of God's children who has now become one of His great saints! Carrier of God's Tender Love and Mercy Lord Jesus, merciful Face of the Father, you came to give us the Good News of the Father's mercy and tenderness. We thank you for the gift of our dearest Mother, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, who will be canonized in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. You chose her to be your presence, your love and compassion to the brokenhearted, the unwanted, the abandoned and the dying. She responded wholeheartedly to your cry, ‘I Thirst,' by the holiness of her life and humble works of love to the poorest of the poor. We pray, through her intercession, for the grace to experience your merciful love and share it in our own families, communities and with all our suffering brothers and sisters. Help us to give our “hearts to love and hands to serve” after the example of Mother Teresa. Lord Jesus, bless every member of our family, our parish, our diocese, our country, especially those most in need, that we all may be transformed by your merciful love. Amen. Finding Your Own Treasure and Field. A Spiritual Lesson For All of Us! In the process of Beatification and the process of Canonization there are factors for one to be called Blessed or called a Saint. One of the factors is Joy. If a Blessed or Saint candidate does not have the virtue of Joy, the candidacy is abandoned. Why? Because, within Holiness, we find Joy! Holiness and Joy are connected. That is why when we read the stories of the martyrs, we understand they have faith. But their faith shines through with Joy! Holiness is connected to Joy! When we speak of Joy, we are not talking about laughter. It is possible for people to laugh but have no Joy! Parables of the Kingdom of God In today's Gospel we hear of two parables about the Kingdom of God. The first parable is the pearl within the field. The merchant goes off and buys the field in order to possess the treasure. The merchant sells all that he has, to possess the treasure. We may have heard this parable often enough and glance by it. However, the Homily explains the connection between the treasure and the field. What is the treasure that gives us Joy, peace, and contentment? It is Our Lord Jesus Christ! This is true. But what is the field? What is its connection? For all that have a special devotion, there is a spiritual lesson for all of us! Listen to this Meditation Media. The canonization of the first millennial saint has sparked calls for a queer saint. For some, Father Mychal Judge, New York City Fire Department chaplain and the first certified 9/11 casualty, is at the center of these calls. Antonio Pagliarulo, writer and author of The Evil Eye: The History, Mystery & Magic of the Quiet Curse (Weiser Books, 2023), makes the case.
Dynamic Repetition: History and Messianism in Modern Jewish Thought (Brandeis UP, 2022) proposes a new understanding of modern Jewish theories of messianism across the disciplines of history, theology, and philosophy. The book explores how ideals of repetition, return, and the cyclical occasioned a new messianic impulse across an important swath of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German Jewish thought. To grasp the complexities of Jewish messianism in modernity, the book focuses on diverse notions of “dynamic repetition” in the works of Franz Rosenzweig, Walter Benjamin, Franz Kafka, and Sigmund Freud, and their interrelations with basic trajectories of twentieth-century philosophy and critical thought. Gilad Sharvit is an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Towson University. A scholar of modern Jewish thought, Sharvit's interests lie in Jewish philosophy, German-Jewish literature and culture, German and continental philosophy, psychoanalysis and critical theory. He completed his PhD studies at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the Philosophy Department and later accepted a Diller Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Center for Jewish Studies at University of California, Berkeley (2014-16) and was a Townsend Fellow at the Townsend Center for the Humanities at University of California, Berkeley (2016-17). In 2017-18, Professor Sharvit was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Koebner Minerva Center for German History (Hebrew University) and at Tel Aviv University (Minerva Center for German History and School of Philosophy). Professor Sharvit is the author of Therapeutics and Salvation: Freud and Schelling on Freedom (Magnes Press) (in Hebrew) and co-editor and contributing author of the volumes Freud and Monotheism: The Violent Origins of Religion with Karen Feldman (Fordham University Press, 2018) and Canonization and Alterity: Heresy in Jewish History, Thought, and Literature with Willi Goetschel (De Gruyter, 2020). Amir Engel is a professor at the German Department of the Hebrew University and currently also a visiting professor for the history and present of Jewish-Christian relations at the Theological Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin. Patrick takes a close look at a significant development from the U.S. House of Representatives, which recently approves a major amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. This new change means automatic draft registration for all males aged 18 to 26, making a shift from the previous voluntary sign-up system that's been in place since 1980. Patrick explores the potential implications of this amendment, the historical context behind selective service, and even touches on some poignant reflections about the draft's impact on American families. He also discusses the controversial idea of expanding draft registration to women and how this could reshape the understanding of military obligations. Military Draft Coming? House Passes Measure To Automatically Register Men For Selective Service (04:27) U.S. Bishops Affirm Advancement of a Cause of Beatification and Canonization for Adele Brise, Lay Woman (15:59) John (email) – I used to think that serving in the military was noble. As I get older, I see the evils of war and I don't want my grandchildren joining the military. (24:46) Alan - They are drafting because they realize that they can't get the Ukrainian young men to sign up (28:10) John - The thing we forget is that if someone refuses to be drafted, the government can send them to jail. We might not have a choice. (35:50) John - If you apply for a government job and you didn't apply for selective service, they won't hire you. (45:15)

What is the SSPX?The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood.Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls.Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.https://sspx.org
