Shows opening in Washington and Dublin this month explore quiltmaking by African American women. Ben Luke talks to Raina Lampkins-Fielder, chief curator for the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, and the organiser of the exhibition Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee's Bend at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), about the history of quiltmaking in this small part of Alabama, and the growing recognition of its artistic importance. Paul Rowley, an acclaimed filmmaker, visual artist, writer, director, editor, cinematographer, producer, and co-founder of Still Films, hails from Dublin, Ireland, and currently resides in Brooklyn.  Delving into filmmaking in 1995, Rowley has crafted an impressive repertoire encompassing over 40 shorts, features, documentaries, video installations, and experimental films. Recognized as the Irish Film NY Rising Star and a two-time IFTA nominee for his documentary works, Rowley has garnered accolades from the Irish Arts Council, including the Glen Dimplex award from the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Irish American Art Award. He is a distinguished member of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective.  In 2007, Rowley co-established Dublin's renowned production house, STILL FILMS, where he serves as co-director. The company's debut feature documentary, "SEAVIEW," debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008, followed by the co-directed venture "Build Something Modern" in 2010 with Nicky Gogan.   Since then, Still Films has continuously impressed audiences across prestigious platforms like Sundance, SXSW, New York Film Festival, Hot Docs, Pompidou Centre Paris, among others. His recent acclaimed work, "THE RED TREE," sheds light on the clandestine history of Italian gay deportees under Mussolini's Fascist rule in the 1930s, notably showcased at CCI's Addressing the Nations early in 2021. "THIS ONE'S FOR THE LADIES," a project Rowley shot and produced in collaboration with director Gene Graham, premiered at SXSW 2018, clinching a special jury award and securing distribution by NEON.  Paul Rowley's dedication to merging art with activism is evident in his role as the video director for Gays Against Guns in New York City, a feature documentary focusing on the movement battling the gun violence epidemic in the United States, particularly impacting LGBTQ+ individuals and marginalized communities. With a rich tapestry of awards and accolades adorning his career, Paul Rowley stands as a visionary storyteller committed to reshaping narratives through the fusion of art and activism.

At the Irish Museum of Modern Art, a new exhibition explores the life and work of artist Hilary Heron.  Like many, I came away from it amazed that this important modernist sculptor was not better known here. Born in Dublin in 1923, her work achieved international recognition in her own lifetime. Dr. Billy Shortall is the author of an essay on Heron in the exhibition catalogue, and has done great work to bring her back to  deserved prominence. He discusses his career, higher education and the bright future for the economy.

Principally a sculptor who employs cast glass and drawing as primary methodologies, Clifford Rainey creates work that is interdisciplinary, incorporating a wide spectrum of materials and processes. A passionate traveler, his work is full of references to the things he has seen and experienced. Celtic mythologies, classical Greek architecture, the blue of the Turkish Aegean, globalization and the iconic American Coca-Cola bottle, the red of the African earth, and the human figure combine with cultural diversity to provide sculptural imagery charged with emotion.  A British artist whose work has been exhibited internationally for 50 years, Rainey was born in Whitehead, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1948. He began his career as a linen damask designer and worked in William Ewarts linen manufacturers from 1965 to 1968. Later, the artist studied at Hornsey College of Art, the Walthamstow School of Art, where he specialized in bronze casting, and the Royal College of Art, where he received his MA and specialized in glass. Between 1973 and 1975, Rainey ran his own glass studio in London and won a commission for a small sculpture to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II. In 1984, the artist moved to New York and established additional studios there. Rainey's sculptural work has been exhibited internationally including: The Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Kunstmuseum in Dusseldorf, Germany, The Millennium Museum in Beijing, China, and the Museo de Arts Contemporaneo in Monterrey, Mexico. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums including:  The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland, The DeYoung Museum, San Francisco, California, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Art and Design, New York, The Fine Arts Museum of Boston, and The Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Canada. Rainey has realized a number of public art commissions including: The Lime Street Railway Station in Liverpool, England, the Jeddah Monument in Saudi Arabia, and the 911 Communication Center in San Francisco. He is a recipient of the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award, Chicago, and the 2009 UrbanGlass Outstanding Achievement Award, New York. Balancing his commitment to studio practice with his desire to share knowledge, Rainey has lectured extensively around the world. He lectured at The Royal College of Art in London for seven years and was a Professor of Fine Art and Chair of the Glass Program at The California College of the Arts from 1991 through 2022.  On October 8, 2017 at 10:30 p.m., Rainey and his partner, Rachel Riser, were awakened by a neighbor's frantic telephone call warning them that a wind-driven wildfire had kicked up and was blazing toward their shared Napa, California, residence. They needed to get out immediately. Far more devastating than the destruction of his home and studio was the complete loss of all the artwork on the property — not only two year's worth of work for an upcoming exhibition, but the artist's archive of drawings of every project he'd ever done, as well as a collection of his strongest work he was planning to donate to a museum.  Rainey still resides in Napa, California, and in March 2024 took time away from rebuilding his studio to participate in an artist residency at the Museum of Glass, Tacoma. There, he advanced ideas and processes originally seen in works he lost to fire.

