Martin Scorsese's film, Casino, takes us back to a time when Las Vegas was still the “wild west” and the mob ran gambling and damn near everything else in sin city. Vegas-teen Matt Baker watched Casino over and over again, trying to mimic the dapper gangsters portrayed by Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. Inspired by what he saw, Matt forms a clique of other high school students who start their own drug enterprise and call themselves “The Crew.” But when one member, Jared Whaley, decides wants out, Matt feels betrayed. That's when this copycat is inspired by Pesci's line as gangster “Nicky Santoro.” “Got a lot of holes in the desert and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. Except you gotta do it right.” Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? Go to https://www.reelz.com/podcasts/

Eisner-winning author and comic book historian Ken Quattro stops by for a special edition of It's Complicated. Also joining Wes are award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and Upstart publisher Gevian Dargan. Ken Quattro has always had a fascination with comic books and comic book history. This led him to reaching out to retired Black cartoonist Samuel Joyner to learn more about the life and career of Matt Baker. What started out as a simple correspondence ended up a 15 year journey of discovery. Quattro put together the forgotten history of black comic book artists in the 1940's, almost all of whom went uncredited. He chronicles his findings in Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Book, winning the Eisner for Best Comics-Related Book in 2021.   Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books Amazon Link: amazon.com/Invisible-Men-Artists-Golden-Comics/dp/1684055865 PRH Link: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/609355/invisible-men-the-trailblazing-black-artists-of-comic-books-by-ken-quattro/   ABOUT INVISIBLE MEN: THE TRAILBLAZING BLACK ARTISTS OF COMIC BOOKS Hear the riveting stories of Black artists who drew–mostly covertly behind the scenes–superhero, horror, and romance comics in the early years of the industry.   The life stories of each man's personal struggles and triumphs are represented as they broke through into a world formerly occupied only by whites. Using primary source material from World War II-era Black newspapers and magazines, this compelling book profiles pioneers like E.C. Stoner, a descendant of one of George Washington's slaves, who became a renowned fine artist of the Harlem Renaissance and the first Black artist to draw comic books. Perhaps more fascinating is Owen Middleton who was sentenced to life in Sing Sing. Middleton's imprisonment became a cause célèbre championed by Will Durant, which led to Middleton's release and subsequent comics career. Then there is Matt Baker, the most revered of the Black artists, whose exquisite art spotlights stunning women and men, and who drew the first groundbreaking Black comic book hero, Vooda!   Ken Quattro Bio Ken Quattro is the author of hundreds of book, magazine, and online articles. He has also provided source material for television programs and many other comics histories.   He attended both Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan, studying Fine Art and journalism. He currently resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan.   Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Monthly subscriptions receive bonus content and early access to some channel content. Leah recognisies that the goal of any coliving space isn’t about forcing connection, it’s about creating environments for it to happen. Dan Jackson In 2016, Dan left a 20-year career in the city to found UrbanShared a tech driven coliving operator in South West London. With plans to take coliving nationwide, he realised he couldn’t do it alone, so when he was approached to co-found co:home, a nationwide start-up coliving operator he jumped at the opportunity. Dan now brings this experience into co:home leading on the management process. Dan has a background in technology and operations having worked in some of the UK’s largest financial institutions during a 15-year career. What do you do, when your mother is in a spot of bother? You run to help…of course! That’s the situation the Countryfile and former One Show presenter Matt Baker found himself in last summer, when his mum Janice had a serious accident with some sheep, and was unable to continue with the day to day running of the family farm in the Durham Hills. Their story is documented in a four part series currently on More4 called Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales. Emma speaks to Janice and Matt. It's been announced that thousands of new, expectant or bereaved mothers will receive help and support for mental health problems through dozens of new dedicated hubs which are being set up across England. The hubs will bring together maternity services, reproductive health and psychological therapy under one roof as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. Around 6,000 women will receive care and treatment for a wide range of mental health issues from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth to others with a severe fear of childbirth. Emma gets reactions to the news from Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive of campaigning charity Centre for Mental Health and Dr Alain Gregoire, President of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. Another statue of a strong woman has made the headlines. Last year it was Mary Wollstonecraft. Now it's Greta Thunberg. A statue of the 18 year old environmentalist was unveiled in Winchester last week but some think it's a waste of money. Emma is joined by Christine Charlesworth, the statue's creator, who's not only made Greta during lockdown but two other British feminist icons as well. Susan Spindler's first novel Surrogate tells the story of Ruth who, at the age of 54, volunteers to carry a baby for her daughter, who has just had her seventh miscarriage. But how selfless is Ruth's kind offer? She has done all of the research, taken the hormones, done the tests, thought of everything. What she doesn't know is how being her daughter's surrogate will make her feel and the upheaval it will cause in all of her relationships. Susan tells Emma how she researched the story.
