It's mostly lollipops, ribbons and cakes for Clive Anderson this week as he meets Bake Off host Mel Giedroyc, Jane Austen improviser Rachel Parris and Romantic Novelist Mike Gayle (the only man to win the Romantic Writers Association's top award). But not all....Mel Giedroyc's new podcast - and she emphasises it's a comedy one - is taking over from Kathy Burke on Where There's a Will There's a Wake - all about death, funerals and everything in between. She reveals how she and Sue Perkins met and unsurprisingly enough it was love-friends at first sight. Rachel Parris is taking Austentacious, her improv show based on Jane Austen, on the road and to Edinburgh Fringe again. She explains why nothing quite hits the spot like Jane. But she's also written a novel based on the romance between Pride and Prejudice character Charlotte Lucas and Mr Collins. And reader, Eliza Bennett does not come out of this well. Mike Gayle is the only man the Romantic Writers Association has bestowed its Outstanding Achievement Award upon and is a bestselling novelist. He describes his favourite reader letter from when he worked as an Agony Uncle for Bliss Magazine back in the day.All accompanied by the glorious sound of Debbie Wiseman's music for the TV series Wolf Hall, played by the composer herself with the Locrian Ensemble of London, soprano Grace Davidson and Alec Harmon on Cor Anglais.Presented by Clive Anderson Producer Olive Clancy

At the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla in Westminster Abbey, music - chosen by the King - played a huge part in the ceremony. On today's programme we feature the new Coronation Anthem composed by Sir Andrew - Lord Lloyd-Webber - 'Make a Joyful Noise Unto The Lord' and 'Alleluia, O Sing Praises Unto Our God' also composed specially for the Coronation, by Debbie Wiseman, using words from Psalm 47 and sung by The Ascension Choir - the first Gospel Choir to sing at a Coronation ceremony. And we have an Island 'first' - the Choir of King Williams College, Castletown, were the only choir on the Island to be granted a licence to record the anthem specially commissioned by the Royal School of Church Music - 'The Mountains Shall Bring Peace' was commissioned by the RSCM and composed by Joanna Forbes L'Estrange. It's performed on today's programme by a choir of 40 - students and members of choirs Island-wide, including His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir John and Lady Lorimer. Musical Director is Head of Music at King Williams College, Steve Daykin, the organist is Stuart Corrie, and the music was recorded mixed and mastered by Gyp Buggane of Ballagroove Studios. Before all the regalia and symbols of earthly power were presented to the new King, he was given a specially-bound copy of the Bible - the words spoken as it was placed into his hands, the oath he took whilst holding it, and the challenging words then spoken by the Archbishop of Canterbury directly to the King and Queen are a powerful reminder that this ceremony has always been - and still is - a time for deep prayer. The giving of the Bible is also a link to an important event in St John's Methodist Church on Saturday 13 May when Paul Keeys of the international Bible-teaching ministry 'Walk ThroughThe Bible' will be presenting a day to put 'The Old Testament in a Nutshell' There's lots of information in this podcast, and the contact details to reserve your place are : Pauline on 01624 611 737 or email louisewhitelegg@hotmail.co.uk And we have all our usual notice board news ..... Mike Baker and Rory Russell of the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet join the Soundweavers team to discuss their work promoting the guitar quartet through a careful balance of traditional repertoire, arrangements, and commissions. They chat about their relationship with Chandos Records and their recording projects. They speak about their beginnings with Live Music Now and the value that community engagement programs offer both the local audiences and the performers. Recognized as one of the world's leading guitar quartets, the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet is a dynamic and innovative ensemble known for its extraordinary ensemble in performance and expansive repertoire. Formed originally at the Royal Northern College of Music (in 1999), under the guidance of Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey, the quartet went on to study with renowned guitarists such as Sérgio Assad, Oscar Ghiglia and Scott Tennant. Their early successes included winning awards from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, Tillett Trust and Tunnell Trust. In 2016, the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet was invited to perform at Classic FM Live at the Royal Albert Hall with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. The concert, which also featured Maxim Vengerov, Debbie Wiseman, Laura Wright and Wayne Marshall, was recorded for subsequent broadcast. The Aquarelle Guitar Quartet has performed in many other major concert halls in the UK, including Perth Concert Hall, Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Bridgewater Hall. Their engagements have taken them throughout Europe, most recently visiting Germany, Spain, Denmark, Greece, Estonia, Poland and Ireland. The ensemble made its debut in Asia in 2014 with a series of concerts in Seoul and they returned to South Korea in 2016, this time to perform at the Daejeon International Guitar Festival. The AGQ is dedicated to presenting music from around the globe, spanning the period from the renaissance right through to the present day. Many established international composers, including Carlos Rafael Rivera (U.S.A), Phillip Houghton (Australia), Stephen Dodgson (U.K) and Nikita Koshkin (Russia) have invited the quartet to perform their compositions, and the group's commission “Danças Nativas”, by the Brazilian composer Clarice Assad, was nominated for a Latin Grammy® award for best classical composition in 2009. A further source of material for the AGQ's constantly expanding repertoire is their own arrangements of music from various genres, including works by Gismonti, Mussorgsky, Rossini, and film music composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. In 2009 the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet was signed exclusively to Chandos Records and has since recorded 5 albums; “Spirit of Brazil” (March 2009), “Dances” (June 2010), “Final Cut” (June 2012), “Cuatro” (Nov 2013) and “Aspects” (Nov 2016) all received highly enthusiastic reviews in the press. The transcript for this episode can be found here. For more information about the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet, please visit their website, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Louise dives into the artistic process of composer Debbie Wiseman OBE and learns how music penetrates our hearts and communicates like an all-encompassing language and is a superpower that can connect us with ourselves and each other. Debbie would choose to step inside the mind of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart a.k.a the legendary classical musician Mozart to explore how on earth someone so young, (he started composing his first piece of music at 5 years), was able to write the most unfathomably spectacular body of work? Highly recommend listening to Debbie's collab with Stephen Fry The Mythos Suite and The Musical Zodiac here. Follow Debbie on Twitter.

Hello and welcome back to NewfoundPod, a bite sized podcast about Newfoundland. I'm your host, Debbie Wiseman and this is another mini episode. I had planned to release an episode about the Colonial Building Riot, but I haven't finished it and rather than rush through it, I thought I'd release this instead. Today I'm going to tell you about a couple of Newfoundland traditions regarding the month of May. The first saying you may have heard of is a warning against purchasing a broom during the month of May. It goes “Buy a broom in May, sweep your family away.” Variations also include sweeping your friends, your fortune or even your own life away. You could also sweep the head of household away. Some superstitions even warn against using a broom at all during the month. The origins of this superstition have been lost over time, but it seems to have both English and Irish origins. In fact the superstition was so strong in Ireland that they even refused to make a broom during the month. Another tradition revolved around the inevitable snowfall in May here in Newfoundland. While some other places are enjoying the spring weather, we know we will have a few more snowfalls at least. Our Irish ancestors suggested gathering some of that May snow in a bottle, letting it melt and dabbing it on your face to fade freckles. Personally, I like freckles. In my research, I of course consulted the writing of folklorist Larry Dohey, who said “A face without freckles is like a night without stars.” I completely agree. Another use for that May snow that was collected was to cure ailments, specifically, sore eyes. Traditionally, the seal hunt ended around this time of the year. Fishermen refused to wear goggles, considering it “unmanly” and as a result, suffered from snow blindness. The May snow was said to soothe the sting from that. It could also be used to treat a sty and other ailments. Thanks to Dale Jarvis and Larry Dohey, as always, for their tireless efforts in researching and preserving Newfoundland folklore. I'll include links to their work in the show notes. Thanks for listening today, and I'll be back next week with a full episode. Talk to you then! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/newfoundpod/message

Hello and welcome back to Newfoundpod, a bite sized podcast about Newfoundland. I'm your host, Debbie Wiseman and in today's mini episode, I'm going to tell you about Lady Helena Squires. Helena Squires was born Helena Strong in 1879 in Little Bay Islands. She attended the Methodist College in St. John's, Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Emerson College and Harvard in Boston. She returned to Newfoundland and married Richard Squires in 1905. They settled in St. John's where Richard set up his law practice. He also spent 23 years in the House of Assembly. Part of his time in the House was spent blocking the efforts of the suffragettes to get women the right to vote. It's kind of surprising, then, that his wife would become the first woman to be elected to the House of Assembly. In 1929, the MHA for Lewisporte died suddenly, and a by-election was held the following year. Helena ran and won by a landslide, receiving 81% of the votes. She ran on a platform of raising the standard of living in Newfoundland, improving child welfare and public health. As you can imagine, some men were not happy having a woman in the House. I can't imagine it was easy for her. Frederick Alderdice, the opposition leader said "I know she will take a large part in government affairs, but hope her actions will never be such as to cause us to name the government a petticoat government." I'm sure he thought that was hilarious. Lady Squires, known for her wit, just replied, “Ladies are not wearing them now.” Lady Squires took her position seriously, though, and spoke up for the people she served. In 1932, Richard Squires was the Prime Minister of Newfoundland. The liberal