In a world of shifting sands, where kids are nudged toward algorithms, apps, and endless activities, S. D. Smith returns to the 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to talk about giving our children something sturdier to stand on. Ginny and Sam share stories of real-life hospitality, hikes in West Virginia, rainbows over the New River Gorge, and the way shared adventures and shared stories bind families together. From the Green Ember universe to his newest book Helmer and the Dragon Tomb, Sam describes his mission to offer “new stories with an old soul” that root kids in courage, virtue, and hope—stories that still matter fifty years after we're gone. Together they wrestle with the pressure modern parents feel: rising anxiety about the future, the lure of AI shortcuts, and the constant competition for our kids' attention. Sam and Ginny make a compelling case that reading and writing are not outdated school tasks, but deeply human practices that shape a child's inner world, imagination, and even their sense of calling. You'll hear practical ideas for “tricksy parenting” that makes reading the reward, setting cozy book “traps,” inviting dads into the culture of story, and helping young writers grow in skill instead of outsourcing their creativity to machines. This episode is a gentle but galvanizing invitation to choose books over bots, shared chapters over scrolling, and to give our kids a living connection to something timeless. See everything S.D. In this episode, I'm joined by local politician Dan Helmer, who represents Virginia's 10th District in southern Fairfax County. I first met Dan when he visited my son's Boy Scout troop, and I've seen firsthand how dedicated he is to serving the Northern Virginia community. In this conversation, we explore his journey into public service, the realities of working in local government, and his practical advice for everyday people who want to get involved and make a difference. This episode serves as a powerful reminder that civic engagement begins locally and that anyone can play a role in creating positive change. Eric shares his insights on how to modernize mission-critical systems without compromising performance. Learn about the misconceptions about tech modernization, the importance of agility and flexibility in tech stacks, and the shift from reactive to proactive IT roles.-------------------Key Takeaways:The importance of modernizing critical systems without diving headfirst into vendor-driven migrations to the cloud.Transparency in operations and involving end-users early in the process can build trust and ensure smoother transitions.By optimizing existing configurations and processes before implementing new technologies, organizations can achieve significant cost savings and efficiency gains.------------------- “ When you show organizations that you genuinely want to help them by showing them all the different options that they have in an agnostic way, it's a really best way to build fantastic relationships and keep that engagement simple and strategic. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, Zoom went from steady growth to hyperscale almost overnight, even generating a backlog of a million tickets. Sarah Riley was a finance leader in the company at the time. She joins CJ to talk about what she learned from the experience and how it impacted her in her current role as CFO of dbt Labs. She also explains the influence of Helmer's Seven Powers framework on her strategic decisions. The discussion covers how Sarah's evolved pricing models, and helped bring product-led and sales-led growth together into a single go-to-market strategy at dbt Labs. She breaks down how she uses big systems thinking to build out a finance org, how to create healthy off-ramps for pilots, and what's actually okay to break when “moving fast and breaking stuff”. She also touches on the current use cases for AI in finance and for turning your team from “doers to reviewers”.—LINKS:Sarah Riley on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahjriley/dbt Labs: https://www.getdbt.com7 Powers: The Foundations of Business Strategy: https://7powers.com/CJ on X (@cjgustafson222): https://x.com/cjgustafson222Mostly metrics: http://mostlymetrics.comRELATED EPISODES:Wasted Capital and Where to Find It: The CFO's Guide to Spoilage Levers Leakages: —TIMESTAMPS:(00:00) Preview and Intro(02:18) Sponsor – Pulley | Navan | NetSuite(05:53) Being at Zoom at the Start of the Pandemic(10:14) Challenges Caused by the Influx of Customers(14:06) Takeaways From Sarah's Time at Zoom: M&A and Build Versus Buy(15:49) Sponsor – Planful | Tabs | Rippling Spend(19:38) Taking Advantage of Your High Share Price for M&A(20:56) What dbt Labs Does(24:27) Pricing Evolutions at dbt Labs: Freemium and Open-Source(27:51) Seat-Based, Usage-Based, Hybrid, or Outcome-Based Pricing(30:27) Pros and Cons of a Free Component(32:17) Finance and Sales in dbt's Evolving Go-to-Market Strategy(34:09) The Evolution of dbt Labs' ICP(35:09) The Helmer 7 Powers Framework(40:39) Being a Big Systems Thinker While Building a Finance Org(44:16) Moving and Iterating Quickly: Creating Healthy Off-Ramps for Pilots(46:19) What You Can and Can't Break When “Moving Fast and Breaking Stuff”(47:32) The Current State of AI and Use Cases in Finance(51:20) Long-Ass Lightning Round: Boundary Definition(52:08) Advice to Younger Self(52:56) Finance Software Stack(55:20) Craziest Expense Story—SPONSORS:Pulley is the cap table management platform built for CFOs and finance leaders who need reliable, audit-ready data and intuitive workflows, without the hidden fees or unreliable support. Green Ember friends, you are going to love this one! I had the absolute joy of sitting down with S. D. (Sam) Smith and Zach Franzen to chat about an epic new adventure in the Green Ember universe: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb! For years, readers (including my son Isaac) have been asking for Helmer's origin story — and now it's finally here. Not only will we get a brand-new full-length novel, but Green Ember fans can also also enjoy an action-adventure video game that brings the story to life in a whole new way! And get this: the game is designed to be family-friendly with no ads, no micro-transactions, and no creepy internet people. “All of life is a battle against fear. We fight it on one front, and it sneaks around to our flank.”S.D. Smith's book, The Green Ember, wonderfully weaves a tale of adventure, family, friendship, betrayal and conquering fear. We meet Picket Longtreader and his sister, Heather, as they are forced to go on the run after they return home to find it on fire and their parents and baby brother missing.A wolf attack forces Heather and Picket into a cave. Thankfully in the nick of time, they are rescued by their uncle and a rabbit named Smalls who take them to Cloud Mountain. All the rabbits are working together to fight against evil forces that are trying to overtake them. Their beloved King Jupiter had been betrayed by someone in the Longtreader family so Heather and Picket do not have the red carpet rolled out for them if you know what I mean. Emma was not like the other rabbits, she was helpful and kind to the newcomers.Helmer is a big brute of a rabbit who keeps to himself. Picket wants Helmer to train him to be a fighter. Helmer calls him Ladybug. The training is tough when “Everything is a weapon.” Will the rabbit community be strong enough to get peace from their enemies? “You can choose what you believe, Shuffler (Picket's other nickname), but you can't choose what's true.”Yes, dear listeners, “Healing is on the horizon, but fire comes first. Bear the flame.” Are you ready to meet these endearing characters and join the journey?

