The Sermons on the Amount - Part 2  "Owner - A Question: Who is Lord Over All?" MESSAGE SUMMARY: This Sermon series assembles important Biblical references to all aspects of money and finances and their influence and impact on us; therefore,  helping us to apply these Scriptures to our lives today. The reason for this series is because money and possessions have captivated our culture. In Colossians 1:16, Paul establishes Jesus' Divinity and primacy: “For him {Jesus} all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.". Jesus is the Creator and owner of all things both Earthly and Universally. Also, the Psalmist, in Psalms 24:1-2, establishes the supremacy of God's “ownership” of all things: “The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.". God's aspects of “ownership” include our: 1) time – we can't change time or add time to a twenty-four-hour day or our earthly lives; 2) land – we are but passing through with only temporary stewardship for the land we occupy before our death; 3) animals – God created and owns all animal life; 4) gold, money and finances – as God tells us in Haggai 2:8: “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.”; and 5) all that we possess (tangible and intangible) – health, mind, family heritage, creativity, bodies.   When we realize that Jesus owns everything, even though we have worked hard to obtain and enjoy the benefits of land, money, time and the other tangible and intangible components of our lives then and only then do we obtain a freedom to truly live our lives to the fullest. Everything that we “have” and “enjoy” is because of and from the ownership of God, as we are told in 1 Chronicles 29:14-15: “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.”. Jesus is either the Lord over all, or He is not the Lord at all! In the New Testament, the word “Lord” means the one that rules over us for our own good. In these times today, we must be intentional to have Jesus as the “Lord” over our lives, money and possessions. Intellectually, we must come to a place where we recognize and accept that Jesus is the owner. Most people in Western Christianity never come to this realization and acceptance of Jesus' ownership and “Lord” over all. The Lord wants to bless us and reward us while we recognize His ownership and use, to His name, of all that He has permitted us to use and possess in our lifetime. It helps to openly acknowledge God's ownership of all that we possess – acknowledge to God that we are in partnership with Him for all that He has permitted us to possess while we are on this earth. In his writings, Andrew Murray recommends guidelines that we: 1) receive all our money with thanksgiving and as coming from God; 2) lay everything down before God as belonging to Him; 3) let our dealings with money be a part of our spiritual life; and 4) make the study of the Word of God, relating to finances and money, become a key part of our lives.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen.    Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 6:19-24; Colossians 1:15-20; Psalms 24:1-2; 2 Peter 3:8; Matthew 6:27; Leviticus 25:23; Daniel 4:17-30; Deuteronomy 8:18: Psalms 50:10; Matthew 6:26; Haggai 2:8; Job 1:20-21;   1 Corinthians 6:19; 1 Chronicles 29:14-15. Andrew Murray, the quiet Cavan boxer, walked a Rocky Road unlike any other. As a child, he battled Perthes disease, and, despite doctors warning he could end up in a wheelchair if he boxed, the young Andrew was transfixed by Eubank and Benn, igniting an unyielding desire to step between the ropes. He defied medical caution, joining Cavan Boxing Club, and rose to become a three-time Irish Elite champion and a two-weight professional Irish champion. Andrew fought alongside a golden generation of Irish pros like Bernard Dunne, Andy Lee, John Duddy and Matthew Macklin. He shared bills with champions and contenders, from Paul McCloskey's world title night against Amir Khan, to fighting on the same card as Tyson Fury, and proudly headlining RTE fight nights. From a challenging loss to Gavin Rees after preparing in remote Ros Muc, to his final victory on a raucous Henry Coyle night in Mayo, Andrew's career was a testament to his quiet determination. What is intercession? Intercession is the act of praying for others. It is standing in the gap for the soul, life, and eternal state of another person. Intercessory prayer is a privilege and responsibility of every Christian. Andrew Murray wrote in the Ministry of Intercession “the power of the church to truly bless rests on intercession: asking and receiving heavenly gifts to carry to men.” In this Faith for My Generation podcast episode, we discuss six aspects of Intercession and how we can engage in this powerful ministry. Mary Lindow ~ The Messenger Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2025 28:52

By Mary Lindow Hello to all of you who are listening via podcast today or who are reading this message! I just finished being a part of our weekly prayer gathering this evening, and I have to tell you, the presence of the Father was so absolutely strong and evident in our time together! I am literally to the point that I anticipate all day long on Thursday evenings, getting together with the group that we pray with.    We have been blessed week after week, month after month with the sweet and strong presence of God as we intercede for our nation, for the globe, and for so many other things that the Lord lays on our hearts to pray about.   I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE PODCAST THAT I HAD TALKED ABOUT EARLIER. I am still trying to get it to compile and come together and I know that if I rush this, I will not share it in the light of how the Lord wants it to be presented properly.   BUT, I HAVE BEEN HAVING ANOTHER MESSAGE AND WORD FROM THE LORD STIRRING DEEP WITHIN MY SPIRIT, AND SO THAT IS WHAT I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU TODAY. Hearing God accurately in the mess and chaos that the world is in right now, is of huge importance!  May the Lord continue to use you all to proclaim and speak truth, no matter what the cost. It is so worth being called a servant of the Lord during hard and challenging times.   TODAY, I'M GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN A PLACE OF SAFETY, A PLACE, OR A “HAVEN” OF BEING SHELTERED BY THE LORD. Especially during very, very difficult and hard times. I'll share how to discern and hear His voice in the chaos of the nonstop noise the dark world bombards us all with. It's ratcheted up to crazy levels, and shouts loudly to attempt to distract us from discerning the times, and hopes to discourage us and knock us off balance with fear, and then rob our peace.   IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THE EARTH IS IN ONE MASSIVE UPHEAVAL, AND NO MATTER WHERE YOU TURN RIGHT NOW, THE CRISES CONTINUE TO MOUNT AND BOIL! And so, people begin to put aside spending time in the word of God, and certainly in his presence, to spend time with the love of the Internet and scrolling through their telephones through social network information and high charged doomsday podcasts and videos. This can absolutely create stress and anxiety, and it also creates a terrible problem with comparing ourselves to other people and where we are at in life.   PRAYER IS NOT A BORING HARD THING WHEN YOU REALIZE  THAT YOU ARE FACE-TO-FACE, OR LITERALLY,  “PRESENCE TO PRESENCE” WITH THE FATHER.   A tremendous man who walked daily in the Presence of God, Andrew Murray, said in a book that he wrote,  “It's one of the terrible marks of the diseased state of the Christian life in these days that there are so many that are content, and remain passive and content, without the distinct occasion of having experienced answered prayer. They pray daily, but know very little of direct, definite answers to prayer as the rule of their daily life.”    Psalm Thirty verse four says, “I sought the Lord and he answered me.”   We must understand that it's the Father's will that WE SEEK HIM OUT to daily have dialogue with his will, and it's his will to have his children to listen to him and then, he listens to his children and agrees to their requests. It's his will that we should come to him day by day, with specific requests, and he will every day, do for us great and wonderful things! What we ask sometimes might be a case where the specific answer is that he refuses our request, but our Father lets us know when and why he can't give us what we request. It's like his Son Jesus, and so we will withdraw our petition or our request.   When did Jesus do that? Jesus said in the Garden of Gethsemane, “If this cup could pass from me, but not my will, but your will be done.”  He said this to the Father.   WHETHER OUR REQUEST IS ACCORDING TO GOD'S WILL OR NOT, GOD WILL BY HIS WORD AND BY HIS SPIRIT, TEACH THOSE OF US WHO ARE TEACHABLE, and he will give us time to withdraw our requests if they're not according to God‘s mind or purposes.   LET'S PRESS IN. LET'S JUST STAND FIRM UNTIL THE ANSWER COMES! PRAYER IS GIVEN TO US TO OBTAIN AN ANSWER! It's in prayer and its answer, that the exchange of love between the Father and we his children takes place.   MY QUESTION IS, “ARE YOUR  PRAYERS BEING ANSWERED?” During the last hours of the age that we're in, there will be two opposing groups or alliances in the world.    The First group are those whose hearts are absolutely overwrought with bitterness, resentment and hatred.   The Second group is those whose love has actually increased, and are experiencing the power of the Kingdom of God, now!   Jesus told us about this in Matthew in chapter 4:10-13. He said, “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.  Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” And then in Matthew 24:14 he added, “This gospel (good news) of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations and then the end shall come.”   SO, THE BIG QUESTION IS... ...“WHAT IS THIS GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM?”  It's the whole truth Jesus came to bring, not only that part that saves us from our sins, but also that part which creates us in his image! It's the full message, the full good news with all its requirements and all of its rewards!  It's is the full price for the full power! It's the most glorious pearl that a person can possess. The presence of God in His glory, revealed, made known within and among us!   IF WE WANT TO GAIN THIS GREAT LOVE, WE WILL CONTINUALLY BE FORCED TO MAKE CHOICES TOWARD MERCY, OR, TOWARD UNFORGIVENESS, and if we don't walk in a forgiving attitude, we will certainly become prey to an embittered spirit, if it's in fact, God‘s plan to allow wickedness and holiness at the same time,  so they grow to full maturity.   We must guard our hearts ahead of time from reacting in bitterness or unforgiveness because the increasing anarchy will certainly give us occasions to lose love, with the attempt to make us hard so we can survive in this cruel world.   WE OFTEN WITHDRAW FROM THE GENUINENESS OF PURE LOVE! We can't choose cautious, selective love, and also walk in the power of God's kingdom, my friends! To defy pain, we sometimes unconsciously shut down our love, because after all, its love that makes us vulnerable.   GOD WANTS US TO BE A PEOPLE WHOSE LOVE IS GROWING HOT, NOT COLD. Jesus didn't say that we had to trust our enemies, but he did say that we had to love them anyhow. You might be asking why!  One reason God allows difficulties is to test us! ( I know! I know! We don't want to hear that! ) He wants to see if our Christianity is just an intellectual pursuit or just thoughts and feelings of the mind, or if following him is truly the highest passion of our hearts. So, he tells us in Matthew 5:44, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Wow!    SOME OF YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH REJECTION AND BETRAYAL MOST LIKELY. The Lord says to you today, “You did not fail, you have continued to love, and although you went through great pain, yet you have forgiven, those who have hurt you.”  My friends you have passed the test.   THERE ARE HOWEVER, SOME OF YOU LISTENING OR READING THAT STILL HAVE CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR LIVES THAT YOU HAVE NOT FORGIVEN, AND WHOM YOU DO NOT LOVE.  Maybe you're right, they don't deserve your forgiveness, but what you don't realize is the consequence of your anger. You see, as long as we refuse to forgive, a part of this is trapped in the past where you will always be reminded of your pain, and until we forgive, we will not be fully released to go on with our life. Even the time of year in which you were hurt will bring depression.   THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY WE CAN HAVE TRUE FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD AND THAT IS IN THE HERE AND NOW, RIGHT NOW, LIVING IN THE PRESENT. But if our mind is in conflict with others, we're neither here nor in the present. When we live in the past, we are cut off from God! What people did to us to hurt us is over! It's done; it doesn't have any real existence or life of its own, except in your mind.   