For more than two decades, Sharon Osbourne has been a regular feature on our screens. She came to prominence while appearing with her husband Ozzy on The Osbournes - a reality television show on MTV, which followed the family's daily life. She later became a talent show judge on television programmes such as the X Factor and America's Got Talent. She joins Anita Rani to discuss her forthcoming theatre show - Sharon Osbourne - Cut The Crap! - in which she promises to reveal all about some of the hardest years of her eventful life. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is warning of a growing mental health crisis amongst nursing staff, as its membership support line data shows a substantial increase in the number of nursing staff seeking help for having suicidal thoughts. We hear from Hannah - a nurse currently working in the NHS - and Stephen Jones, the Lead for Mental Health at the RCN to unpick what lies behind this increase. Dr Shani Dhanda is a disability inclusion & accessibility specialist, social entrepreneur and broadcaster. This month she was named the UK's most influential disabled person by the Shaw Trust as part of the Disability Power 100 nominated by the public and judged by an independent panel. Shani is also an Ambassador for disability charity Scope. The Autumn Statement was controversial in its announcements affecting sick and disabled people, with the Government claiming their changes would support more people into work and campaigners and some professionals saying they could make the situation worse. Shani joins us to give her take, but also to discuss her life. Women composers for the film, TV and gaming industries are rare; this month a report, Female Professionals in European Film Production 2023 revealed only 10% of European film composers are women; and in this year's GameSoundCon Game Audio Industry Survey, women game composers and sound designers made up only 15% of the talent. Anita discusses what can be done to reduce the gender gap in the media music industry with the composers Hannah Peel and Bishi. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Kirsty Starkey

Born in Coventry but evacuated to Preston during the Blitz, Delia cites the sound of air raid sirens as inspiring her interest in electronic sound. She went on to study Maths and Music at Cambridge University and launched her career at the BBC in 1960 as a trainee Studio Manager. She moved to the Radiophonic Workshop in 1962, where she spent the next 11 years developing experimental sounds and music for their TV and radio shows, in addition to working as a freelancer on film, theatre and other live projects. Her most famous work is her electronic arrangement of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme, created in 1963.Delia composed and produced electronic music using tape, plus early synthesis and sampling methods before specific instruments were created for these purposes. Her work has influenced and inspired many modern artists including The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Nainita Desai, Amon Tobin and Cosey Fanni Tutti, while Pink Floyd, Orbital and Hannah Peel have reinterpreted her work.Mark Ayres BiogMark Ayres is a composer, arranger, sound designer, mixer and mastering engineer. Mark wrote incidental music for Doctor Who in the 1980s. More recently he wrote the music for, sound-designed and mixed the reconstructed 'lost' Tom Baker adventure, “Shada”, and a celebratory feature length version of the original 1963 “Daleks” serial transmitted on BBC4 on 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who's 60th birthday. He has also composed for television and film including scores for 1996 feature "The Innocent Sleep" and the more recent "Scar Tissue".Mark was involved in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's final days and went on to become their archivist. A personal friend of Delia Derbyshire, he was entrusted with her personal archive after her death in 2001, which is now on permanent loan to the University of Manchester John Rylands Library and accessible for study. He is a Trustee of the Delia Derbyshire Day Charity. His devotion to the Workshop after Doctor Who ceased broadcasting in 1989 proved vital in regenerating interest in their work, and he is now the driving force behind their live revival on the festival circuit and in the creation of new works including the score for Matthew Holness' disturbing psychological horror film, "Possum". He has produced and mastered many recordings for Silva Screen Records and others, and his work remastering classic television programmes including Doctor Who, Quatermass, and the films of Ken Russell and Alan Clarke for broadcast, DVD and Blu-ray, including 5.1 remixes of many titles, has been highly acclaimed.David Butler BiogDavid Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Drama and Film Studies at the University of Manchester. He helped to bring the Delia Derbyshire Archive  to the John Rylands Library, Manchester in 2007 and is one of the archive's lead researchers and curators. It's none other than newly crowned Ivor Novello winning composer, artist, producer and broadcaster Hannah Peel.Hannah is truly hot right now with a plethora of awards and nominations to her name. She is a critically acclaimed film, tv and theatre composer - her Ivor was awarded for her score for The Midwich Cuckoos. She is an artist in residence at Kings Place where she will be curating a number of concerts over the next year and is also about to embark on a tour of her Mercury nominated album Fir Wave......oh and just as a side note she happens to present the hugely popular Radio 3 show Night Waves.Seb and Verity met Hannah back in April, the morning after press night for Dancing at Lughnasa at the National Theatre (scored by Hannah) and the announcement of her Ivors nomination. Her excellent level of chat post party highlights what a true pro she is! Conversation covers writing for television and theatre, composing Fir Wave during lockdown and now touring it - something she never expected to happen. Hannah also talks about her upcoming fully improvised concert with percussionist Beibei Wang - an anxiety dream situation for Verity and potentially quite stress inducing for Hannah! They talk about getting a work/life balance and how there needn't be one path into the music profession. You'll all be delighted to know there is also a smattering of dog chat......Huge thanks to Robert Simmons who has edited this episode while Seb is off treading the boards. To get tickets for Hannah's performance with BeiBei Wang at Kings Place click here; https://www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on/contemporary/hannah-peel-beibei-wang/Find out more about Hannah on her website; http://www.hannahpeel.com/You can follow Three In a Bar on Instagram @threeinabarpodhttps://www.instagram.com/threeinabarpod/We are on Twitter @threeinabarpod https://www.twitter.com/threeinabarpodAnything you'd like to share with us? Welcome to a special edition of the show recorded live at the bluedot music festival. On the panel are New Scientist journalists Rowan Hooper and Abby Beall, along with Emmy-nominated composer Hannah Peel and geoscientist and broadcaster Chris Jackson. With the awesome Lovell radio telescope dominating the sky above the festival, this episode begins with astronomy news, and in particular stories from the James Webb Space Telescope - including its mission to look at the atmosphere of rocky planets in the search for extraterrestrial life. There's also a nod to the late great James Lovelock, who has died at the age of 103.The panel brings their stories of joy and hope. Abby brings news of the saving of a research centre for intelligent birds. Chris marvels at an impressive global geological event which highlights the power of collaboration. Hannah dreams up a story about “nanoskin” which happens to be very similar to a real story we reported. And Rowan comes with the news that chimps have been found to treat each other using medicinal insects. The panel discusses the ethics and possibilities of brain organoid research. These are tiny human brains grown in a lab, which have recently been shown to give off brain waves equivalent to those seen in fetuses. The whole team is gifted with an imaginary $100 million, and asked how they'd use it to save the world. Rowan wants to refreeze the Arctic. Then there's a vibrant Q&A session with the audience. And for the boy who asked about brain organoids playing Pong, here's the story.InsideTracker: insidetracker.com/NewScientistHow We're Wired from The Bertarelli FoundationNew Scientist Live event: newscientist.com/nslbd See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the season two finale of The Film Scorer Podcast, acclaimed Northern Irish composer Hannah Peel joins the show! We primarily talk about her score for the new series adaptation of John Wyndham's novel The Midwich Cuckoos (which you may know as The Village of the Damned). It's a supremely cool score, mixing dark, oppressive and gentle soundscape electronics with voice. The most notable aspect of the latter - and the part that sold me on the score immediately - is Hannah's manipulation of her own voice to mimic the sound of cuckoos. In the midst of this, Hannah actually talks about why she thinks experimentations with voice have become more common in recent scores, and we talk a bit about her journey into composing media music as well as the thought that goes into curating a soundtrack release. The Midwich Cuckos is available to watch on Sky in the UK and may be forthcoming elsewhere. Hannah's score, and all of her other music, is available digitally, particularly on BandCamp (with The Midwich Cuckoos being released in conjunction with Invada). Photo credit: Tom Zimberoff Ahead of this weekend's Tectonic's festival in Glasgow, Kate Molleson meets the pioneering electronic music composer at the centre of this year's programme, Janet Beat, and learns how the studios she inaugurated at universities in Birmingham and Glasgow – from the late 1950s – blazed trails for future generations. Following a performance of Matthias Pintscher's La Linea Evocativa at Wigmore Hall earlier this week, presenter Tom Service speaks to the American-Canadian violinist Leila Josefowicz about her life making music on the concert stage, her role championing contemporary repertoire for the instrument, and the inspiration she finds in Bach's mighty Chaconne. The composer Hannah Peel and conductor Charles Hazlewood join Tom to discuss their new album, The Unfolding. Written during lockdown especially for the Paraorchestra, the album has shot to number one in the classical music charts, and we hear from the musicians in the ensemble, Hattie McCall-Davies and Lloyd Coleman, as they tour with live performances of the project this spring. And, the composer Michael Zev Gordon tells Tom about his new chamber opera, Raising Icarus, which explores the harm parental expectations and aspirations can have on their children. It's staged by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group this week.

