In this two-part episode, we have Yi Chien Jade Ho on anti-gentrification activism in Vancouver's Chinatown and Judith Shapiro on environmentalism in China. We are ending our spring 2024 season with a collaboration between NüVoices and four students from the University of British Columbia's Human Rights in a Globalized World class. Over the course of last semester, these students conducted interviews and tied their research into their coursework. Part I (which starts at 1:25) is with Yi Chien Jade Ho, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria, about her anti-gentrification efforts and tenant organizing in Vancouver's Chinatown. With students Vanessa Matsubara and Kylla Castillo, Yi Chien discusses her work protesting the Keefer 105 Project. Part II (which starts at 21:26) is Dr. Judith Shapiro of American University on the intersection of social and political influences that shape environmental challenges in China. In November 2023, both China and the U.S. pledged to work together to increase renewable energy sources and lower carbon emissions. But what are the unexamined effects of China's environmental policy implementation? In this episode, students Jake Yuen and Ariyana Dina seek to answer these questions as they consult Dr. Shapiro's expertise on China's environmental movements and policy. Many thanks to UBC course coordinator Gaylean Davies for working with us.

To learn more about job search strategy for F-1 international students, visit https://www.icaway.com/ I grew up in Bangkok, Thailand and when I moved to the U.S. in 2014, I was so excited about starting my new chapter! But after months of job hunting, I became very frustrated and disappointed because it was not easy to land my dream job since I wasn't born and raised in the US! I didn't know how to market myself! I didn't know how to communicate my brand to American employers. I didn't know how to make people like me enough to eventually become referrals for my dream company. Nobody gave me proper advice about how to communicate my work authorizations as an immigrant! I experienced unique barriers that most American friends of mine will never understand! I evaluated my situation, I came up with a new game plan and finally discovered how to market myself as an international professional. I built new connections from scratch and secured a 6-figure salary job at one of the big four consulting firms in Chicago. The firm said they receive about 500,000 job applications a year and only 3.5 percent of them get hired and I got hired. This is what I'm here for! At ICAway, my mission is to help YOU achieve the same outcome I want to help international students or first-generation immigrants overcome their obstacles and be able to successfully market themselves to American employers. If you are a school advisor advocating an IS career, I really admire your dedication and hard work in supporting the international student community! I'd like you to know that ICAway is here to support you and your work in order to achieve our common goal - helping international students launch their first career in the US. This is the new season of the ICAway podcast that's designed to help international students launch their first career in the US. The international student job search situation is very unique! When compared with domestic students, International students have to deal with more intense time constraints in their career search. like having to get hired within 90 days after the OPT work authorization starts, and getting work visa sponsorship before the expiration of their OPT. This podcast will help you start making the right gameplan, and build a career brand and networking strategy. You need a game plan because success happens when you start early, follow a proven strategy, and never give up. Let's start by looking at some true stories of people that have used the information that I will be discussing in this podcast. They are international students at ICAway who landed their dream jobs at top global companies because they had solid career brands and networking skills. All of them bypassed all the traditional job application processes because they know how to optimize their career brand and network with the right people. In our next episodes, I'll start sharing the formulas they use to help them land their dream jobs. Stay tuned! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/icaway/support