SO THERE WITHIN US, THE DEED CONTINUES TO LIVE AND FESTER AND AS LONG AS IT LIVES, WE'RE STILL BEING HURT BY IT. The person or the people who wounded you may have long since died. They can't be blamed because it's us who keeps our wounds alive. Not only is the quality of our spiritual life affected, but often our physical health pays a price as well!   As long as we keep holding onto the burden of what someone has done to us, every time we think about it or think about that person, the stomach acids start to churn and anxiety increases, and then of course our body is continually put under stress.   If we don't forgive those who have hurt us, we lose a measure of our capacity to love and whether they deserve forgiveness or not, we deserve a better life! God wants to give you a better life but you can't enjoy abundant life and carry unforgiveness, because we're shackled to something that was hurting us. Did you know that our own unforgiveness tortures us?   SO HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF THAT PRISON?  HOW DO YOU FIND THE PROTECTION OF GOD FOR YOUR SOUL?    Well, God calls us to forgive. You have to see the hands of God reaching to you in the midst of your pain. He wants to redeem that conflict using that specific crisis or hardship to develop and perfect character in you. It will be this experience that he will use to make you like Jesus. To become like Jesus is to dwell, to live, in the place of rest and the safety of God. Every time we say, “Father, I choose to love. I choose to forgive. I choose to forget and not hold it against this person”, we are taking on the nature of Jesus. Friends, rejoice that Jesus is taking over your heart. You are entering into the strong, safe haven of God's shelter.   I DO MANY THINGS THAT THE LORD HAS ASSIGNED ME TO DO IN LIFE NOT ONLY AS A MINISTER, BUT ALSO AS A PASTORAL COUNSELOR. I also host and facilitate a group called “The international Prophetic Women's Mentoring Council.” This is a group of women from all walks of life several cultural groups and different backgrounds. We meet through zoom video sessions and individually. The thing that is “the glue that bonds us” is the fact that each of us have been called into ministry, and each of these women flows in a different expression of the prophetic gift. This past week we had a zoom session and our conversation and subject matter was regarding, the power of intercession and what it takes to approach the Face of God, in a right attitude.   One of the things that stood out so strongly in our time of dialogue and accountability to one another was the fact that in order to hear clearly from the Spirit of God, we need to have the inward witness, or the “inside part of us that communicates with God”, clearly in a place of submission and humility before him, and, that we first come into a place where we have asked the Lord to cleanse us. That means cleanse our hearts before we try to come to Him in prayer.   MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD. They seek it through quick daily devotionals, or they seek the voice of God through other people every day, instead of seeking the Lord himself. The scripture tells us clearly in John 10:4-5, “His sheep know his voice, and strange voices, they will not follow.”   SO WHAT ARE THE STRANGE VOICES? The voices from the external world that are constantly pumping us full of data, fear, rhetoric and forced compliance to social conditioning. If we choose to listen to the voice of strangers, then we move further away from being sheep in the pasture of the Lord.   SO HOW DO WE KNOW HIS VOICE? How do we discern that it's him? The number one thing, is that God always speaks life. He always speaks truth. And when God speaks, it brings peace, even in the midst of hard difficulties or hard decisions. An absolute solid peace comes and says, “This is the way, and this is what you have to do!” Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, "This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. That's Isaiah 30:21.   THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU. God absolutely wants to direct your life through your decision-making. The Holy Spirit guides us in our spirits (not through our physical body). The Number One way The Holy Spirit leads and guides us is through what the Bible calls, the “Inward Witness.” Proverbs 3:6 says,  “Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”   WHAT IS AN INNER OR INWARD WITNESS? An inner witness is an impression, or a sense or perception on the inside of you. Romans 8:16 tells us, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit, to affirm, to confirm, that we are God's children.” Jeremiah 7:23-24 says this to us,  “But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you shall walk entirely in the way which I command you, so that it may go well for you.'  Yet, they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked by their own advice and in the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and they went backward and not forward.   AS KINGDOM PEOPLE, WE'RE NOT LED BY OUR SENSES. We're not led by our ears or our eyes. We're led by our spirit. When we talk about hearing God, we're not talking about hearing God with our physical ears. We're talking about hearing Him in our spirit.  Here's a great example:  The Apostle Paul had been arrested and he was headed to his trial. Before he took the journey he sensed something in his spirit. He wasn't the captain of the ship, but he sensed something in his spirit.  In Acts 27:10, Apostle Paul said, "Men, I perceive we're going to face a disaster and heavy losses on this voyage. This disaster will cause damage to the cargo and the ship, and it will affect our lives." It wasn't long before the ship hit a cyclone, but an angel appeared and guaranteed Paul that everyone would make it, and they did! What was it that what Paul said in the beginning? “I perceive".   This is what we're looking at right now. We're talking about being led by the Spirit of God, no matter what circumstance or difficulty we might encounter.   BEING A PERSON WHO IS CALLED TO A PROPHETIC MINISTRY, I AM CLEARLY AWARE OF THE FACT THAT 90% OF WHAT I DO, ALSO COMES FROM TEACHING PEOPLE FROM THE WORD OF GOD REGARDING HOW TO  “HEAR” THE VOICE OF GOD.   My job is not to be a telephone for people to connect to God with, nor simply through prophesying. This is not going to change lives long term if the word of God is not taught and also if people don't act on it and obey it.   