“If I don't push my kid, they'll waste their potential.” A lot of us believe this. But is it true? Myleik Teele joins Dr. Becky to work through a question that haunts every ambitious parent. What unfolds is an honest look at whose anxiety is actually running the show — and whether the drive we're trying to install in our kids is something we need to figure out for ourselves first. They get into: what ability vs. effort actually predicts about your kid's future, the moment Myleik saw a straight-A report card and felt something twist inside her, and the specific pressure Black parents carry into every one of these conversations. Dr. Becky wrote up some conversation starters that might help if you're worried your kid isn't reaching their full potential. * Thank you to our partners for making this episode possible: Ole Henriksen: Use the code DRBECKY30 for 30% off the Banana Bright+ Eye Crème LMNT: Get a free gift with your purchase at drinkLMNT.com/goodinside Girl Scouts: If you have a daughter in kindergarten through 12th grade, visit girlscouts.org to learn more. The Last Safe Town: Could Your Town Hold It Together? In most emergencies, people think about two choices: stay home or bug out. But there's another piece that matters just as much: the town you already live in. In this episode, we're looking at your actual town as a survival asset. The roads, water system, grocery stores, fuel, comms, schools, churches, public works, medical care, local businesses, and the people who keep the whole thing running. Could your town handle 72 hours? What about three weeks? What about three months? We talk about what could cut your town off, how weather and geography shape your risks, whether people and supplies can actually move, where your water and food really come from, how fuel and power keep the town functioning, and why public works might be one of the most important groups nobody thinks about until something breaks. We also get into local comms, gathering places, medical weak points, outside support, leadership, outsiders coming in, and how to score your town with a simple green, yellow, or red “hold-together” test. Your town is not automatically safe because it's small. It's not automatically doomed because it has limits. The real question is whether you know what's actually there and whether those things can hold under pressure. In today's episode we reference the following resources:Should I be induced? Evidence on the ARRIVE TrialPlanning Your Successful VBAC**********Welcome to the June Q&A! In today's episode, we begin with a listener who has some things to say about the term VBAC. Our questions begin with one from a new mother whose enthusiastic in-laws are eager to babysit her exclusively breastfed baby. The conversation is less about breastfeeding and more about expectations, trust and boundaries.Next, we answer one we've never been asked: "What do contractions actually feel like?" How's it possible this hasn't come up before?!Then, we discuss a common late-pregnancy scenario: a routine ultrasound that leads to concerns about a "big baby." When a healthy 38-week pregnant woman is told her baby's abdomen is measuring large, how much weight should she give to that information? As always, we finish with Quickies, covering cervical lips, high-lipase milk, pacifiers, coffee during pregnancy, milk blebs, antidepressants, swaddling, wake windows, dates, sex, retained placenta, induction, creatine, and a few personal questions about coffee preferences and family size.Have a question for a future Q&A? Ido Portal is one of the most original movement thinkers alive. He has spent decades studying the body across martial arts, acrobatics, yoga, dance, and ancient movement traditions, not to master any one of them, but to ask a deeper question: what does it actually mean to move well, and what does the body reveal when you finally start listening to it? In this conversation, we go long, covering ground that most movement conversations never reach. What We Dive Into:1.Most of us treat the body like a car to maintain, something we service occasionally for performance or appearance. Ido's entire framework starts from the opposite premise: the body is not a tool you use, it is what you are. That shift alone changes what practice means.2.What we attend to grows. What we neglect crumbles. Ido applies this principle everywhere, from babies in hospitals to athletes on the field. Bringing undivided attention to even one part of your body for one minute, with no music, no phone, no audience, begins a transformation most people have never experienced.3.The most important moment in Ido's own journey was admitting he didn't have what he was looking for. Not as defeat, but as a beginning. The person who thinks they already have a connection to their body is the one most closed off to finding it. Not knowing, and staying there, is the actual practice.Know Thyself, but not by yourself. You're eating "pretty well." You're moving your body. So why does it feel like your muscle is disappearing and your effort isn't paying