This episode we are thrilled to be joined by the artist P Staff.  Born in Bognor Regis in the UK and now living and working between Los Angeles and London, P's work draws from a wide-ranging assortment of inspirations, materials, and settings to emphasize the processes by which bodies – especially those of people who are queer, trans, or disabled – are controlled by society.  P works across multiple media, including installation, film, and poetry. In their 2019 installation On Venus at the Serpentine Gallery in London, P used mirrored floors, yellow lights, and warped footage to explore the exchange between bodies, ecosystems, and institutions from a queer and trans perspective. P went on to present a version of this work at the Venice Biennale last year. And in their exhibition this summer at the Kunsthalle Basel titled In Ecstasy (or alternatively In Ekstase), P used materials including electric nets, architectural interventions, and holograms to consider how bodies are disciplined in a society defined by capitalism and its brutality.  Among a host of venues worldwide, P has had solo exhibitions at institutions including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Chisenhale Gallery, London (which is actually run by Zoe Whitley, a guest from Season 1 of Art from the Outside). Ep.115 features Beverly Semmes. She is a sculptor whose work incorporates painting, drawing, film, photography, and performance. These complementary elements adhere in surprising ways, probing the paradoxes and complexities of the female body and its representation. Current exhibitions include inclusion in a group show at Canada gallery curated by Kahlil Robert Irving titled SUMMER Nights, which opened on July 8th, 2022. Semmes recently participated in an exhibition titled Process on view at the Alexander McQueen flagship location on Old Bond Street in London. For this presentation 12 visual artists from around the world were invited to respond to the upcoming Alexander McQueen collection. In May 2022 Semmes created Pool in collaboration with Jennifer Minniti and Emily Mast at JOAN exhibition space in Los Angeles. Pool was on view through mid June 2022. Semmes' paintings and sculptures were also recently on view in Witch Hunt at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; a Hammer Museum billboard announcing the Witch Hunt exhibition continues to loom over the historic corner of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards. The artist has had dozens of solo exhibitions at institutions such as MoMA PS1, ICA Philadelphia, Sculpture Center, the MCA Chicago, the Wexner Center for the Arts, Artist's Space, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Frances Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. La Fondation Pernod Ricard accueille, le 13 janvier 2022, dans le cadre du cycle « Poésie Médium Art » l'artiste David Douard et l'anthropologue Frédéric Keck. Au centre de leurs démarches et pratiques, selon des modalités très différentes, on trouve ce passage du vivant au non-vivant, des flux et des virus, de même que l'action de leurs représentations visuelles, sociales et politiques. Quelles métaphores pour quel type de compréhension et d'expérience, relieraient alors, les pandémies présentes (et futures) à l'espace de création et d'exposition ? L'univers de David Douard a pour point de départ le langage dans ses formes fragmentaires et dérivées. Des poèmes provenant d'internet et des paroles anonymes, empreints le plus souvent de chaos, déviance, maladie ou frustration, deviennent le fluide vital qui alimente ses sculptures, portées par leurs propres mutations. Sa pratique établit un autre espace social, hybride, au contact fantasmé aussi des technologies numériques. Episode No. 531 features artist Beverly Semmes and curator Jeffrey Spier. Beverly Semmes is included in "Witch Hunt," an exhibition that presents how 16 women artists have used feminist, queer, and decolonial strategies to explore gender, power, and the global impacts of patriarchy. It is on view across two venues, the Hammer Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles through January 9. On January 9, the JOAN exhibition space in downtown Los Angeles was scheduled to host "Pool," a performance and installation developed as a collaboration between Jennifer Minniti and Semmes' CarWash Collective and Emily Mast. It has been postponed due to the pandemic. The performance will feature a new collection of CarWash garments based on Semmes' Feminist Responsibility Project. In New York, Susan Inglett Gallery will show new work from Semmes beginning February 3. Semmes's multi-disciplinary work explores the body and its representation. Her work has been the subject of solo shows at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, and more. On the second segment, Spier discusses "Rubens: Picturing Antiquity," a Getty Villa exhibition that looks at how Rubens's work was informed by classical antiquity. It was curated by Anne T. I had the pleasure of sitting down to talk to the phenomenal painter John Walker. John is not only a painter whose paintings are poetic in their paint application but he is also an artist who cares about young painters. I had the privilege of studying with John at Boston University where we all were inspired by his words and awed by what paint can do.    