I HAVE HAD SOME STRANGE ENCOUNTERS WITH PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT I HAVE SOME KIND OF HOTLINE OR SATELLITE CONNECTION TO GOD TO HELP THEM GET ANSWERS. They need something or want to hear what the Lord has for them by asking me for a prophetic word. My friends this is not how the prophetic word of knowledge or word of wisdom works!  I had a lady when we were Pastoring a local fellowship come up to me after the service and she asked me if I would please, “do whatever I do, do that thing that I do”, and see if God would show me where she had put her wedding ring. She had lost it. I remember feeling very uncomfortable and a cold chill went through my body! My thought process was, “this woman wants me to be like a palm reader, or a magic eight ball! She wants me to use divination to find her wedding ring!“ Very kindly but firmly I told the woman, “You can ask the Lord to show you where it is yourself, or just simply go on looking for it. Pray that the Lord would lead you to it, but to ask me to ask the Holy Spirit to show me where it is, is basically trying to use another voice to speak to God for you when you can speak on your own to him.”   THERE ARE TIMES, WHEN GOD WILL SPEAK A WORD, AND IT IS DONE THROUGH A PROPHETIC UTTERANCE, and it gives us a word of knowledge about something or a word of wisdom about a specific event where we need to have insight, but it will always confirm with the Spirit of God what he has already put down on the inside of us that we can't seem to quite untangle, until the prophetic word comes and brings a clarity to it.   SOMETIMES THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL HAVE SOMEONE BRING A PROPHETIC WORD THAT COMES IN THE FORM OF LOVING CORRECTION, BUT IT IS STILL CORRECTION, AND PEOPLE GET ANGRY AND SHOUT, “HOW DARE YOU JUDGE ME! Who are you to judge me?!”   Of course what this is a reaction to being caught out in bad behavior or hidden sin, and the Lord gently, lovingly, brings a word of warning.   ALL OF US KNOW WHEN WE SLIP AWAY FROM SPENDING TIME IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD. We know when we slack off from reading the scripture and from meditating on it, letting the Holy Spirit speak through the word to us. This is where the areas of bitterness and lack of purity in our walk with the Lord get all tangled up.   FRIENDS.  ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO TEACH YOU HOW TO BE LED BY HIM. (By the way, you might need a refreshing of your commitment to only follow his voice.) You don't need a prophet to hear from God for you, or have a constant prophetic word to make decisions. Simply say these words. “Holy Spirit, teach me how to be led by you.” Then, before you make any major decisions, acknowledge God. Say, “God, this is what the situation is,  >  insert your situation

Luke 24:50-53 and Acts 1:9-11 50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.  53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."  Lesson Notes Special Days Website: daysoftheyear.com Ascension Day: it is the 40th day of Easter. It is a Christian holiday that commemorates the belief of the bodily ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. This year it was on Thursday, May 29. Book: The Ascension of Christ: Recovering a Neglected Doctrine by Patrick Schreiner. Five Reasons Why The Ascension Has Been Neglected: 1 The Bible speaks little of it 2 It seems like a bad plan. 3 The implications are unclear. 4 The event is abnormal. 5 The resurrection subsumes the ascension. Andrew Murray on the Ascension: “Faith has in its foundation four great cornerstones on which the building rests – the Divinity of Christ, the Incarnation, the Atonement on the Cross, and the Ascension to the Throne. The last one, the ascension, is the most wonderful, it is the crown of all the rest, it is the perfect revelation of what God has made Christ for us. And so, in the Christian life, it is the most important, for the ascension is the glorious fruit of all that goes before.”  Discussion Questions 1. Have you ever been part of a church that has emphasized the ascension of Jesus Christ? Have you ever been part of a class or read a book about it? Would you agree that the ascension of Jesus Christ is a neglected doctrine? 2. Five reasons were shared as to why the ascension might be considered a neglected doctrine. Which one of the reasons do you think might have the most to do with its neglect? 3. In your own words, why do you think it is important to properly emphasize the ascension? 4. Discuss Andrew Murray's quote about the ascension. Do you agree that the ascension should be considered as the most important cornerstone of our faith? 5. Read again the above seven verses from Luke 24:50-53 and Acts 1:9-11. What stands out to you from these verses about the ascension of Jesus Christ?

They discuss the claim of the quote: the importance of humility in fostering a sense of community and connection. They then upack the counterclaims of the quote: the role of pride in building self-esteem, and the balance between personal accomplishments and collective success. The discussion ends with some essential questions, ultimately emphasizing the need to let go of pride to embrace a more meaningful existence. Image source: https://www.bakerpublishinggroup.com/authors/andrew-murray/651

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Beloved pastor Andrew Murray (1828-1917) shared how in his native South Africa, various diseases affect the orange trees there. To the unpracticed eye all may seem fine, but an expert arborist can spot the rot that heralds the tree’s slow death. The only way to save the diseased tree is to remove the stem and branches from the root and graft them onto a new one. Then the tree can thrive, producing fruit. Murray connected this illustration to the apostle Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians. From prison in Rome, Paul wrote a letter that wonderfully summarizes the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral heart shines through when he prayed that the believers would be strengthened with power through Christ’s Spirit in their inner being so that He would dwell in their hearts by faith (Ephesians 3:16-17). Paul longed that they’d be “rooted and established in love” and would grasp the full measure of God’s abundant love (vv. 17-18). As believers in Jesus, our roots sink deeply into the rich soil of God’s love, where the nutrients fortify us and help us grow. And as we’re grafted onto Jesus, His Spirit helps us to produce fruit. We may have to weather storms that bend us one way or another, but we can withstand them when we’re rooted in the Source of life and love.

