Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an séú lá déag de mhí an Mhárta. Is mise Gráinne Ní Bhrosnacháin. Bhain Cillian Murphy éacht amach nuair a bhuaigh sé Gradam Oscar don aisteoir fireann is fearr dá ról mar J Robert Oppenheimer. Ba é an chéad uair riamh a bhuaigh duine a rugadh in Éirinn an gradam seo. Scannán beathaisnéise atá ann, a stiúir agus a léirigh Christopher Nolan faoin bhfisiceoir a chruthaigh an buama adamhach. D'éirigh leis an scannán seacht nOscar ar fad a fháil. Agus é ag glacadh leis an ngradam dúirt Cillian go raibh sé an-tógtha ar fad. Ghabh sé buíochas le Nolan, an criú agus a chomhréalta, lena thuismitheoirí agus clann. Dúirt sé go bhfuilimid inár gcónaí i ndomhan Oppenheimer, agus thiomnaigh sé an gradam do na daoine a dheánann síocháin. Labhair sé i nGaeilge chomh maith nuair a dúirt sé 'go raibh míle maith agaibh' ag deireadh a óráide. Is as Corcaigh ó dhúchas Cillian Murphy agus tá gach éinne ina cheantar agus timpeall na hÉireann an-bhródúil as. Bhuaigh an comhlacht leiriúcháin Element Pictures ó Bhaile Átha Cliath ceithre ghradam don scannán ‘Poor Things' ina bhfuil an t-aisteoir Emma Stone, a bhuaigh an gradam don aisteoir baineann is fearr. Tá an t-iriseoir iomráiteach agus comhfhreagraí nuachta Charlie Bird tar éis bás a fháil. Le linn daichead bliain mar iriseoir, thug Charlie Bird tuairiscí ar roinnt scéalta tábhachtacha in Éirinn agus go hidirnáisiúnta, lena n-áirítear tine Stardust, seachaint cánach sa Bhanc Éireannach Náisiúnta, na hionsaithe sceimhlitheoireachta i Meán Fómhair 2001 agus an súnámaí san Aigéan Indiach in 2004. Thosnaigh sé amach mar thaighdeoir le RTÉ in 1974 agus bhí cáil air mar dhuine díograiseach agus seiftiúil ar na cláracha Seven Days agus an Late Late Show agus ansin ag glacadh páirt le cúrsaí nuachta ó 1980 ar aghaidh. Sa bhliain 2021 deineadh diagnóis go raibh an galar néarón luadrach air. Chuaigh sé os comhar an phobail leis an ngalar agus thosnaigh sé an feachtas Climb With Charlie. D'eagraigh sé a luaithreach bheith curtha in Inis Oírr, áit ar thug sé cuairt uirthi go minic le breis is caoga bliain. Thaistil an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar go dtí na Stáit Aontaithe le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig. Chaith sé dhá lá ar thuras go Bostún. Bhuail sé le Gobharnóir Massachusetts, Maura Healey, agus dhein sé óráid i Leabharlann John F. Kennedy. Ar an Aoine bhuail sé leis an Leasuachtarán Kamala Harris agus bhí cruinniú déthaobhach aige leis na Uachtarán Joe Biden. Dúirt an Taoiseach go mbainfeadh sé úsáid as an ardán atá aige chun béim a chur ar shos cogaidh sa Mheánoirthear. Ina chuid óráidí i mBostún agus in Washington, tharraing sé aird ar an ionsaí uafásach a dhein Hamas ar Iosrael ar an 7ú lá de mhí Dheireadh Fómhair chomh maith leis an tubaiste atá ag tarlú faoi láthair in Gaza. Cillian Murphy looks unbeatable for the Best Actor gong. But who else should win at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night? And who will win?Irish Times chief film correspondent Donald Clarke says that it's shaping up to be Oppenheimer's year at the Oscars. But what about Barbie? And could Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things, produced by Dublin-based Element Pictures, also do well? This time last year Irish hopes were high with The Banshees of Inisherin getting nine nominations - on the night it lost out in all its categories. Could the same happen to Poor Things with its 11 nods? The organisers will be nervous about any break in the relative silence about the Gaza conflict that has persisted throughout awards season. It might, says Clarke, just be time for an award winner to break the silence - once the statuette is safely in their hands. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. Hosted on Acast. Dúirt Yulia Navalny, baintreach Alexei, gur nimhíodh Navalny leis an néaroibreán, Novichok, agus gurb é seo an fáth nach bhfuil a chorp scaoilte go fóill. This week my guest is producer Jeanie Igoe.  Jeanie's big break came when she landed a role at A24, where her credits as a production executive include Barry Jenkins' MOONLIGHT, Trey Edwards Shults', IT COMES AT NIGHT, Bo Burnham's EIGHTH GRADE and Robert Eggers' THE LIGHTHOUSE. She also served as a producer on their TV series RAMY, and a co-producer on David Lowery's THE GREEN KNIGHT. She then launched herself as an independent producer, with her first project MISS JUNETEENTH, the directorial debut from Channing Godfrey Peoples going on to premiere at Sundance and receive a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. Most recently, Jeanie co-produced CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS alongside Catherine Magee and the team at Element Pictures, including former podcast guest Emma Norton and Development Producer Chelsea Morgan Hoffman who developed Sally Rooney's novel into the series script, alongside the writers.  We talk about moving to New York, getting a job at A24 in its fledging years as a company and then being witness to their exponential growth, making the decision to start producing independently, moving back to Ireland, maintaining a work-life balance, how Jeanie creates an atmosphere of collaboration and care on set and adapts her role to the needs of the project and the filmmaker. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I did having it.