off the way it used to? In this episode, I sit down with Liz Plosser, former editor-in-chief of Women's Health and a woman who has spent her entire career reporting on health and fitness, to talk about what changes in midlife and why the old rules stop working. Then we go deep on amino acids, what they actually are, why your body becomes less efficient at using them as estrogen declines, and why an essential amino acid supplement might be one of the smartest, simplest things you can add to your routine. We also break down the real difference between amino acids and creatine, why BCAAs may not be worth your money, and how to build a stack that actually fits a real life, not a biohacker's spreadsheet. If you've ever felt like your body stopped responding to the things that used to work, this episode will explain why, and more importantly, what to do about it. In This Episode, We Cover: How perimenopause changed Liz's approach to fitness after decades as a cardio-focused marathoner Why muscle loss accelerates in midlife and what that means for your metabolism, strength, and aging The injury that led Liz to fall in love with strength training and chase a 280-pound deadlift PR Why it's okay to want to look strong, lean, and confident, not just "healthy" What essential amino acids are and why your body can't use protein without all nine Why women become less efficient at absorbing amino acids from food as estrogen declines The difference between amino acids and creatine, and why you likely need both Why branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) may not be worth the hype or the money New research on creatine and brain health, including higher doses on high-demand days How to build a simple, realistic daily protein and supplement routine, especially if you're on a GLP-1 Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman who feels like her body just isn't responding the way it used to, no matter how "right" she's doing things. It's for women in perimenopause and menopause who are confused about protein, curious about amino acids and creatine, or tired of conflicting advice from every corner of the internet. It's also for anyone on a GLP-1 medication who needs a realistic way to protect muscle while eating less. If you want a stack that's simple, effective, and grounded in real research instead of trends, this one's for you. Visit getkion.com/hormone for 20% off! The ADHD advice that we see on social media is often not the advice that's going to help us the most. In fact, it's often the stuff that goes viral that can cause us more frustration when we try it and it doesn't work. So today, ADHD Therapist, Jenna Free, joins me to rank ADHD advice from the internet (from superior advice to advice you should ignore). After getting diagnosed with ADHD at age 32, Jenna developed a revolutionary approach to ADHD that has helped her and thousands of women.
Growing up as millennials, we were often told not to be too loud, not to ask for help, and to push our feelings down. Attachment therapist and author Eli Harwood joins us to unpack how our upbringings shaped us and how we can break generational cycles as parents. Eli opens with a powerful reframe: our parents truly did the best they could with what they knew. From there, we dive deep into what childhood trauma actually looks like (and why so many of us don't recognize it as trauma), how to build resilience in our kids, and why the way we parent almost always traces back to how we were parented. Whether you struggle with patience, saying no, or knowing when to discipline versus when to have a conversation, Eli offers practical, connection-focused tools to help us show up differently for our kids.Key Topics Covered:What secure attachment looks like and why Eli centers her work on connection and relationship rather than control and behavior. How to identify the childhood experiences you may be carrying into adulthood without realizing they are traumas.Finding the middle ground between raising independent kids and raising kids who feel safe asking for help. The number one predictor of long-term resilience in children and how to actively foster it.Why millennial parents may struggle with patience, and why the birthing parent often has less of it than their non-birthing partner.Punishment versus conversation: how to rethink your approach when your child does something wrong. Why saying no feels so hard for millennial parents and what to do if you want to change that pattern.CONNECT WITH ELI:Instagram & Threads (@attachmentnerd): https://www.instagram.com/attachmentnerd/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/attachmentnerdTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@attachmentnerdYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@attachmentnerdGet Your Copy of Eli's Book: https://amzlink.to/az09tHmrRU6NT LINKS AND RESOURCES: BETTERHELP: 10% off first month at: http://betterhelp.com/herselfLMNT: Free Sample Pack with purchase: drinkLMNT.com/HERSELF Let's connect!HERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.