TO THIS MAN WILL I LOOK

TO THIS MAN WILL I LOOK   “To this man will I look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit and trembles at my word.” —Isaiah 66:2     The context of this statement is the building of a house for Him. God confronts the absurdity of thinking He is contained by space. Nothing can contain Him. Yet, there is nothing outside of Him. Hannah Whithall Smith once wrote, “People are always trying to enter God's presence but when I read the Bible I see that you cannot get out of it.” Part of the error of the human perspective is that God is like us. That He is here and not there or He must arrive or that He has left. Though we know that the glory of God can depart and manifest, God when understood rightly, envelops all things. He sees, hears and rules all. Tozer once wrote, “The Christian believes, ‘God is there' while the mystic believes that ‘God is here.” In other words, the truth is not merely that God exists, but that you are before Him in all that you do. Humility and the recognition of the all-present one are inseparable. Recently, the drama amongst Christian ministers is at the highest point I have ever witnessed it.  I have found the best way to communicate with each side is to keep before my eyes that the Lord is here. Present. Listening. Let us absorb and conduct ourselves from this revelation of God from God, “heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Has my hand not made everything?” Yesterday I was on a plane returning from preaching at the Chicago HUB conference. From the plane I saw the Disney fireworks show.  A show that I have seen many times. This perspective of the show was much different.  Those massive, loud and bright bursts that squint the eye and pain the ear covering the entire sky above were as small as an app icon on my iPhone.  From this height I heard nothing and could cover the entire show with my pinky.  Maybe the height or our lives is determined by the greatness of our God.  If we think God comes and goes, is here and leaves, can be contained in our auditorium the world is loud, large and squints the eye. But if we believe He is the omnipresent one and nothing is done in the dark or behind his notice, we can raise to that altitude where the greatest displays of men are smaller than a child's hand.   After the Creator of all things declares His greatness, He then swoops down from the highest heavens to the crawling worm and whispers, “To this man will I look.” Breathtaking utterance - Yaweh has revealed to all men what it is that He searches for. John Trapp translates it, “I have an eye to thee.” Giving a romance tone like that old Flamingos tune, “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Brian Simmons comments, “There is one my eyes are drawn to…” Motyer translates it, “For this one I will look.” We have both an understanding that God notices and searches for this one.    “To this man will I look…” He will turn His countenance towards this man.  His countenance is His blessing, keeping, graciousness and peace (Numbers 6). His countenance is that shining of His face.  He lights upon this man.   What other heaven is there? God's face? The very thing God calls us to seek, “Seek my face.”  That very thing David determined to seek, “Your face Lord will I seek.” His presence and person overshadows the humble.    I want to call attention to the fact that man is thinking house and God is thinking humility.  Man thinks building and God thinks bowing. Man thinks place, God thinks person. Man says, “do?” God says “look.”  Yaweh discloses, “Humility attracts Me!” Andrew Murray defines humility as, “The sense of our entire nothingness.” A true faith that prostrates itself before all that God has revealed Himself to be.  Isaac Ambrose cautions us, “if at anytime the soul begins to feel advanced in regard to the accomplishment of duty and spiritual things let us fall down before God and humble ourselves for the pride in our hearts.” Who are the humble? Motyer says they are “those ready to take the lowest place.” For He who is little in his own eyes will not be troubled to be little in the eyes of others. The high mountains are barren but the low valleys are fruitful. Accordingly the showers of God's grace fall into lowly hearts.    Those who are humble are “contrite of spirit.” Notice that it doesn't say, “contrite” only.  Rather it says, “contrite of spirit.” Meaning, it is not a moment of contrition but a way of contrition.  It is not merely an appeal for mercy but a disposition of mercy. It is recognition of a great need for mercy.  An awareness of frailty. A friend said to me today, “I am as messed up as everyone else, I just want to be honest about it.” Dane Ortlund said, “I went from being an unaware screw up to an aware screw up.”  It is living with a ‘need for mercy' frame of mind. Motyer translates it, “crippled in spirit.” The word, astoundingly is the same word used in 2 Samuel 4:4;9:8 for Mephibosheth. Saul's disabled son. A lameness. A deep sense of the damage of sin and helplessness to please God in ourselves. Earnest Kevan wrote, “Sin so crippled man's moral powers that he cannot perform anything that is truly acceptable to God.” Another Theologian writes that it is to “recognize a radical defect that runs from top to bottom.” The natural man is like water on a hill, left to itself it quickly runs downward. Brian Simmons comments that this imparts a “tenderness” of spirit. The man who knows his personal deformity is granted Christ's beauty.   Martin Lloyd Jones wrote, “The way to become poor in spirit is to look at God.” How do we make our souls dwell in the valley of humility - in view of God look at humanity. All that you are, see your own soul, all you have and do not have. Look upon your body, remember your actions and lack of actions, see your condition, sufferings, home life, incidents with others, seldom virtues. How often you have placed self first, preferred yourself, made yourself the center, forgotten to think of others or even to consider God. Your lack of constant joy, peace, trust, patience, peace, selflessness. You do not know if you will live tomorrow or not.  “If the Lord wills you, you will do this or that.” How little time you have and that it is not yours anyway.    Those who are humble and contrite of spirit tremble at his word. From a crippling faith in God the humble live with a great value of His word. To tremble at His word means we believe it. It is important to us. His spoken words are more valuable than 10,000 gold and silver pieces. The crippled man finds His treasure to be God's word. Brian Simmons comments, “living in awe of all I say.” Motyer defines treasuring God's word as, “longing to obey it. To receive it not as the words of man but the very creative word of God.” For the word of God is not “inspired” but “expired.” The God-breathed word. It is God extending Himself to us. Thomas Watson calls the word of God, “the sundial by which we set our lives.” As Luther told us to remember, “the Scriptures did not grow on earth.”    There is a story of a young boy on a ship whose mother gave him a bible. With it she told him, “Whatever happens in your life, never let this book go.” The ship wrecked, his parents drowned and the boy was found holding only his bible.  The Captain asked him why he chose to save his bible over everything else. He said, “My mother told me, no matter what happens in life, never let this book go.” When they arrived on land, the captain took the orphaned boy to a Christian merchant that he knew. After telling the story to the merchant that captain said, “I thought he might be a Christian.” The merchant gladly received the boy and said, “He who holds on to the word in peril is a Christian indeed.”    Lady Jane Gray was made fun of by her peers for reading the Bible while they all played. Her response was, “All amusements are but a shadow of the pleasures which I enjoy reading this book.”    In summary - amidst all the trials, temptations, and thunder storms of this short life, amidst all the different opinions throughout human existence, amidst all the joys and pleasures of living, there is one kind of person that God looks for and looks at.  Upon this one and this one only does God cast the light of His favor and face. The one whose faith has brought him low, crippled his life and clings to God through His word.