Since joining the BBC in 2017, Rose has commissioned and Executive Produced a wide range of titles including… Joanna Hogg's THE SOUVENIR and THE SOUVENIR: PART II Eliza Hittman's NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS Sean Durkin's THE NEST Steve McQueen's SMALL AXE Jane Campion's THE POWER OF THE DOG Debbie Tucker Green's EAR FOR EYE ...among many others and is passionate about backing new and emerging filmmakers. Rose was also an EP on BBC Three's smash hit adaptation of Sally Rooney's NORMAL PEOPLE, produced by Element Pictures. After graduating from Cambridge University, Rose worked in theatre before freelancing as a script editor and producer. Then she joined Film4 where she would become Head of Creative. Whilst there, Rose developed and executive produced an array of recent successful UK films, including Yorgos Lanthimos's THE FAVOURITE, Martin McDonagh's THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI, Steve McQueen's WIDOWS, Lenny Abrahamson's ROOM, Lynne Ramsay's YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE and Andrea Arnold's AMERICAN HONEY. It was an immense pleasure to talk to Rose about a surfeit of topics, from how theatre prepared her for a career in film, what she learned working at Film4, what it means to be a director of a public funder and the considerations that come into play in making that organisation accountable, accessible, inclusive and supportive to what success look like and how she and the BBC Film team back filmmakers. Unsurprisingly, Rose had a lot of wisdom that she was generous enough to share and I know that this is an interview I will be returning to time and time again.  Please note that this was recorded remotely over Zoom and there are some occasional audio glitches.  This is episode 100 of Best Girl Grip.

More about SJ McArdle. As a solo singer-songwriter, SJ has also released three albums, most recently Blood and Bones in 2011. The songs feature contributions from some of SJ’s heroes like Rodney Crowell, guitarist Richard Bennett (Steve Earle’s Guitar Town) and the Love Sponge Strings (Bruce Springsteen’s The Rising). Irish Times (photo by Frank Miller) The album’s lead-off song, “Two Steps From Heaven” was the main song in the Cecelia Ahern-written movie Between Heaven and Here. Accompanying the album release was some significant media attention and reviews and very successful German and Irish tours. Another of SJ’s songs, “Till The Docklands Drown”, is performed during Element Pictures’ A Date For Mad Mary (2016) and several of his readings of traditional Irish songs are featured in the 2019 movie End of Sentence, starring Sarah Bolger, Logan Lerman and John Hawkes. He performed songs from Blood and Bones live on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM and on Ireland AM on TV3. In 2009 he completed a European arena tour as special guest to Reamonn, playing to 70,000 people over three weeks. SJ has also been in occasional demand as a session musician, playing mandolin for Ricky Warwick as they opened shows for Bob Dylan (Odyssey, Belfast) and Sheryl Crow (Point, Dublin). He has also shared a stage or studio with Neil Hannon, Stewart Agnew, Joe Elliott and Miss Paula Flynn. Praise for Kern’s False Deceiver: “Quite lovely … an intriguing release. Those interested in trad music that crosses over into singer/songwriter territory will find this album particularly attractive, but its accessibility will have easy appeal to general audiences. Thumbs up!” – The Irish Echo Praise for Blood and Bones: “Bravo for an artist who has taken contemporary Irish music to parts it far too seldom reaches” – Hot Press “SJ’s deep, sonorous voice brings authority to the songs. If Whipping Boy were raised in Nashville they might sound like this” – Mail On Sunday “Spare couplets conjuring entire vistas with the focus of David Lynch” – The Irish TimesSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jo came to Cornerstone having spent five years at HanWay Films where she managed the international launches and releases of award-winning films including Todd Haynes’ Carol and John Crowley’s Brooklyn.  We talk about the intricacies of marketing for a sales company as opposed to a distributor, the creative point of view it requires, what happens when a film goes to a market and the best piece of advice that Jo has ever received. As someone who had a brief stint working in sales it was a joy to revisit that element of the film industry and also during a year where things have felt decidedly quieter on the cinematic front, to be reminded of the madness and magic of a market. So I’m very grateful to Jo for joining me.

