"Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain's Journey," a powerful new documentary film co-produced by Paulist Productions, will be in select theaters around the United States on November 8, 2024. In this episode of Deacons Pod, the deacons speak about the film with Paulist Fr. Tom Gibbons, vice president of Paulist Productions and an executive producer of "Fighting Spirit." The film shares the stories of multiple U.S. military chaplains who died while serving. It is framed by the story of Justin Roberts, a former U.S. Army chaplain, as he attends the long-delayed funeral in 2021 of Servant of God Emil Kapaun, a priest and U.S. Army chaplain from Kansas, who died in 1953 as prisoner of war in North Korea. “Fighting Spirit” was co-produced by the U.S. Army Chaplains Corps. Actor Chris Pratt also is an executive producer on the project. ABOUT THE SHOW: Deacons Pod is a podcast for everyone. For our first episode of Season 7, we are humbled to welcome Fr. Tom Greene, SJ, the Provincial of the U.S. Central and Southern Province of the Jesuits. Fr. Greene was the one who first conceived of this mission to the U.S.-Mexico border in south Texas over three years ago. In this episode, he shares the origin story of this mission and what inspired the idea to send Jesuits to the border to try something new. Before becoming a Jesuit, Fr. Greene went to law school and practiced as a lawyer, so he also talks about the ways he has put his legal background to use in his Jesuit life. Speaking of trying something new, the border is marked by changes in policy that can often come suddenly and unexpectedly, requiring new ways of responding. Brian talks about an Executive Order from June 4th and how that impacted the ability to help vulnerable cases. He shares the story of Juan, Francy, and their kids who missed their CBP One appointment in April because they were kidnapped. They had to restart the process, and are still waiting for a new appointment all these months later. Joe talks about one of the recent fraud updates for the CBP One app that requires every member of a travel group over 14 years old to take a live photo to confirm an appointment. Sounds like a good idea, until you hear the case of Breanne and Maylene that shows how a change in policy can have devastating unexpected consequences. Have you ever met someone so passionate about something that you just couldn't help getting excited about it, too? That was host Mike Jordan Laskey's experience when he first met Fr. Tom Curran, SJ, today's guest. Fr. Curran, who served as the president of Rockhurst University in Kansas City for 16 years, is now the coordinator of the Jesuit Prison Education Network (JPEN). Through participation in JPEN, nine different Jesuit institutes of higher learning offer college courses and degree programs -- taught by their own college/university professors -- at correctional facilities around the country. The programs are open to both those who are incarcerated and prison staff members, and Fr. Curran has some incredible stories about how the programs have changed the students and teachers lives and even the cultures of the correctional facilities themselves. In the conversation, Fr. Curran describes some of the ways our criminal justice system is dehumanizing and how prison education is a prophetic statement against that reality. He also talks about how Ignatian spirituality inspires his work and shared some of the most powerful stories from the JPEN programs.
