For our final episode of 2023, Alexa is joined by sought-after choral director and vocal coach, Mark De-Lisser. He has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Beverly Knight. He has also been involved in TV shows such as "Our Dementia Choir" with Vicky McClure and "The Masked Singer." Mark made the arrangement of "Stand By Me," which was performed by the Kingdom Choir at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. This performance has been streamed over 4 million times. Mark is here to discuss how to sing and teach the gospel vocal style. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gospel music is a Christian genre rooted in the black experience. Known for emotive vocals, call-and-response, and Christian themes, it often features choirs and instruments. Gospel expresses spirituality, joy, or sorrow, with improvisation common. Evolving into sub-genres like traditional and contemporary gospel, it has influenced various music styles, playing a significant role in religious worship and shaping American musical development. When it comes to the question of the cultural appropriation of gospel music, Mark believes that you have to give acknowledgment to where that music came from. You have to think about the composer and the spiritual background of where the music came from and reference it when you come to teach it.  The most important thing you need to remember when singing gospel music is that you need to believe in the words that are coming out of your mouth. Even if you're not a religious person, you should think of a thing or idea that lifts you up and gives you strength.  When singing gospel, allow yourself to be more vulnerable and get wrapped up in the emotion of the piece. Having a licence to be more vulnerable will make it more likely you affect the audience and make them leave with your story.  BEST MOMENTS  ‘Gospel is songs of good news'  ‘It blew my mind because I'd only heard traditional gospel music' ‘They were creating these songs out of a need for freedom'  ‘If you connect you will affect'  ‘We were born singers and society does its best to beat it out of us'  EPISODE RESOURCES  Guest Website: https://markdelisser.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @markdelisser & @mdlsingers Relevant Links & Mentions:  Artists Mentioned: Thomas Dorsey; Kirk Franklin; Maverick City; Mahalia Jackson; Andre Crouch; Walter Hawkins; Richard Smallwood; Donald Lawrence; Johnathan McReynolds; Daryl Coley; Take Six; The Winans; Mischa Paris; Tai Trabet; Anita Wilson; Mary Mary; Tom Odell; CeCe Winans; The Darkness  (Book) So you Want to Sing Gospel: A Guide for Performers by Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dane Chalfin Felton and Norton Community Gospel Choir  BAST Book A Call: basttraining.com/bookacall/ ABOUT THE GUEST  Mark De-Lisser is one of the most sought after choral directors and vocal coaches in the UK. He has worked with some of today's top vocal talent, including Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Beverley Knight, and on some of the UK's most watched TV shows, including BBC's BAFTA nominated Our Dementia Choir with Vicky McClure, Songs of Praise and ITV's award winning The Masked Singer. Driven to inspire and motivate everybody to succeed, Mark helps to increase confidence and self-awareness, whilst improving technique and delivery. Anybody who is fortunate to work with Mark is left feeling uplifted and invigorated. Mark is perhaps best known for his arrangement of Stand by Me, performed by the Kingdom Choir at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, which has now been streamed more than 4 million times on Spotify and has over 10 million views on YouTube. Living in a Box, with Marcus Vere on keyboards and synthesizers, Anthony Tich Critchlow on drums, and Richard Darbyshire on vocals, formed in 1985. and released their first single, also titled Living in a Box in 1987. That track reached the top 5 in the Uk and the top 40 on the Billboard charts. During my early days at MTV, their songs were played on heavy rotation. They released two successful albums and a string of hits singles. But in 1990, when Darbyshire left, the band split in accordance with the contract they had signed in 1985. In 2004, they reformed for one gig with the original lineup. But this was not to be. And over a decade later, Tich and Marcus returned to the stage with a new vocalist, Kenny Thomas. This year they are out on the road again, not with Kenny as he had other commitments but with Bryan J. Chambers, who has sung for Pink Floyd, Beverly Knight, and who has been a backing singer for Prince, Marc Almond, and Grace Jones. The story of the band, and particularly Marcus Vere's story, is intriguing, He might call it luck, right place right time, but in the end, it's also the story of a combination of great songwriting and the right talent. Rocco Buonvino, artist, concert impresario and event organiser talks to Passions. With over 20 years in the music industry, artist and concert impresario, Rocco Buonvino has been at the forefront of staging some of the biggest entertainment events, from sold-out concerts to musical theatre productions and bespoke events with world superstars. Over two years until his untimely death in May 2012, Rocco looked after some of Robin Gibb's activities including