He's joined by the RTÉ arts broadcaster Rick O'Shea and Andrew Lowe, the part-owner of the Lighthouse and Palas (Galway) cinemas and a co-founder of the film production company Element Pictures. Adrian puts it to them that Disney's decision to prioritise streaming from now on could be a signal of what's to come, with more and more movie budgets going into platforms like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+. This, in turn, could lead to long term cinema closures as people start cutting back on the number of times they want to go into multiplexes compared to the 65-inch 4K telly in their own front room.

Who knows when we'll get to lose ourselves in the darkness of a cinema again? But when we do all of us at The Women's Podcast are urging you to go and see a wonderful Irish film called Herself which tells the story of a brutalised single mother Sandra and her dream to build her own house where she and her two small daughters can be safe. The story of the film was written by Dubliner Clare Dunne who also stars, and was inspired by a real-life friend of Clare's who was forced to declare herself homeless and live in a hotel in order to get on the housing list. It tells the story of how women in this situation. women fleeing terrifying home situations of domestic abuse, are treated by society and the legal system. But at the heart, it's a hopeful, uplifting film directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) about how one woman took matters into her own hands despite all the obstacles. Already critically acclaimed, Herself - a co-prodcution between Sharon Horgan's company Merman and Element Pictures - is moving, funny and at times painful to watch. Clare Dunne joined us on the episode to talk about a movie that was a real labour of love. Also, a reminder that tickets are still available for our Big Night In Season 2. I had a really wonderful chat with Emma Norton, who is an In-House Producer at Ireland’s Element Pictures, she was formerly Head of Development there and she’s worked on a number of their big titles, including The Favourite, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Room, The Lobster, Frank and The Guard. She has also produced Rosie and A Date for Mad Mary and most recently she exec produced the smash hit TV series that everyone’s been devouring - Normal People. We talk about getting fired from her first job as an agent’s assistant, freelancing, working for Film4, making the move to Ireland, building relationships with writers and directors and the different between adapting material for TV as opposed to film, as well as how lockdown has been treating her. Speaking of treats, I think this one, and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did. There are lots of pearls of wisdom inside.

Growing up in Dublin, one of Ed’s closest friends was Lenny Abrahamson, with whom he started making films early on. When Ed founded his company Element Pictures later on with Andrew Lowe, the two continued collaborating together. After making some waves with films such as Frank or Garage, the company’s big international year was 2015 with both Room and The Lobster. They went on to produce more unique films such as Disobedience and The Favourite. Most recently, Ed and Lenny collaborated again on the wonderful series Normal People. Listen to Ed talk about his way from Filmmaking Society at Trinity to the Oscars, the Irish Film Community and why he was hoping to not like Normal People when first reading it - but thank god he did.

It’s the small screen adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best selling novel, which was released just eighteen months ago. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie McDonald directed the new series from Element Pictures, which was filmed last summer in Dublin and Sligo. It’s already been the topic of a heated discussion on Liveline (it’s the national broadcaster promoting "fornication" don’t you know) and has received rave reviews both at home and abroad. Jenn and Emer have binge watched the entire 12 part series and share their thoughts on how the show perfectly portrays teenage lust, angst and awkwardness.