My Story  Talk 9 Between Brentwood and Brasenose (1956-1959) Part 2 In our last talk I mentioned that three significant things happened between my leaving school in 1956 and going up to Brasenose in 1959. I gained experience in teaching. I met Eileen, my future wife. And I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. And it's the baptism in the Spirit that's the subject for today. We'll be talking about the events that led up to it, how I heard about it and how both Eileen and I received it.   In August 1957 at a Baptist Union Summer School in the Lake District I met a man called Michael, who mentioned that the following year he was planning to go touring Europe with some Christian friends who owned a car. He asked if I would be interested in going with them and I said yes. I paid to have driving lessons so that I could share in the driving. It was a wonderful holiday, not just because of the breathtaking scenery, but because it was there in Switzerland that I first heard about the baptism in the Holy Spirit.   In my book Signs from Heaven I have already recorded the miraculous escape I had from a falling boulder while climbing a mountain and how impressed I was with the simple faith of one of my new friends who prayed for me as he saw it coming straight for me. His name was Laurie and he was clearly moving in a dimension of Christianity that I knew little or nothing about. So I asked him what he had got that I hadn't got.   So he started to talk about an experience he had received after his conversion – being baptised with the Holy Spirit he called it – when the Holy Spirit had come and filled him to overflowing. He said he had spoken in tongues and told me I could read about it in the book of Acts. But although I wanted to experience more of God in my life, I wasn't interested in speaking in tongues, and I dismissed the subject from my mind. And I might have ignored it forever had it not been for the remarkable series of events which took place the following summer when both Eileen and I were baptised in the Spirit.   In the summer of 1959 we were both sitting in the youth meeting at Eileen's church singing from a well-known chorus book, when I happened to notice a list of books advertised on the back cover, one of which was entitled, The Full Blessing of Pentecost, by Dr. Andrew Murray. The title arrested my attention. Could this be what Laurie had been talking about the previous year in Switzerland? So I decided that it might be good to get it.   I mentioned this to Eileen and, without my knowing about it, she wrote to the publishers hoping to buy a copy for me, but a few days later, she received a reply saying the book was no longer available. The following Saturday morning, I went round to see Eileen and she told me that she had tried to get the book for me but that unfortunately it was out of print. A bit disappointed, I thanked her for trying anyway and, after spending the morning with her, returned home from Eileen's to my parents' house for lunch.   As the meal was not quite ready, I went into the sitting room to wait. On entering, I happened to notice a book lying on the piano and casually picked it up – The Full Blessing of Pentecost by Dr. Andrew Murray! But how did it get there? No one, except Eileen, knew anything of my interest in the subject. My parents did not know where the book had come from. It is true that my father had always had a large collection of books, but if it was his, he certainly had never read it, and didn't even know that he possessed it. Anyway, why wasn't it in the bookcase and how did it get on the piano?   No one had any idea how that book came to be there on the very day that I had been told it was unobtainable. The answer must surely lie in the realm of the supernatural. This was no coincidence. God was confirming to me that I needed to be baptised in the Spirit, and that afternoon, after I had read the book, I got down on my knees and asked God to fill me with the Holy Spirit. But nothing happened!   That evening, I went round to Eileen's and told her about the book. And after she had read the book she too started to seek for the baptism in the Holy Spirit. As Baptists, we knew next to nothing about it – only what we had read in Andrew Murray's book, and that, as I look back on it now, did not give an entirely complete picture.  As I remember it, it made a strong case for believing that there was an experience of the Holy Spirit beyond what we receive at conversion, but there was no mention of speaking in tongues as the evidence.   As a result we weren't exactly sure what we were asking for, but I had the distinct impression that if I was going to receive the Holy Spirit I needed to prepare myself by becoming more holy. I remember thinking that if I could only live a sinless life for a month, or maybe even a week, or even just today, perhaps God would fill me with the Holy Spirit. I remember driving my father's car taking care not to exceed the speed limit when, as I was going down a hill in a 30 zone, I noticed that the speedometer had gone up to 32 m.p.h. Oh no, I thought, I've missed receiving the baptism for another day!   Of course, I now understand, and frequently teach, that the Holy Spirit is a gift and can't be earned! But back then I was getting frustrated by trying the achieve an experience of the Spirit by my own efforts and inevitably failing. So I thought I would write to Laurie who had told me about the baptism in the Spirit in the first place. What should I do? To which he replied, David, all I can say is that if you are really thirsty, you will drink. But this was even more frustrating. The problem was, I had no idea how to drink! Laurie lived quite a distance from me and I didn't feel like writing back and saying,   Thanks Laurie. That's very helpful, but please, how do I drink?   