the completion of his first classical work "The Requiem for Titanic 2012 Concert", with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Westminster Central Hall. Early in 2010 Rocco staged his own very first classical production, The Beatles Philharmonic Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, a spectacular orchestral concert of pure classical interpretations to celebrate the music of the World's Greatest Legendary Band, The Beatles. Special star performers included Dame Shirley Bassey, Beverly Knight, Tony Christie, Susan Black to name a few. Again, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alan Chircop and orchestral arrangements by Wayne Grima. Other musical credits include The Soldiers Charity Concert at the London Palladium, promoting and staging of shows for world-renowned artists such as Sir Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, The Chemical Brothers, Duran Duran. Each year Rocco co-stages the Malta Music Awards where he brought and orchestrated Peter Andre and his ITV team in 2013, Peter receiving several awards. Rocco did the same with Robin Gibb and Billy Ocean to name but a few. Rocco produced and directed his first live TV show, called Let's Talk Music, a highly successful award winning weekly music debate show on ONE TV in Malta. In June 2013 Rocco brought Hollywood icon Al Pacino with his acclaimed event, An Evening with Pacino to the UK for the very first time, for one unmissable night at the London Palladium. A unique event, a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal and share private moments with one of the greatest actors of his generation. The evening included an on-stage interview projected on large screen as well as giving audience members a rare chance to speak to Pacino in an audience Q&A session. More recently Rocco has been active in the world of TV producing a range of programmes broadcasting on the Sky TV platform.

It has been up and down journey for Jo Swinson and the Lib Dems who are pushing hard for the party to win its first election. In the Evening Standard Michael Heseltine is giving his backing to two Lib-Dem candidates in the upcoming election and he doesn't care if he gets thrown out of the Tories because of it. Last weekend Alistair Campbell was campaigning for the Lib-Dems too, as part his own “tactical voting strategy”. Despite the hype around the Liberal Democrats they still don't look to be gaining actual votes. The Evening Standard's Associate Editor Julian Glover joins The Leader podcast to explain why he believes there's a way for the party to save its election. Benedict Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett gave readings last night to 500 Londoners who attended the eighth annual Fayre of St James's charity concert. The special carol singing event raised £230,000 for food waste charity The Felix Project. The event even had performances from Craig David and Beverly Knight. The Evening Standard's Magda Ibrahim tells the Leader podcast all the gossip from backstage.***TRANSCRIPTPRESENTER: Thanks for listening to the Leader – you can subscribe and rate through your podcast provider, and get the best news, analysis, interviews and commentary every day at 4pm.Now, From the Evening Standard in London, this is The Leader. PRESENTER: Hi, I'm David Marsland – The Liberal Democrats strode into this election with a bold claim that Jo Swinson was going to move into Number 10 next month.JO SWINSON: When I look at Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn, I am certain I could do a better job than either of them.PRESENTER: Now they're slipping in the polls, Deputy Leader Sir Ed Davey's admitting the removal vans aren't being hired… so is it all over for them? Not necessarily:JULIAN GLOVER: They're the sort of forgotten one in the corner and suddenly everyone swung around and said hello, we love you Lib Dems. We're back. We're back rescue us, and the poor old Lib Dems are sagging a bit under the weight of expectations.PRESENTER: Our Associate Editor Julian Glover argues there's a way for the party to save its election.And..MAGDA IBRAHIM: He didn't kind of give us too much for clue about what the book is called or when it's going to be out. He just said to us yep you're the first people to actually hear it, which was quite exciting.PRESENTER:The Standard's Magda Ibrahim takes us backstage at the Fayre of St James's where Benedict Cumberbatch revealed a mysterious new book he's writing. Just one week later another action packed show full of Theatrical goodness! Cliff has an effusive review already trailed for Green Room's "42nd Street". Richard tells of his love for "I Do I Do" upstairs at The Gatehouse which you can still catch this week, and "The Addams Family" and that's only to start. We discuss dodgy ceilings, new casting news and a lot of new shows that are around and about. A Charity Gala Performance at the Coliseum might take your fancy and we hear about a new Musical for next Autumn starring Beverly Knight. Richard previews the UK Theatrical premiere of Cinderella from Rodgers and Hammerstein and the new Morcombe and Wise show "Eric and Ern" which features Ruthie Henshall. We finish up with a heartwarming story amidst natural disasters and have a slightly more serious discussion about surge pricing and whether clapping should be banned!

