Can Christian themes hold their own against blockbuster franchises like "Fast and the Furious" and "Iron Man"? Join us as Todd Freeman, a seasoned filmmaker turned ministry director, shares his insights on the power of "suspension of disbelief" and how it allows audiences to embrace even the most fantastical elements in storytelling. We explore why Christian filmmakers have been slow to harness this tool and discuss how authentic stories like "A Most Reluctant Convert," the film about C.S. Lewis, can bridge the gap between faith and film. What if Christian movies went beyond the wholesome Hallmark feel? In our conversation, we challenge the stereotype and push for a new era of faith-based storytelling characterized by realism and relatability. By examining films like "The Apostle" with Robert Duvall, we illustrate how flawed, complex characters can resonate with broader audiences while subtly conveying profound Christian themes. It's about crafting narratives that speak to the human experience, transcending the boundaries of traditional Christian media. Can a Christian horror film be both authentic and spiritually enriching? Todd Freeman thinks so, and he draws from his unique upbringing under a Baptist minister father who introduced him to both horror movies and the gospel. We tackle the potential criticisms and discuss the significance of films like "The Passion of the Christ," which set a precedent for raw, unfiltered biblical storytelling. The aim is to create impactful films that stand on their own as great art while opening doors for deeper conversations about faith, much like Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.Ask Ralph - Christian FinanceJoin financial expert Ralph Estep, Jr - Daily tips for balancing your faith and finances. Arguably, C.S. Lewis is one of the most quoted people from the 20th century. He died 60 years ago, and yet so many of his thoughts are timeless. His books, essays, and even the children's stories seem prescient, even for our world today. Lewis was a brilliant intellectual whose apologetic approaches to the truth claims of Christ and the Gospel have helped bring countless people to faith.  So that's why its surprising to learn that CS Lewis, by his own admission, fought tooth and nail against becoming a Christian. His commitment to academic and intellectual integrity forced him to continue to reexamine the truth claims of the Bible and, inch by inch he drew closer until finally … he was a Christian. So much so that he once described himself as the most reluctant convert.  On this episode of Great Stories, we'll be joined by award winning actor, Max McClean, who plays CS Lewis in the film called The Most Reluctant Convert. Max will share about the incredible movie he made about Lewis and his conversion from atheism to a follower of Christ. It's a powerful story that you need to hear because it reminds us that no one is too far from Jesus.