Ketamine Therapy, MDMA, Psilocybin, and the Science of Psychedelic Assisted Healing Most people struggling with depression, anxiety, and trauma have never felt safe in their nervous system, and the treatments they have been prescribed are making that worse. This episode breaks down the neuroscience of psychedelic therapy, why ketamine is the safest and most accessible starting point, how MDMA triggers a BDNF dependent pathway that repairs trauma all the way down to the epigenetic code, and why your antidepressant may be blocking the very brain states required for real healing. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR -Order Dr. Rabin's Book ‘A Simple Guide to Being Alive': https://apolloneuro.com/pages/a-simple-guide-to-being-alive Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Dave Rabin, MD, PhD, a senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, Executive Director of The Board of Medicine, and co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Apollo Neuroscience. Dr. Rabin received his MD and PhD in neuroscience from Albany Medical College and specialized in psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has spent 20 years studying chronic stress and non-invasive therapies for treatment-resistant illness, and his primary research on MDMA assisted therapy for severe PTSD has demonstrated that trauma can be reversed at the epigenetic level, offering a genuine path to a cure. His upcoming book A Simple Guide to Being Alive publishes June 1, 2026 and is a science-backed manual for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by the modern world. Dave and Dr. Rabin break down why nearly 50% of people prescribed psychiatric medication never achieve remission, why SSRIs and SNRIs physically block the brain states required for emotional healing, and why the FDA rejected MDMA therapy after three trials showed an 88% response rate. They dig into the exact BDNF pathway that makes MDMA and ketamine so transformative, how psychedelics amplify safety learning in the amygdala at the molecular level, and why trauma passes down up to 14 generations through epigenetic code that can now be measured and repaired. They also cover why your breathing rate at the doctor's office is already a stress signal nobody is reading, how your smartphone puts your nervous system into a chronic fear state before you even get out of bed, and why ketamine is the right starting point for anyone curious about psychedelic therapy right now. You'll Learn: Why nearly 50% of psychiatric patients never get better and what treatment-resistant actually means How ketamine therapy works, why it is legal in every state, and why it is the safest place to start The exact BDNF pathway through which MDMA repairs fear extinction in the amygdala How MDMA assisted therapy produces measurable epigenetic repair of the cortisol receptor gene damaged by trauma Why SSRIs and SNRIs block the insula mediated brain states required for real emotional healing Why combining serotonergic psychedelics with SSRIs puts you at risk of life-threatening serotonin syndrome Why trauma passes down up to 14 generations and what you can do to stop the cycle now Why smartphones put your nervous system into a toxic overstimulation state before the day even starts How the FDA rejected MDMA therapy after 88% of patients responded and who paid to make that happen Thank you to our sponsors! - Qualia | If you want to take the guesswork out of maintaining high NAD+ levels as you age, go to www.qualialife.com/daveNAD to get clinically proven Qualia NAD+ backed by a 100 day money back guarantee and code DAVENAD at checkout gets you an extra 15% off. - iRestore | Reverse hair loss at www.irestore.com/DAVE and get exclusive savings on the iRestore Elite, use code DAVE - OneSkin | For a limited time, try OneSkin with 15% off at oneskin.co/DAVE. - LMNT | Right now you can get a free 8-count Sample Pack of LMNT's most popular drink mix flavors with any purchase at drinkLMNT.com/dave Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. Women have been told how we have to show up at work, in our relationships, in our families, in society at large, forever. And it turns out it's costing us way more than we thought. It's making us sick. My guest today, Sara Hirsh Bordo, is a 15-time award-winning documentary filmmaker and somebody who was hit with melanoma, breast tumors, Hashimoto's, and Epstein-Barr all at once. Instead of just treating it, she investigated it. She funded her own research of 1,000 women, the first-ever study on the relationship between empowerment and autoimmune conditions, and what she found was absolutely groundbreaking. Her study was endorsed by a former US surgeon general, and it's an absolute paradigm shift in how we think about autoimmune conditions. Sarah has since completely healed, and we're going to talk about exactly what she did in this episode.
