POPULARITY
Places of refuge are important for nurturing our spiritual lives. But what counts as one, and where do we find it? This is Angela's last Sunday in the pulpit before her sabbatical. She will return November 3. Music: Guest musicians Sue Young and Rusty Nelson

Who Gets to Vote? Ohio Issue 2Ohio voters will decide this fall whether noncitizens can vote in local elections. State Issue 2, which would change the state constitution if a https://www.ohiosos.gov/globalassets/ballotboard/2022/2022-11_issue2_certifiedballotlanguage.pdf (majority votes "yes"), proposes that only adult U.S. citizens who legally reside and are registered to vote in Ohio for at least 30 days can cast a ballot in future state and local elections. Backers of the amendment say it's important to uphold the integrity of citizenship, while opponents argue it's an unnecessary part of a trend to cut down on voting access. I am a mixed media artist inspired by fantasy and dark whimsy.I am fascinated by expressive face and animals and I love to create dreamy portraits. My work evolves in many layers and is often accompanied by a story or poem that comes to me along the creative journey.I studied Fine Art and Design and also Fashion Design and over years of creating I have worked as a glass engraver, run several galleries, and designed and even created headdresses and tiaras for a Bridal House for a time.I consider myself a life long student and also discovered in the past few years how much I enjoy sharing the skills and techniques I have developed, offering workshops here in beautiful Cornwall, UK and then in 2019 I launched my first online classes and I am so grateful to be connecting with many students and artists around the world in this way.http://www.sujatistudio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/sujati_art_studio/https://www.youtube.com/user/sujatiart/videoshttps://www.facebook.com/SujatiArtStudiohttps://www.pinterest.co.uk/sujatidesigns/

Prince Andrew has hit the news regarding his connection with Epstein the billionaire who was jailed for under age sex trafficking....and has since allegedly committed suicide...and Andy has been accused of being involved which the Palace has loudly denied....and as you can imagine the press are having a field day... We have been going on for ages about the standard of entertainment on the television....well we were right....recent viewing figures show that almost 50% of the viewing public now stream...preferring Netflix and Amazon to the tripe that is on normal TV....can they not see this....it's a bit like the BBC refusing to play pop music back in the late 50s...so everyone listened to Luxembourg and pirate radio...then they eventually got the message....how do these buffoons get these top jobs.....we don't want to watch soaps...we don't want to watch cookery programmes...we don't want to watch appendix operations in A & E...... There has been a new coin made to commemorate D Day....it is a gold coin with it's edge shaped like the Normandy coast...which is great....but the advert tells us there have only been 4,999 produced....couldn't they manage ONE more?...or did they run out of gold?.... We have recently discussed this new chat show "The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan"....which I hoped would improve on the usual tired formats of the likes of Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross..... The song this week is one I wrote for one of my female session singers....she was a good friend of mine and had a great voice...her name is Sue Young and she did the clubs as a duo with her husband Frank...

.A few days of hot sunshine has taken us by surprise....hottest place in Europe we are told...it won't last but while it does it creates some strange male species....the females are fine ..they appear in their shorts and T shirts and are easy on the eye...but the men...hmm....out come the huge baggy shorts...the stripped T shirts over their generous guts plus huge trainers....not forgetting the baseball cap and sunglasses....these are middle aged men trying to look trendy...and failing...they even have this strange walk proving they have "still got it"...what puzzles me is what do they see when they look in the mirror?....and they are everywhere....but generally after a few days the weather breaks and it's back to normal. 2.When I formed my recording company I had a demo service whereby I would advertise for people to send me their rough tapes of their songs (some VERY rough) and I would knock them into shape for them to present to publishers etc....I did 200 of these which paid for my studio...I had to deal with guys singing in the bath...answering the phone halfway through without turning their tape off etc etc....most were hilarious and sadly going nowhere but occasionally I would get a classic....an example was from a regular customer who was a judge in Ireland....his songs weren't commercial but very clever....one in particular which I can still remember was called "Time Flies By" and asked the question as to why we fought wars against each other for reasons that few of us know when the real enemy is time...which is the true relentless foe......I orchestrated it and sang it with my girl session singer Sue Young....a very interesting song by a clever man... 3.I had to laugh at the ANSWER to the Scottish alcohol problem....they are putting the prices of the booze up....brilliant.....a £1.50 small bottle of cider is now £5.....oh yeah that will solve the problem I don't think ...all this will do is give the breweries £3.50 clear profit.....who do they think they are kidding??....the answer is to STOP selling it !!!....alcoholics will buy the booze one way or another which creates the worry as to where they get the cash....I'd love 5 minutes with the bonehead who came up with this idea....I'm sure those who are not alcoholics...which is the majority...are delighted with this idea. 4.I have been watching the world snooker on the telly...and really enjoying it....I can play snooker but not very well so it is great to see these top class players making it look so easy....and how they have the concentration and stamina to go the whole distance...it really is good stuff BUT...what we can do without is the constant unnecessary so called commentary from the likes of John Virgo and a few others....constantly predicting what shot will be played next and getting it wrong....let's just watch the game !!!....there are times when silence works ... it doesn't need filling with drivel....and it's nearly time for the Eurovision again....don't hold out much hope for our entry but we never know....they had the Brotherhood of Man on telly discussing it....looking a bit worse for wear ...aren't we all. 5.And speaking of past pop stars the song this week is one I wrote a while back remembering some of the forgotten stars...some of which have re-emerged since I wrote the song.....should bring back a few memories "The Ballad of The Forgotten Pop Stars"

