Episode nine focuses on Chicks Dig Scars by Wormhole. Formed in the early 90s the band were a three-piece from Ringsend in Dublin and in 1994 released Chicks Dig Scars, their debut album, on Dead Elvis Records. Wormhole were Graham Blackmore and twins Anto and Dave Carroll. Graham played guitar and sang, Dave played the drums and sang, and Anto played the bass guitar. Wormhole became The Wormholes and to tell the band's story I'm joined by Graham and Anto, Eamonn Crudden (Dead Elvis), Marc Carolan (producer) and Stephen Rennicks (a longtime friend and archivist of the band and one of the writers of the sleevenotes of the new Wormholes anthology). Dave passed away in 2019 and this episode is dedicated to his memory.
One of the best films about being in a band, wanting to be in a band, and the creative process in general. Directed by Lenny Abramson. Written by Jon Ronson & Peter Straughan inspired by the life of Chris Sievey. Music by Stephen Rennicks. Starring Domhnall Gleason, Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy, François Civil & Carla Azar How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: “Frank” has everything that made director Lenny Abramson's “Room” so great. The deeply felt performances. The earthy sense of place. But “Frank” is a million times more fun, and the music from Steven Rennicks is great! Are you normal people? Well, if so (and even if not) this two part episode discussion on the BBC+Hulu miniseries Normal People is just for you! Based on a book of the same name by Sally Rooney, we dive deep into the world of this character driven miniseries as well as the book. We talk passionately about Marianne, Connell and their romance for hours. No, we're not kidding, we had a lot to say and even now we feel like we left some things out. Since we had so much on our mind we decided to divide our discussion into two separate parts and subchapters. Unfortunately we did not have the time to dedicate an entire subchapter to Connell's chain but there's always 2021. Structure: 00:00 - Introduction 01:53 - Quick Catch-Up 04:46 - Main discussion - Normal People (spoiler free discussion) 30:18 - Marianne (spoilers) Songs: Opening, Normal People Original Score by Stephen Rennicks Connell Messed Up, Normal People Original Score by Stephen Rennicks Audio Clip from Normal People, Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne and Paul Mescal as Connell HNY, Normal People Original Score by Stephen Rennicks
Stephen Rennicks is the man behind the music on all of Lenny Abrahamson's films - like Garage and Frank, as well as his recent TV work on Normal People. On this week's episode we chat to him about his career, working in film, his directorial ambitions and more. Plus - Aoife and Lauren chat about the Irish films Frank and Aidan Walsh: Master of the Universe. And as always, we give out a code for you to watch an Irish film on Volta.ie for FREE. This is our final episode of our Volta.ie miniseries. Sponsored by Volta.ie but all opinions are ours.
In this third episode, host Stephen Boylan chats with award-winning musician Stephen Rennicks about composing for film and TV and his work on TV smash Normal People, while broadcaster Aedín Gormley chats through some of her favourite movie music.
As quarantine continues, it's a welcome return to Soundtracking for Lenny, who joined us back in episode 107 from the BFI to discuss The Little Stranger. Lenny's most recent project is Hulu's adaptation of Sally Rooney's fantastic novel, Normal People, which will be available in full via the BBC iPlayer from April 27th. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, it's a beautifully pitched coming-of-age tale that tells the story of Marianne and Connell as they navigate a relationship during their school and university years. As well as featuring loads of cracking needle-drops, Normal People is scored by Lenny's longtime collaborator, Stephen Rennicks.

The latest episode of Soundtracking finds us out and about once more, this time at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank. And it's a truly stellar cast. Director Lenny Abrahamson, composer Stephen Rennicks, editor Nathan Nugent and producer Gail Egan joined Edith in front of an audience to discuss the music of their latest film, The Little Stranger. Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Waters, the plot follows a doctor who visits an old house his mother used to work at, only to discover it may hold a dark secret. As you'll hear, there's a bit more talking and a bit less music than we usually serve up, but what the gang has to say makes for essential listening if you have even the the remotest interest in film-making. Now one of the reasons it was such a joy speaking to Lenny, Stephen, Nathan and Gail is that they brought along all sorts of exclusive clips to share with us, including alternative beginnings and rough cuts from The Little Stranger. Obviously you won't be able to see these clips, but we've included the audio anyway to give you a sense of how much thought the team puts into every single frame. The guys also set up each clip in detail to give you a sense of what's going on. Hopefully, your imagination will do the rest.
SPOILER: Reviewing movies, books & TV shows in their entirety
In a prestigious special episode of Spoiler, the rest of the team stand down to allow Rachael a whole show in which to explore her passion for the composers without whom the films and TV shows we love so much would not be half as effective. Having made her point by imagining a world in which Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ was scored by Vangelis, Rachael probes further into the world of score composition in interviews with Classic FM composer in residence Debbie Wiseman (‘Wolf Hall’, ‘Dickensian’), American composer Deborah Lurie (‘An Unfinished Life’, ‘Safe Haven’) and Stephen Rennicks, whose regular collaborations with director Lenny Abrahamson include award-winning scores for ‘Frank’ and ‘Room’. Among other insights, Rachael discusses her guest’s proudest achievements among their own compositions and whether they consider composing to be a vocation. She receives invaluable advice on how to approach the challenge of getting into the business and on maintaining that all-important balance between artistic freedom and commercial success. Elsewhere, Rachael discovers to her horror that Stephen Rennicks is not overly found of the music he composed for ‘Room’ and takes him to task over this audacious heresy! The Spoiler Composer Special is also the perfect opportunity to hear rousing excerpts from the scores that have so inspired Rachael and millions of other film, TV and music enthusiasts. Incidentally, if you enjoy the music in the show, we've put together a Spotify playlist of all the featured tracks.
SPOILER: Reviewing movies, books & TV shows in their entirety
“I’m watching you” This week we’re watching series one of Channel 4 and AMC’s sci-fi drama ‘Humans’ and for the first time in months the Spoiler team are a house divided. While Rachael finds the series gripping and thought-provoking to the extent that she spends entire evenings mulling it over, Andy arrives with a laundry list of pernickety issues which he wants to go through “systematically”. Meanwhile, Paul is still enjoying that marvellous view from the fence. While the team manage to find some common ground, things get particularly heated in relation to the quality of acting in the series and Rachael and Andy turn in their own auditions for the roles of Mia and Leo respectively. Suspicions are raised that producer Jonny might be conducting a dual affair with both Andy and a home-made Gemma Chan synth and Paul wonders why, with all this talk of robots, no-one has seen fit to mention Metal Mickey. Elsewhere in a packed show, Rachael reveals her top 5 sympathetic synthetics and Andy takes a look at the underappreciated art of the TV recap sequence. Also, Rachael trails her upcoming Spoiler Score Special, in which she’ll be talking to film and TV composers including Stephen Rennicks, Debbie Wiseman and Deborah Lurie. This week’s scale: Will we be watching series 2?
Room is out on DVD and BluRay on Monday. I love the film which and its wonderfully understated score by Stephen Rennicks.

This Bantercast follows on from last week's episode with Jon Ronson who talked at great length about Frank Sidebottom and the true story which inspired the forthcoming 'Frank' film. This time around, we’re delighted to welcome the film’s director Lenny Abrahamson, actor Domhnall Gleeson and music composer Stephen Rennicks who joined us last Thursday May 1 to talk about all things Frank.