government was losing public support, and this came to a head in April of that year, when a riot broke out, trapping Richard and Helena in Colonial House. They escaped unscathed, but both lost their respective elections a couple of months later. Of all the candidates, she came closest to being re-elected, losing by only 273 votes. By the way, I will be doing an episode on this riot very soon. Helena Squires trained to be a teacher and was considered a social activist at the time. She founded a teachers school and a maternity hospital. She also served as the President of the Grace Hospital Auxiliary and was always active in charity work and in the church. When Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949, she became the first president of the provincial Liberal Association, a position that she held until 1958. She passed away in 1959. On a final note, I noticed in my research that Lady Helena was often not written about in a favourable light, which I feel was due to her husband and his efforts against the women's vote and frankly, his corruption. I think this is unfair. It's assumed because her husband continued to oppose a woman's right to vote, that she did as well. In fact, I read that she was involved in the suffragette movement but when she married and her husband became involved in politics, she stopped participating, but still thought women deserved the right to vote. We have to remember that this was a different time, and for better or worse, she supported her husband. I think her run for the House at least signifies that she thought women belonged in politics and her charity work showed that she believed women deserved better in life. Hello, and welcome back to NewfoundPod, a bite-sized podcast about Newfoundland. I'm your host, Debbie Wiseman, and this is episode 25 – Happy Halloween! Yes, it's my favourite time of year again. Last year, I shared with you some spooky folk tales from Newfoundland. This year, I'll be doing that again, but this week, I wanted to do something a little different. This episode, I am going to read a spooky story written by a Newfoundland author. His name is Keith Daniels and he's written a few short and scary stories. Kids these days call them creepypastas, but I really don't like that word. I just call them scary stories. I'm old. Keith's stories take place in Newfoundland. This one ties into another one I heard being narrated recently, and I will link that telling, along with Keith's website, KeithDanielsAuthor.Wordpress.com, on the blog, and you can read more of his stories there. His work is fantastic and I hope I can do this story justice. Just a warning. This story contains some colourful language. I was going to ask permission from Keith to change it so I could maintain my clean rating, but I don't really feel comfortable asking an author if I can change their words. So I'm leaving it in. In a prestigious special episode of Spoiler, the rest of the team stand down to allow Rachael a whole show in which to explore her passion for the composers without whom the films and TV shows we love so much would not be half as effective. Having made her point by imagining a world in which Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ was scored by Vangelis, Rachael probes further into the world of score composition in interviews with Classic FM composer in residence Debbie Wiseman (‘Wolf Hall’, ‘Dickensian’), American composer Deborah Lurie (‘An Unfinished Life’, ‘Safe Haven’) and Stephen Rennicks, whose regular collaborations with director Lenny Abrahamson include award-winning scores for ‘Frank’ and ‘Room’. Among other insights, Rachael discusses her guest’s proudest achievements among their own compositions and whether they consider composing to be a vocation. She receives invaluable advice on how to approach the challenge of getting into the business and on maintaining that all-important balance between artistic freedom and commercial success. Elsewhere, Rachael discovers to her horror that Stephen Rennicks is not overly found of the music he composed for ‘Room’ and takes him to task over this audacious heresy! The Spoiler Composer Special is also the perfect opportunity to hear rousing excerpts from the scores that have so inspired Rachael and millions of other film, TV and music enthusiasts. Incidentally, if you enjoy the music in the show, we've put together a Spotify playlist of all the featured tracks.

“I’m watching you” This week we’re watching series one of Channel 4 and AMC’s sci-fi drama ‘Humans’ and for the first time in months the Spoiler team are a house divided. While Rachael finds the series gripping and thought-provoking to the extent that she spends entire evenings mulling it over, Andy arrives with a laundry list of pernickety issues which he wants to go through “systematically”.  Meanwhile, Paul is still enjoying that marvellous view from the fence. While the team manage to find some common ground, things get particularly heated in relation to the quality of acting in the series and Rachael and Andy turn in their own auditions for the roles of Mia and Leo respectively. Suspicions are raised that producer Jonny might be conducting a dual affair with both Andy and a home-made Gemma Chan synth and Paul wonders why, with all this talk of robots, no-one has seen fit to mention Metal Mickey. Elsewhere in a packed show, Rachael reveals her top 5 sympathetic synthetics and Andy takes a look at the underappreciated art of the TV recap sequence. Also, Rachael trails her upcoming Spoiler Score Special, in which she’ll be talking to film and TV composers including Stephen Rennicks, Debbie Wiseman and Deborah Lurie. This week’s scale: Will we be watching series 2?
