Drawing inspiration from George Couros' work, including The Innovator's Mindset and Forward Together, the conversation explores what it really means to build learner-centred schools in a world that keeps changing the rules.Jason and Garth unpack innovation not as a buzzword, but as a posture—one rooted in curiosity, relationships, and the courage to keep things fresh. From professional learning that actually energizes educators, to the power of networks beyond our own schools, this episode is a reminder that meaningful growth happens when we stay open, tell better stories, and refuse to get too comfortable with “the way it's always been done.”Take AwaysEducation is evolving—and that's what makes it thrilling if we lean into it.Learner-centred schools don't happen by accident; they're built intentionally.Innovation isn't a program—it's a habit we practice together.Great professional development should spark curiosity, not compliance.Meaningful experiences matter just as much for adults as they do for students.Growth accelerates when we learn with and from people beyond our own buildings.Change doesn't arrive on its own—we have to go after it.Schools innovate best when communities are part of the story.Capturing mantras, moments, and stories keeps learning human.Staying fresh requires noticing when the “smell” has changed—and responding.“The future ain't what it used to be.”“Don't get used to the smell.”“Kids these days… kids these days.”Chapters00:00 – Welcome to Lassoing Leadership04:28 – Rethinking Innovation and the Innovator's Mindset08:15 – What Educators Owe Learners in a Changing World12:15 – Culture, Curiosity, and Continuous Learning13:59 – Forward Together and Paying Attention to New Smells18:05 – Learning Beyond Education and the Power of Networks20:50 – What's Ahead: Guests, Ideas, and Staying Curious

Couros reflects on the challenges faced by educators today, including overwhelming demands and the need for authentic leadership, highlighting the significance of student input in shaping educational practices and the necessity for principals to maintain integrity and transparency. Quotes: “Being an authentic leader means leading with honest and sincere intentions while maintaining a high level of integrity.” - Dr. Marcus J. Belin “To truly transform the educational experience, school leaders must actively involve students in the decision-making process. By creating platforms for student voice, such as student councils, advisory boards, or regular feedback sessions, leaders empower students to contribute their perspectives, ideas, and aspirations. This not only fosters a sense of ownership and engagement but also ensures that decisions are made with a deep understanding of student needs and aspirations.” - Dr. Mary Hemphill “The point is, it's not what you have when you lead at school. It's what you do with what you have. It's not the plane. It's the pilot.” -Mike Kleba “If you are considering trying something new in your school, ask the people you serve what they believe is no longer needed. And if the answer is, ‘Well, there is nothing that we are doing currently that we can feasibly get rid of,' then maybe the answer becomes not to take on that new initiative or idea.” -George Couros Links: Books by Allyson Apsey - https://allysonapsey.com/books/ What Makes a Great Principal - https://www.amazon.com/What-Makes-Great-Principal-Leadership/dp/1948334739 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. George Couros reflects on a book he read while he was training for the Disney Marathon! In this episode, you will hear Couros share three thoughts from the book, Run the Mile You're In by Ryan Hall. Be sure to check out this episode for a heartwarming story about how the ideas shared by Hall connected to Couros' beloved dog, Odom. Quotes: “I believe that we each have a mission to accomplish and that we have been designed in such a way that we are not lacking anything to accomplish it. Everything we need is already inside of us. We just have to find it and figure out how to cultivate it.” - Ryan Hall “I had to remind myself to celebrate others' achievements because what makes me special, important, or of worth has nothing to do with my or anyone else's performance. I shouldn't look down on myself for not doing as well as someone else because the goal isn't to be better than everyone else. My goal, when I was at my best, was always to be the best version of me that I could be. I found that if I was inspired by the breakthrough of others, then often those breakthroughs became my catalyst for believing I could do it too and experiencing my own breakthroughs.” - Ryan Hall “Sometimes our biggest victories aren't the races we win. Sometimes they're the personal battles we win along the way.” - Ryan Hall Links: The OC - https://www.theoc.net/ Run the Mile You're In (Book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Run-Mile-Youre-Finding-Every/dp/0310354374 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. This is based on the weekly email from George Couros that you can find here: https://mailchi.mp/7a6862cb6558/something-personal-professional-and-profound-email-15554026 A Snippet from the email: If you find yourself looking to be reaffirmed in your thinking, it might feel good, but eventually, it can lead you to making decisions that don't benefit you or your community. It is essential to recognize that being challenged doesn't always mean changing your position or, more importantly, your principles and values. Sometimes, understanding the viewpoints and perspectives of others can actually help reaffirm your thoughts and solidify your position, offering a differing perspective that may teach you how to present your ideas better. But I have learned that if you are focused on always being right, you will