UK Soul has become a little less distinctive due to music in general becoming more of a melting pot since the explostion of the availability of music online and also the ease of international collaboration brought about by the internet. Nevertheless there still remains a distinct UK flavour on many of these tunes. Artists on this include Omar, Reel People, Blacktonez, Mahalia and more. The song I’ve sent you this week was from my more “commercial” era (lol)…..it’s sung by a friend of mine called Sue Young who had a great voice … she did the clubs as well but had a superb session voice…I used to call her “One Take” Sue…..I used to have a demo service where people would send me their songs in rough form (sometimes just a voice) and I would knock them into shape for them to send to publishers…and Sue would sing the female parts…she would have a couple of listens then hit it in one go…she was wonderful to work with. This was a song I wrote for her….we got radio play which gave her some publicity and some extra gigs. I used to use a few session girls singers…one being Pauline Daniels and another Julie Bright…these were the days before the modern trend of females shouting and yelling out songs and destroying them. I watched a programme called “Brucie’s Hall of Fame”….which was supposed to be presented by Bruce Forsyth…but as he’s not well his place was taken by Alexander Armstrong (who we talked about the other week)….he had artists on who were paying tribute to the stars they were inspired by….a good idea but sadly it didn’t come off at all…..Beverly Knight paid tribute to Sam Cooke with a yelling session…I like her very much but I think she is a bit misguided vocal wise…and other acts which were pretty bad…then I had to endure Alexander (who now fancies himself as a singer…which he aint) launching into some swing song slipping out of pitch on occasions…awful…BUT finished with a bigshouty note and got a standing ovation…so what do I know? .At the other end of the spectrum I finally finished watching “The Tudors” which I have on a box set….there are four series covering the reign of Henry V111 and was the best thing I have ever seen. It was brilliant and wonderfully acted and produced….I am now an authority on Henry….up until then I always thought that Henry the eighth was the bloke who invented fractions (gerrit?) What makes this series so good is it is TRUE….you couldn’t make it up…what a bloke he was….not one to upset. … on the history front this will interest you if you didn’t know….I was taking a stroll around Woodside in Birkenhead (which is where I took the photograph I sent you of the newly painted ferry boat)…the area has been totally renovated over the last few years and gives a wonderful different angle on The Mersey….I came across a plaque concerning the HMS Birkenhead which was built locally and was the first ship to come to a disastrous end….it hit rocks and the hull was split open…as there weren’t enough lifeboats the women and children were taken off first…this became known as “The Birkenhead Drill” and was used on the Titanic disaster years later…”women and children first”. I watched a programme about The Prince’s Trust where Ant and Dec interviewed Prince Charles and accompanied him on some of his charity missions.I thought The Prince came over very well and his organisation certainly does a lot of good. I must say I smiled at his visit to a prison where he spoke to three inmates….handpicked or what? No matter what you think of Chaz and his “privileged” life I must say I couldn’t think of anything worse….to be constantly hounded by people who either grovel or despise you must be awful…and there is no escape…fame always comes with a price…had John Lennon not been a Beatle he would have lived twice as long….fame – no thanks.
