Big-name veteran Orlando Brown Jr. is one of the most talked-about potential cap casualties for the Bengals. Brown is an elite left tackle with multiple Pro Bowls on his résumé and remains a cornerstone of Cincinnati's offensive line, but his contract carries a very heavy cap hit (nearly $22 M in 2026) with limited savings if he's cut without a post-June designation. That makes him an unlikely cut in a vacuum — the Bengals protect Joe Burrow at all costs — but it also makes Brown one of the few marquee players whose salary structure could make the team at least explore ways to create cap space (like restructuring or tagging a successor) if Cincinnati finds itself tight against the cap in the coming offseason. On the defensive front, B.J. Hill and T.J. Slaton both have contracts that could draw scrutiny, but they are less likely to be cut purely for performance reasons. Hill just re-signed a multi-year deal, is a veteran starter inside and a locker-room leader, and anchors the defensive tackle rotation. Slaton, signed on a two-year deal in 2025, brings run-stuffing size and depth to a unit that needs bodies. Both have roles in the defensive interior, and the Bengals historically value continuity at the line. Finally, Oren Burks was brought in on a two-year contract to add experience to a linebacking corps in transition. While he's not a marquee name, Burks' role could be in jeopardy if younger players like Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter continue to progress and the team pursues cap savings — linebacker is traditionally easier to replace through the draft or cheaper free-agent signings. In summary, Brown's salary makes him the most intriguing “cut candidate” from a cap perspective, even if it's unlikely in practice; Hill and Slaton are more likely to stick due to role and continuity; and Burks' spot could be in play if the Bengals pivot toward youth or cheaper alternatives. On September 24, 2025, a fired-up crowd of 30,725 watched in stunned silence as the Pittsburgh Pirates snatched a 4-3 victory in the 11th, delivering a dagger to Cincinnati's NL wild-card hopes. Tied with Arizona and just one game behind the Mets entering the night, the Reds now stare at a precarious half-game deficit with only five contests left—a loss that feels like the backbreaker in a season of tantalizing what-ifs. The evening began as a pitcher's duel for the ages, pitting Reds ace Hunter Greene against Pirates phenom Paul Skenes, the NL Cy Young frontrunner. Greene, battling for his 8th win, scattered five hits over six innings, allowing two earned runs while fanning seven. But Skenes was untouchable, surrendering just four hits in six scoreless frames, whiffing seven and etching his name in franchise lore with his 211th strikeout—a Pirates record for a righty. Pittsburgh scratched out a 2-0 lead in the second on Bryan Reynolds' RBI single and Oneil Cruz's sacrifice fly, quieting the home faithful. Hope ignited in the eighth. Down 2-0, Noelvi Marte unleashed chaos with his first career inside-the-park homer, a liner off the wall that caromed wildly into left-center, allowing him to circle the bases untouched. The GABP erupted. Then, in the ninth, Tyler Stephenson crushed a solo shot off closer Dennis Santana, knotting it at 2-2 and forcing extras. "Stephenson's blast was pure adrenaline," Reds manager Terry Francona said postgame. "We had momentum." But baseball's heartless script twisted in the 10th. Jack Suwinski's RBI double plated the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Pirates edge. The Reds clawed back on Gavin Lux's sacrifice fly, tying it once more at 3-3. Agony peaked in the 11th: Spencer Horwitz's leadoff double scored Reynolds—his third run of the night—for a 4-3 lead. Cincinnati loaded the bases with two outs, hearts pounding, only for Marte to ground into a momentum-crushing force out against Yohan Ramirez. Final out. Ballgame over. Craig Sandlin and Cory Phillips discuss the Milwaukee Brewers extending their franchise-record winning streak to 14 games, defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in a thrilling 11-inning contest at Great American Ball Park. The Reds took an early 2-0 lead in the first with home runs from Spencer Steer and Noelvi Marte off Brewers starter Quinn Priester. Milwaukee responded, tying the game in the fourth on Christian Yelich's single and Sal Frelick's sacrifice fly. The Reds surged ahead 4-2 in the sixth with Ke'Bryan Hayes' solo homer and an error-aided run. The Brewers rallied in the ninth, tying it at 4-4 with William Contreras' single and Brice Turang's sacrifice fly. In the 10th, Jackson Chourio's solo homer off Joe La Sorsa gave Milwaukee a 5-4 lead. Trevor Megill secured his 30th save, despite a Reds threat. Yelich went 2-for-4, continuing his hot streak. Reds starter Zack Littell pitched six innings, allowing two runs, but defensive errors by Gavin Lux and T.J. Friedl proved costly. The Reds, now 64-60, fell further in the NL Wild Card race, while the Brewers improved to 78-44, solidifying their NL Central lead.

The Pirates tied it in the fourth with Oneil Cruz's RBI double. In the sixth, Tyler Stephenson's RBI double put the Reds ahead 2-1. Dennis Santana sealed the win with a scoreless ninth, earning the save. The Reds had eight hits, including three doubles, but stranded runners, posting a .242 average and .639 OPS. The Pirates capitalized on their five hits, with Reynolds' triple proving decisive.The loss underscored Cincinnati's struggles in tight games, while Pittsburgh's timely hitting and bullpen work secured the victory, highlighting the intensity of this divisional rivalry.
