The Ancient, esou gëtt den Abu Qadim Haqq genannt. Dee mëttlerweil 55 Joer ale Mann ass eng Zentralfigur am Afrofuturismus Konschtmouvement vun Detroit. A sengem CV steet ënner anerem, datt hien d'Albumcovere vun den Techno-Legenden Underground Resistance an Drexciya gemaach huet. The Ancient war zu Lëtzebuerg ze gesinn: Am Claudio Caruso sengem Vinyl Harvest Buttek zu Esch huet hien zwou Stonne laang eng Dier bemoolt, bis datt eng Cyber-Fra op engem Päerd ze gesi war. Seng Duechter d'Qadira huet wärenddeems een DJ-Set gespillt. Duerno duerft ee Froe stellen. The Ancient huet op Nofro erkläert, firwat seng Duechter am Homeschooling ass: well den ëffentleche Schoulsystem zu Detroit miserabel ass - dëst ass zanter iwwert 30 Joer keng Neiegkeet. An Amerika ass Detroit dacks d'Punchline vu Witzer, déi scho laang net méi witzeg sinn, besonnesch zanter déi staark Automobilindustrie ënnergaangen ass. D'Stad Detroit ass awer och fir hir immens kreativ Musekszeen bekannt; och Hiphop gëtt do groussgeschriwwen. Den Eminem an seng Kolleegen am Rapkollektiv D12 si vun Detroit a liewe weiderhin do.

This news was met with consternation from music fans over how this honour completely overlooked the birthplace of techno, Detroit. For this patrons-only episode, Jeremy and Tim react to the news by pulling out a dozen or so of their favourite Detroit techno cuts to discuss. We hear about the ‘Belville Three', post-Fordism, Alvin Tofler and the relationship between Chicago and Motor City. We premiere new music from Swiss bass boss Hermeth as he features on LA based Dionysian Mysteries for a 4-track EP. We host ‘Do Ma Ting', an earth-shattering electro rhythm that is accompanied by glitchy hip-hop vocals and alarming synth lines. Hermeth is one of the charismatic and encapsulating figures in contemporary electro &broken club. The masked DJ and producer delves into the powerful sides of electro, ghetto tech, and breaks music. He has been catching peoples attention since he first joined the Geneva-based Brainwaves label in 2019. Hermeth delivers his long-awaited debut EP on Dionysian Mysteries, with remixes from AVALON and Buzz Kill. The Geneva hometown hero and Brainwaves Wunderkind has clearly etched out his own sound, which has become definitive in the electro scene, with a distinctive production approach. Infusing breaks with huge ripping analog bass lines and catchy vocals lending to its head thrashing charisma. Hermeth's carefree “no fucks” attitude is contagious and effective on the dance floor, embodying the Dionysian Aesthetic. We premiere ‘ Do Ma Ting', a slamming electro groove that leaves flavours of Mala through to Drexciya as the Swiss eradicates any thought of a rule-book on his latest release. He expertly blends new-age club focussed electro with the dexterity of classic Detroit sound-design, while still also harnessing his hip-hop influences – ultimately providing a piece of work that bone-crushing embodiment of electro past and present, while still firmly holding his middle finger to any thought of musical conformity. This one should be played loud, and with venomous attitude. Quince's return after an 8-year hiatus is nothing short of electrifying, as he unveils his highly anticipated four-track 'Anthology Of Interest' EP on SoHaSo's offshoot label, NOWHERE. Hailing from Utrecht, this talented producer takes inspiration from the fluid sounds of Detroit techno, infusing it with pulsating rhythms, alluring keyboard stabs, and sultry basslines. Among the EP's standout tracks, 'Space Pilot 3000' shines as a futuristic and jumpy electro track, where the worlds of Drexciya and Juan Atkins collide in a blinding orange supernova. 'Space Pilot 3000' propels listeners into an intergalactic journey with its mesmerizing sonic palette. Quince skillfully blends the intricate elements of Drexciya's otherworldly soundscapes and Juan Atkins' pulsating rhythms to create an irresistibly infectious groove. The track's distinctive character lies in its ability to transport the listener to a vividly imagined future, where cosmic energies converge, and dancefloors pulsate with energy. The buoyant synths and playful melodies intertwine seamlessly, creating a musical tapestry that evokes a sense of weightlessness and wonder. Quince's triumphant return with 'Space Pilot 3000' and the rest of the 'Anthology Of Interest' EP showcases his ability to craft a sonic universe that pays homage to the genre's pioneers while charting new territories of its own. Yazzus is one of the most exciting DJs out of the UK right now. But she doesn't play the usual UK stuff. Instead, her work—her productions and her DJing—is both a historiography and a dialogue of the Black Atlantic connection, taking in dance music genres from both sides of the pond. Her work, encompassing