Parents are being sold creativity like it's a subscription box. Workshops, kits, frameworks, scripts: the message being that your kid needs more imagination and it's your job to install it. Austin Kleon, author of Steal Like an Artist and Don't Call It Art, has a different take: your kid already has it. The imagination, the playfulness, the willingness to not-know — it's all there. The question isn't how to give it to them. It's how to stop blocking it. And maybe, while we're here, how to get a little of it back ourselves. Dr. Becky and Austin talk about what creativity actually needs to thrive (not a workshop), what so-called "problem kids" and great artists have in common, why your kid's obsession with garage doors is not a problem, the link between play and depression, the game that got Austin through the pandemic, and the teeth-brushing song Becky invented entirely by accident. Read Dr. Becky's ideas for how to be a playful parent when you don't feel like playing. * From the newborn days to the teen years, Good Inside now supports parents through every stage of childhood — with practical guidance for the moments that matter most. I'm all about people being able to do whatever they want with their bodies and their faces, and I think that the hot girl era is coming to an end. Abby's 40th birthday served as the perfect launching pad for an honest conversation about aging and all the feelings that come with it. With most of our 30s spent raising kids, we are stepping into this new decade with a fresh perspective, and we're keeping it real about the insecurities, the mindset shifts, and the things we actively do to feel and look our best. We also explore the power of having older women in our lives as role models, share a meaningful mantra from Abby's grandma, and wrap up with a reminder that making peace with aging is so much easier when you're surrounded by people who own it unapologetically.Key Topics Covered:Finding your personal balance between embracing aging and doing the things that make you feel confident and youthful. How dressing for your changing body can support a more positive relationship with it.The reality of working out as you get older, including injuries and setbacks, and knowing you're not alone in facing them. Why surrounding yourself with people who are unapologetic about their age can shift your entire outlook.LINKS AND RESOURCES:LMNT: Free Sample Pack with purchase: drinkLMNT.com/HERSELF BETTERHELP: 10% off first month at: http://betterhelp.com/herselfPatreon Book Club: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastHair Supplement: https://amzlink.to/az0kELnE6fNiVLet's connect!HERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

Why Your Bug Out Bag Sucks Everybody loves the idea of a bug out bag, but a lot of them are built more like fantasy survival gear collections than real emergency tools. In this episode, we break down why bug out bags fail: no destination, too much weight, untested gear, bad food, weak water plans, forgotten family needs, poor communication, expired supplies, and no real decision point for when to actually leave. A good bug out bag is not supposed to help you disappear into the woods forever. It should help you leave fast, stay functional, communicate, handle basic problems, and get to the next safe place. We also run through a quick bag audit you can use to check your own setup. Stay survived. I've always wondered how specifically having good relationships can decrease our likelihood of cancer or having a heart attack, and improve our immune systems and brain health. Well, I asked a Stanford Neuroscientist and his answers are absolutely fascinating. Dr. Ben Rein is an award-winning neuroscientist and lecturer at Stanford, and the author of the phenomenal new book, Why Brains Need Friends. We are talking about why hanging out with your friends floods your brain with a chemical cocktail that is basically a microdose of MDMA, why being married beats chemotherapy as the number one predictor of surviving cancer, why Botox and Tylenol and Advil are making it harder to make friends, yes, really, and why we should all probably get dogs and get our parents to get dogs if we want them to live a long time. You're going to come away with a ton of action steps to not only live longer and be healthier, but also just feel better every single day.