John Walker was born 1939, in Birmingham, England. He studied at Birmingham College of Art (1956-1960), and continued his studies at The British School in Rome (1960-1961), and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris (1961-1963) John Walker was a Gregory Fellow at Leeds University (1967-1969). He was awarded a Harkness Fellowship to the United States (1969–70) and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981. He has been artist-in-residence at Oxford University (1977–78), and at Monash University, Melbourne (1980). He also represented England at the 1972 Venice Biennale. John has taught at the Royal College in London and at Yale University. In the 1980's he was Dean of Victoria College of Art in Melbourne, Australia. From 1993 to 2015, he taught at Boston University and is currently Professor Emeritus of Art and former head of the graduate program in Painting and Sculpture at Boston University School of Visual Arts. He has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in NY; The Phillips Collection in DC; The Tate Gallery, London; The Hayward Gallery in London; The Kunstverein, Hamburg; The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia; and others. Episode Three is an exploration of the work of visual artist Isabel Nolan, with particular emphasis on the making of her latest exhibition, A Delicate Bond Which is Also a Gap, at Solstice Arts Centre in Navan.   Isabel has an expansive practice incorporating sculpture, painting, textile work, photography, writing and works on paper, driven by a restless inquisitiveness and a burning intelligence. For this episode Dónal takes a deep dive into her recently published book of artwork and essays Curling Up With Reality, before focusing on the inspiration and methodology behind her latest show.   The opening chapter of this episode was recorded on the nearby Hill of Tara, a suitable portal into an intriguing world of contemporary art.   Isabel's work is included in public collections such as: Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Tate, London; The Hugh Lane Gallery, Ireland and Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, Abu Dhabi. Conor Tallon spoke to Michael Waldron of the Crawford Gallery about this WORK OF THE WEEK , which has just turned ten years old…Into the Mire (2011) by Nigel Rolfe records one of the artist's performance pieces as a response to the global financial crisis of a decade ago and serves as a metaphor for Ireland's own economic collapse.Filmed in the Bog of Allen, located west of Dublin between the Shannon and Liffey rivers, it “is a slow-motion capture of the artist falling into deep, dirty bog water.” Incongruously dressed in a clean white shirt, dark trousers, and formal shoes, the artist's intentional fall registers as a visceral shock, his recovery requiring effort. Commissioned by Crawford Art Gallery, this significant performance articulates Rolfe's research interest in place, landscape, and sociopolitics, which can be considered as emblems for human differences.Nigel Rolfe (b.1950) is a performance artist and member of Aosdána. Born on the Isle of Wight, he moved to Ireland in 1974 where his performances attaining legendary status. The performance is a solitary event. His work also incorporates photography, video, and sound, and is held in the collections of Crawford Art Gallery and Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). In this episode host Emmett Scanlon meets Nathalie Weadick. Nathalie is the director of the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF). The IAF is an independent organisation dedicated to the promotion of architecture as culture. In a wide ranging conversation, Nathalie recalls her early career in Visual Arts and as Director of the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny and how she moved into architecture. The conversation covers risk taking, growing a desire for architecture, the impact of public engagement practices and that the time is here for a new "house" for architecture in Ireland. She has been the director of the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) since 2007. Through the IAF she has delivered many initiatives exploring the impact of architecture on society, culture, and history. She initiated the development of a BMX Skate and Play Park, a community-led design project with Dublin City Council, Ballyfermot Community, and architects Relational Urbanism. The framework for this project developed into a national program called Reimagine. She established the ongoing and successful National Architects in Schools Initiative and produces Open House Dublin, Ireland's largest architecture festival engaging thousands annually. From 2013 to 2021 she curated with Arup New Now Next a series of talks in Dublin with David Adjaye, Jeanne Gang, Tatiana Bilbao, Rozana Montiel, Kunle Adeyemi, Workac, Minsuk Cho, Ole Scheeren, Bjarke Ingels, Winy Maas, and Grafton Architects. 