Further Up and Further In: More Wisdom from C.S. Lewis

Several years ago, Max McLean and the Fellowship for Performing Arts staged The Most Reluctant Convert, a play about the life of C.S. Lewis up to his conversion. During the Covid shutdowns, that production was made into a film that received strong reviews. Now, McLean and FPA are offering a follow-up stage production dealing with Lewis's life post-conversion.   Although Further Up and Further In includes some biographical information, such as the writing of The Problem of Pain and the recording of the BBC talks that were later published in Mere Christianity, this new production takes the much more challenging route of exploring the different aspects of Lewis's ministry. Not surprisingly, much of the production is focused on his apologetics.  In his day, the great challenge to Christianity was materialism, the idea that everything is just matter and energy. Lewis responded to this by tracing out the implications of that view and showing its utter implausibility. He notes that scientists “observe the behavior of things within the universe. They cannot make statements about things beyond the universe.” Any time a scientist does that, for example by proclaiming that matter and energy are all that exist, he is no longer doing science.  Even more, Lewis says, if materialism is true, there is no reason to trust the scientist doing science. After all, he rightly observed,   If the materialist view is true, our minds must in reality be merely chance arrangements of atoms in skulls. We never think a thought because it is true, only because blind Nature forces us to think it. We never do an act because it is right, only because blind Nature forces us to do it.   This argument, which can also be found in slightly different form in the work of Christian philosopher Alvin Plantinga, is a powerful response to atheism. If atheism is true, any foundation for trusting science or human reason is undermined.  Rather than defend a particular denomination of Christianity, Lewis believed that “the only service [he] could do for [his] unbelieving neighbors was to explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians and at all times.” This led him to write The Problem of Pain and from there to do his broadcast talks for the BBC. As a result, he began receiving massive numbers of letters. Though he dismissed some, he felt obligated to respond to any serious inquiries received. Some evenings after work, Lewis wrote up to 35 letters.   Much of Further Up and Further In is adapted from volume two of Lewis' collected letters, a 1,152-page tome. Through an adaptation of some of these letters, we see his work as an evangelist. For example, in the play, a young atheist contacts Lewis with questions, and Lewis responds. After a series of exchanges, the young atheist decides to take the step of committing himself to Christ. Lewis responds with advice on how to grow in faith and hang on to it through doubts. In the end, Lewis argues, “It all hinges on Jesus. If His statements are false, Christianity is of no importance. If true, it is of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.”   As a literary scholar, Lewis anticipated the argument that the Gospels cannot be trusted, pointing out that the Gospels include statements that would hardly be expected if they were made up by people trying to prove the divinity of Jesus. Rather, the difficulties that they pose are solid evidence for the truthfulness of the Gospels' accounts of Jesus's teaching.  Toward the end of Further Up and Further In, the character of Lewis turns his focus to Christians, offering advice on temptation (something he had discussed in The Screwtape Letters), the crucial importance of prayer, the Second Coming and the end of the world, and heaven. Much of this advice remains as helpful today as when he first offered it.  Once again, Max McLean and the Fellowship for Performing Arts shows why Lewis's popularity and value have endured. Further Up and Further In is currently on tour. How Lewis engaged the materialists of his time is a model for engaging people today who, though coming from a different worldview, seem just as unable to acknowledge the reality that God has made known in His world.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Glenn Sunshine. It's Friday, May 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims killed 42 Christians in 11 villages Nigerian Muslim gunmen, wielding AK-47s and machetes, killed 42 Christians and burned dozens of houses near Mangu in Nigeria's Plateau State, reports International Christian Concern. The attackers – suspected to be Fulani Muslim militants – raided at least 11 villages from midnight to dawn early Tuesday, May 16th in Nigeria's north-central region about 55 miles from the capital, Jos. Plateau State Governor-elect Caleb Mutfwang condemned the Fulani militants and called on the federal government to do more to help secure the state.  He described the attacks as “ethnic cleansing.” Radical Islamic Fulani militias have targeted the mostly Christian farming communities. More than 50,000 Christians have been killed and millions displaced over the past 20 years. Revelation 6:9-10 says, “When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until You judge the inhabitants of the Earth and avenge our blood?'” Canadian teen arrested for handing out Bibles on public sidewalk On May 17th, Canadian law enforcement officers in Alberta, Canada arrested 16-year-old Josh Alexander for handing out Bibles on a public sidewalk after an altercation broke out between him, his supporters, and a group of pro-transgender hecklers, reports Faithwire.com. In a tweet that has been read by 3.4 million people, he wrote that he “was handcuffed and put in a paddy wagon for offering students Bibles on a public sidewalk in Calgary.  I was released and told if I returned I would be arrested and charged. I continued handing out Bibles. For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.” What a powerful reference to Paul's declaration in Romans 1:16. He said, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” In a follow-up tweet, Alexander wrote, “I will not yield to the pressure of the woke mob or corrupt state. We will continue to spread the truth in love.” Maxime Bernier, leader of the People's Party of Canada, condemned law enforcement officers for their apparent double standard. He tweeted, “If you burn a church in this country, the police won't devote any resources to catching you. If you hand out Bibles on the sidewalk, however — or hold a rally to defend fundamental rights in a time of hysteria — you will be arrested and fined immediately. We're a sick society.” Durham Report: FBI, DOJ failed to practice ‘Strict Fidelity to the Law' in Trump-Russia Investigation In his newly-released report, Special Counsel John Durham concludes that the FBI merely failed to practice “strict fidelity to the law” in its launch and handling of the Crossfire Hurricane surveillance and investigation seeking to prove former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia, reports Media Research Center TV. Rather than state outright that FBI and Justice Department operatives broke the law, Durham resorted to a euphemism implying that they simply weren't faithful to the law. DeSantis bans puberty blockers and transgender surgeries for minors On Wednesday, Florida Republican governor and likely presidential candidate Ron DeSantis officially banned mutilating transgender surgeries and drugs for minors as part of a broad legislative package to protect the state's kids from transgender ideology, reports LifeSiteNews.com. DeSANTIS: “You have a movement amongst, I would say, rogue elements of the medical establishment to do things that is basically the mutilation of minors. I mean, they're trying to do sex change operations on minors, giving them things like puberty blockers and doing things that are irreversible to them.” Planned Parenthood immediately started canceling their transgender appointments after the bill was signed as the organization assesses the law's implications. In addition, DeSantis signed bills which: protect students from having to declare their pronouns in school. prohibit classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in Pre-K through 8th protect children from sexually explicit performances, including Drag Queen shows, in all venues. ensure that Florida's bathrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms are safe places for women. DeSantis said, “Florida is proud to lead the way in standing up for our children.  As the world goes mad, Florida represents a refuge of sanity and a citadel of normalcy.” C.S. Lewis' transformation from atheist to Christian captured on film And finally, have you ever heard someone say, “You were born to do this?” It's a proclamation that perfectly applies to award-winning actor Max McLean, reports The Christian Post. McLean was, without a doubt, born to portray C.S. Lewis. Possessing the look, the voice, and even the mannerisms of the legendary literary icon, McLean is brilliant in the Christian film, “The Most Reluctant Convert,” that was recently released on the Pure Flix Streaming platform. McLean looks back on the Mere Christianity author's remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Christian writer of the 20th Century. An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Chrsitian writer of the past century. The Most Reluctant Convert features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Materpiece's All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years- old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief. Norman Stone Norman Stone began his professional career in television as the youngest producer/director to be working at the BBC, and soon established himself as a top film maker with his highly acclaimed film A Different Drummer about the blind and deaf Christian poet, Jack Clemo. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q