techno, electro and sometimes house, is an Afrofuturist project that combines past, present and future. Her recent EP, Black Metropolis, accomplishes this with a genuinely innovative take on '90s Black dance music that uses a vintage template to do something fresh. She calls her RA Podcast a "Black excellence" mix, traveling between eras and places, featuring artists like Skin On Skin, Paul Johnson, Drexciya and Huey Mnemonic. It's part of her mission to highlight (and remind people) about the Black origins of dance music, and also the vitality of today's Black dance music. This mix is a history lesson, a narrative and a rave all in one, something we're proud to host from an exciting young mind in the electronic music scene. @yazzus-1 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/862

City Scenes - Detroit

City scenes is our weekly Thursday feature in which we dive head first into the music scene of a particular city. We're going through the alphabet from A-Z. Last week for C we looked at Chicago and this we're driving 4 and half hours down the road into Michigan and we're looking at Detroit. Detroit is a city of 4,5 million people in the midwestern state of Michigan, USA. It's a city with a huge industrial history and a massive musical legacy. Known as the motor city due to the High concentration of car factories in the city that attracted thousands of people searching for work in the great migration that we heard about last week. Detroit is famous for the sounds of Mo-town, Rock Music, Hip Hop and Techno and today we're going to be taking a glimpse at all of these sounds. Before any of these genres or scenes existed, Detroit had a huge history of Gospel, Jazz and Blues music, and no doubt that all those sounds informed what came later in the city, but the sound that immortalized Detroit as a legendary musical city is the sound of Motown. Motown records is one of the most significant record labels in the history of American R&B and soul music. It takes it's name from Detroit's nickname of the motor city and it was founded in the 1950s by a motor factory worker called Berry Gordy. Motown went on to become home to some of the biggest names in Soul Music such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and The Jackson 5. Detroit also has a huge legacy of rock music and one band from Detroit that are often cited as being one of the most important rock bands in history, named after their home town, is the Motor City 5 or MC5, a band who spent years playing relentlessly in every venue around Detroit before they ended up getting a record Deal. They were known for their pro-civil rights and anti-establishment politics and heavy rock sound that went on to inspire bands like the Sex Pistols and the clash to create what went on to become punk music. The genre that Detroit is perhaps most exclusively credited with being the birthplace of is Detroit Techno. By the mid 1980s, the car industry that had seen Detroit thriving in the 1960s had already been in Decline for some time. The deindustrialization of the city, with factories closing down led to a phenomenon called “white flight” with the city's white middle class leaving Detroit and taking a lot of the city's wealth with them. The Population dropped to around 800,000 people and the city was full of abandoned houses, factories and warehouses. This harsh environment however served as the inspiration for what became one of the biggest subcultures in history. Drawing on the bleak visions of a deprived city that surrounded them and inspired by a particularly legendary radio DJ called the electrifying mojo who would play early European electronic music by the likes of Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder as well as the funk sound of bands like parliament and the B52s, and the newly emerging electro hip hop sounds of the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, young producers like juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Eddie Folkes and Derrick May transformed the mechanic, industrial and machine driven history of their city into music that was made with machines like drum machines and synthesizers based on repetition and groove. This was the sound of Techno. An early precursor to the sound of techno that bridged the gap between the sounds that the electrifying mojo was playing on the radio and what became techno was the music of a duo called Cybotron. Detroit Techno went on to be developed and refined to it's rhythmic essence by legendary producers like Jeff Mills and Underground Resistance. In this City Scene we heard Motown, rock and techno but Detroit is the birthplace of so many other famous artists and sounds including Madonna, Eminem, Sufjan Stevens, Aaliyah, J Dilla. Carl Craig, Drexciya, Moodyman and many more.