2017-2018 she was on the team of assistants to the Curators Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition at Venice. In 2015 she was the Architecture Advisor for Irish Design 2015 and co-curated with Raymund Ryan New Horizon_Architecture from Ireland and presented ten emerging and current Irish practices at the London Festival of Architecture, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and the Hong Kong/Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale. In 2015/16 she curated We Built This City a series of panel discussions in London, Chicago, and New York about the impact of Irish creativity on global cities. In 2013 she curated The Everyday Experience in the Irish Museum of Modern Art about the impact of architecture on people. In 2008 she co-curated with Prof Hugh Campbell The Lives of Spaces for the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and in 2010 she was Commissioner of the Irish exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale. 2004-2007 she held the position of Deputy Director at The Architecture Foundation in London and with Director Rowan Moore produced the London Debates in the Turbine Hall TATE Modern. Formerly, she was Director of the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny for five years, where she curated shows by international artists. She has written for many publications on visual arts and architecture. In 2017 she received an Honorary Fellowship from the RIBA. Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. The conversation begins with the notion of architects being asked or expected to "take a position", with each architect in turn outlining how they begin a project but also their reaction to that notion of position-taking means in architecture. The quartet discuss the form and nature of their individual practices in architecture, their desire for public work, the possibility of architects contributing to wider strategic thinking and policy, and at what point architects might just have to stop producing. About Noreile Breen | Noreile Breen studied architecture at the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT. She worked with Atelier Bow-Wow in Japan and Steve Larkin Architects before establishing her own practice which is based between Dublin and Kerry, Ireland. Her practice is focused on creating buildings which have a rich spatial character and are rooted in the built heritage of the Irish rural landscape. About Tom O Brien | T O B Architect is an explorative, critical architectural practice based in Dublin and Co. Tipperary, Ireland. It was founded by Thomas O Brien in 2013 and since then has earned a reputation as an expansive practice that incorporates an ongoing examination of the complex inter-related nature of material things, humans, animals, and plants into each project. The practice has been recognised domestically and internationally, receiving an Architectural Association Award 2019 for Killan Farmhouse, and being shortlisted for the international Architectural Review Emerging Architect prize in 2018. Thomas has been supported by an Arts Council Bursary in 2020. Thomas is a Design Fellow at University College Dublin where he teaches in the first year studio. . About Jennifer O Donnell | Jennifer O'Donnell is an Irish architect, teaching assistant at the TU Braunschweig and founding partner at plattenbaustudio. Jennifer studied Architecture at University College Dublin, following which she worked for GKMP Architects and Sauerbruch Hutton Architects before founding her architecture practice Plattenbaustudio in Berlin in 2018, together with her partner Jonathan Janssens. Plattenbaustudio began with an idea about combining the practice of designing and building architecture with a sustained focus into the potential of architectural drawing as a tool for investigation and communication. Since then the studio has grown to specialise in the development of architectural drawings for research, for public and private clients, for exhibition and dissemination- run in tandem with their building projects. Plattenbaustudio's work has been exhibited at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the London Festival of Design and the Irish Embassy in Berlin. Jennifer herself was awarded the AGA Gold Medal in Architecture upon her graduation from UCD Dublin in 2012, was the recipient of an Irish Arts Council Architecture Bursary Award in 2019. . About Andrew O Murchu | Andrew Ó'Murchú is a co-founder of BothAnd Group, with Kate Rushe, Alice Clarke, and Jarek Adamczuk. BothAnd Group is a collaborative research and spatial design practice that aims to understand the behaviour of living systems and deploys architecture as a methodology to look at the world. Andrew currently lectures in architecture at both TU Dublin and Ravensbourne University London. An early work by Dorothy Cross, Simeon's Hut (1986) anticipates the artist's later tendency to incorporate found objects, such as boats, animal or shark skins, in her oeuvre. Comprising a mix of materials, the work can be read from the gravity of lead at its base, with gilded steps leading upwards towards a narrow, vertically placed shaft of timber surmounted by a modest hut.If we are to seek a narrative context for the work, its form coupled with its title can be taken to refer to Simeon Stylites (c.390-459). This fifth-century ascetic saint lived for 37 years on a platform atop a column near modern-day Aleppo, Syria. Does Simeon's Hut therefore propose a site of solitary meditation away from busy communal life?Dorothy