As parents, control feels like protection. It feels like we can prevent our kids' mistakes, soften their pain, and steer them away from decisions that might hurt them. But here's the truth: control protects us, not the relationship. In this episode, we sit down with board-certified child psychiatrist Dr. Willough Jenkins to talk about one of the trickiest parts of parenting: helping our kids navigate friendships. In this episode:Is it developmentally normal when kids suddenly want to drop a friend? How to support a child with an anxious attachment style when friendship gets hard. When (and whether) to get the other kid's parents involved. What to do when your child is hanging out with kids who don't bring out their best and being honest that our kids aren't always angels either. How to handle mean girl dynamics if you have a daughter going through it.Signs that your child may genuinely struggle with making friends, and what you can actually do about it.Tactics for staying a safe, trusted place your kids will actually come to when friendship gets tough.LINKS AND RESOURCES:Follow Dr. Willough on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drwilloughjenkins/Dr. Willough's Website: https://www.willoughjenkins.com/LMNT: Free Sample Pack with purchase: drinkLMNT.com/HERSELF HERSELF PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastLet's connect!HERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

Esther Blum, integrative dietitian and menopause expert, unpacks the estrogen supply chain crisis, leaving women without basic hormone care, while there are 25 erectile dysfunction medications on the market with zero shortages. But the conversation goes deeper: if your gut and liver detox pathways aren't functioning first, HRT may not work the way you're hoping. Esther breaks down the gut-liver-hormone axis, explains why 70% of women aren't detoxing their hormones properly, and makes the case for eating more — not less — in midlife. Plus: testosterone as the missing menopause hormone, why carbs at dinner might be the key to sleeping through the night, and why the zero F's era is the best-kept secret of menopause.

We are diving deep into the real reasons men are not doing their part in relationships, and exactly how you can help change that. Whether you want better sex, or for him to take on more of the mental load, or you want to know if you're even with the right person, or if the relationship is worth staying in, we're going to get into that today. I sit down with Zach Brittle, one of the only couples therapists in the entire world certified in both the Gottman method and Terry Real's Relational Life therapy. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Vanity Fair. Zach is so pragmatic and has really interesting advice on some of the trickiest issues out there. We also talk about what men secretly think and feel behind the scenes that they're not sharing, and we solve a ton of the real-life relationship struggles that you guys wrote in.
Paul Rosolie is a conservationist, adventurer, and the author of “Junglekeeper.” This conversation explores Paul's ardent case for ground-level conservation, the dire state of the Amazon, the indigenous wisdom that shaped him, his ill-fated brush with the Discovery Channel, encounters with uncontacted tribes, the crisis of meaning, and more. Along the way, Paul dismantles the notion that one person can't make a difference. I have mad respect for Paul. He's making it cool to be earnest. Enjoy! The Worst Possible Places to Be When SHTF In this episode, we're talking through the absolute worst places to be when everything goes sideways. Big cities, highways, airports, stadiums, schools, hospitals, grocery stores, gas stations, bridges, tourist spots, malls, underground spaces, courthouses, and government buildings all have one thing in common: when systems fail, people become the biggest variable. This isn't about living scared or avoiding every public place forever. It's about understanding where risk stacks up fast. Crowds, bottlenecks, limited exits, overwhelmed infrastructure, empty shelves, fuel shortages, bad information, and desperate people can turn a normal location into a serious problem quickly. We break down why each place can get dangerous, how things can fall apart, and what you can do now to avoid getting trapped in someone else's emergency. From keeping your vehicle above half a tank, to building a realistic get-home bag, to knowing alternate routes, to having family pickup plans, this episode is all about thinking ahead before the chaos starts. Women were left out of medical, nutrition, and exercise research for 16 years. They studied men, and then they told women we would get the same results by following the general health guidelines. In this episode, you're going to learn what the research actually says when women are the subjects. You're going to learn an easy shift to work with your hormones to get the sleep that you need, how to help your body effortlessly lose weight, what actually makes you happier and calmer, and what will help you live longer. I'm joined by Dr. Stacy Sims who has her PhD in exercise physiology with a focus on nutrition and sex differences. She spent years in her postdoc at Stanford studying how different interventions impact men and women differently. She has devoted her life to figuring out the real science of women's health, and today she is sharing her exact playbook with you.