If you haven't heard of Nikki Nair at this point, we'd invite you to come out from under that rock you're living in. But jokes aside, the last 12 months have been the Atlanta producer's year. He's toured seemingly endlessly, has found his way into a number of local scenes and has put out records for labels like Dirtybird, Lobster Theremin and Scuffed Recordings. If that weren't enough, he's also been putting out an illuminating series of monthly singles on his Bandcamp that show off both his restless muse and his seeming ability to both perfect and put his own stamp on any sub-genre or style he tries. People usually use some form of the word "bass" to describe Nikki Nair, because of the way his music flits between dubstep, drum & bass, electro and more. One moment he's making staggering hip-hop instrumentals that would have fit right into the old LA beat scene, the next minute he's making pneumatic techno or uptempo stuff that would fit right in one Juke Bounce Werk. His voracious appetite for new sounds comes across on his RA Podcast, which is a sprawling two-hours-plus of genre hopping and careful mixing, hopping from mood to mood like a 2-D video game platformer. It starts off perhaps a little slower than you'd expect, but weaves through countless Nikki Nair tracks, older selections from Wolfgang Voigt and Drexciya and mind-melting club tracks from newer producers including DJ ADHD, Despina, Limewax and more. If you want to know what the hippest, most inventive dance music sounds like, bridging continents and oceans, this mix is it. @nikki-nair Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/848

Tomorrow Is The Problem PodcastWelcome to the ICA Miami Podcast. Each season, we'll explore familiar concepts from everyday life that we often take for granted. We'll expand these concepts to understand their critical historical and cultural underpinnings and forever change the way you view them.Oceanic Ways of KnowingThe focus of this first season is the ocean as a source of knowledge. Understanding identity and history inevitably requires a study of the seas, the communities it affects, and the secrets it was made to hold in the deep.Rising TidesFrom Miami's Tequesta to Hawaii's Kanaka Maoli, indigenous peoples everywhere are living memory of what the water has already taught us.Today's guests discuss the effects of handing stewardship back to native peoples to stem the tides of climate change.Timestamps + Takeaways[0:00] The Oahu Water Protectors versus the U.S. Navy, an exercise in indigenous rights and demands.[3:37] Land stewardship in Hawai'i is an issue best tackled by Kanaka Maoli whose methods of systematic observation resemble science but without the drastic excision of spirituality. Candace Fujikane shares some of the 4000 deities that describe natural and elemental processes.[7:09] Candace speaks to the importance of indigenous knowledge and methods — Hawaiian and otherwise — for combating climate change through restoration.[15:11] ICA Miami sits on Tequesta land, an extinct people whose stewardship duties have been transferred to the Miccosukee tribe.[17:41] Dina Gilio-Whitaker explains the significance, for the Colville Confederated Tribes, of the now flooded Kettle Falls along the Columbia river as well as the fracture and cultural wound the damming created.[21:53] Mending her connection to water by way of surfing, Dina embraced humility. She speaks about her work correcting false narratives and reclaiming surfing as a spiritual practice.[25:44] Climate change is a philosophical problem brought about by a commodified relationship to the land, and incidentally to water which can be directly countered with indigenous principles, knowledge, and practices.[31:22] Season 1 of Tomorrow Is The Problem podcast closes with a quiet reminder to reconnect the middle passage with the Afro-Futures seas of Drexciya, the healing waters of Hawaii, and the indigenous knowledge we all need to sail forward through unknown waters.Tune in for season 2.Contributors + GuestsDonna Honarpisheh / Assistant Curator and Host.Candace Fujikane / Professor and Activist.Dina Gilio-Whitaker / Journalist, Author, and Activist. This podcast was made in partnership with Podfly Productions. It provides a kind of spirituality that you don't see in many discussions of anthropogenic climate change.” Candace Fujikane“It's not a catastrophic event causing panic and anxiety but rather a practical question: Kanaloa is rising, how are we to greet him?” Candace Fujikane“It's the values of understanding how to live in relationship to the earth and the natural elements, that's what needs to be restored and that's why indigenous knowledge is so critically important to how we imagine a response to climate change, how we adapt to it or even how we mitigate it.” Dina Gilio-Whitaker