3 Main Points: Finding and recognizing the dreams, needs, and abilities of all learners. How do we cheer people on and step out of our world to show gratitude and love to make the world better? Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late. Laurie McIntosh and George Couros have an energetic and inspiring conversation about education, "dreams, needs, and abilities" as described by Tom Hierck and reflected on by Laurie in this podcast, and the impact of consistent kindness. The two also talk about Laurie's upcoming book, Teachers These Days which she co-writes with Jody Carrington! Both George and Laurie are currently residing in Alberta, Canada, so the two talk about education in their province and even hold a fun side conversation about hockey rivalries! One of the most powerful stories that Laurie shares in this podcast and in her upcoming book is one she experienced with a co-worker and how she recognized the different ways that people show appreciation, especially when we are consistent with our kindness over extended periods of time. Laurie acknowledges that she is limited on energy at times and shares the very real exhaustion that she feels, she also shares how she continues to be kind, present, and mindful despite that exhaustion. Listen to the end to hear what George says that actually brings Laurie to tears (payback for when she made George cry on a plane)! The episode closes with this advice from George: "Give credit, give compliments, give praise to people too early as opposed to too late." This episode is the final in a three part series where I had my students record an audio of some aspect of the universe. This is after we have learned a lot of different things about space and this was their chance to be the "teacher".This episode focuses on cosmological issues like dark energy, the expanding universe, the Drake equation, and telescopes used for sensing the vastness of the cosmos. These students WILL teach you something and I am very impressed by the work they did for this series. I hope you enjoy what they have to say. Remember to keep looking up at the stars!
In this episode the team tackles more of your questions including fun things like "What about dinosaurs?" and "How do you find purpose in life?" It's a fun conversation in so many ways.
In this the second of a three part series, I asked my astronomy students to record a two minute explanation of some aspect of space. In this episode, the theme is stars. This is a group of grade 11 and 12 students who are getting their senior science high school credit by learning about space. Although they are representing their knowledge in lots of different ways in class, I felt that using this electronic and public medium would be a great experience for them...and maybe spur them on to continue to add to the global "body of knowledge" on their own, with their own topics.I really appreciate their efforts here to incorporate. some research, knowledge and sometimes a bit of fun as they talk about the stars. Enjoy!
As a teacher, we are always looking for ways for our students to express their knowledge. I have always felt that the best way to firm up in your mind the things that you have learned, is to talk about it and better yet, teach it!So I asked my students to pick a topic they have learned in class (choice), research a bit more about it (life long learning), and prepare a two minute "lesson" to record for this podcast (communication). I got such a wide variety of topics that I decided to group them by theme, and this episode's theme is the solar system. This is their first forage into the world of podcasting and I hope that for some of them, it won't be their last. You will hear that some of them have a real knack for this and likely would make a great podcaster themselves. I'm looking forward to the future to see what else they can create. This may be the first step to a long and enjoyable journey. In the meantime, listen to some of my students speak on a few topics about...the solar system.
The Port City Students Podcast is back with some of your friends having a great conversation trying to answer some of the questions submitted during our "Explained" series. In the next few weeks we'll be answering more questions, but this one is a great way to get things started.

Here in part two of our conversation on the 'American' Gospel, Bryan and Scott ask whether or not our personal preferences or opinions are Gospel based, or selfishly based.
The hellish summer bushfires and the current COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a year most of us would rather forget. But one group, in particular, might find 'moving on' slightly more difficult than the rest of the population: students. Not only have the above events and school closures disrupted their lives, they, like many of us, are experiencing bouts of trauma and distress. To understand these issues more and what schools and teachers can do to improve student wellbeing, Campus Review spoke to Professor Helen Cahill from the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Cahill and her colleagues recently published a report on the subject, titled 'Natural disasters and pandemic: supporting student and teacher wellbeing after a crisis.' In this podcast, Cahill underscores the centrality of the school in helping students deal with distress and trauma. As she says, “Often for children it’s their school teachers who are the only other significant adults in their lives." Cahill also calls schools "hope machines for the future" and places where students can escape the worries of the world and focus on routine learning to help ground them. The podcast also includes excellent tips for maintaining both student and teacher wellbeing, such as acknowledging good work by students and naming and modelling effective coping practices for students when they feel distressed and overwhelmed. For teachers, Cahill urges them "to take their foot off the pedal" when required in the learning environment, be realistic about what is achievable, and try not to internalise any blame and shame. After all, "teachers are first responders" as Cahilll rightly points out.
What is the 'American' Gospel? In Part 1 of this conversation, Bryan and Scott talk through it and the effects it is having on the church.
