“It's not really the place that you're going, it's the stories that reveal themselves in the place that you're going. You're fascinated by the lives and the experiences that people had before you, because you're finding this connective tissue emotionally to another generation, another decade, another era.” We're in great company with Tereasa Surratt, the Founder and Owner of Camp Wandawega, who was persuaded by her husband, David, twenty years ago to save this pocket of American history tucked away in the woods of Wisconsin, and they have been restoring it ever since as a getaway for the creative community. What was once an infamous lakeside property - living many lives over time as a brothel and speakeasy, a family resort, a Catholic retreat center and summer camp - was left to be condemned until David's childhood nostalgia got the best of him. Today, Camp Wandawega has become a retreat for creatives to gather, a maker of goods that help us explore the great outdoors, and a place to step off the grid and back in time. In this episode, Tereasa shares how a passion for preservation and a humility for the never ending work to be done, turned into a Reveille attracting other likeminded creatives to seek inspiration from and memories made in nature. Top Takeaways [1:40] Tereasa and her husband, David, spent the last few decades living two lives - one as executives in Chicago's advertising industry and the other restoring an abandoned camp in Wisconsin. After “burning the candle at both ends” they went all in on what would become Camp Wandawega.  [5:55] Read or Listen to 100 years of a celebrated American Getaway, which has lived so many lives and worn so many layers - from a modest lakeside resort to a rambunctious brothel and speakeasy, from a family friendly Catholic retreat center to the timeless camp it has become today. [7:35] How Camp Wandawega fell into David and Tereasa's hands…not by design, but by accident and by inheritance.  [15:20] Close your eyes and imagine getting lost amidst the woods, strolling along the hiking paths from numerous cabins to a sprawling lakefront - as Tereasa visualizes a tour of Camp Wandawega - where the focus has been to preserve and restore, rather than trying to recreate and renovate. [20:15] Tereasa and David realized early on that everyone is looking for different experiences, coming with different expectations. Thus, taking pride in their no frills accommodations, they set out to create the Manifesto of Low Expectations, setting the humorous tone for making fun memories.  [30:45] There are so many surprises in store during your Camp Wandawega stay, so be sure to pull out the drawers, open the cabinets, peek in closets, and immerse yourself as you discover an era gone by.  [33:00] Snack and sip in good company - from the Canteen stocked with old fashioned packaged goods reminiscent of your childhood, to the Farm Stand showcasing the bounty of Wisconsin's seasonal produce, to the curated picnic baskets and meals prepared by local chefs and bakers, growers and makers.  Notable Mentions All Together Now The Elegant Farmer Solemn Oath Brewery Chef Joe Flamm of Rose Mary Chef John Manion of El Che & Brasero  Stock Campfire Jamboree  Shoppable Collaborations The Tie Bar accessories  Wally's camping gear Into The Woods bedding Chicago Pop Up Visit For Yourself Camp Wandawega Website | @campwandawega  American Getaway Podcast | Wandawega Historical Society Wandawega Camp Store | CW Books  Tereasa Surratt Website | Tereasa Surratt on Intro Stay In Good Company Website

Edward Surratt was born into an upper income family and had all of the advantages so many others did not. After his entrepreneur father passes away he takes over the successful company and goes bankrupt within two years. He wanders around and finally settles on long haul trucking as a career. He has been indicted on or confessed to up to 20 murders between 1977 and 1978 but it is suspected he is responsible for many more. His trucking career gave him the transportation to go town to town, break into private homes, kill the men immediately and terrorize, torture and eventually murder the women. Some he left in their homes. Some he took to secluded areas and buried them. Two women he has confessed to murdering he assures detectives they are "unrecoverable.' Thank God this monster has spent and will spend the rest of his miserable life in prison. This is the LAST of the series on truck driving serial killers. The couple shares their hearts for staff members to be healthy, even providing a strategic plan for restoration of health. In a pre-MP3 and CD era, vinyl full-albums abounded in Christian bookstores and at local record stores. It's 1986, and today's guest, Michael Sweet, and his band Stryper ("by His stripes, you are healed.." Isaiah 53:5) just released their album To Hell With the Devil. It's about to sell millions in both Christian and secular markets, with its songs all over the radio, and music videos on MTV. Host, Joey Svendsen was in the 4th grade, but found that Stryper album at Family Christian Bookstore and it turned his life upside-down, resulting in music exploration being a full-blown hobby.Stryper was no different than the other "metal band greats," like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Poison. From impeccable songwriting to catchy melodies and shredding guitars, Stryper was on top of their game. The things that separated them from the rest was their motivation to spread the gospel of Jesus and their song lyrics that matched that passion.Joey talks to Michael Sweet about the early days of Stryper, the hair and make-up culture of the 80s metal scene, and why Michael had to walk away to get healthy and prioritize God and family. Throughout the episode, Joey highlights some of his favorite Stryper songs as listeners are treated to audio clips of them all.At top of the episode, Abbie Love, Joey, Tomelex and Jack Hoey III talk pointless homework assignments and spiritual warfare in context of the Surratt's wreck discussed in episode 112. This week we wanted to share another great podcast from the BBC that you might enjoy – Lady Killers with Lucy Worsley. Lucy travels back in time to revisit the unthinkable crimes of 19th century murderesses from the UK, Australia and North America.    In this episode Lucy is joined by Evy Poumpouras, former special agent with the Secret Service, where she protected five US presidents as part of the Presidential Protective Division.   Lucy and Evy investigate the case of Mary Surratt, a 42 year-old widow, mother and pious Catholic who was arrested in April 1865 for conspiring to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. He had been shot by former actor John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC. One of the most sensational trials in US history followed, with prosecutors pushing for death sentences for everyone involved in the murder.    Lucy and Evy want to find out why the authorities were so sure that Surratt was involved in the assassination. They want to know what her story tells us about the lives of women at the close of the American Civil War. And they ask what happens when women step outside the domestic sphere and dare to get involved in protest and politics?    To find out more about the background to the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination, Lucy asks Dr Nikki M Taylor, Professor of History at Howard University Washington DC, to go to Ford's Theatre and to the Surratt House Museum, formerly Mary's Surratt's tavern in Maryland. Mary Surratt, she discovers, was a slave-holder and, like John Wilkes Booth, was horrified by Lincoln's intention to end slavery and enfranchise African Americans.    Mary Surratt is an elusive and divisive woman. Lucy wants to know if she was a devoted mother attempting to make her way in the world – or a hard-hearted conspirator, a slave-holder and fanatical Confederate trying to reignite the civil war. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. The three also treat the listenership to some fun stories with  hilarious insight on the Surratt family, back in the old days when our Lead Pastor, Josh Surratt, still got spankings. As the first woman executed by the U.S. government, Mary Surratt's story is one of intrigue, loyalty, and a controversial trial that continues to spark debate more than a century later. We start by exploring Mary's early life, her marriage to John Surratt, Sr., and how the Surratt family became deeply involved in the Confederate cause during the Civil War. In this episode I sit down with my Pastor and Friend, Lisa Surratt. We go all in and talk about safe people, safe spaces, and healing in the church. We also dive into marriage, ministry and motherhood. Lisa pours out so much wisdom, life and fire in this episode.   She graduated from MUSC with her masters in Physician Assistant Studies in 2006 and practiced emergency medicine for six years until she became the East Coast Director for the A21 Campaign. She is now focused on serving full-time at Seacoast as Co Lead Pastor alongside her husband Josh.    Learn more, plus get free resources at https://andiandrew.com/