Cross (b.1956) is one of Ireland's leading contemporary artists and her work has been described as “moving from opera to object in a territory between idea and nature.”Educated at the, then, Crawford Municipal School of Art, Leicester Polytechnic, and San Francisco Art Institute, Cross represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1993. Conor Tallon spoke to Assistant Curator Michael Waldron of the Crawford Art Gallery about The River Boundary (Lough Hyne) by William Crozier.This week's work of the Week offers an escape into the natural world. The title provides a clue to the location – Lough Hyne, near Skibbereen, which has for centuries been acknowledged as a special place. Connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow channel – The Rapids – it is Ireland and Europe's first Marine Nature Reserve.The painting itself seems to inhabit a boundary between water and dry land, with tree forms mimicking kelp and the horizon line occupying a spot high on the picture plane. Jackie Nickerson: TerrainNovember 5 – December 20, 2013Kathleen O. Ellis GalleryGallery talk: Thursday, December 5, 6pmReception: Thursday, December 5, 5-7pm—Jackie Nickerson makes photographs that examine people and their relationship to the earth, through the physical and psychological conditions of living and working on the land. With her exhibition Terrain, Nickerson revisits eastern and southern Africa, focusing on how the exertions of labor leave traces on people and the environment.After fifteen years working in the fashion industry for clients like Interview and Vogue, Nickerson felt unfulfilled and sought something more. In the late ‘90s she took a trip to Zimbabwe with a friend, expecting to be there for just a few weeks. She ended up staying for four years, traveling through other countries of Sub-Saharan Africa in a small flatbed truck. She has since returned many times to continue photographing farm life through her unique lens. Hands and plants, limbs and fabric, bodies and soil, the subjects of Nickerson’s portraits are, in the fullest sense, terrene—of the earth. The workers are obscured by the sheer size and weight of their harvest, emphasized by the large scale of the photographs themselves. Many of her landscapes are photographed through a thin veil of plastic farming material, easily read as a metaphor for our modern separation from the natural world. “I believe that we have an indelible link to the earth but we’ve begun to undervalue it—even forget about it,” says Nickerson. Her contemplative pictures ask us to consider our own relationship to the land, and to the food we consume in our daily lives.Nickerson reveals by carefully concealing. “The lack of personal identity in the photographs is a deliberate question mark,” she explains. Recently, Jessa attended a fascinating exhibition of mysticism and art at the IMMA in Dublin called “As Above, So Below: Portals, Visions, Spirits & Mystics.” Pádraic E Moore, writer/curator/art historian from Ireland based in Brussels, was a curatorial advisor for the exhibition. He joins Jessa via Skype to discuss the secret history of the occult and modernism and the role it played in art, writing, and revolution. Pádraic E. Moore (b. 1982) is a writer, curator, and art historian. He holds a BA in History of Art and English Literature from University College Dublin (2004), an MA in Visual Art Practices from IADT, Dublin (2007), and completed CuratorLab, the postgraduate programme at Konstfack University, Stockholm (2010). Moore's practice is shaped by the belief that visual art enables alternative modes of interaction in a world increasingly led by techno­logical rationality. Moore's curatorial methodology is meticulous but subjective, and is informed by an acute awareness of the artist's individual position. Moore's research interests focus on the influence of esoteric philosophies upon the literary and visual arts. Recent study considers how occult organisations, such as the Theosophical Society, offered a vital catalyst for change in late 19th and early 20th century art. Moore's projects often explore how contemporary culture has embraced aesthetics and ideals informed by such esoteric traditions; chronicling the work of artists who refer to or follow in this tradition is an integral aspect of his practice. Nigel Rolfe is recognised as a seminal figure in performance art, in its history and among current world practitioners. He has lectured at the Royal College of Art since 1982. He is a senior visiting critic to postgraduate courses in the US and Europe. He was visiting professor in Sculpture at Yale University and visiting professor in Fine Art at the RCA. He is elected to Aosdana in Ireland. Born in the Isle of Wight in 1950, Nigel Rolfe lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. He works with many media – video and photography and sound – and for the past thirty years he has made performances throughout Europe, the former Eastern Bloc, North and South America and Japan. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He has exhibited in the São Paulo, Busan and Gwangju Biennales and shown work in many Art Fairs. His work is represented by galleries in Dublin, Paris and New York. In 2008 he made numerous one person and group exhibitions.