What does it mean that God hears? Can a God who is "pure act" be affected in such a way? What does this mean for those whom God hears? Who are those people? Join Benjamin Phillips as he asks such questions of Charles Helmer IV, author of The Lord Who Listens: A Dogmatic Inquiry into God as Hearer (Brill, 2024). More about the book: In The Lord Who Listens, Charles C. Helmer IV draws on Holy Scripture and the theology of Karl Barth to offer a theological intepretation of God's hearing. Prioritizing this neglected biblical theme, Helmer develops a theological grammar for speaking of God's hearing that maintains a strong creator-creature distinction and then proceeds to demonstrate the profound implications God's hearing has for the doctrines of anthropology, Christology and, thus, for understandings of the gospel. In contrast to passibilist-liberationist strategies, God's hearing is argued to furnish existentially and theologically superior resources for those who cry out to be heard by God. TitleA Portrait in Leadership: Women in EPM with Oracle Barbie aka Kate HelmerA doll by any other nameKata Helmer, aka Oracle Barbie formerly known as Hyperion Barbie, Oracle Ace Director, and oh yes ODTUG board member is just one person, but oh my, what an accomplished one. I've always been intrigued by Kate's alias: she's quite obviously a professional of some import and yet names herself after a child's doll. Why?Subversion vs. celebrationBarbie (the doll, not the guest of this episode in the Women in EPM series) – or at least I thought so before recording this episode – sort of has a not totally awesome reputation. How wrong I was (again, Cameron, again?) and, having been the host (and listened to the episode eleventy times during the edit), how sure I am there can be real difference between a man's and a woman's perspective. Or I was just wrong. Or why not both?Kate views Barbie as an exemplar of a woman that can do anything. Beyond the popularity of Barbie as a doll and the success of the recent Barbie movie, there are any number of academic posts on the subject. So is “Oracle Barbie” a sly flip of an incorrect impression or an overt embrace of a powerful woman? Listen and find out.NB – I was strictly a 12 inch GI Joe (surely the only real one – those Wee Willie Winkie ones are sort of an action figure abomination) fan and they taught me that camping is fun, which although a nice leisure activity, was not a transformative life effect. The path to master data managementKate's journey from the defense industry to Hallmark to consulting with an ever-increasing emphasis on managing the data that defines data is interesting. What I also find interesting that Kate was introduced to Essbase in a manner similar to mine: her manager asked her to take a look at Hyperion System 9 and the rest is history. Performance Management has many branches but its roots are the same.Just who is your favorite serial killer?EPM Conversation episodes have a “rule of 3” where the guests tell us what their favorite three books, movies, and people in history are. Nowhere in that list is the subject of serial killers although I suppose opening it up to “people in history” could include them. Don't believe me? Go to about 52:25 to hear the immortal words. “You're not a true crime junkie until you have a favorite serial killer”. All I can think of is this song. The rest of the storyThere's more, much more than the above précis. The only way for you to know is for you to listen to Kate's episode.Join us, won't you?

So the story we are about to talk about has a huge timing problem. The Democratic primary in the 10th Congressional District is being rocked at the last possible minute by allegations from an anonymous woman who was a member of the Loudoun Democratic Committee who says the frontrunner in the primary, Delegate Dan Helmer, groped her breast at a political event in 2018. The first outlet to report on the story was NOTUS, which is associated with the Allbritton Journalism Institute. The Loudoun Times-Mirror also laid out all the known facts and the timeline. And now five of the other Democrats in the congressional primary are calling for Helmer to drop out of the race.In this primary election, a PAC for Republican candidate Hung Cao has become a source of controversy for how it spent its money; another PAC has attracted attention because it was created to attack Democratic candidate Eileen-Filler-Corn. What's going on with PACs and their influence in Virginia politics? In the 7th Congressional District, the candidates who have raised the most amount of money are veterans--Democrats and Republicans alike. Same thing in the neighboring 10th Congressional District in Loudoun County, where a bumper crop of candidates is vying for attention.
