Rain Phoenix hosts an illuminating conversation with Jody Stephens, drummer of the legendary band Big Star. The discussion delves into Jody's early musical influences in Memphis, his experiences with Big Star, and the band's enduring legacy. Jody shares insights about recording at Ardent Studios and working with John Fry, offering a glimpse into the creation of Big Star's iconic sound. Jody then launches Luther Russell. They discuss their collaboration in their band Those Pretty Wrongs, exploring their songwriting process and creative dynamic. Luther provides additional perspective on their partnership and his own musical journey. The episode also touches on Jody's recent induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame and Luther's latest solo album. Throughout, the conversation highlights the importance of maintaining a joyful, pressure-free approach to creativity in music. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Introducing Jody Stevens of Big Star (05:21) Jody’s early musical influences in Memphis (09:06) Rain on discovering Big Star in Costa Rica (15:22) John Fry's influence on Big Star's iconic sound (24:17) Working at Ardent Studios after Big Star (31:49) Changes in the music industry over time (47:50) Luther Russell is launched (49:17) Collaborative songwriting process for the band (56:32) Recording at Abbey Road with John Leckie (59:52) Luther Russell's new solo album Happiness for Beginners (1:02:39) Upcoming shows and future recording plans KEY TAKEAWAYS: Music creation should be a joyful, pressure-free process. By focusing on having fun and avoiding self-imposed stress, artists can collaborate effectively long-distance and produce multiple albums together. This approach has allowed creativity to flow naturally. The music industry has changed dramatically, but there are still "gatekeepers" in new forms. While technology has democratized distribution, the sheer volume of content makes it challenging to break through. Having a passionate fanbase who will share your music remains crucial. Revisiting and performing older material can lead to unexpected new creative partnerships. What started as playing some shows together to support a documentary evolved into a fruitful songwriting collaboration and multiple albums. Being open to these opportunities can take your career in exciting new directions. The band released three albums—#1 Record (1972), Radio City (1974), and Third/Sister Lovers (recorded in 1974, released in 1978)—which, despite initial commercial struggles, later garnered critical acclaim and influenced numerous artists . In 1993, he participated in a reformation of the band alongside Chilton and members of The Posies, resulting in the 2005 album In Space. It's the Valley Voices Story Slam podcast: We had the winners of season 10's Story Slams on stage at the Academy of Music in Northampton in April. And now we present to you - the Best of Season 10! There were great stories all year long, but Chris Bell, Ann Marie Zanfagna and Susan Cocalis were the audience's favorite that night. Enjoy!
In This Episode, Chris Bell of Super Page 58 dot com needs our help. The main feature today is a real treat and is a recording of a panel from teletext 50 form September 2024 at the centre for computing history in Cambridge. The two Gentlemen you are going to hear from were guests and kindly agreed to provide us with an impromptu panel on the Sunday morning. The panel was somewhat of an exclusive and luckily for all of us Jason Robertson was on hand to record the majority of the panel for prosperity by leaving his phone on voice record and placing it next to a speaker! The first 30 seconds or so is David Rayer's speaking to Jason just before the panel started in in foyer of the centre, I included it because it provided some context to Davis role. David was the Principal R and D engineer at BBC research, Kingsford Warren- his remit included Ceefax, telesoftware and data broadcasting. The next gentleman we are introduced to is Charles Hope, who worked for BBC R and D at Television centre, Lyme Grove and Henry Wood House, working in the field of Standard Conversion in Ceefax as well as marketing the technology to other broadcasters, more of this you will hear. Charles also worked on many newsworthy events, the 1966 World Cup, the Olympics in Mexico, the Winter Olympics in Grenoble and also the Assignation of John F Kennedy. The accounts from David and Charles provides a great compliment to the recollections of John Adams, who I recently interviewed, it is available already just look for John Adams in my podcast feeds. If you want to see other panels that were hosted that weekend, you should visit Jamie Nemeth's YouTube page where he has provided recordings. I would urge anyone who has not as yet to visit there as there are many contributors who have never shared the experiences of Teletext and Ceefax before in that context and probably will not have the opportunity again for some time. So thanks again for Jason's quick thinking, we join the panel and apologies in advance for the varying sound quality but on this the episode!..