So Eileen and I decided on a different approach. Perhaps we should find a Pentecostal Church and see if they could help us. It turned out that the nearest one was Bethel Full Gospel Church which was about five miles away in Dagenham, and easily reached on our recently acquired Lambretta scooter. So we drove over to take a look at it and discovered from the noticeboard that there was a prayer meeting every Tuesday evening. I was quite nervous about it as I had never been in a Pentecostal meeting before, but we were pleasantly surprised and were impressed with the number of people praying, even though prayers were interspersed with lots of Amens. We, of course, as good Baptists were only used to saying Amen at the end of a prayer! But what really impacted us was the use of the gift of tongues and interpretation. In the middle of the prayer time there were three ‘messages' in tongues each of which was promptly interpreted. And we knew that God was speaking to US. These people did not know who we were. We had arrived just in time for the meeting and had had no time for conversation before the meeting began. So when we heard the opening words of the first interpretation we were completely amazed:   You have come into this church seeking to be filled with the Spirit!   All three interpretations were equally directly relevant to us, and as a result we spoke with the pastor after the meeting and explained who we were and why we had come. His name was Alfred Webb, and he encouraged us to come the following Tuesday and sit on the front row where anyone ‘seeking the baptism' would be prayed for with the laying on of hands. So that's what we did, but we were rather disappointed when nothing seemed to happen when he laid hands on us. This happened week after week until we finally received after we had come back from our summer holiday in Torquay, Devon.   That holiday was significant for several reasons. It was the first time that Eileen and I had been on holiday together and we had borrowed my father's car so that we could take another young couple with us. My father had bought the car before he had passed the driving test so that I could give him lessons. (You may remember that I had learned to drive before we went on that holiday in Switzerland). Dad had not yet passed the test, so was happy to let me borrow it.   But, as far as the baptism in the Spirit was concerned, two things were particularly relevant. First, on the two Sundays we were in Torquay we decided to attend Upton Vale Baptist Church which was not far from the Christian Endeavour Holiday Home where we were staying. I was very impressed with the minister's sermon on Hebrews 11:6 and his emphasis on the fact that God rewards those who earnestly seek him. So I had a word with him after the service and told him I was seeking the baptism in the Spirit.   Sadly, but not unsurprisingly for a Baptist minister back in 1959, he tried to discourage me from doing so, something which, when I started my course at Oxford a month or so later, influenced my decision to attend a Pentecostal church while I was there rather than a Baptist church. However, that sermon on Hebrews 11:6 on God rewarding those who earnestly seek him did reemphasise a word of prophecy we had received at Bethel a few weeks earlier encouraging us to get up early to pray. Now I am not saying that getting up early to pray is a condition of receiving the baptism, but it could be an indication that we were earnestly seeking, that we were really thirsty (John 7:7-39). So for the rest of that holiday we got up early and prayed.   And when we went to the Tuesday prayer meeting after we got back from our holiday, it happened! This time there was another man sitting alongside the pastor on the platform. I had no idea who he was but as soon as the prayer time began he came down to pray for those who were seeking the baptism.   Eileen and I were kneeling in the front row and he came to me first. I was kneeling with my head in my hands on the seat of the chair I had been sitting on. The man, who I later learned was a pastor called Harold Young, said, Kneel up, brother. So I moved into an upright kneeling position and he then said, Breathe it in, brother. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, and I thought it rather strange. But I was thirsty and unquestioningly did what he said. I took a breath. Then he said, Speak it out brother. Again, I did what he said and I found myself speaking fluently in tongues. And I did not stop until the pastor closed the meeting 45 minutes later! Then someone came up to me and said, You had a mighty baptism, didn't you, brother? To which I replied, Oh, did I? To be honest, it was not at all what I had been expecting. Although I'm not really sure what I was expecting! By this time I had heard or read of so many different testimonies of people receiving the baptism and had realised that in some ways everyone is different, so I was not really sure what I should expect. What I wanted was to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I was not particularly interested in speaking in tongues.   What's more, I found myself questioning whether the words I was speaking really were a language. I had studied four different foreign languages at school and it certainly sounded like none of them. So was my experience real? These questions were going through my mind as we were travelling home on our scooter. But then I remembered something that Jesus had said in Luke 11. Our heavenly Father does not give stones or scorpions or snakes to his children when they ask for the Holy Spirit. And on that basis I chose to believe that what I had experienced was real. I'm so glad that I did. Its reality has been confirmed again and again in my life and ministry. But more of that in later talks.   But what about Eileen? She had had similar doubts when she heard what Harold Young had said to me and when he laid hands on her she did not receive. However, straight after the meeting he spoke to her and said, You do want to receive don't you? and Eileen said yes. So he took us both into the church vestry and placed his right hand on my head and told me to start speaking in tongues again. Then he placed his other hand on Eileen's head and said, Now you begin to speak too.   And she did! And later she told me that it had been in that very vestry that she had received Jesus as her saviour in Bethel Church Sunday school when she was only seven years old. So we were both baptised in the Spirit on the same day, September 8, 1959, just four weeks before I began my course at Brasenose College, Oxford, where I spent a lot of time telling other Christians about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. But we'll be talking about that next time.