Who is the person that has impacted you the most? Often, we may report that it was a teacher or a mentor that helped guide us, shape us, and or changed our lives. Therefore, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Alysa gives a Best Forevers shout-out to teachers, coaches, mentors, and advisers by talking about the teachers who impacted her, sharing listener letters about their favorite teachers, and interviewing the Director of Academic Advising at University of Southern Florida, Cayla Lanier, and professor friends K. Sue Young and Howard Travis from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Specifically, Cayla and Alysa talk about how we can be that “person” to students by developing relationships with them while Sue and Howard share their friendship origin story with Alysa and talk about being student-centered as well as how students can build relationships with their professors. So, put aside what you know about teachers, and start to consider the genuine and authentic relationships among teachers and students! Share Your Friendship Stories with Alysa! The song I’ve sent you this week was from my more “commercial” era (lol)…..it’s sung by a friend of mine called Sue Young who had a great voice … she did the clubs as well but had a superb session voice…I used to call her “One Take” Sue…..I used to have a demo service where people would send me their songs in rough form (sometimes just a voice) and I would knock them into shape for them to send to publishers…and Sue would sing the female parts…she would have a couple of listens then hit it in one go…she was wonderful to work with. This was a song I wrote for her….we got radio play which gave her some publicity and some extra gigs. I used to use a few session girls singers…one being Pauline Daniels and another Julie Bright…these were the days before the modern trend of females shouting and yelling out songs and destroying them. I watched a programme called “Brucie’s Hall of Fame”….which was supposed to be presented by Bruce Forsyth…but as he’s not well his place was taken by Alexander Armstrong (who we talked about the other week)….he had artists on who were paying tribute to the stars they were inspired by….a good idea but sadly it didn’t come off at all…..Beverly Knight paid tribute to Sam Cooke with a yelling session…I like her very much but I think she is a bit misguided vocal wise…and other acts which were pretty bad…then I had to endure Alexander (who now fancies himself as a singer…which he aint) launching into some swing song slipping out of pitch on occasions…awful…BUT finished with a bigshouty note and got a standing ovation…so what do I know? .At the other end of the spectrum I finally finished watching “The Tudors” which I have on a box set….there are four series covering the reign of Henry V111 and was the best thing I have ever seen. It was brilliant and wonderfully acted and produced….I am now an authority on Henry….up until then I always thought that Henry the eighth was the bloke who invented fractions (gerrit?) What makes this series so good is it is TRUE….you couldn’t make it up…what a bloke he was….not one to upset. … on the history front this will interest you if you didn’t know….I was taking a stroll around Woodside in Birkenhead (which is where I took the photograph I sent you of the newly painted ferry boat)…the area has been totally renovated over the last few years and gives a wonderful different angle on The Mersey….I came across a plaque concerning the HMS Birkenhead which was built locally and was the first ship to come to a disastrous end….it hit rocks and the hull was split open…as there weren’t enough lifeboats the women and children were taken off first…this became known as “The Birkenhead Drill” and was used on the Titanic disaster years later…”women and children first”. I watched a programme about The Prince’s Trust where Ant and Dec interviewed Prince Charles and accompanied him on some of his charity missions.I thought The Prince came over very well and his organisation certainly does a lot of good. I must say I smiled at his visit to a prison where he spoke to three inmates….handpicked or what? No matter what you think of Chaz and his “privileged” life I must say I couldn’t think of anything worse….to be constantly hounded by people who either grovel or despise you must be awful…and there is no escape…fame always comes with a price…had John Lennon not been a Beatle he would have lived twice as long….fame – no thanks.

