What a weekend it was to be at Target Field!Twins ace Joe Ryan got the 2-1 pitcher's duel win over National League All-Star starter and Cy Young candidate Paul Skenes in front of a sellout crowd, followed by a one-hour concert from still-jacked 50-year-old Nelly in front of a still-amped throng. While Happy Hour host John Gaskins attended that, his Nobody's Listening Anyway co-host Matt Zimmer had the fortune the next day of witnessing Byron Buxton hit a 427-foot home run to complete the cycle on Byron Buxton Bobblehead Day.These awesome experiences, plus Buxton's appearances in Monday's Home Run Derby and Tuesday's MLB All-Star game, lead off a midsummer's daydream full of baseball and football conversation from the Gateway Lounge in Sioux Falls. Is Buxton one of the very best players in all of baseball? Can we enjoy this joyride he is on or is it still bittersweet considering so much of his talent has been squandered via injuries?Meanwhile, the Sioux Falls Canaries have six players in their league's All-Star game next week, with two of them up-and-coming local talents from Augustana (Jordan Barth) and USF (Josh Rehwaldt), the latter who Zimmer things should have gotten a call to join an MLB operation by now. While baseball is in midseason form, Alabama coach and USF player/coaching alumnus Kalen DeBoer stopped in Sioux Falls last week for a few speaking engagements before heading to Atlanta for SEC Media Days this week. Zimmer walks through his takeaways, including the connective tissue of DeBoer's 67-3 tear while head coach at USF to year two leading Fresno State, Washington, and now the Crimson Tide.Meanwhile, you can watch and hear Happy Hour's one-on-one with DeBoer from last May here.

Kurt Kitayama finished a sizzling weekend with a final-round 65 to win the 3M Open on Sunday, beating Sam Stevens by one stroke for his second PGA TOUR victory.Kitayama, who shot a career-best and tournament-record-tying 60 on Saturday to enter the final round within one of the leaders, birdied six of the first eight holes to build a cushion on a 91-degree afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities.“Getting off to a start like that kind of helps settle you down,” Kitayama said. “Final round, second-to-last group, theres definitely some nerves.”Joe Ryan delivered his worst start in nearly two months during a 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals and Byron Buxton exited Saturday night's game because of left side soreness. It was a tough day for the Twins' two All-Star players, and an ugly performance for a struggling team attempting to stay afloat in the wild-card standings.“We've been playing some pretty good fundamental baseball,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “Today was not that.”Buxton didn't return to the field after the sixth inning, but Baldelli said Buxton was “relatively upbeat” when they chatted during the game. Buxton, who made a leaping catch at the center field wall in the first inning, will undergo medical imaging Sunday morning. Send us a textComing out of the All-Star Break, the Minnesota Twins give Colorado Rockies fans something of a surprise: a series victory for the Coors Field faithful. It's a disappointing series for the Twins, who fall three games under .500 and waste a chance to do better following what was an exciting pair of performances by Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan in Atlanta earlier in the week. David wonders whether Ryan has reached legitimate ace status, while Dan is eager to see the Twins shake up the roster by releasing one player and demoting another. Dan also praises Rocco Baldelli for his off-day management, but David is confused about Rocco's pinch-hitting choices. Sal is on fire about the MLB trade deadline, specifically lambasting the Yankees' perceived needs and potential targets. He dismisses Eugenio Suarez as a fit, arguing the Yankees don't need another high-strikeout power hitter. Instead, Sal stresses the Yankees should prioritize bolstering their bullpen and starting rotation, and finding a defensive third baseman who can put the ball in play, even suggesting a move for Peraza to shortstop. He also expresses disbelief at Byron Buxton's decision to not waive his no-trade clause, calling him a "loser" for wanting to stay with the Twins.

The 4th of July has passed, but there will be some fireworks in Atlanta in just a few days as one of the most electrifying events in baseball takes center stage. The Home Run Derby. A stacked field will arrive at Truist Park ready to put on a show. The eight contestants consist of Cal Raleigh, James Wood, Junior Caminero, Byron Buxton, Brent Rooker, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Oneil Cruz and Ronald Acuña Jr. Jake and Jordan have been bursting with excitement for this year's Derby, and now they break down the field and ultimately pick a winner. While those home run hitters are preparing to show off their power, the next great home run hitters might be waiting to hear their names called as the MLB Draft is just a couple of days away. The Washington Nationals have the number one pick, and coming off of a recent franchise overhaul, with the firing of their long-time GM and manager, they hope to take someone who will help carry them into the future. Jake and Jordan discuss this and chat about names to look out for in the 2025 MLB Draft.