Brian Rutenberg’s paintings radiate the atmospheric haze, the shimmering heat, and the rich colors of the Deep South. He describes himself as a “Southern landscape painter living in New York.” Layers and details of the southern landscape have been peeled back in his paintings, leaving us with the dancing lines and shimmering pools of colors of the Carolina coastal wetlands. As I’ve gotten to know Brian through his Studio Visit videos on YouTube, and his book, Clear Seeing Place, I’ve come to expect the unexpected. Quietly contemplative yet intensely evocative, Hannah Starkey's photographs explore the physical and psychological connections between the individual and her everyday urban surroundings. Since the beginning of her career, the artist has worked predominantly with women as her subjects, collaborating closely with actresses as well as anonymous acquaintances she meets on-site to develop intricately textured scenes. Stark architectural backdrops and strong associations of color and imagery heighten the sensation of her compositions on both a formal and associative level, triggering personal interpretations and a deeper mediation on the experience of the visual world at large. Born in Belfast in 1971, Hannah currently lives and works in London. She received a B.A. in Photography and Film from Napier University in Edinburgh in 1995 and an M.A. in Photography from Royal College of Art in London in 1997. She has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, which include the Vogue Condé Nast Award (1997), the 3rd International Tokyo Photo Biennale’s Award for Excellence (1999), and the St. James Group Ltd Photography Prize (2002). In 2000, she presented her first major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. Other important solo presentations include Twenty-Nine Pictures at the Mead Gallery at Warwick Arts Centre in Coventry, UK (2011) and Church of Light Altarpiece, a site-specific commission for St. Catherine’s Church in Frankfurt (2010). Her work has also been exhibited as part of important group presentations at Tate Liverpool, Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam, Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, France, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, among other museums worldwide. The artist collaborated with palliative care specialists and researched Irish folklore traditions to create this special piece. Holy SHIT! Janine Antoni! shamelessly lifted from Art 21... Janine Antoni was born in Freeport, Bahamas, in 1964. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and earned her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989. Antoni’s work blurs the distinction between performance art and sculpture. Transforming everyday activities such as eating, bathing, and sleeping into ways of making art, Antoni’s primary tool for making sculpture has always been her own body. She has chiseled cubes of lard and chocolate with her teeth, washed away the faces of soap busts made in her own likeness, and used the brainwave signals recorded while she dreamed at night as a pattern for weaving a blanket the following morning. In the video, "Touch," Antoni appears to perform the impossible act of walking on the surface of water. She accomplished this magician’s trick, however, not through divine intervention, but only after months of training to balance on a tightrope that she then strung at the exact height of the horizon line. Balance is a key component in the related piece, "Moor," where the artist taught herself how to make a rope out of unusual and often personal materials donated by friends and relatives. By learning to twist the materials together so that they formed a rope that was neither too loose nor too tight, Antoni created an enduring life-line that united a disparate group of people into a unified whole. Antoni has had major exhibitions of her work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; S.I.T.E. Santa Fe; and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. The recipient of several prestigious awards, including a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship in 1998 and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award in 1999, Janine Antoni currently resides in New York.