“He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companionof fools will be destroyed.” Today we are in between the chapters of Luke 10 and Luke11. I felt very impressed to take the time to tie them together with a personalspiritual discipline that has really helped me to take time to “sit at the feetof Jesus” on a daily basis over the many years of our ministry. In my very first year as a follower of Jesus, I wasprivileged to attend Lynchburg Baptist College, a brand-new Christian BibleCollege in Lynchburg Virginia that was co-founded by Dr. Jerry Falwell and Dr. ElmerTowns. It was there that I was introduced to Christian Devotional Books that wouldgreatly influence my life and ministry and give me a firm foundation to standon over the years. As a young believer I committed to reading five Psalms aday and one Proverbs that would take me through both books each month. InProverbs 13:20, I saw the great truth of “walking with wise men” that wouldkeep me from being destroyed by the devil and his fools. I asked the question, “Howcan I walk with wise men when they don't have the time to spend with a collegestudent or young pastor?” Of course, in those early years at LibertyUniversity, because there was only a handful of students, I was privileged toget to know wise men like Dr. Falwell, Dr. Towns, Dr. Hindson, Dr. Wilmington,Dr. Chapman, Dr. Dobson and many other wonderful professors on a personal andfirst name basis, but that didn't mean they had time to “walk with me” everyday and impart their wisdom into my life. But it was there that I'll never forget Dr. Falwell, inthose very first days of the college in chapel services, introducing us toChristian leaders and writer from the past. The first one I remember himmentioning was Watchman Nee and his book called “The Normal Christian Life”. Hetold how much it had influenced his life. The next one was Andrew Murray andhis book, “With Christ in the School of Prayer”.  Another author and great pastor from the pastthat He often mentioned was Charles Spurgeon. One of my professors actuallystarted each class session by reading the day's devotion from “My Utmost forHis Highest” by Oswald Chambers. It was then that I realized that these great Christian leadersand authors from the past left their wisdom and their lives in their writings. So I began the daily discipline, of not only reading the Psalms and Proverbs, memorizing verses that spoke to my heart, and reading systematically throughthe entire Bible, but also spending time with these “wise men” of pastcenturies. So today, I want to list some of the “wise men” and their dailydevotional books that you can easily find somewhere on sale on the internet. These are books that I really believe have imparted to me a greater love and knowledgeof our great God and Redeemer Jesus Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Watchman Nee –  Book:“The Normal Christian Life”; Devotionals: “The Joyful Heart” and “Table in theWilderness”.Charles Spurgeon – Devotionals: “Morning and Evening” and “Faith'sCheck Book”Andrew Murray – Books: “With Christ in the School of Prayer”and “Absolute Surrender”; “Humility”Devotionals: “Daily Thoughts on Holiness” and “God's BestSecrets”Oswald Chambers – Devotionals: “My Utmost for His Highest”and “Daily Thoughts for Disciples”Henry Blackaby – Devotional: “Experiencing God Day by Day”E. M. Bounds – One Minute Devotional: “The Power of Prayer”Elmer Towns – Devotional: “365 Ways to Know God”A. W. Tozer – Devotional: “Renewed Day by Day”Of course, this is not a complete list, but I trust it willencourage you to spend time with some “wise men” too. If we are not careful with all the television media and socialmedia that we are exposed to everyday, we can end up “becoming a companion offools” and it is no wonder that so many lives are being destroyed. God bless!

Prayers always feel as if they are so small compared to the enormity of the circumstances like this. At first the prayers start out with "loud cries and shouts" unto the Lord for mercy and help. Then day by day, the prayers begin to wane and thin out. Because of the overwhelming catastrope of it, hearts become slowly extinguished. Not for any lack of care and sincere concern, but the feeling is as if the thing is too big and heavy to carry. Silently prayers decline. These fires are only an example of a great thing, but there are other weighty matters too. These fires will eventually be put out but there will be other kinds of fires in the lives of many people. Fires of all kinds of heavy things. At first there is the natural outcry of prayer, but after that it is important to get yourself quiet. Do not feel you need to do so much personal heavy lifting when you yourself need lifting up. You have to spiritually pace yourself. I love what Amy Carmichael says: "So wait before the Lord; Wait in the stillness. And in that stillness, assurance will come to you. You will know that you are heard; you will know that your Lord ponders the voice of your humble desires; you will hear quiet words spoken to you yourself, perhaps to your grateful surprise and refreshment." She is right, and when we wait before the Lord, His comfort will come and you will be led into the path of prayer "paved with love." You will come to realize that you do not have to say a whole lot to Him. When you find yourself saying, "Lord, I cannot do this, it is too heavy for me, but it's not too heavy for you!" God will then meet your faith and answer. He delights in the one who looks up to Him. "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." Isaiah 65:24. “Prayer is the quiet, persistent living of our life of desire and faith in the presence of our God.”― Andrew Murray

In his classic old book, “With Christ in the School of Prayer”, Andrew Murray offers us some sage advice that should spark our own regular self-reflection. It's also advice we can pass on to our kids as we teach them to engage in self-reflection, both now and for the rest of their lives. Murray writes this: “The tone of my life during the day is God's criterion of what I really am and desire.” What Murray was saying is that how I live moment by moment – the choices I make, the things I say, how I spend my time, and how I spend my money – all of those things speak loudly about who and what I worship. Regardless of what I might say, my life offers clear and unmistakable evidence of who I am and what I worship. I don't know about you, but that causes me to pause and really consider whether I am truly endeavoring to follow Jesus Christ. Parents, your kids are watching you, and the tone of your life during the day will become their guideline for who they should be and what they should really desire. All of us must take up our cross and follow Jesus daily.

While in DC they shared some of their favorite quotes—and thoughts—on prayer.    And for all who listen to the podcast regularly, read the Bible daily, and pray with others weekly, you will be greatly inspired by Andrew Murray, AB Simpson, Wesley Duewel and other favorites! Her takeaway? Expectation rather than limitation!   For daily encouragement to read through the Bible in a year, follow Becky daily @BeckyTirabassi on Instagram or Facebook.