What makes a team truly creative? It's not beanbag chairs or forced brainstorming sessions—it's about creating an environment where play becomes the engine of productivity.Drawing from the wisdom shared by ex-Pixar executives Jamie Woolf and Dr. Chris Bell, this solocast explores how psychological safety, ownership, and freedom transform workplaces from control centers to creativity hubs. The distinction is powerful: work doesn't need to feel like work when people are in flow.Remember the piano stairs experiment in Stockholm? When regular stairs were transformed into musical piano keys, people abandoned the escalator en masse—not because they suddenly learned stairs were healthier, but because taking them became fun. This same principle applies to our teams. When we create conditions where exploration feels natural and failure feels safe, innovation flourishes without force.True inclusion means moving beyond token representation to genuine agency—people don't want to merely attend the party; they want to help plan it. Creativity emerges not from chaos but from stillness, those moments when our minds settle and make space for insight. And perhaps most importantly, creativity isn't restricted to your design team—it's the procurement specialist finding a novel cost-saving approach, the team leader redesigning workflows to reduce stress, the frontline worker identifying a customer pain point no one else noticed. What would your organization look like if every team member felt empowered to play, experiment, and truly belong? The answer might transform not just your culture, but your results. Ready to create those conditions in your team? Listen now and discover how to unlock the creative potential hiding in plain sight.Send us a textSupport the show✅ Follow The Leadership Project on your favourite podcast platform and listen to a new episode every week!
NASCAR races took place at Circuit of The Americas and Phoenix, with Chris Bell winning three in a row. The adjustments made to the circuit, softer tires, and track limits were discussed. Connor Zilisch overcame a pit road penalty and contact to win his second race at CoTA. Almirola's victory over Bowman was influenced by a late race caution. IndyCar's Grand Prix of St. Petersburg saw Palou win the season opener, with Dixon and Newgarden behind. Various strategies emerged after a Lap 1 crash. The GSP Roundup included updates on Supercross, WEC, NHRA, MotoGP, Supercars, and FIA F2 & F3. Previews for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and NASCAR Tripleheader at Las Vegas were also given. Josh's Sim Segment closed the show.
Ready to transform your workplace from a creativity desert into a thriving innovation ecosystem? Jamie Woolf, the first director of culture at Pixar Animation, and Dr. Christopher Bell of Creativity Partners reveal the unexpected connection between play, power dynamics, and breakthrough ideas.Their conversation shatters common misconceptions about creativity in the workplace. Forget the notion that creativity belongs only in "creative" industries – it's about solving problems that don't yet exist, making it essential for finance teams, healthcare workers, and every organization seeking innovation. The experts share why traditional approaches to workplace culture often miss the mark, especially when it comes to power dynamics between leaders and teams. The discussion takes a fascinating turn when examining how leadership impacts creativity. "75% of people say their boss – not workload or deadlines – is the most stressful part of their day," Dr. Chris reveals, highlighting how unintentional behaviors from well-meaning leaders can stifle innovation. You'll discover practical strategies for flattening power distances without diminishing leadership authority, creating environments where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best ideas.Perhaps most compelling is their exploration of inclusive storytelling as a foundation for creative cultures. They explain the difference between making people "feel" included versus ensuring people "are" included – a distinction that transforms how teams collaborate and innovate. The conversation concludes with a powerful framework for media literacy that applies equally to workplace communications and broader social narratives.Whether you're leading a team that needs a creativity boost, working under challenging leadership, or simply fascinated by what makes innovative cultures tick, this episode offers actionable insights to transform how you approach workplace dynamics. Ever notice how the leadership qualities you aspire to can vanish under pressure? That calm, thoughtful presence replaced by reactivity and micromanagement when deadlines loom? You're not alone.Drawing on wisdom from executive coach and former Microsoft leader Sabina Nawaz, this episode unpacks a profound truth: pressure doesn't create your leadership tendencies—it reveals them. When stakes rise, we default to ingrained habits rather than our aspirational values. As Sabina brilliantly puts it, "Power doesn't corrupt, pressure does."The conversation explores four game-changing leadership concepts you can implement immediately. First is the Delegation Dial—a visual metaphor for adjusting your leadership approach based on the person and situation rather than defaulting to one style. Next, we confront the uncomfortable reality that power naturally isolates you from truth as people filter feedback and hesitate to challenge your thinking. This isolation explains why organizations suffer most when passionate people go quiet.Perhaps most