The song I’ve sent you this week was another I wrote for David Alexander…which he recorded and put on his wedding album….it is called “Let’s Keep It Simple”.It was also recorded by Julie Bright and Sue Young back in the vinyl days…..it did well…in fact I might resurrect it. The election is now taking over the evening TV with all the parties (with some exceptions) slugging it out on the podium….what a load of boring tripe!....I thought UKIP were doing well and thought I might even vote for them….then they announced they were going to allow smoking in pubs…big error…whoever came up with that idea has blown their chances… The “scientists” are at it again…proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can actually get paid for nothing…….an American university (where else?) has studied peoples eating habits and have come up with the devastating conclusion that what you watch on TV determines how much junk food you eat….so if you are watching an exiting action film (if there is such a thing) you eat less than if you are watching a slow boring programme…so there you are…earth shattering stuff…..and this was NATIONAL news. I am in the habit of watching the news at 8 in the morning….and I generally watch the headlines on the BBC before it goes off on a boring tangent…which is after about 3 minutes…I then skip over to ITV which is a bit lighter and saves me falling back to sleep….HOWEVER the ITV morning show has had a guest presenter this week…Piers Morgan….heavens above WHY?...he is the most arrogant, ignorant, self opinionated talentless excuse for a TV personality in the history of broadcasting….I felt sorry for the normal presenters.........I’ve never quite fathomed out why they need more than one presenter anyway….but to bring in a complete moron like Piers is beyond belief… We are being bombarded with some terrible stuff on TV at the moment….there is a show with Philip Schofield who I quite like whereby members of the public get hypnotised and make idiots out of themselves….sending entertainment down to a new low….Then we have “Britains Got Talent”…..HELP!!!!!....nothing changes…it’s still all about the judges playing God and charismaless hopefuls being watched by their dying granny….the fact it is so popular says a lot about our population….IT’S RUBBISH !!....bring back Opp Knox or New Faces and leave the doting family members out of it….and don’t get me going on Ant and Dec !!!!!....it must be at least five minutes since they were last on the tele.

The song I’ve sent you this week is called “When You’re The Other Woman”” which was written for and is performed by Pauline Daniels….I This was on the B side of the first record I made when I formed my company (you have already played the A side “You’re No Good To Me If You Can’t Boogie”)…whereas the A side was aimed at radio play this one was specifically for her act.She started out as a singer and sang stuff like “Send In The Clowns”…and “Pearl’s a Singer”…so this one fitted into her act…it is what it is like to actually BE the other woman…the one who gets the blame…..I had to craft it to her voice so she could get the big note at the end….I achieved this by having a key change in the middle which went DOWN a tone…the only one to do it I think….then there’s another key change which actually brings it back to the original key…clever eh? My publisher in the seventies was called Mingard Music and it is where I befriended Angie McCartney (Paul’s stepmum) and her daughter Ruth…when they went to the States they suggested I go it alone which I did…I built an 8 track studio in my attic and paid for it by doing demos for people…I advertised in a national mag and ended up doing 200 demos….some of them were horrendous with customers simply singing the song in the bath etc..and I had to put it into shape….I was always helpful…one guy sent me a song to do called “My Old Man’s A Policeman” to the tune of My Old Man’s A Dustman….I told him I would alter a few chord progressions so he didn’t get sues and suggested he call it “Top Of The Cops”…which he did…it was still horrendous. Sue Young uses to do the female vocals…great days. The news here is a constant barrage of election rubbish…which just results in me being more confused than I was beforehand…..and when you switch channels all you get is every illness being discussed in length…that’s all we get all the time. If I could I would like to suggest a channel with things of interest on it….good well written dramas….good documentaries…and FUNNY comedy….then Ant and Dec,Sarah Millican,John Bishop,Ross Poldark, and all the cooking programmes and all the cures for obesity can be avoided…..with 15 minutes of news. .....having said this I have been watching “Hi-De-Hi” which is on every day at tea time….I never used to be fussy…but it is so funny and so well written….it is a continuous story which is great fun to keep up with…it is written by the guys who wrote Dad’s Army…it really is brilliant…and what a breath of fresh air. ...The blokes who were allegedly plane spotting at some foreign airport are STILL in jail and their case come up next Monday….I bet they are panicking now…also we had the robbery of a big jewellery store…and they reckon the thieves got away with 200 million pounds worth of stuff…and no-one knew they were there for days….I think a few heads will roll on this one….also the French air traffic control strikes are causing havoc to our holiday makers…this sort of thing should be outlawed…it’s disgraceful. ...finally we are experiencing air pollution from France and The Sahara….don’t the know we are British….KEEP YOUR NASTY AIR WE DON@T WANT IT !!!!!
