With MLB's changes to the 2023 season has seen a resurgence in aggressive base running and stolen bases. It's not yet back to the levels seen in the seventies and eighties, but a new dimension has returned to the diamond. Which leads us to the Athletics' Bert Campaneris. In the eight years between 1965 and 1972, Campaneris led the American League in Stolen Bases for six of those years. When he retired, he was seventh in career steals with 649 and is currently sitting 14th in the all-time table. Let's not forget the records he holds at the A's, career games played (1795), hits (1882) and at bats (7180). A true legend. Today's classic baseball game is early in the 1968 season, a season which would see the Athletics posting their first winning season since 1952. It's mid April as they welcome the Orioles to the Coliseum. Campaneris is happily playing at shortstop at the top of the batting order. Al Helfer and Monte Moore split commentating duties behind the microphone. You can find the boxscore here. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/OAK/OAK196804170.shtml This game was played on April 17th, 1968. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

The Book of Joe Podcast beings with hosts Tom Verducci and Joe Maddon exploring some of the rule changes coming to baseball this season. Joe really likes one rule specifically and thinks it should've happened a long time ago. Tom feels like 'pace' of the game is more important than how long the game takes. How long does Tom think it will take for players to adjust to the changes? With the shift no longer being allowed, Joe is curious to see if it changes pitching at all. We wrap up with the one statistic that Tom expects to see have an increase this season after these rule changes and the recent music playlist that helped Joe through a tough spot while traveling. The Book of Joe Podcast is a production of iHeart Radio. #fsr #dpshowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With over 40 years of coaching experience, it is an honor to have on a legend in this weeks episode, Mike Roberts. Mike and I met this past season in spring training when I was working for the Baltimore Orioles organization. I instantly felt a connection with Mike and enjoyed picking his brain on all of the intricacies in the game. He spent 23 years as the head coach at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. During the summer he is the head coach for the Cotuit Kettlers in the Cape Cod League. In this episode, we talk a lot about stealing bases, summer baseball, and scoring runs. Mike is well known throughout the country as being innovative when it comes to stealing bases. Mike's son, Brian, played 13 years in the MLB and used his Dad's methods to steal bases throughout his entire career.