Understanding identity and history inevitably requires a study of the seas, the communities it affects, and the secrets it was made to hold in the deep.Transoceanic RelationsWhether firmly grounded in the geographical idea of “place” or that of placelessness, the diasporic experience across oceans manages to keep historical notions of connectivity. Our guests ponder the crisis or borders in voluntary and forced migrations across borderless oceans.Timestamps + Takeaways[0:00] Drexciya provides one perception of Afro-Futurism, but not all agree…The Mundane Afro-Futurist Manifesto by Martine Syms sets the tone.[4:12] The world's deadliest border was born of a crisis of European identity. SA Smythe breaks down how this identity also defines the “other” and the ways shifting ocean borders have enabled the abandonment of black bodies.[7:11] The Black Mediterranean enables framing of the current migrant crisis by recentering African participation in the historical building of Europe and the intersecting aspects of black culture throughout the diaspora.[10:00] A migrant crisis or a crisis of border treatment of migrants? Racial issues are not the trope of America, the European treatment of Ukrainians, as opposed to racialized migrants, has shed a stark light on this.[12:57] Edwidge Danticat speaks to the highly transient nature of Miami as well as her obsession with the ocean's borderless connectivity.[18:38] On the other side of the water in Haitian Kreyol can mean migration or death, Edwidge shares her understanding of continued ancestry, culture and History through — and despite — the middle passage break.[21:16] There tends to be an assumption that Europe is a place of whiteness. SA talking openly about black activism in Italy and around the Mediterranean raises the major point that black people in Europe exist.[22:40] Both historically and currently, migration and the precarity it bears is central to the diasporic experience as Edwidge sees it.[25:00] Mapping the overlapping, historical, and connective sea.[26:04] Episode 4 is next: Rising Tides.Contributors + GuestsDonna Honarpisheh / Assistant Curator and Host.SA Smythe / Writer, Translator, Performer, and Scholar.Edwidge Danticat / Novelist and Writer. This podcast was made in partnership with Podfly Productions. It's a crisis of European white supremacist identity because the ships that went to the African continent and brought black people across the Atlantic were European ships. They exported race and racecraft.” SA Smythe“They didn't take everything away from us, they didn't divide us completely with languages and locations. She also talks about the importance of adding creative works to archival memory.[23:02] Katherine speaks to works like The Black Atlantic and Drexciya as a metaphor and a geography for navigating the diaspora as well as its relationship to water.[25:00] Drexciya's lyricless story provides a different way to enter a discussion about race, Katherine explains how this openness takes us elsewhere without any map at all.[27:00] Katherine shares her thoughts on the possibilities of “belonging” to the sea, as opposed to the land, as well as how Afro-Futurism can think the world no-linearly — like Drexciya's alternate present narrative.[32:30] Episode 3 is next: Transoceanic Relations.Contributors + GuestsDonna Honarpisheh / Assistant Curator and Host.Abu Qadim Haqq / Illustrator and Artist.DeForrest Brown Jr. / Rythmanalyst, Media Theorist, and Curator.Katherine Mckittrick / Professor (Gender Studies) and Writer. This podcast was made in partnership with Podfly Productions. This set was recorded during the rise and fall of empires on Saturday the 11th of June. During this day Amsterdams Most Wanted had its very first art exposition. The artist was Abdul Qadim Haqq the writer of the book of Drexciya vol. 1 & 2. It's one of the greatest art projects where they synthesized a rich Afrocentric aquatic world to accompany their precise theory in the techno lexicon Haqq has provided art for many techno acts, including the Belleville Three, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, and Carl Craig to name a few. His art is the de facto visual aesthetic for the period in which the original Detroit techno/electro sound came into glorious form. It was sunny, the vibe and energy were as they should be and the mixture of attendees was in balance. Sous Dubois and Oliver Kucera played a b2b set where they blended a mixture of electro and techno Oliver is capable of creating more different styles within the wide variety of music, moving from deep Minimal to Breakbeat to Club to pounding techno. Sous his diversity is characterized by a blend of breakbeats, electro, tribal, rave, hypnotic, and trippy sounds that complement his overall techno sound. This set is raw and has no boundaries or rules, it contains energy shifts, it's mechanical, and going with the flow is what this set is about. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

To an international audience, NIKS might be best known as one of the cofounders of Black Artist Database, but she's also an incredible DJ. And public speaker. Over the past few years, through a mix of activism, thought and DJing, the London selector has created an all-encompassing approach to her artistry that centers dance music, social justice and an endless desire to uplift those around her, especially Black artists. Through Black Artist Database, NIKS has created a resource to support Black artists from around the world. What started as a spreadsheet called Black Bandcamp has become a fully-fledged platform with editorial, mixes and, of course, the powerful directory of artists that started it all to begin with. Outside of that, NIKS curates panels, hosts and gives talks, helps run a radio station called RTM and DJs. Her RA Podcast is inspired by a specific night she played in Manchester, but it's also a wonderful snapshot of her style, connecting the dots between Drexciya and Octave One, Nicola Cruz and Seth Troxler, Lyric Hood and James Bangura, and an electrifying section that weaves between tracks from X-Coast and X-Press 2. It's as thoughtful and intentional as everything else she does, an hour-and-a-half in the world of one of London's brightest stars. Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/827 @niksbad

“A three-and-a-half-hour podcast has every fan's wish as its subject. For some they enrapture the ear. For others they play on forever, never fading to white noise, never getting interesting until the listener turns their podcast app off in resignation, their dreams mocked to death by time. That is the life of a podcast fan. Now, podcasters omit all the things they don't want to cover and cover all the things they don't want to omit. The dream is the truth. Then they record and say things accordingly.” SPOILER WARNING: Autumn recounted the entire plot of Deep Cover (it's from 1:31:23 to 1:45:07 if you want to skip spoilers). In this week's patrons-only episode, Tim and Jeremy continue their mini-series on the aesthetic and political content of Afrofuturism. Beginning with Kodwo Eshun's 1998 book More Brilliant Than The Sun, Tim and Jeremy interrogate the thinking of a number of academics and journalists around the Cybernetic Cultural Research Unit, their body of work around cyber theory, and the music of the 'Hardcore Continuum' in the context of '90s intellectual culture. Tim and Jeremy spend time talking about the Detroit Techno of Drexciya, consider the complex position of soulfulness within Afrofuturism, and dig further into the contested ideas around the promise of technology. Finally, we hear about the origins of dubstep, with Jeremy making a strident case against the aestheticization of alienated urban life under capitalism - with some swinging UK Garage thrown in for good measure. Tim and Jeremy will conclude with part 3 on Afrofuturism in a fortnight. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Ellen Gallagher talks about her life and work through the art, literature, music and other cultural experiences that have profoundly affected her. She tells Ben Luke about the extraordinary opportunity she had to live with an original Keith Haring print while at Oberlin College, Ohio; her love of Diego Velázquez and Stanley Brouwn; the influence of the Afrofuturist mythology of the Detroit techno band Drexciya; how Herman Melville, in his novels and novellas, wrote more perceptively about race than he is often credited with, and much more. And, of course, she answers the ultimate questions we ask in each episode: if you could live with just one work of art, what would it be? And what is art for? What do we know about the afrofuturistic vision that dreams of peace without knowing slavery, a destination made possible by a black invention that many of us know today? Let's talk about it!