surround yourself with those who agree with you. If you want to do what is right, you will look to find those who challenge you. That is the best way to keep your ego in check. __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Episode Summary In this engaging conversation, Charles Williams and George Couros explore the themes of innovation in education, the importance of critical thinking, and the role of technology in the classroom. They discuss the challenges educators face in seeking quick fixes and the necessity of fostering a culture of inquiry and reflection. Couros emphasizes the need for meaningful professional development and the importance of teaching students to navigate technology responsibly. The discussion culminates in a reflection on leadership's role in driving educational change and the value of depth over breadth in learning. Innovation in education should not solely rely on technology. Educators must reflect on their practices and adapt to better serve students. Critical thinking should be encouraged in both students and educators. Professional development should be meaningful and tailored to educators' needs. Teaching responsible technology use is crucial for student success. Depth of knowledge in a few areas is more beneficial than superficial knowledge in many. Leadership plays a vital role in fostering an innovative educational environment. Educators should focus on creating engaging learning experiences for students. The importance of collaboration and sharing ideas among educators cannot be overstated. Educators should model the behaviors they wish to see in their students. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thecounternarrative/support

I have seen many posts on social media encouraging people to read '100 Books in a Year!' Reading is an essential part of being a learner, but from my perspective, it is better to read fewer books, reflect deeply, and create something with the knowledge that you have accumulated than to speed read and change nothing." - George Couros “When I write blog posts, you'll notice often I'll say, ‘here's A, B and C. Welcome back to a new episode of EPIC Book Review! In this episode, George Couros shares his reflection of the book, Hidden Potential, by Adam Grant. Couros dives into a series of quotes after sharing a summary of the book that he pulled from ChatGPT. Be sure to watch or listen to this episode to hear some Couros' insights and thoughts after reading this book by Adam Grant! Quotes: "When you procrastinate, you're not avoiding effort. You're avoiding the unpleasant feelings that the activity stirs up. Sooner or later, though, you realize that you're also avoiding getting where you want to go.” -Adam Grant "... the best way to learn something is to teach it. You remember it better after you recall it—and you understand it better after you explain it. All it takes is embracing the discomfort of putting yourself in the instructor's seat before you've reached mastery. Even just being told you're going to teach something is enough to boost your learning.” -Adam Grant "...kids tend to absorb foreign languages faster than adults. Yes, they benefit from greater brain plasticity (the developing mind rewires more quickly than the developed one) and less interference from prior knowledge (they're not entrenched in the grammatical rules of one language). But they're also largely immune to the fear of embarrassment and the discomfort of making mistakes. Children don't hold back on communicating—they start babbling as soon as they know some new words. They're not scared of feeling stupid or being judged.” - Adam Grant "Basic literacy makes it possible to leverage character skills more effectively—to be proactive in learning more and learning faster. Prosperity rises as people become more capable of absorbing new ideas and filtering out old ones.” - Adam Grant "Instead of only looking for geniuses where we expect to find them, we can reach humanity's greatest potential by cultivating the genius in everyone." - Adam Grant Links: Hidden Potential by Adam Grant on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Potential-Science-Achieving-Greater/dp/0593653149/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Innovators-Mindset-Empower-Learning-Creativity/dp/0986155497 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. This episode of The 10 Minute Teacher was a lot of fun. Not only did I get to interview my principal, Jonathan Dyal, but my film class, the "Sherwood Showstoppers," filmed the interview. (I'm so proud of how much they are learning!) After a tweet I sent out in October 2023, George Couros and Allyson Apsey invited me to write a chapter about Jonathan in their book What Makes a Great Principal: The Five Pillars of Effective Leadership out this year. (You can listen to my earlier interview with George about what truly makes a great principal and the five pillars shared in the book.) Principal Dyal shares his philosophy of walking the halls frequently to stay connected with teachers and students, emphasizing his proactive rather than reactive philosophy. We talked about his strategies to build trust with teachers and how he uses observations positively. (I like his philosophy of observations; that is what the tweet was about in the first place.) He also discusses how he builds positive relationships with students in a way that improves student culture. This is a unique interview in that I see this firsthand and know the positive results it has when principals leave their offices, walk the halls, and spend time in classrooms. This approach is powerful, and it works! Show notes and transcript: https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e866 Disclosure of Material Connection: This episode includes some affiliate links.