Max Mclean may well be the foremost authority on one of the greatest authors and intellectuals of the past century, C.S. Lewis.  After all, Mclean has spent a big part of his life capturing the essence of  Lewis through stage presentations and now in film.  Max Mclean is the founder and executive director of the Fellowship for the Performing Arts in New York who specialize in artistic performances through a Christian world view. Mclean is the star of the movie, " The Most reluctant convert.  The Untold Story of C. S. Lewis", now available for the first time through stream or DVD.   Whether you are a fan of C.S. Lewis's many works (Chronicles of Narnia and dozens more) or not, this powerful biopic will  reveal the life and genius of one of the worlds great thinkers.  You'll be captivated by his conversion from atheist to theist and ultimately  to one of Christianity's  most vocal apologist.   The theatrical debut of the movie was met with such a large audience that it remained in theaters well beyond its original run. Now, "The Most Reluctant Convert" is available on line at https://cslewismovie.com/.    This movie is likely to become the defining masterpiece that memorializes the amazing life of C.S. Lewis.  In addition to his incredible solo performances on stage and now in film, Max Mclean also makes the word of God come to life as the voice of the "Listener's Bible" (NIV).PS   If you are new to C.S. Lewis I encourage you to read his book' "Mere Christianity".  It is not a light read and you may need to spend some time with it,  but it is truly a work of art.

The British author, Clive Staples Lewis, aka C.S. Lewis had a keen, brilliant mind, whose conversion from staunch atheist to strong Christian is the narrative of a new film, The Most Reluctant Convert. The author of such books as "Mere Christianity" and "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", which are heavily drenched in the Christian worldview... Lewis rejected Christianity early in his life after the death of his mother from cancer when he was just nine years of age. His experience of a cruel and meaningless world, brought him to the conclusion that "either there was no God behind the universe, a God indifferent to good and evil... or worse... an evil God." On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, actor Max McLean, who wrote and stars the film, which was adapted from the stage play, talks about the filming of the movie at Oxford, England, the reason behind Lewis's intellectual pathway to accepting the reality of an Omnipotent God and, the conversations that Lewis had with his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, who would later write, Lord of the Rings, that made his conversion complete. McLean is the founder and Artistic Director of the New York-based Fellowship of the Performing Arts.

Does my conscience move me towards this? Is my reluctance to move to this door due to my pride, or my mere taste, or my personal dislike for this particular door-keeper?”  ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity In my lifetime I have observed faith in God moving from a rather passive assumption in the culture around me, to a rather passive irrelevance. “Which church do you go to?” is a question with far more assumptions than a modern American would now make. Atheists have claimed the high ground in academia, somehow assuming they have won the day, disinterested in revisiting arguments from antiquity which allowed theism to dominate in world history. In my world I come across a lot of atheists and less courageous agnostics. When allowed the chance I often express to them my envy of their assurance. I tell them I might be willing to join them, but I just can't get there intellectually. This usually causes them pause. That's their line. “Did he just say he can't get to atheism intellectually?” What they don't know is that I don't believe they came to a belief in the absence of God intellectually either. It doesn't take a genius to look at a sunset and have a pretty strong intuition that this didn't come from nothing, or chance which is another word for nothing.