transformative is the deceptively simple Multiple Meanings Exercise. Before reacting to someone's behavior, pause and consider at least three possible interpretations. This creates space between stimulus and response—space where actual leadership happens. It transforms frustration into curiosity and judgment into empathy. What leadership habits are you practicing daily that will emerge when everything's on fire? Who's telling you the truth when it matters most? How might your assumptions be limiting your effectiveness? This episode will challenge you to answer these questions honestly and provide practical ways to become the leader you aspire to be, especially when it's hardest.Subscribe to The Leadership Project and join us next time as we explore creating cultures of creativity and inclusive storytelling with Jamie Wolfe and Dr. Chris Bell. Episode 151 of the Check Your Six podcast had Chris Bell stop by the GRP Studios to talk about toxic living!! A drummer and graduate from Florida A&M talked about the path that he is on to create living spaces that are free of toxic air pollutants, so we can all breathe a little easier. We talked about the influences that have shaped his life including his parents and in-laws that have continued to support him to follow his passions. Talking about food toxins led us to the fact that we both agreed that we are fans of dark chocolate and peanut butter, even if dark chocolate is supposed to be bad for you, we're not sure if those studies are accurate. Also went down the rabbit hole of the toxicity of microwaves and what they are doing to our food. He did covered a lot of the benefits of the line of Pure Living products that include not using laundry soap and washing everything in cold water...still trying to figure that one out. Great time with Chris today, loved the shout out he gave to his wife Faith, his kids and his in-laws. Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 90-74 loss to Florida State on Saturday night in Tallahassee. The good news for Syracuse was JJ Starling returned to the lineup after missing 7 games with a hand injury and Chris Bell snapped out of a long slump with 18 points (including 4 3's), but SU's poor defense was costly in the loss to the Seminoles. Brent also discusses how Eric Devendorf missed the mark with his strong defense of Adrian Autry on the ACC Network. Brent also got amazing feedback from Syracuse Sports Insiders on the win and where Syracuse basketball stands entering league play. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 81-71 loss to Wake Forest at the JMA Dome on New Year's Eve. SU fell to 6-7 (0-2) with top recruit Kiyan Anthony watching courtside. The more SU slides down the hill in the 2024-25, the more fans will start looking ahead to what Anthony's Orange will look like next year. In the meantime, Brent talked about hiw Adrian Autry has to switch up his starting line-up with Chris Bell's sustained struggles. Lucas Taylor and Kyle Cuffe Jr. gave SU a lift off the bench against Wake Forest. Can they be a consistent 1-2 punch for SU into ACC play? Axe also discussed the main New Year's resolution SU has to make about starting off games better and where some of the inconsistencies on defense and #FreeThrowsMatter need to improve. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-63 win over Bucknell as SU gets ready to begin its full-time ACC slate. Brent discussed how SU continued to struggle from the 3-point line, shooting 1-of-11 distance in the 2nd half. Encouraging signs from the win included Eddie Lampkin (18 pts, 11 rebs) and Donnie Freeman (15 pts, 11 rebs) both scoring double-doubles and SU's switch to using more zone press seemed to light a fuse on the defensive end. Brent also wonders how Chris Bell can kick things into gear and which of the transfers will have the most success in ACC play. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-71 loss to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the JMA Dome. The listed attendance for Saturday's game was 17,18. While the fans that did go to the game were loud and created a great atmosphere for the 100th meeting of SU-Georgetown, that's a concerning number for SU's main rival in a series that routinely used to get 30,000+ into the Dome. Georgetown ironically used a zone defense, the signature weapon of Jim Boeheim's tenure it had to face for so many years, to flummox the Orange on Saturday afternoon. Eddie Lampkin (18 points) and Jyare Davis (15 points) both had good offensive games inside, but the Orange defense struggled in the paint, get out-scored in that area 48-34. Brent also discusses the continued struggles of Chris Bell in big games, who had just 3 points for Syracuse, and growing fan concerns about Adrian Autry's coaching methods. Brent also reacted to thoughts and opinions from Syracuse Sports Insiders on the loss to Georgetown. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 70-66 loss to Texas in Brooklyn. As Brent says often, #FreeThrowsMatter and SU's 9-of-18 performance at the charity stripe cost the Orange in a close loss to the Longhorns. That noted, SU looked as good in the 2nd half of this game as it has in any half this season and maybe gave SU fans hope it can run with some better teams on the schedule. Axe also discussed some lineup changes Adrian Autry made in the 2nd half, how key Eddie Lampkin's energy has been to the Orange and what's holding back Chris Bell from contributing the way SU needs him to. Brent also reacted to opinions and questions from Syracuse Sports Insiders. Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today!
