If sleep is the panacea of all ills, WAKE has found the very experts who can tell you exactly why that's the case! On this week's special bonus episode, Toby and TJ welcome internationally renowned neuroscientists, Professors Adrian Peyrache and Arjun Krishnaswamy, to talk about what's going on inside our brains while we sleep. In an episode that's part TED Talk and part HCE Talk, we break down insights into the sleeping brain, including how memory relies on good sleep hygiene, sleep paralysis, brain compasses, real-time dreaming, and how mice dream of mazes. We hear Adrien's critique of the science of ‘Inception,' position the Wake as the first-ever Large Language Model, and finally gain definitive proof of who the dreamer is. Oh, and with a whole section on erotic dream-infused cave paintings, this is a discussion that will definitely not put you to sleep. Once a semi-professional footballer, John Bishop brings the mindset of an elite athlete to his stand-up comedy. He's still more nervous playing football in front of a crowd than performing as a comedian in packed arenas and once set off on a cycle ride from Liverpool to Sydney in Australia without a bike. John Bishop's culinary journey is a testament to how life can unfold in unexpected and magnificent ways. From a young Welsh boy with no grand ambitions beyond escaping his small town, to becoming one of Canada's most influential culinary pioneers, Bishop's story captivates from the first moment. The heart of Bishop's philosophy crystallized in his first days at cooking school: mise en place – proper preparation and organization. This concept would guide not just his cooking but his entire approach to life and community. After honing his craft across the UK, Ireland, and working on merchant ships, Bishop arrived in Vancouver in February 1973, eventually landing at Umberto Menghi's acclaimed Il Giardino. What truly set John apart was his revolutionary vision when opening his eponymous restaurant in 1985. Long before "farm-to-table" became an industry buzzword, Bishop built direct relationships with local farmers like Natty and Gary King of Hazelmere Organic Farm, planning seasonal menus based on what would be harvested from their soil. This approach – focusing on locality and seasonality rather than ethnicity or culinary technique – transformed Vancouver's dining landscape.Bishop's Restaurant became more than just a place to eat; it was a cultural institution where art, community, and hospitality merged. For 37 years, it hosted everyone from Hollywood celebrities to regular Vancouverites celebrating life's milestones. John also became an ambassador for Canadian cuisine, representing its bounty internationally from Beijing to London, all while feeding culinary icons like Julia Child and Jaques Pepin back home. Most profound in John's reflection is his understanding of cooking as an act of giving. Whether preparing a meal for family, creating a special anniversary dinner for longtime guests, or mentoring chefs who would become the next generation of culinary leaders, Bishop recognized that the table itself – the gathering place where people connect – holds transformative power.Though Bishop's Restaurant closed at the end of 2021, his legacy endures through the countless chefs he mentored, the culinary philosophy he pioneered, and his ongoing work connecting people through food with charity-focused culinary tours. His advice to young people entering the profession resonates far beyond cooking: find something you truly love, and it will never feel like work.Send us your feedback

Brian Cox and Robin Ince consider how different our understanding of the universe would be without the stars. They are joined by Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Roberto Trotta and comedian John Bishop who illuminate all that we have learnt from the stars and how different life would be without them.Every culture has looked up at the night sky, but why are we so drawn to the pin pricks of light in the sky above us all and how have they helped shape human civilisation? Roberto Trotta takes us back to the origins of astronomy, to women who he believes were the first astronomers, linking the orbital period of the moon with the length of the menstrual cycle. We continue the historical journey, through the astronomical greats, Galileo, Copernicus and Kepler who all in part owe their scientific discoveries to the stars. Our panel marvel at how we, an infinitesimally small part of the universe, are able to look up at the stars and comprehend what is beyond and how this star-gazing has profoundly shaped our sense of selves as well as underpinned science as we know it.Producer: Melanie Brown Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem Researcher: Olivia JaniBBC Studios Audio production

The comedian and actor John Bishop is about to head off on a tour celebrating 25 years in stand up - a quarter century since he took to the stage on a whim and ended up one of the UK's favourite stars. The explorer Lucy Shepherd is more likely to be found fighting off venomous spiders than hecklers. For her latest TV series she's embarked on a never before completed journey across Guyana. How did she cope with the threat of trench foot, zero daylight and the ominous warnings from the locals - "don't go, you might not get back"? The Comic and podcaster Grace Campbell is also one for exploration but hers involve the world of dating and parties in her tour - On Heat. She'll be competing on tall tales and ominous warnings, no doubt. And broadcaster and columnist Adrian Chiles will cast a cool eye on proceedings as he does in his much-shared newspaper articles on chewy topics such as home urinals, favourite spoons and the biggie - we can go to the moon, so why can't we stop my glasses sliding down my nose? With music by "the songwriter's songwriter" Ron Sexsmith and "Hendrix of the kora" Seckou Keita. Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced by Olive Clancy