Titres interprétés - Hiver, Live RFI - Automne, extrait de l'album The Human Seasons - Été, Live RFI.   Musiciens - Gustavo Beytelmann, piano - Philippe Cohen Solal, machines, ordinateur. Son : Benoît Letirant et Mathias Taylor.   Playlist - Horacio Salgan Orquesta A Fuego Lento choisi par Gustavo - Veronika Silva Dona Ubenza choisi par Philippe - Charlie Mingus Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (theme for Lester Young) choisi par Gustavo - Cristobal Tapia de Veer Pineapple Suite choisi par Philippe.

We're back with the second episode (of the second series) of Contemplative Podcast in which Matt Emery chats with Matthew Halsall, a Manchester-based jazz musician, trumpet player, and founder of the independent Gondwana Records. Learn all about his new album, Salute to the Sun, his new band, living in Japan, and of course, his very own label. Be sure to also check out the previous episode, where Matt speaks with Hannah Peel.

The Contemplative Podcast

In case you did not know this, let me restate. In September of last year, a Contemplative Classical community founded by Michael Price said its farewell. It has been active for three years, gathering a strong following for its expertly curated Spotify Playlist and a podcast where Matt Emery has interviewed contemporary musicians across thirteen (now archived) episodes. I quickly swept in to save this vessel, and in November declared the takeover and the revival of Contemplative Classical anew. Today, I am happy to announce the continuation of my commitment to this wonderful endeavour, with the official Series Two of The Contemplative Podcast. But, of course, I can't take all the credit here myself. This would not be possible without the perseverance of Matt Emery, who is the key to all the magic that is behind this show. I am only a publisher. In this new season, Emery has already put together an amazing lineup for the entire year, and today we kick off with the first episode, featuring Hannah Peel. This Irish London-based Emmy-nominated composer, singer, and arranger has worked on everything from documentaries (on “Game of Thrones”) to Netflix Special TV Series (“Kiss Me First”) to music for theatre adaptations (“Brighton Rock”), and the score for The Deceived. She's also collaborated with Spitfire Audio on creating the Music Box free Labs plugin. But I'm getting ahead of myself, and really should let Matt do the introductions. So here it is, without further ado, the first episode of Series Two!
