Among the sport business stocks our panel sized up in this week’s edition of Buy & Sell on The Sport Market on TSN Radio was CFL Kick-off 2017. Check out the calls by host and sport business commentator Tom Mayenknecht, lawyer Jon Festinger, broadcaster Stu Walters and producer Andrew Wadden.
This week's cold open is an iTunes review from Brian McGee of Fargo, ND. We loved it so much, we had to open the show with it. The Stanley Cup Final is here! Nashville vs Pittsburgh Game 1 begins in the midsts of this week's podcast with Ryan, Geeta and our black ace Stu Walters of TSN 1040. We gather this week to talk all about the yellow Final of 2017. They give their Stanley Cup predictions and discuss the storylines going into the Final. From Nashville's defence and rock solid goaltending, to those two guys in Pittsburgh with the big numbers who appear to be amazing at hockey. They discuss PK Subban's recent media spotlight, John Scott's comments and share their thoughts on the Montreal/Nashville trade and how and why Montreal made the deal. Maybe PK's personality didn't jive with the Montreal core and dressing room. It appears to be doing great things in Nashville... the same maybe cannot be said for Shea Weber. Finally, the gang discusses the Vancouver Canucks recent signing of Philip Holm out of the IIHF World Championships. He played on the gold medal winning Team Sweden and was the one defensemen without NHL rights. Canucks fans see this as a total win for the team as they're able to land a sought after prospect. It's the second instalment of the PON Road Show! With Ryan on the road covering the WHL Playoffs, he enlists the PON Black Aces Simon, TSN 1040's Stu Walters and Grant to sit around the hotel room and discuss this week in hockey. The biggest news (for Canucks fans) is the signing of Brock Boeser. Brock's NCAA season finished Friday night and by Saturday morning, he was a signed Vancouver Canuck and made his debut in hometown against the slumping Minnesota Wild. The Brock hype has begun and they discuss what this means for the Canucks, their youth movement and the rebuild. They discuss Willie D's future with the Canucks. Grant makes a solid case to keep him around based on his positive development with the Canucks and the young kids on the team. Has his tough love and forcing the kids to earn their spots finally paying off? Is it time to cut him loose or keep him around when he's needed most? They also discuss Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk's comments about Sidney Crosby and his regular comments speaking against his own players and their opponents. Are Melnyk's comments a positive or a negative for the fans, the team and the players? Or is it a distraction and a cause of concern? Leon Draisaitl also comes up. He is leading the Oilers in scoring behind Connor McDavid and has become a HUGE part of the Oilers roster. They discuss his development and the different approaches taken with Draisaitl compared to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Finally, they discuss Brad Marchand's amazing season with the Boston Bruins. Going from noted cheap shot artist to Hart Trophy candidate, what changed? Will it last? And what does this mean going forward now that the Bruins are slowly becoming his team? If you're a $5 or more Patreon backer, head on over to the PON Patreon Page for "5 Minutes For Paying" as the boys discuss life on the road and movies that get you sucked into watching no matter what you're doing. Canucks bring back the classic skate jersey for one night only, and for one night only, they make the Maple Leafs look like an NHL team. Ryan, Geeta and P Mac are here this week to talk about the erratic Vancouver Canucks. Following a tough loss on Hockey Night in Canada to the Toronto Marlies, you begin to wonder what the team can or will do in the two weeks before the NHL Trade Deadline. They also look at Nazem Kadri's actions that got him fined $5,000 by the league and compare it to Zack Kassian's similar threat to Steven Stamkos. Speaking of Stamkos, the rumours are swirling!! Where is he going to sign? Buffalo? Tampa Bay? Toronto or OMG OMG OMG Vancouver? There's rumblings, cap space and a pesky ownership that wants a super star wearing blue, green and white. Where will he go? Tough bench interviews w/ Stu Walters on the WHL on Shaw, Evander Kane's lonely snapchat and much much more on this week's podcast! There's a contest on this week's podcast. email us the secret word that Geeta says on the podcast to win a Bo Horvat Skate jersey shirt. email us at pucksonnetca@shaw.ca to enter! Enjoy!
We're early on in the first round of the playoffs, the Canucks and Flames are in a classic Canucks/Flames hard hitting series and the Edmonton Oilers just won the lottery again. Ryan and P Mac are joined by Pucks on net black ace Simon as well as Stu Walters from TSN 1040 to break down the first week of the playoffs. They look at the Canucks' minor struggles in Game 3 vs the Flames, the instant affect of Michael Ferland and the possibility of a Ryan Miller appearance. They also look at the NHL Draft Lottery, what the Oilers are going to do and how Connor McDavid handled the news of his potential future NHL home all on live TV. The gang also looks at the coaching vacancies in the NHL and an incredible feel good story about Michael Ferland's journey to the NHL. Enjoy!
The 2015 NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone and for the most part, everything has generally stayed the same! P Mac and Ryan are joined by Stu Walters form TSN 1040 and the WHL on Shaw to talk about the slightly altered landscape that is the NHL following the deadline. The Canadiens are stocking up with big bodies for a long playoff drive and the Canucks stayed fairly quiet. They talk about the obvious tanking happening in Buffalo, Arizona going in the right direction and the recent goaltending problems in the Canucks/Blues game from Sunday night. Enjoy!
The Vancouver Canucks name Trevor Linden president of the team and the black clouds over Rogers Arena are instantly replaced with glowing optimism. Ryan, Dave and P Mac get together all fired up for the mean nothing games that always fill the final weekend of the NHL regular season and the upcoming NHL Playoffs. This week's podcast starts with Stu Walters interviewing Portland Winterhawks' Brendan Leipsic about his second period power play goal. They also discuss some scary rough stuff at the end of the Victoria Royals / Portland Winterhawks second round WHL Playoff series that saw Portland's Nic Petan and Victoria's Joe Hicketts knocked out on the ice. A lot of the podcast is discussing just what Trevor Linden as president can mean for the team and the fans and who could stay and could go regarding the coaching staff. They also rattle off their picks for the first round of the playoffs if they started today, and if the series wind up the way they are, Ryan has promised to make a big bet on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Enjoy!
